Chapter 32 – After Lunch
When the trio left the inn, Inuyasha was weighed down by the many packages of leftovers and extra desserts Kagome wanted, though she still hadn’t explained what she planned to do with all the food. They headed directly to the leather worker’s shop to pick up the miko’s new dagger. Sesshoumaru was happy to have his hands free as he accepted the offered item from the youkai and turned to face Kagome. It was his turn to touch and tease, and he was going to enjoy it. He also had a point he wanted to make.
There was something about the look in his eyes that made Kagome take a step back. “What are you doing?” she asked nervously.
“Helping you try on your new weapon, of course,” he purred at her. When he moved to kneel, however, she grasped the front of his armor tightly.
“Don’t you dare,” she murmured softly, hating the knowledge that everyone in the vicinity could hear her perfectly. There simply was no privacy when surrounded by a village full of demons. “You can’t.” He couldn’t kneel at her feet the way Inuyasha had when he was measuring her. He couldn’t willingly take such a submissive position in public, with dozens of pairs of eyes on them.
“I can,” Sesshoumaru told her reassuringly, “and I will. Word will spread quickly that you are my intended. They may as well know the truth of it now, because there is no hiding it.”
“The truth of what?” Kagome asked, glancing at Inuyasha for help. The hanyou merely shrugged with a smirk on his face. He had no problem with what his brother intended to do. Sesshoumaru’s actions would only serve to reassure her that he loved her wholly and without reservation, and that nothing could come between them. Especially not his public façade.
“The truth of my devotion,” Sesshoumaru spoke, his mask nowhere to be seen, allowing love to show on his face.
Word would spread quickly that he had chosen a mate. Every detail of this day would be recounted hundreds of times over as the story made its way to the farthest parts of Japan and beyond. He wanted that story to include this gesture that made it clear who she was to him and what she meant, so everyone would know that to hurt her would result in a painful death. She was cherished. She wasn’t a political choice, or a grab for more power. He loved her and he would live his whole life on his knees if it would make her happy.
“But everyone’s looking. You can’t.”
“I want them all to see, and spread the news that I have chosen a mate,” he rumbled, and dropped to one knee in the dust, smirking at her blush. She was far too concerned about appearances; something he found he no longer cared about when it concerned her. Sesshoumaru gave the bottom of her skirt a playful flick before placing the dagger against her thigh and pulling the fabric out of the way. “Hold this, please,” he asked her and Kagome did so, holding the dagger in place so he could work with the straps with both hands.
His palms slid up her leg teasingly and the miko let out an impressive growl. “Hands at respectful positions only,” she scolded softly and he fought down the desire to laugh.
“As you wish,” he acquiesced easily, affixing the dagger, strap by strap, to her upper thigh. When he was finished, he leaned back slightly and took in the sight. Seeing her with a weapon hidden only by her skirt was incredibly attractive, but there was something off about the weapon, something he couldn’t put his finger on.
“Not bad, eh?” Inuyasha asked. “How’s it feel?”
Kagome shifted around and took a few steps, before returning to her place before Sesshoumaru, who was still kneeling on the ground. “It feels odd, but I suppose I’ll get used to it.”
“Pull the blade,” the taiyoukai instructed and she did so, studying the highly shined metal.
She hadn’t had a chance to look it over earlier, and took a moment to follow the lines carved in it. It was far too fancy for her; that much she knew. It felt awkward in her hand and she wasn’t convinced that she would actually be able to use a dagger to defend herself.
“You gonna teach me how to use it?” she asked the taiyoukai, who nodded. She went to sheath the blade, only for Sesshoumaru to stop her hand seconds before she stabbed herself right in the leg.
“There is no guard,” he said, anger rising in his voice. He turned his eyes to the leather worker, who was frozen with fear. Youkai didn’t typically need guards on their items, as they had the coordination to sheath a blade easily, as well as the healing abilities that made a small cut a non-issue. She was human, however, and the craftsman should have thought of that.
