(A/N: It's been a long week of being majorly sick right before finals. Not cool.)
Previously:
Naraku turned his body in a way to give the bystander a clear view of just how much he had enjoyed Kagome before donning his smirk and asking none too seriously, "Did you enjoy the show?" Kagome snapped her head up and whipped around, her frightened eyes locked onto intense gold; he caught her.
Chapter 31: Plots and Pain
"Thank you for being so patient, Sesshomaru," Naraku said in a manner that sounded more like he was bragging than expressing gratitude. Kagome quickly sat down, covering herself in embarrassment and smoothing out her clothes to make sure her skirt covered her seeping sex. Naraku put himself away as well and again shifted his appearance to be what it was before, sharp spikes and all.
"How long has he been there?" her voice cracked, humiliated at the possibility that Sesshomaru watched her and Naraku.
"He arrived shortly after I began taking you in the traditional position of mating dogs," Naraku explained as if it was no big deal that Sesshomaru had watched them. He already knew of their activities, or so Kagome herself had told him, what was the difference if he saw it for himself? He likely found them by following Kagome's lone scent, since the barrier concealed his.
"He was there the whole time you were taking me doggy style!?" she nearly screamed, trying to figure out why he let the "dirty voyeur" watch them, but then, it would not surprise her to find out Naraku was an exhibitionist, it would be mild compared to his other kinks. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I had no intention of stopping until I was done," he explained, understanding she would have turned shy and modest with knowledge of being watched. "Besides, as much as he is trying to hide it, our little performance has incited his lust as well." Sesshomaru scowled at Naraku's audacious guess. "Would you like to join us, Sesshomaru?" Naraku mocked boldly, knowing Sesshomaru could do nothing to him.
"Hey! Shouldn't you ask me first if I even want to, to..." Kagome spoke up, looking back and forth between the two demons, now a little worried she'd be used as a toy between them. Sesshomaru was getting even angrier with Kagome's acceptance of Naraku but seeming disgust at him. Not that he wanted her either, but it was an insult to his pride to be turned down by a human. Naraku, however, was pleased with her outburst, satisfied that she only wanted him.
"My apologies, Kagome," Naraku feigned sincerity, knowing her answer, "would you desire having two powerful demons pleasing that sweet body of yours?"
His words caused a deep blush, but before she could answer, Sesshomaru's agitated voice sounded, "Silence! I did not come here to rut with a filthy human and half-demon." During his observation of the copulating pair, he learned something that could most definitely be used against the vermin before him. Naraku's fangs lengthened without restraint, telling him that the amalgamated demon was much closer to Kagome than he, and likely they, had even realized. Being a full demon, he knew exactly what instinct that occurrence was linked with; Naraku's instinct to mark a mate was showing.
"But of course, you came here hoping to destroy me, did you not?" Naraku knew well enough the only thing Sesshomaru sought in his presence. "Well, I can assure you, that is impossible." His heart was not here; his life essence was removed from his being and transported far from this location.
"I now know exactly how to destroy you, Naraku," Sesshomaru responded easily, just as Naraku, having knowledge the other lacked. All he would have to do is kill Kagome once she was marked; the pain of losing a mate drove many demons to their own demise. He witnessed this torment first hand in his mother when his father died. "Your weakness is obvious." Keeping Kagome in his peripheral vision, he kept his sight focused on Naraku, watching both reactions.
"How absurd, I have no weaknesses," Naraku laughed. His lack of worry, it was very telling.
"You do, however, I wonder if you have noticed as of yet," Sesshomaru tossed a smirk back, knowing from other confidants just how painful it can be to resist that instinct, as Naraku was trying to do. It would not be long before he would succumb to the urge, and that would be his downfall.
Kagome stood shakily, and peeked out behind him, feeling more protected at his side as she watched them throw taunts. Now that Sesshomaru had found Naraku, was he going to come after her like he threatened? The presence of the small woman at his back reminded Naraku of the assumption her friends had come to about the dog before him and an idea formed how he could use that to his advantage. Ignoring the last vague taunt Naraku went a different direction, "It really is convenient that you sought me out, Sesshomaru, for you see, there is something I need from you." This was enough of a threat for Sesshomaru to draw Tokijin, the sword that was essentially forged from Naraku's body, how ironic. Discreetly letting one tail touch her bare leg, he established enough contact to speak into her mind, 'Return to you companions; run, and do not look back. Your amulet will keep you safe.'
