Kagome took strength in the warmth of InuYasha’s youki as he stood at her right and in Miroku’s reiki on her left as she stood under the Goshinboku. Gathered before her separated by an invisible wall were the youkai clan lords including Sesshomaru who stood in front, apart from the others on one side and on the other, the most powerful among her people. She and InuYasha had decided that it would be best to call them here all together since they were just going to have to accept they were on the same side now.
She took a deep breath. “Thank you everyone for coming here today We have gathered of course so that I might present to you my children. I’m sorry to have inconvenienced all of you by making you come here but there is a very real threat out there, one that would stop at nothing to get his hands on them and one that we must unite to defeat not only for our own good, but for that of the people we are duty bound to protect.”
She leaned over and lifted her son from the bassinet in front of her and stepped to the side. She hear everyone take in a collective gasp as InuYasha took her place and lifted out their daughter. He stepped up beside her.
“We present to you all our son Kazuki, a true hanyou, untouched by the reiki of his mother and heir of the White Dog Clan,” she said.
“And our daughter Emiko, a pure miko, untouched by the youki of her father, but no less of my blood,” InuYasha finished. “I claim them both as their sire and the Great Miko Higurashi Kagome as my mate, bound by the covenant we are as one never to be parted.”
Voices, mostly from her people began to rise in protest, but she cut them off. “Make no mistake, I am not asking for permission or for approval. I am his and he is mine and you try to come between us at your own peril. Anyone who would even think to harm my mate or either of my children will be faced with the true power of the Great Miko in a way you have never before witnessed and should damn well hope that you never do.
“That fact is that the real enemy is and always has been Naraku. I’m not asking you to be friends with the youkai or them to be friends with you, but I will have peace between our peoples if it is the last thing I do if only because we are better than this, all of us, than to be led blindly by out hate and prejudice even after learning that it has been misplaced. I would welcome any of you who are willing to leave the past where it belongs to aid me in putting an end to this monster who has plagued us all for centuries.”
“Keh, you know I’m with you, woman,” InuYasha said. “Our pups, one hanyou and one miko won’t ever know they are supposed to be on opposite sides even if I have to face down hell itself to make it happen.”
Sesshomaru moved to stand beside InuYasha. “This Sesshomaru stands with his blood. So long as I am Youkai no Taishou the truce will remain in effect. No longer shall the many be held accountable for the actions of the few.”
“I trust our Great Miko,” Miroku offered. “Returned to us alive and unharmed, and twice blessed, the mother of the next generation of the two most powerful bloodlines, both spiritual and youkai. Who are we to question the will of the fates.” He turned to Kagome and bowed. “As always you have my full support, Kagome-sama.”
“I know this must come as quite a shock to you all and that many of you will never understand, and that’s okay,” Kagome said. “You don’t have to, but you do have to accept that things have changed. If anyone wants to come speak to me or verify the truth about our daughter and son then feel free to come forward.”
“You see, she is trying to lure us into a trap,” Kikyou spat. “To think we would be so foolish to approach that half breed when he holds his spawn.”
InuYasha’s expression remained neutral as Kagome’s reiki flared to life around her, blazing with her fierce and unwavering love for him and their children. She passed their son to him and then approached the other woman who suddenly found herself standing out on a limb all by herself as the others who had been standing near her backed away.
“Look into my eyes Kikyou and listen well. I cannot harm you here, just as he cannot, as none of you can, but do not think for a moment that I will not remember your words today,” Kagome said with deadly calm. “That half breed as you called him is the best man I have ever known. His faith in me, his devotion, his determination to find me never wavered and it is in large part because of him that I stand here now. If I am ever forced to choose, my choice will be him and our children, every time, without fail, without reservation or hesitation and without regret. Oh and if you ever refer to either one of my beautiful pups again with such disrespect the next time we have words won’t be so pleasant for you.”
“More than worthy of being a Lady of our house, little brother,” Sesshomaru said. “Well chosen.”
Kagome returned to InuYasha and took Kazuki back into her arms. “Thank you Sesshomaru-sama, you honor me with your words.”
He dipped his head in acknowledgement and then stepped back to give room to anyone who might wish to speak to her to approach. As foolish as it might have seemed for his brother to get involved with not just a miko but with the great miko herself, clearly there was more at work here than he was meant to understand, and as long as she continued to strive for a true and lasting peace between their peoples then he would support her.
Kagome was a little surprised that Aiko was the first of her people to approach. The young woman had always been shy and in many ways unprepared to be in such a high position because of her special gifts. She offered a respectful bow and a soft smile.
“InuYasha-sama, you have nothing to fear from me. I can see the bond between you, the red thread and the bright fierce love, can feel the great power of both your daughter and your son and though I may not understand how or why, I believe in Kagome-sama and her great love for all of us,” Aiko told him.
“If that’s your way of asking if you can hold the pups then go ahead,” he told her.
