Chapter 31: Dishonor Is Unforgivable
A/N: I’m going to make Kaede young in this story because Kikyo never died and Inuyasha didn’t sleep pinned to the Goshinboku tree for fifty years. Kikyo and Kouga go visit Kaede to tell her about their marriage and the baby. Will Kaede pt Kpt Kikyo’s choice?
Kouga held Kikyo’s hand tenderly as they walked towards the small village where her sister Kaede lived. Kikyo was grinning from ear to ear when they reached the small village. She led Kouga quickly to her sister’s small and simple hut. Kikyo knocked on the door and in a few moments was greeted by her gorgeous younger sister Kaede. “Sister Kikyo? Is that ye?”
“Yes Kaede, it’s me!” Kaede leapt forward and embraced her older sister tightly. Her dark brown eyes grew wide when she took notice of Kouga standing behind Kikyo. Kaede pulled away from Kikyo and nodded towards Kouga.
“And who is your friend Kikyo?” Kikyo gave her little sister a broad smile and grabbed Kouga’s hand.
“This little sister, is my husband!”
“Ye have married Kikyo? What is his name?”
“Yes I have married and his name is Kouga. May we come inside?” Kaede nodded and stepped aside to allow them to walk inside her hut. Her brown eyes narrowed as she took notice of Kouga’s tail.
“So sister Kikyo, what village is Kouga from?”
“Oh Kouga’s not from any village really, he’s from the Eastern lands.”
“I see. Is he of noble blood then?”
“Well yes, Kouga is prince of all the wolf youkai people.” Kaede frowned as she saw her sister’s smile broaden. Kouga’s sapphire blue eyes darted from his beautiful mate to her lovely younger sister. It was clear to him that the young woman did not like him because he was a demon. “Kaede, aren’t you going to congratulate us on our marriage?” Kaede bowed her head unable to look Kikyo in the eye.
“No Kikyo, I won’t be happy for ye.”
“Why?”
“Because ye have married a demon!”
“But Kaede, that doesn’t matter! I love Kouga!”
“Ye must leave this demon at once Kikyo! Ye are a miko or have ye forgotten?”
“I am no longer a miko sister, I gave up that life.”
“To be with this wretched demon?”
“No. Because I was miserable! The life of a miko is one of solitude and endless loneliness Kaede.”
“So ye decided to marry a demon?”
“Yes, Kouga is the man I love. It matters not that he is a demon.”
“Perhaps it makes no difference to ye that your husband is a demon Kikyo, but it will matter to others.” Kikyo frowned at her younger sister and then let out a long sigh before replying.
“Others? What others Kaede?”
“Why the villagers Kikyo.”
“I do not care what the villagers think of me because I’m not going to live in the village.”
“Where will ye live?”
“In the Eastern lands in Kouga’s palace. My place is with my husband little sister.”
“There is still time for ye to come back to your life as a miko! No one knows that ye have married a demon Kikyo, please come back home I beg of ye!” Kikyo shook her head and sat down on one of the woven mats on the floor. Kouga joined her and took her hand in his quickly. Kaede frowned at the small show of affection that had transpired between her older sister and the demon. She sat down across from the young and obviously in love couple. “Kikyo, do ye know what ye have done?”
“What I’ve done? Yes I married the man I love and found happiness.”
“Is that what this demon has made you believe Kikyo? Demons are vile creatures that can never be trusted! Ye used to know that, what made ye forget?” Kikyo cast an apologetic glance toward Kouga who sat silently beside her.
“Kaede, demons are not all bad. Kouga is very kind and good hearted. I came here to share some happy news with you little sister, not to defend my husband’s reputation.”
“What news do ye speak of Kikyo?” Kikyo gave a small smile to her younger sister and squeezed Kouga’s hand softly.
“Well I’m pregnant. Kouga and I are expecting our first child Kaede!” Kaede lowered her brown eyes to the floor of the hut. She could not look her older sister in the eye. “Kaede? Are you going to say anything?”
“I am, but ye may not want to hear it. Kikyo, ye are so smart, gifted, and beautiful. Why have ye thrown your life away to bare a child by this demon?”
“Because I love him Kaede.”
“Ye are a fool Kikyo! Humans and demons cannot fall in love, it just is not acceptable!”
“I don’t care what is acceptable! I love Kouga and I love this child that we created!”
“Kikyo, ye have greatly dishonored our family by laying with a demon and conceiving that half breed child that grows inside ye.”
“So what are you saying Kaede?”
“I’m saying that what ye have done is unforgivable and that ye shall be looked down upon.” Kikyo’s brown eyes stung with her unshed tears as she remembered all of the hateful things that she had said to Kagome. Now her own sister was shutting her out the same way that she had cast Kagome out. “Kikyo, ye have chosen your place and that is with your demon husband. Ye have chosen to act as a whore and give yourself to that worthless demon! That cannot be forgotten and ye shall have to live with that mistake for all eternity.” Kikyo stood angrily and Kouga immediately stood beside her as well.
“So little sister, you think me to be nothing but a demon’s whore?”
“Aye Kikyo, that’s what ye have become.”
“I see. Well I shall leave your home since you think so little of me now. Forgive me for disgracing you with my presence.” Kaede remained silent as she watched Kouga lead her older sister out of her hut. Before leaving Kouga turned and cast a hateful glare at Kaede. His cold sapphire blue eyes made Kaede look up at him instantly. Kikyo watched with a nervous expression etched onto her pretty face.
“You’re wrong about Kikyo, she has dishonored no one. Kikyo is my mate and the mother of my unborn pup, she means everything to me. It matters not what you or anyone else thinks about our joining!” With his peace spoken Kouga lead his visibly distraught wife back home to their mountain palace in the Eastern lands. Kikyo allowed Kouga to carry her back home and she wept against his broad muscular chest. He gently rubbed small soothing circles onto Kikyo’s back in an attempt to calm her. “Shh love, don’t cry. It matters not what Kaede thinks of our joining, all that matters is that we are in love.” Kikyo nodded and nuzzled her tear streaked face into Kouga’s chest and listened to his steady heartbeat.