"I'm so sorry,” the worker gushed, ready to drop to his knees in front of Sesshoumaru and beg for his life. “I don’t often put guards on my items and I wasn’t thinking. One can be added. It would only take a few more minutes. I can do it while you continue your shopping and find you when it’s finished. I’m so sorry, my lady,” he continued, turning his focus to Kagome. “I should have done thought of your safety. I did not intend for you to be injured.”
“And I wasn’t,” Kagome replied with a kind smile. “It’s fine. Isn’t it, Sesshoumaru?”
The taiyoukai hid a scowl as he undid the straps and rose to his feet. She could have been injured by this fool’s forgetfulness and he was supposed to just let it go? If he hadn’t stopped her, she would be bleeding right now. That knowledge unsettled him. He also found room to feel guilty himself. He realized something was missing on the piece, but he didn’t figured out what until she was nearly hurt. He should have checked for a guard before even allowing the shopkeeper to affix the item to the dagger. He decided it was his fault as much as the worker, so he could let it go, but only because that was what Kagome wanted.
He plucked the dagger from her hand and sheathed it, before handing the piece back to the shopkeeper to fix once more. “If it is not right this time, I shall find someone else,” Sesshoumaru told the very relieved youkai before turning his focus back to Kagome, who was fussing over the dirt on his pant leg. He held back the urge to roll his eyes at her dramatics. He stomped his foot twice and at the shock in her eyes as all the dirt fell away, leaving him in pristine white once more.
“Is that because it’s youkai fabric?” she asked in amazement. When the taiyoukai gave a small nod, she grinned. “I guess maybe it does have its benefits after all.” She remembered just how dirty she was at the end of a day spent walking dirt roads and forest paths, and she wouldn’t mind fabric that kept itself clean. It sounded like a godsend.
“Come,” he murmured, tucking her under his arm while wrapping his fur around her waist. “I wish for you to truly look at the jewelers’ offerings and tell this Sesshoumaru what you like or do not, and why.” Sesshoumaru was no longer as concerned with buying her things immediately, mostly because she gave him something to focus his instincts on, something she wanted him to obtain. Now he was on a mission to make that request perfect.
“Why?”
“So we can figure out the perfect rings,” Inuyasha chimed in, knowing where his brother’s mind was.
Kagome smiled. “You’re both too sweet. Wait, so why does the fire rat get dirty then?”
Inuyasha shrugged, having no earthly idea, but Sesshoumaru knew the answer. “The fire rat lives underground, as close to lava sources as possible. Their fur protects them from the heat and acts as a type of armor, but does little to keep them clean. In fact, the dirt insulates them further. Inuyasha’s clothing was made solely from the fur of the fire rat. Your new clothing shall be more similar to mine than to my brother’s, though it will be fire resistant as well.” When she gave him a questioning look, he continued. “The newer youkai fabrics are made from a blend of sources, giving them several desirable properties.”
The trio continued with their shopping, Kagome purchasing several different kinds of fruits, as well as some dried foods that would keep for longer. When they reached another jeweler, she did as Sesshoumaru asked, pointing out her favorite bits, so that both brothers were able to gain a sense of her style. Inuyasha already had some ideas because he had been to her time and seen her wear jewelry, but he still soaked in every word.
If they were making her an engagement ring and wedding bands, he wanted them to be perfect for her, and he knew Sesshoumaru would, too. Thankfully, his brother would have an idea of where to go to have them made, because the hanyou was clueless. He was certain, however, that between the two of them, they could give her something that took her breath away, something that represented the three of them, and would always serve as a reminder of their love and devotion.
Inuyasha was impressed with his brother. His actions had to have done a lot for her trust in him. She had obviously been worried about how the taiyoukai would behave with them in public and he felt Sesshoumaru had proven that she would come first, before his title, his lands, or his people and their opinions. He wasn’t afraid to show his affection and when he knelt at her feet, he made it very clear that appearances weren’t important compared to their miko. It was another action in their favor, taking them another step closer to her agreeing to their mating. It wouldn’t take long before she was wearing their marks, he was certain of it.