No sooner than she grasped what he spoke did he leap away, and the two demons began clashing. She knew he had his reasons and turned to flee, presumably while Sesshomaru was preoccupied, but couldn't help glancing back to make sure Naraku was safe.
He knew she would not listen, the girl was too curious not to look, that's why he played it safe until she was out of range. If she saw him get struck, she'd panic and come running right back, even though no manner of damage could hurt him. When Sesshomaru found that simply slashing his sword was useless, he released a powerful blast that destroyed most of Naraku's body. Laughing from inside his barrier, his body began reforming as he flung the blast of energy back at Sesshomaru, and while the demon lord was staving off the attack he sent only a short while ago, Naraku sent a tentacle through the ground, only to come up behind Sesshomaru. Its aim was true enough, even as Sesshomaru leaped out of its path, and it succeeded in slicing off a piece of Sesshomaru's armless sleeve, the very thing Naraku was after. Pulling it into his barrier and having gotten what he wanted, he taunted while rubbing the fine fabric between his fingers, "This will do nicely. Until next time, Sesshomaru." Naraku ascended into a billowing, purple cloud and again, vanished completely.
Looking down at his torn sleeve, Sesshomaru pondered what Naraku could possibly want with a piece of his clothing. It contained very little power, only enough to regenerate, just as all demon clothing did, but nothing spectacular. 'What could his purpose be?' he sheathed his sword and began walking off, back to Rin, Jaken, and Ah-Un.
(A/N: Apologies to the people asking for a threesome, but this teaser of it is as close as it'll get. Its just too OOC for this story. Like Sesshomaru would ever drop his disgust at humans/half-demons and hatred for an enemy just for a quick lay. Sorry, not happening here.)
Her sprint back to her friends was even more tiring than the opposite, maybe because all she had to look forward to was questions. She had already sprayed herself with the perfume, so they shouldn't be able to scent anything on her, but she was always a bit apprehensive about getting caught. Just before getting to camp, she was halted by the fastest of the group, Kouga, as he picked up her scent and rushed to make sure she wasn't hurt from her "walk." He grasped her hands and began spewing apologies about making her mad when he noticed the dried blood spot on her finger, "Kagome, you're bleeding, are you okay?" The others arrived just in time to hear this and everyone crowded around her to check her over.
Realizing just what he meant and how she made herself bleed to begin with, she pulled her hand away and shoved the digit into her mouth. The distorted words bubbled out of her occupied lips as she remembered hurting herself on Naraku's spiked armor, "I-its okay, I just pricked my finger, on something… sharp."
(A/N: Spoiler Alert! Episode 124, with variations.
With a force incomprehensible, he impacted on the earthen ground before Kikyo, shattering the rock and drawing groundwater up to mix with his potent miasma. His massive raw power split the earth surrounding the clay woman and gave her nowhere to run, not that she would. She showed no reaction, firmly believing she was beyond his reach. She would pay for her miscalculation. She knew he hid himself away for a greater purpose, but she failed to comprehend that purpose being anything related to her, nor did she realize just how far the strands of his web reached. Under his oppressive power, even her marksmanship aim was off; he'd seen her take down enemies just as swift as he, and yet she failed to strike him. Eventually, he gave her the answer she sought, in the form of his most concentrated miasma being implanted into her hollow body. He wanted to see her pale skin stained with blood, but her imitation body could not give such a sight, not like Kagome, his Kagome. He had longed for the day when he could kill Kikyo, and yet, he found his mind wandering to the living girl instead, the one which desired him just as fiercely as he did she. She had just provided a far greater pleasure than this clay imitation ever could, still, he would enjoy taking her life. "Kikyo, this will be your burial ground," he declared as he struck her, casting her into the river of miasma flowing in the crevice below. Not a single scream, whimper, or plea, how boring.
