Epilogue (part 2)

Time passed and Kagome watched her son grow. At first, it seemed that he hid in the shadows of his older sisters. However, when his father gifted his first katana upon him on his third birthday, Osamu stood in no one�s shadow any longer.

The pup inherited his father�s grace and poise, now nearly a decade and a half after his hands first grasped a hilt, many marveled at his mastery of the blade. Kagome watched from under the shade of the cherry trees as her son took on his two sisters as well as Yuichi. Nothing, it seemed, that any of his opponents did could cause even a minuscule crack in his stoic fa�ade. �Never show any weakness.� The first lesson he learned from his father.

Hearing the cry of pain, Kagome quickly rose to her feet to see who had been injured. Yuichi lay behind Masumi, as Akira hovered over his bleeding form. The cry that wretched itself from her youngest daughter�s throat was filled with such anguish that it tore at Kagome�s very soul.

Horror filled eyes watched as Akira launched herself at Osamu with a ferocity that the female had never displayed before. Her clawed hands glowed with iridescence of reiki. For the first time in nearly a decade, Osamu�s eyes widened in shock during a battle. As the two fell to the ground, his skin began to smolder under his sister�s assault. It was Masumi that pulled her sister off her brother as Kagome managed to reach the group.

Immediately, she dropped at her son�s side to check his wounds. When assured that they were superficial, she moved to Yuichi. His, though more severe than Osamu�s, were nothing to worry anyone with youkai blood. Hearing her daughter�s snarls in the background, she motioned for Osamu to take her place to help Yuichi to his feet.

Kagome stood in front of her daughters, one�s face strained with exertion while the other�s was lost in feral instincts. Pulsing her aura in such a way that had always calmed her children, she watched as Akira came back to herself.

�What do you have to say for yourself?� Her tone held all the ice she had learned to mimic from her mate.

Akira reverted to the mindset of a frightened pup. Whimpering and baring her neck, she fell to her knees before her mother. Though it pulled at Kagome�s heart to be harsh with any of those she considered family or friend, she had seen too often where the path of revenge led.

�Do not play the fool with me, Akira. I care not for your simpering cries. You could have killed your brother on this day, and all because you allowed revenge to cloud your vision from the correct path.� Kagome�s sapphire orbs steeled as she bore them down into her daughter�s face, while at the same time raising her voice enough so that all would hear this lesson. �Revenge is always forged in malice. While you might feel a moment of glory, soon the emptiness will consume you.

�Dear gentle Akira, if you had kept your mind clear you could have helped your companion heal while your elder sister guarded you. My heart would still be light and free as I watched you from the shade of the trees, but you did not. Now, for that choice we stand with two injured.�

�But mama-�

�Do not speak. It was your own need for vengeance that caused you to injury your own pack mate. There is no excuse that will lessen the burden that you must now carry. You have made your choice and now I pray that you learn from it.� Allowing her small hand to caress her daughter�s face, Kagome allowed her eyes to soften as she gazed down at the mournful female. Stepping back, she took in the sight of all those she considered her children, three by blood, one not.

Kagome�s voice rang out again, �Know that you are all young and have many mistakes ahead of you, and while you will feel the shame of them never forget to learn from them. I love you all, and it had been many years since I have feared that I might lose another I love to vengeance. This day reminded me how easily it weaves itself into even the most pure of intentions. Guard against it.

�Now, go prepare for the evening meal.�

Quickly they all bowed their heads to their mother, and left to carry out her order. Kagome remained in the grass, her eyes closed, head tilted back as the sun bathed its rays on her. Who knows how long she stood like that before her mate made his presences known.

�It is tradition amongst youkai and humans alike to seek revenge for wrongs done.� His rich baritone made her smile.

Without opening her eyes, she replied, �Not all traditions should withstand the test of time.�

�Hn.� Amber eyes lazily soaked in the form of his greatest joy, and his greatest headache. �Yet, honor does not allow us to change tradition to fit our whims.�

Opening her eyes, she smiled broader at him. �True, but survival of the fittest dictates that antiquated things will not stand the test of time. Besides, they are my children and I wish that they not lose their innocence too young.�

There would be no point in arguing with her on this; she would never retract her state to the pups. In addition, she had a point about how revenge often consumed lesser beings.

It was in moments like these that her humanity stood out and it was oddly comforting. Many years had passed since the great Sesshoumaru admitted to himself that he loved this woman because of her humanity, not in spite of it.