The hanyou was confused as she stopped at a table filled with oils, unsure what use she could have for the items, but she looked over each bottle with interest, sniffing and even testing a few by rubbing them between her fingers. When she selected a bottle, he couldn’t help but ask what she had planned for it.
“That is for me to know and you to find out,” she teased. “Unless you want me discussing the specifics of our little agreement openly in a youkai marketplace?” she asked with a wicked smirk.
She twirled her index finger in the air and Inuyasha’s eyes widened. He hadn’t forgotten about her desire to slip a finger somewhere very personal, but he hoped she would. It just seemed too weird for it to be something she was serious about, but she also promised he would enjoy it, so he kept his mouth shut. He still didn’t know everything about sex, and she wouldn’t want to do something he would hate. Besides, he already agreed, as it was necessary for their mating to occur at all. Still, the whole world didn’t need to know about how she intended on using that oil of hers. Inuyasha found it odd that oil was the only item Kagome purchased that she insisted on carrying herself.
Not long afterward, the leather worker found them and handed over the perfected dagger. Sesshoumaru made a great show of strapping the holster to her leg again, once more kneeling at her feet, and running his hands teasingly up her leg.
“Behave,” she scolded gently.
The taiyoukai looked up at her with a smirk. “Perhaps I need more training, as well.” He rose, and gently closed her open mouth. “You should wear it for the walk back to our den. It will help accustom you to the feeling of wearing it, and draw attention to any issues.”
“This is going to take some getting used to,” she agreed, as they began to walk once more. They reached the edge of the market soon after and Kagome sighed in relief. There were far less eyes on them now, as the houses grew farther and farther apart. Soon, they could see children playing in the distance, and Kagome called out to them, first a hello with an assurance of safety, and then an intriguing question, “Have any of you eaten food from the inn at the village before?”
She knew that it wasn’t likely. These children and their families living on the outskirts of town likely didn’t have the disposable income for food, other than what they grew and harvested, or hunted for themselves. Fancy desserts might as well not exist in their lives, and her smile widened as they came closer hesitantly.
“I’ve got enough for all of you: food and extra sweets.”
Soon, children surrounded the trio, Kagome leading them into a grassy area just off the dirt road, where she patiently opened package after package of leftovers. The children passed them around so that everyone had an opportunity to try everything they desired. Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha just watched, smiles on their faces, as she gave children a treat they might never have experienced in all their lives, all because she thought beyond the moment, because she chose to save what would have otherwise been wasted.
Sesshoumaru gave a small nod to a nervous mother peering out the window, hoping she wouldn’t be too frightened and ruin Kagome’s little picnic. Instead, parents began coming out of their houses and yards, bowing politely to their Lord and offering thanks for what they were sharing with the children.
“I hope it’s still early enough that I haven’t spoiled dinner,” the miko said to one youkai female who had her hand rested on her small son’s head affectionately.
“It would be worth spoiling dinner,” the mother replied, and Kagome’s smile brightened further. They were all so happy and thankful, and no one seemed too frightened of Sesshoumaru, either, which was a relief. “Thank you, my Lady, my Lords,” she said with a low bow, “for honoring us with your presence and your gifts.”
Once every scrap of inn food was eaten, Kagome said her goodbyes to the children and their families, and the three continued their walk back to their little love nest. Sesshoumaru kept glancing in her direction, his smile unrestrained.
He was in awe of her generosity and in that moment, he knew he couldn’t have chosen a better Lady for the West. She was so different from himself, so unique, that he knew together, along with Inuyasha, they would strike a peaceful and harmonious balance for their lands. The West would grow more fruitful and prosperous, the weak and the young would be safe and protected, and their enemies would bow before them, until none remained. He also knew that she would be instrumental in keeping peace between the lands. Yes, the West would be all the better for her role in their rule.