He dropped his barrier and let his scent and aura flow, Inuyasha would catch the scent, seeing as he made sure to confront Kikyo when the pup was not far away. His anguish would be just another benefit, knowing he was so near, yet was powerless to stop the inevitable. It did not take long before he heard the rushed steps, "It took you long enough, Inuyasha. What a shame that Kikyo did not get to see you before she died."
"W-what did you say?" he gasped out in shock, then followed Naraku's gaze to the broken bow on the ground at his feet.
"She spoke your name as she fell," he informed cruelly, "and yet, you did not come." Taking advantage of his state of shock, he ascended inside his barrier, preparing to disappear once again. "She died alone, Inuyasha, all because you could not save her."
Inuyasha realized Naraku was vanishing and swiftly struck with Tessaiga, but Naraku had already gone. A sick laugh drifted on the wind in response to the futile attempt before falling completely silent, leaving the boy to collapse on the edge of the cliff and mourn for the fallen priestess, "I failed you again Kikyo, I let you die. I wasn't there for you and you died alone," he spoke to the broken half of the bow in his hand. "Kikyo, forgive me!"
The rest of them closed the distance and Kagome was the first to notice the reason Inuyasha laid crouched on the ground: a broken bow, Kikyo's bow. She gasped audibly, "Where's Kikyo? Did something happen to her?"
"Yeah, Naraku wasn't after me. He wanted Kikyo, he wanted to take her life," he told them solemnly as he rose to his feet.
'It can't be. Kikyo's gone? Naraku was still after her? But why?' she held back the threatening sadness, the tears of guilt and agony over failing to keep everyone safe, over having just been with the man who killed her best friend's love. 'I thought, I thought I had diverted his attention, just enough, but it seems, he's still the same, still trying to kill… everyone.' Her sadness morphed into a silent anger over his actions. 'I don't know what to do, there's got to be some way to get through to him.'
She stayed up all night, waiting for Inuyasha to return from his frantic search, and that was when she came to a shocking realization, 'If Kikyo is dead, why do I still feel her. I still feel that odd tug on my soul.' She gasped out loud understanding the only possibility. 'That could only mean that she's still alive! I have to tell Inuyasha,' she stood with determination, 'but wait, if news got out, Naraku would surely come after her again.' She sat back down, thinking on which would be best for everyone, noticing the sun was about to come up. 'It's morning already. Inuyasha, how far did you go in search of Kikyo?' His footsteps brought her out of her thoughts and she stood right away. "Inuyasha?"
"Kagome, did you wait up all night for me?" he asked just as quietly, just as somberly.
"I-" she held her tongue, 'You couldn't find Kikyo, could you? I want to ask, but-'
"I just thought that I'd be able to, find her remains at least," he was barely able to choke out.
'I want to tell him; I can't stand to see him in such pain. I want to make him feel better, but if I do, then she really would die,' she battled within herself, seeking some clue as to what to do.
"I'm sorry, Kagome. I'm, okay now," he lied and wore the same blank mask his brother did, but with undertones of extreme sadness.
'You don't look fine, Inuyasha,' Kagome thought with extreme resignation, knowing that for now, it was her secret to keep, 'I'm sorry, Inuyasha, but I can't say anything. Please forgive me.'
(A/N: The reason I altered the events of this chapter, was to make it seem more realistic for the pairing. If Naraku had just killed Kikyo, I doubt Kagome would have been so willing in the last chapter.)
(A/N: Spoiler Alert! Episodes 124-125)
The instant she heard about Kikyo being alive, she told Inuyasha to go, knowing that she was, in fact, alive and may need his help, but during the same time, Naraku's incarnation kidnapped her. First thing she learned was how the priest who told them about Kikyo was being controlled by Kagura, 'Then the story about Kikyo being alive was a lie; that means Naraku doesn't know. That will keep her safe for a little bit longer.' But why did this incarnation kidnap her, why not Naraku himself, something wasn't right about this, it didn't feel like Naraku's doing. 'Is this creepy infant acting on his own accord?'
