Happy Memorial Day Everyone!...ok so it’s a little late but it’s the thought that counts right? Well here we are back again, sorry for the long delay my muse went MIA halfway through this chapter and only recently came back to me T.T….So we are just going to jump back into the story. So without further adeu…On with the Show! ############## The group was greeted warmly when they entered the courtyard. Shippo was hiding in Ikaru’s shirts, and felt her chuckle at his antics. He jumped to her shoulder to escape the boy plowing into her stomach and screaming “Nee-saaan!” The boy was followed closely by a little girl, one like Shippo had never seen before. The two children were ignoring him for the moment, the one too busy chattering to take any notice of him, the other too busy attaching herself thoroughly to Ikaru’s leg. An older couple soon followed the children along with a younger couple. Shippo was too nervous to hear the conversations going on though. “Musume it is good to see you safely back to us.” InuTaishio said helping her to her feet. Rin moved into Inutaishio’s arms snuggling into his hold while Inuyasha held onto Ikaru. It was then he noticed the kit hiding under her hair. “Nee-san who’s this?” Inuyasha asked trying to get a better look at Shippo. “These are special people to me little one, they will no sooner do you harm than bring harm to me. Come out and introduce yourself.” Ikaru said to the shivering lump in her hair, she just knew she was going to have a large rats nest to comb out of her hair later. Slowly Shippo emerged from his hiding place. By this point Ikaru had knelt to the ground to set Inuyasha down. Slowly he made it to the ground standing timidly in front of Ikaru, but his voice refused to work. Ikaru sighed and introduced him after he only managed to produce a squeak after several tries. “This is Shippo my new ward.” Ikaru smiled at him encouragingly. Shippo gulped but managed a small ‘Nice to meet you.’ He jumped when Kagome cooed at him. “He is such a handsome little one.” Kagome smiled kindly to him as she knelt down closer to his level. “My name is Kagome, I am Ikaru’s blood sister it is very nice to meet you.” Shippo blushed and nodded. “This is her daughter Rin.” Inutaishio said as knelt beside Kagome holding the smiling little girl. She waved at him and gave her best heart melting smile to Shippo. His eyes suddenly bulged and he jumped into Ikaru’s shirts squeaking “Human!” Rin looked confused and a little hurt. Kagome looked to Ikaru who sighed and fished the shivering kit out of her shirts. She brought him up to eye level and raised an eyebrow at him. “Indeed she is human, what bearing does that have to do with the fact she is part of my pack? She merely wishes to know you, and you, though smaller, are many times stronger than her. So explain to me kit, why it is you are acting so irrationally toward her. You have hurt her feelings as well and should apologize.” Ikaru scolded setting him down in front of Rin again. He looked down guiltily. “I’m sorry mama…it’s just I’ve never met a human before. The stories the castle staff used to tell were never very flattering towards humans…most of the stories scared me.” He missed the shocked looks of the family surrounding him when he called Ikaru ‘mama.’ “Then your first lesson with me kit will be to learn to judge others based on their actions toward you, not on stories based on a few individuals.” Ikaru said sternly. Shippo nodded and looked shyly up toward Rin. She again smiled at him and tried wiggling out of Inutaishio’s grasp. He chuckled and set the girl gently on her feet. She fussed with her green checkered kimono for a moment before smiling again and bowing politely to Shippo. He bowed back and gave her a very small smile. “I gather she is allowed to walk now?” Ikaru smiled at the girl. “She is nee-san but only for a little while…the rest of the time I carry her!” Inuyasha stuck his chest out proudly. “You seem to be doing an excellent job taking care of her Inuyasha.” Ikaru smiled ruffling his hair and playfully tweaking one of his furry ears. “How about you three go and play in the field and get to know each other, we will come and fetch you shortly for the evening meal.” “Can Heero come with us?” Shippo whispered to her. “No he has his own duties to attend to.” Ikaru sighed looking at the still visibly frightened kit. “Be brave little one. Inuyasha will be as good a friend as Koga and the others if you give him a chance, Rin undoubtedly doubly so, you merely have to give them a chance.” Ikaru smiled at him. He looked at the two eager children then back into Ikaru’s comforting stare before nodding. “Yes!!! Come on Shippo I know this really fun game Rin can play with us!” Inuyasha said as he grabbed Shippo’s hand and dragged him quickly toward the field, Rin easily jumped onto his back as they ran toward the field. “Musume does that kit belong to who I think he belongs to?” Inutaishio asked when the pups were out of earshot. “Let us