She blushed but reached out letting him place Emiko in her arms. “Kagome-sama, she is just as gifted as you are and she and her brother share a special bond. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen or felt before but it’s beautiful.”
InuYasha took Emiko back and Kagome passed Kazuki to the young woman who even the youkai in him seemed to think was alright. He watched as she ran a finger along the back of his ear with the lightest of touches causing it to twitch and a smile spread across her face. Kazuki blinked up at her and growled that this was not his mother and that there was no food.
“Have I done something?” Aiko asked.
“No,” Kagome replied. “He’s getting hungry and can smell that you aren’t me and don’t have anything to feed him.”
Her eyes widened. “Oh, you can tell that from the sounds he made?”
Kagome nodded as Aiko returned Kazuki to her. “InuYasha had to tell me at first but I’m getting pretty good at recognizing what his different noises mean.”
“I had no idea,” Aiko said. “Well, I am sure there are others who would like to speak with you, but I support you fully Kagome-sama. I do not know how much use I will be, but I will do my best as you see fit.”
“Thank you, Aiko-sama,” Kagome told her sincerely. The young woman left them and she was delighted to see a familiar face approach them next. “Mamoru-sama, it is good to see you again.”
“Sesshomaru-sama, InuYasha-sama, Kagome-sama,” Mamoru of the bears said with a bow. “And to think I questioned your acceptance of hanyou. I was more wrong than I ever imagined, wasn’t I?”
“Keh, considering we were already unofficially together when you pissed her off at the dinner, I’d say so,” InuYasha offered with a snort.
“And yet it goes even beyond that, I think,” Mamoru said. “To think she could carry a child with youki and further to form the covenant, accepting youki as a part of her in spite of her reiki, I do not see how there can be any doubt that we do not have to be at odds with those of spiritual power. I hope there is no need for me to say that this new development has only assured me further that my decision back the truce was the correct one”
“Your continued support is deeply appreciated,” Sesshomaru told him.
After that a steady stream of people came over, to pay their respects and offer their support. It made her a little sad that more of them were youkai than her own people but there was nothing she could do about that but stay the course and try to win them over. That wasn’t to say that no one on her side offered support, but it was fewer than she had hoped. She glanced to Miroku who seemed to be standing casually nearby but she could see the calculation in his eyes and knew he was likely making note of who he thought they could trust and who was still in opposition to them. As she looked to Sesshomaru she realized that it was likely that he was doing something similar. Slowly the crowd thinned and soon it was only herself, InuYasha, Miroku and Sesshomaru left on the shrine grounds.
“I think it would be advisable for us to sit down and discuss a few things before I leave,” Sesshomaru said.
“Of course,” Kagome agreed. “Let’s go inside.”
By the time they reached the house Kazuki was demanding food with every breath and Emiko needed a diaper change. InuYasha knew the quickest solution would be for him to run upstairs and change Emiko while Kagome fed Kazuki at the table, but he just couldn’t bring himself to leave her alone with two other males while she was going to be nursing and vulnerable.
Sensing his dilemma Kagome turned to his brother and the monk once they were inside. “Just make yourselves at home. We’ll be right back.”
InuYasha followed her upstairs and into the bedroom. She didn’t say anything as she set about changing their son and then retrieved the baby sling. She opened her robes and then put it on over head. Kazuki made happy sounds as she settled him into it and helped him get latched on.
“Am I covered enough now for you to be okay?” she asked.
“I know it’s stupid for like a hundred reasons,” he said as he finished getting their daughter back into her clothes. “I’m sorry.”
She shook her head. “Don’t be sorry. Now, let’s go back down and see what your brother has to say.”
The rejoined Miroku and Sesshomaru in the kitchen and Kagome noted that one of them had put on the kettle. Her money was on Miroku since she just couldn’t imagine Sesshomaru doing something so mundane. InuYasha pulled out a chair for her and then sat down beside her.
“Since I am certain we all have other matters to attend to, I will begin,” Sesshomaru said. “Two of those who approached you work for us, and of the youkai there was one that I am certain cannot be trusted.”
“Kimura Fumiko and Fujita Nobu?” Miroku asked.
“Indeed,” Sesshomaru said.
“I suspected,” Miroku offered. “Though I wouldn’t classify them as a threat considering they were youkai sympathizers, unless there is more to their choosing to spy for your side than simply wanting to preserve youkai life.”
“I do not believe so,” Sesshomaru said. “Their part involved mostly revealing tactical information which would allow us to avoid contact. Unlike Tsubaki they were not interested in feeding us information either true or false about anything else.”
“Well, that’s good to know,” Kagome said. “I would think that since everything I’ve done has been to try and stop the fighting and killing that their support should be genuine. Now, what about the youkai you spoke of.”
“Hn, I have it on good authority that Tatsuya of the dragons is not interested in peace and is in fact attempting to contact this Naraku to offer to join him,” Sesshomaru said. “However there are also mutterings of an uprising among the dragons as his leanings are unpopular among his dwindling clan which can ill afford more losses.”