"Kagome, I will make good use of your eyes," the infant made her stomach lurch in avulsion. "Kagura, untie her." She did and then held her still by her shoulders as the infant was lowered onto Kagome's chest. She knew somehow that she had to avoid touching him, but couldn't get away. The instant the infant gripped onto her shirt, she felt him digging around in her soul, a horrible feeling, pulling at her emotions and memories, looking for something.
"I found it, I found the darkness in your heart, and it's quite an amusing piece of information too," the infant cooed in that unnatural voice.
'Naraku, why, why did you have to kill Kikyo? Why couldn't you have just stayed focused on me?' all her doubts about him suddenly came flooding to the surface. 'I love you, but I don't know if you feel anything for me, or if you are just using me. I can't be with someone who will hurt my friends, but I can't be without you either. You tear me in half. Will you ever love me?' Her mind continued to spiral out of her control, dwelling on all her uncertainties and fears, as the infant commanded the next stage.
"Silly girl, he will never love you," Akago taunted, much to Kagura's boredom, thinking the "he" being referred to was Inuyasha. "Kagura, implant the jewel shard before she slips away from my grasp. Wait, she's a stubborn one." He dug back into her heart, speaking through the link and aiming to dishearten her determination, to crush her hopes, "How pathetic, you actually think Naraku will completely change who he is just for you. He's not even capable of love in the first place, only revenge, lust, and anger. He would not even care if you were to die."
"You got her," Kagura said as she tried to touch the black jewel that had been left at their disposal into Kagome's flesh, but before it could touch her, the amulet triggered, repelling both the infant and the shard.
"Hmm, I never expected this," the infant spoke. Both incarnations detected the power signature immediately. 'He doesn't want me to use her to find the jewel shards.'
The surge surprised Kagura, never expecting Naraku to protect her, 'He must have his own plans in mind.'
With Akago's control over her soul shattered, Kagome was able to contemplate what was going on again, 'Naraku, you protected me?' She was sure now, the infant was not acting on Naraku's orders, but his own accord. "You-you're wrong. I don't expect him to change; I don't want him to change. Even after all he's done, all the pain he's caused, he's still the one I dream of. And he protected me, just now, that must mean something, even if it isn't love. I know I could never live without him, if forced to choose. All this, I know what it means, it means I'm in love with Naraku!"
Her declaration, Kagura looked on, completely shocked as the priestess confessed her affections. 'It can't be, has Naraku actually decided to keep her? I wonder if he has grown an attachment to her? Perhaps, I can use this to my advantage,' she thought to herself just in time for Inuyasha to burst into the room.
"Now I see, what Naraku thinks of that girl," Kagura spoke, putting the pieces together.
"What did you do to Kagome?" Inuyasha growled as Kagome collapsed; lying limp and exhausted in his arms. He missed her vocal declaration by mere seconds.
"I just rummaged around in her soul a little bit. I was able to find a tiny speck of darkness in that girl's heart," the infant cooed cryptically.
"Are you Naraku's human heart?" Miroku questioned as they landed and explained his reasoning for thinking such.
"This is his human heart? The underhanded ways Naraku toys with peoples emotions, its absolutely sick!" Inuyasha shouted back.
"You don't know the half of it," the infant half-laughed. "It is possible I am the human heart, however, there are apparently many feelings that I did not inherit." 'Such as whatever he intends for this girl.' "I can't wait to see how Naraku's going to use that girl."
That was enough to incite Inuyasha to attack, but the Windscar did nothing but backfire again, giving the infant plenty of room to escape in a barrier. Still, he could not resist tormenting the people below, "Now that the priestess Kikyo is no longer with us, that girl is the only one who can see the sacred jewel shards. Soon, her eyes will become ours."
"Are you crazy? There is no way on earth Kagome would ever do anything to help Naraku," Inuyasha defended what he thought was obvious.
'He really has no idea, does he?' Kagura thought silently.
"Heh, there are many ways to corrupt that girl, Inuyasha. It would seem, Naraku has already begun the process," Akago foretold, but without giving away too much and angering the only being that could harm him.
(A/N: I finished writing this, so proud of myself. Just got to edit a chapter a week to make sure its ready and all to post. 47 chapters total.
One more week of class until a much needed break, finals, holidays, and being sick really takes a lot out of you.)