talk in your study papa…we have much to discuss.” Ikaru said her voice unusually calm. Inutaishio nodded and they all made their way to his study. Ikaru made her way over to his window that looked out over the field that the soldiers usually trained in, but was now being used by the children to play leapfrog. She smirked at the innocent sight noticing Shippo was still shy about touching Rin, but he was participating none the less. With her back to the group she revealed what she knew. “There has been a coup in the South. The eldest son of the southern lord desired the throne and his sister as his mate. His father denied him both, as a result he hired the cannibal tribe, and in league with his brother and the assassins annihilated the whole of the rest of his family. The kit and his sister are all that remain from the takeover. I found the kit in the neutral forest about to be killed by his brother. I dispatched the threat and took the kit into my care. My scouts annihilated the assassins and recovered most of the bodies; we gave them an eastern sending and they now lay buried in eastern soil.” Ikaru said never taking her eyes off the playing children. “What of the oldest brother is their nothing to be done about him, and what about his sister?” Kagome asked walking up to Ikaru and watching the kit with sad eyes. “There was nothing I could do, there was no evidence to connect him to the crime but the testimony of the kit, and no elder would accept that as evidence, nor do I believe the kit able to deliver the story again. As for his sister, her brother continually violates her to try and produce an heir and force a mating. Regardless of what you might think sister, it is still the woman’s choice as to who her mate is; she must accept him mentally if nothing else. He is trying to break her and force her to accept him.” Ikaru said in a solemn voice. “So your spies found nothing, and left no evidence?” Sesshoumaru said eyeing his saddening mate. “No, my spies disposed of the assassins responsible leaving nothing behind and the one I killed has left nothing in this world but the memories in that kit.” Ikaru said raising an eyebrow at her brother. “He clings to you dear; it was quite a shock to all of us when he called you ‘mama.’ Care to explain that?” Izayoi said. “He is trying to bring some semblance of normalcy back into his life that has been turned completely upside down.” Ikaru said retuning her eyes to the playing children. “What is it you have promised him musume?” Inutaishio asked. “I promised him my protection and to prepare him so that when he is old enough he can take on his brother in a leadership battle and reclaim his lands.” Ikaru said turning to her father and raising her eyebrow at him. “That is a large commitment musume; you realize you’re essentially becoming a mother to the boy.” Inutaishio said eyeing his daughter’s back. “It was his parent’s last request that I watch over him, and if one day I saw him as my own they gave their blessings for me to claim him as such.” Ikaru said looking at her father who understood immediately how she had gotten such a blessing. “They remained that long in this realm?” Inutaishio said looking concerned. “They only stayed to see to the wellbeing of their son, they now rest in peace in the afterlife, though much longer might have been hazardous to their spirits wellbeing.” Ikaru said looking back at the group. Kagome’s look caused Ikaru to chuckle, her head was cocked to the side and she looked adorably confused. “I see the spirits of the deceased sister, the longer the spirits of the dead linger without moving on to their final rest the greater the chance that they will be corrupted and turn into vengeful spirits. Once a spirit is corrupted they may never find peace in the afterlife.” She explained. Kagome nodded in understanding. “Then it’s good to hear that his parents were able to find their peace and move on.” Kagome nodded. “Yes, but enough about me there is a pressing matter that must be addressed and while I have you all here I might as well let you all know that the elder council has accepted my petition to meet them and introduce Kagome to them as Sesshoumaru’s mate and a Princess of the West and East.” Ikaru said laughing at the flabbergasted look on Inutaishios face. “Musume when have you possibly had the time to send a petition to the elder council and why didn’t you at least let me know you’d done it?” Inutaishio said regaining his composure. “There hasn’t been time; I sent it while I was in the east. The land dispute was near where the elder council was traveling at the time and I sent the message during a recess and received the reply by that evening. I didn’t have time to send word after that unfortunately. They said they’d be in the area the day after tomorrow and would hear us out then.” Ikaru said and Izayoi paled. “The day after tomorrow! Oh no there isn’t time to prepare anything!” Izayoi began to panic, before rushing from the room and began barking