“Idiot,” InuYasha said with a snort. “You’d think he wanted his bloodlines to go extinct. Like an internal war is any better. it ain’t like we’re demanding that they fight. No wonder he’s unpopular when all they would have to do is sit on the sidelines and wait to see how all this plays out.”
Kagome slipped a drowsy and satisfied Kazuki out of the sling. “Sesshomaru-sama, perhaps you could do me the favor of holding your nephew for a moment.”
InuYasha nearly laughed as she all but forced their son into his brother’s arms when it was more than clear that he definitely hadn’t wanted to agree. She reached into the sling and covered herself before lifting it off over her head and then laying it over her other shoulder. He passed her their daughter without her having to ask but made no move to take Kazuki from Sesshomaru. It was far too amusing to see his brother so uncomfortable and out of his depth. Kagome winked at him as she got Emiko settled in the sling and this time he did laugh out loud. Gods, how he loved that woman.
“InuYasha, do you not…” Sesshomaru tried.
“Keh, he looks happy where he is,” InuYasha cut in.
The monk coughed to cover his own laugh and then cleared his throat as Sesshomaru turned his glare in that direction. “Did you have any other concerns? I will put together a list of those I feel can be trusted and relied upon, those who are likely to remain neutral and those who we need to keep an eye on.”
“I will arrange a similar list. Most youkai will go the way of their clan leader,” Sesshomaru said. “There will however be exceptions as in the case with the dragons, whose situation I will keep you apprised of. Being able to form the covenant has all but cemented her position among my people. What is between them cannot be a lie.”
“If only our people were so easily convinced,” Miroku said. “We should also try and find a way to coordinate our search for both Naraku and Tsubaki so that we are not stepping over each other and thus wasting time and resources.”
“If you don’t mind, Miroku, I’d like to have you put in charge of that aspect on our side,” Kagome said. “I know I can trust you and you can also bring in Sango and the taijiya. They have a stake in this too since Naraku doesn’t seem to care who he kills. You can choose who you want to assist you and I’ll approve the orders.”
“Oi, that reminds me, you know anything about the slaughter of a full unit of taijiya a few years back?” Inuyasha asked. “Her friend Sango was the only survivor besides her brother who was somehow made by a youkai to kill his entire family. They never caught the bastard.”
Sesshomaru’s lips curled up slightly in a snarl. “I will look into it. One who would do something so dishonorable should not be permitted to get away with his crime.”
“Oh and we’re gonna need Hisako too,” InuYasha said. “If something comes up that needs me and Kagome we have to have someone here we can trust to watch the pups. Shiori will help out but we might need her sometimes too.”
“I never even thought of that,” Kagome said. “I know we won’t always be able to go together but if things get as bad as Shiori thinks they will then there are definitely going to be times when both of us are needed.”
“You okay with it being her?” InuYasha questioned. “I guess I should have asked you first but I didn’t want to forget since I was thinking about it and he was already here.”
Kagome nodded. “She did an okay job with you after all.”
He snorted but flashed her a grin. “So can we have her? It ain’t like you can’t spare her.”
“Hn, you always were for favorite for some unfathomable reason,” Sesshomaru said. “I assume you will want her to move in here.”
“That would probably be best,” Kagome said. “That way we won’t have to call and wait for her to arrive. There’s plenty of rooms she can choose from or there is even a small unit of guest apartments on the grounds for visiting dignitaries, if she prefers.”
“I will inform her of your request,” Sesshomaru said. “I would expect her presently. Now, if there is nothing further at the moment…”
InuYasha smirked but finally took Kazuki from his brother. “Don’t worry pup, it ain’t you. Sessho-oji-san just ain’t the cuddly type.”
Kagome giggled. “I don’t know that fluffy thing on his shoulder looks pretty cuddly to me.”
InuYasha laughed as Sesshomaru looked at his glorious mate as if he couldn’t believe he had heard her correctly. “Fluffy-oji-san, now that I like.”
“This Sesshomaru’s mokomoko-sama is not fluffy nor is it cuddly,” Sesshomaru said with as much disinterest and dignity as he could muster. “And never again will you refer to me as Fluffy-oji-san if you wish to retain the ability to have children with your miko in the future.”
Kagome snickered as she tried to get herself under control. “Of course, Sesshomaru-sama. You are right. Forgive me. I meant no offense. I’m sure it is quite the fearsome accessory.”
“How, little brother, did you manage to find the one woman in the world more impertinent than you?” Sesshomaru asked as he came to his feet.
“Just lucky I guess,” InuYasha replied with a grin.
Sesshomaru resisted the urge to roll his eyes as he straightened his back and exited through the back door. Just before he took his energy form he heard the miko ask just exactly what his mokomoko was anyway and the raucous laughter that followed. It was completely undignified and no doubt one of the many defects of their humanity to be so easily amused. He was most definitely not amused.