out orders like a drill sergeant. The remaining inhabitants of the room stood silently for a few moments before Kagome began to giggle and Ikaru outright laughed. The two men looked at them with matching expressions of confusion. “Before she left, Ikaru had the basic things prepared in advance so they could easily be prepared on short notice when the elder council arrived.” Kagome said in between giggling fits. “Musume you realize you’ve put me into a dangerous situation when she figures this all out…she’d never dream of punishing you, but she will no doubt take her frustrations out on me.” Inutaishio cringed as he heard another barked order through the door. “Then I suggest you develop eyes in the back of your head papa.” Ikaru said as she made ready to leave the room. “I’ll come with you Ikaru I would really love to hear more about little Shippo.” Kagome smiled as she took Ikaru’s arm and walked with her out of the room. “She did that on purpose didn’t she musuko?” Inutaishio pouted. “You should know better than that by now oto-san.” Sesshoumaru said with not even an ounce of sympathy. “My children are so cruel to me…and I’ve done absolutely nothing to deserve it.” Inutaishio whined dramatically, only to notice a second later that he had been left alone in his study. He chuckled to himself as he left his study to help his mate with the preparations. Ikaru and Kagome had made it outside unheeded by the flurry of servants and the frantic Izayoi. Kagome had been pondering their conversation from the study. “Is it true there is nothing to be done for his sister?” Kagome said when they were almost to the meadow; dusk had almost given way to nighttime. “She must remain strong, even if he manages to pup her somehow she can still refuse his suit. It is frowned upon to mate a sibling; we learned long ago from the Egyptians how much inbreeding can harm the line. It is not completely banned, however and does on very rare occasions occur. Typically the closest relative one can mate without any problems are third cousins.” Ikaru explained. “Then couldn’t the council intercede and remover her from his side?” Kagome said. “The council will do nothing without definitive and unquestionable proof. Like I said the practice is frowned upon but not completely banned. So while he will receive some ridicule about his decision, there is nothing anyone can do at the moment.” Ikaru frowned. “The poor thing…I hope for Shippo’s sake she can hold on.” Kagome sighed. “Only time will tell sister.” Ikaru said as they finally entered the meadow. Shippo had finally relaxed enough to truly be enjoying himself in the game. It was easy to see he had accepted the other two children as friends. “Come you three it is time to wash up for the evening meal!” Ikaru called. Three disappointed looks greeted her. Kagome laughed as Ikaru raised her eyebrow at them. Inuyasha knew better than to disobey his sister for long, so he quickly gathered Rin onto his back and grabbed Shippo’s hand before running into the castle to do as they were told. “One day you are going to have to let me in on your secret Ikaru.” Kagome chuckled as she and Ikaru slowly walked back into the castle. “I have no secret. Inuyasha knows the penalties of disobeying. I have to say I have been quite creative over the years in my punishments for him.” Ikaru chuckled. Kagome’s curiosity was killing her so she pestered Ikaru until they had entered her rooms and finally Ikaru told her some of the tricks she had pulled on Inuyasha to punish him for his misbehavior. Kagome was in awe, never once had she raised her hand to her brother but somehow she had managed to always suitably punish him. Kagome almost wished she could take notes. A short while later the family was assembled at the table chatting quietly amongst themselves when the Scottish dogs made their entrance. “Oi lass, it is good to see ye back with us.” Dagley boomed before taking the seat across from her. “It is good to be back Lord Dagley, though I am surprised that you are still here so long after the formal meeting.” Ikaru raised an eyebrow at him before returning the greetings of the rest of his group. Connor was noticeably absent. “Aye lass, it has been many years since most of our treaties have been updated, so unfortunately it has required an extended stay on our part. Connor managed to finish his business up early and has already left.” Dagley smirked at her. She suspected he had something to do with how quickly Connor had left. “So lass, who is the wee fur ball beside you?” Gavin said pointing to Shippo. “This is my new ward Shippo.” Ikaru said. Shippo managed a weak ‘nice to meet you’ before focusing on pushing his food around his plate. Dagley didn’t miss with worry that slipped through Ikaru’s eyes nor the motherly gleam there as she patted his head and resumed her meal shortly before he began eating his again. He thought he might ask her about it later if he could get her alone. Later that night after tucking Shippo in bed with Inuyasha and Rin, Ikaru began wandering the halls of the castle for a while before making her way to the training field. She was only alone for a moment before Lord Dagley came upon her. “Lass what are ye doin’ out so late. Ye should be fast asleep by now to recover from yer journey.” Dagley gently chastised before taking a seat beside her. “Sleep simply would not come. I have much on my mind and it refuses to let me rest.” Ikaru said never breaking her gaze from the moon. “What thoughts trouble ye lass, mayhaps I could help ye puzzle through some of them?” Dagley offered. “I’m afraid old friend that isn’t possible.” Ikaru said finally looking at him. He had to keep from flinching at the empty look in her eyes that clearly spoke of the heavy burdens she carried. He reached forward and brushed her cheek with the tips of his fingers. “A lass shouldna have to carry such heavy burdens by themselves.” He whispered. Ikaru gently touched his hand before moving out of reach. “One day Dagley I am certain you will make a lucky woman very happy.” Ikaru said smirking at her old friend. “The offer still stands lass; you could be that lucky lady.” He smirked at her. She chuckled at him and shook her head. “I must again decline old friend, but I thank you for trying to lift my spirits.” She smiled at him before rising to leave. After she had disappeared into the castle Dagley sighed and laid back to look at the moon. “Lass yer far too young to be carrying such heavy burdens on yer own, if ye would give me a chance I would gladly carry that burden with ye.” Dagley confessed to the moon. “I fear old friend I have fallen well and truly for the lass, but if a friend is all she will consider me then a truer friend she’ll have no need to find, and I swear to you now she will always have me as such.” Having bared his heart to the ever silent moon Dagley got up and headed for his own chamber. The next day passed without incident and then came the day the elders would arrive. Izayoi was running around frantically trying to get the last of the details ironed out, Inutaishio was unsuccessfully trying to help but was finally chased away by a vicious growl from his normally sweet mate. Seeing Sesshoumaru walking down a hall nearby he called out to his son. “Have you seen your sister today son. Maybe I could help her since my mate has just banished me from her presence.” Inutaishio said feigning a hurt look. “You were purposefully picking at your mate to raise her ire; I am surprised she put up with you for as long as she did, as for Ikaru she has been prepping Kagome in her chambers since we broke our fast this morning.” Sesshoumaru said never taking his eyes off the documents in his hand. Inutaishio saw the stress lines in his sons hand and knew he was trying to keep his temper in check. Inutaishio patted his son on his back. “She will do just fine son, you chose well.” Sesshoumaru looked at his father and nodded. “We will be right there with her and know that I will take on the council myself if need be to protect her.” Inutaishio said confidently clapping his son again on his back before retreating to his studies to work on some paperwork to pass the time. The hours seemed to crawl by and Kagome got more nervous as the time ticked slowly bye. Ikaru had dressed in an eastern formal kimono that matched hers and was the exact shade of her eastern moon. She had also been prepping her for the things that would probably happen to her in the chamber. “It is likely they will bombard you with questions, answer as truthfully as you are able to, but do not tell them you were born a human. They will likely poke and prod you, purposefully digging their claws into you to illicit a reaction, some may even try to envenom you. You needn’t fear that though as my blood now runs through you making you immune to most all venoms. They will belittle you, yell at you, and do whatever it takes to get a rise out of you. You must keep your reactions in check.” Ikaru recited again. “What sort of test is this?” Kagome sighed in exasperation. “One to see what you are made of…” Ikaru said adjusting her formal headdress. “It’s my belief they do it for nothing other than their enjoyment, a show of their power if you will. It’s unfortunate that they dislike my brother so much.” “Why?” Kagome asked as Ikaru moved to place a similar headdress on her head. “When mama died the elder council insisted that papa take a new mate immediately, and shamelessly shoved their own children and grandchildren at him. Aniki became enraged and attempted to attack the elders. Papa and I were able to hold him back, but the raw power he showed put a fear into the elders, on the positive side it allowed papa to choose his own mate in his own time, on the bad side the elders still fear him because the power he exhibited as a child has grown exponentially in the man you mated.” Ikaru explained. “And you’re just as strong as Sesshoumaru…” Kagome said. “Yes thus the council fears us, if they had the option they would have had us killed off long ago, and with any luck you will leave the same impression on them today for both of our blood flows in you.” Ikaru smirked as she rose and allowed Kagome to look at herself. Ikaru had matched every facet of their looks that she could. Their hair had been tied back into low ponytails; their makeup had been done in golden hues and golden jewelry hung from their ears and necks. The headdresses were lavish and had golden strings that fell entwining with their hair. Ikaru adjusted Kagome’s bangs to where they framed her twin crescents. “Wear them proudly from now on sister.” Ikaru said walking toward the door. “I will; will you be by my side?” Kagome said her voice wavering only slightly. “I’ll be there the whole time, even if they wanted to expel me from the chamber they couldn’t. Sister, in the chamber use your gift of sight, see the ties that bind the group and use those ties to your advantage.” Ikaru smirked; Kagome only looked confused momentarily before a conspiratorial look passed between the women. When they walked out of Ikaru’s chamber Lord Dagley was leaning casually against the opposite wall. “Well lass ye certainly look quite fetching in all that official mess, and ye as well wee one.” Dagley laughed and bowed to the women who laughed with him. “You know how I hate this official mess Dagley. What are you all dressed up for if I may ask?” Ikaru raised an eyebrow at him. Pointing out his freshly scrubbed and shaved face and what had to be his most official kilt. “Well I figured I ne’er been to one of these elder meetings of yers and figured the wee one could use another one to show their support of her. That and I figured if I waited here long enough I would have the honor of escorting you two lovely lassies into battle so to speak.” He chuckled. “Thank you Dagley, you have no idea how much I appreciate it.” Kagome smiled brightly at him. “Think nothing of it wee one, now shall we be off to battle then?” He held his arms out for the two women to take which they quickly did and he led them to the meeting chamber that had been set up for the elders. He had to leave them at the door to go and join the rest of the spectators, but he gave them both a solid pat on the back before wishing them luck and going to find a seat. The doors were slowly opened. Ikaru and Kagome took slow measured steps, with Kagome a step behind Ikaru with her head bowed. When they reached the center of the room Ikaru began the introduction. “I present to you, the elder council and all those present Lady Kagome, my blood sister and princess of the East! She has also mated my brother, Prince Sesshoumaru of the West, and carries within her his heir. Bound by blood and rites she is a Princess of the West and East!” Ikaru’s voice boomed in the room and Kagome took her cue to raise her head and show the crowd the crescents that matched Ikaru’s. Murmurs erupted from the crowd and suddenly the elders emerged from the darkness to surround them. They all looked ancient, their skin was thin and their veins stood out starkly. Several had cloudy sightless eyes, but every one of them still had perfectly white and wickedly sharp fangs. As Ikaru had predicted they poked and prodded her mercilessly, drawing blood on several occasions. One elder even tried to poison her, which as Ikaru predicted did nothing; her skin didn’t even turn red. On the contrary any of the elders who let their claws come into contact with her blood ended up losing the claw tips that contacted the blood. She didn’t even flinch. Then came the questions. “Where are you from girl….” An elder asked, it was the third time she had been asked this question. He was obviously a snake demon. “I come from the southwest.” She answered, not revealing the whole truth. “That is a human realm…” Another elder commented. “I never had any trouble living there.” Another half-truth. “What are you exactly girl?” A blind wolf elder asked. “I don’t know…” She said. “That is not an answer girl…be more specific….” The snake elder hissed at her. “I meant milords that I was born in the human southwestern realm but I have no knowledge of my lineage.” She said; she was getting good at these half-truths. “Unacceptable…we will not know the lineage of the western heir…” The snake hissed at her. “He is mine and Sesshoumaru’s child what more do you have to know.” Kagome said cocking her eyebrow at him. The snake elder would likely be her biggest problem judging by the ties that bound him to the rest of the group. He walked up to her and boldly placed his hand where her baby bump was and began digging his claws through the fabric into her. Sesshoumaru could be heard growling in the background, but it was Kagome who surprised everyone, but Ikaru that is. She grabbed the elders hand and twisted it away from her belly finding the pressure point and bringing him to his knees. “You will bring no harm to this child while I still draw breath.” She growled in his pain wracked face, the first showing of real emotion since the gathering had begun. “That is enough!” The eldest of the elders barked, he was an ancient dog demon who had remained quietly in the background until the snake elder had crossed the line. Kagome saw there was barely a tie between the snake and the dog elder showing that they weren’t close, but the ties that bound the ancient elder to the rest of the group were bright and strong. “Hebi there are some lines you should not cross in an inquiry such as this, and the main one in this type of inquiry is to threaten the life of this child’s pup.” The old dog stared at the hissing elder whom Kagome still held in a submissive position. He waddled slowly over to Kagome’s side and patted her hand gently. “Let him go now child, your pup is in no danger from us.” Kagome slowly nodded and released Hebi. The elder hissed and retreated to nurse his hand. “Forgive him child, he gets carried away at times. May I?” The ancient dog looked up to her with startling clear blue eyes motioning toward her stomach. Kagome nodded and the ancient dog pressed his palm gently to her stomach. “Ahh the pup you carry is a strong one…he will make a fine addition to the western household.” The old dog nodded and smiled up at Kagome, Kagome held her stomach lovingly and smiled back at him. Looking into her eyes the ancient dog saw something lurking behind the golden flecked blue eyes of the lovely female before him, a power resided in the girl more powerful than she herself may have even realized. The power provided by the mixing of the blood of two of the strongest demons in their society seemed to only augment her natural power. She could be a dangerous force if opposed. Decision made he turned to the other elders and nodded. “She has my approval what of the rest of you?” The elder dog called in a voice cracked with age. Almost all of the elders raised their hands in approval. Hebi was of course against it, but only two others decided to side with him. “Well then with a majority vote you have our blessings my dear, congratulations and good luck.” The old dog patted her hands again before moving away from her. Kagome and Ikaru bowed before turning and slowly walking back out of the chamber. When the doors closed behind them Ikaru enveloped Kagome in a hug. “I don’t know how you did it sister but well done!” Ikaru smiled at her. “How I did what?” Kagome said confused. “Convinced the old dog to vote in your favor; I can count the amount of times he has voted in anyone’s favor on one hand. You considered the snake elder your enemy, while he was against you if the dog elder didn’t approve of you, you would have been in serious trouble. His vote essentially sways the rest of the group.” Ikaru explained. “I just did what you told me, I told as close to the truth as I was able to, but I don’t think that’s what convinced him. He seemed to come to a decision after feeling the pup’s strength and looking into my eyes?” Kagome said looking thoughtful. “Then he must have seen what we all feel. You are strong sister and more than worthy of the position as aniki’s mate.” Ikaru smiled at her. Kagome hugged Ikaru’s arm before releasing it to walk over to her mate. He stood in the hallway waiting on her, but Dagley met her first. “Well done wee one, just wanted to let ye know.” H smirked at her when Sesshoumaru growled behind him. “Thank you Lord Dagley, now I think I better attend to my mate before he rips your heart out and tries serving it to me for my dinner.” Kagome giggled at him as Dagley made an overly flourished bow and got out of her way. She walked over to her aggravated mate and grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled him down claiming his lips. He wasted no time wrapping his arms around her and holding her close to him deepening the kiss. Dagley looked surprised for a moment before Ikaru tugged his arm they quietly took their leave. “Ye did well lass.” Was all he said. “She gained the elders approval, as surprising as that was, however, I am proud of her.” Ikaru said as Dagley walked her back to her rooms. “Tell me somethin’ lass, would yer brother have really ripped my heart out and tried serving it to the wee one for her dinner?” Dagley asked when they reached her door. “He would have not only served your heart on a silver platter Dagley, he would have ripped your balls off and served them to her roasted on a skewer and then likely served her your liver raw.” Ikaru said watching as the color drained from Dagley’s face. He visibly gulped and bid her goodnight, and she decided to take mercy on him. “Dagley! If it is any consolation Kagome would not have let him do any of those things.” She smirked when his gait returned to a more normal pace. When he was out of sight she closed her door and began the arduous task of dis entangling herself from her formal robes. In the process she stumbled and tripped over the stool in front of her vanity and fell face first in a mass of silk and gold. “DAMN IT!!!
