It was barely dawn when Kagome sat straight up in bed. She looked around the room and was about to lay back down having convinced herself that it was nothing when she felt it again. She reached over and roused InuYasha with a hand on his shoulder.
‘InuYasha, do you feel that?’
He was awake in an instant at the feeling of her apprehension and her words. He gave himself a moment, searching with all his senses. ‘I don’t feel anything but there is some sort of commotion down on the street and smoke, and dead youkai.'
‘I think something is trying to get through the wards.’
Neither of them needed to say anything more as they both got up and quickly pulled on their clothing. Once they were dressed InuYasha picked up the cradle and Kagome followed behind him as he carried it to Hisako’s room. She knocked for them both and it wasn’t more than a few seconds later that the door opened.
“We think there’s trouble,” InuYasha said.
“Say no more,” Hisako told them as she took the babies from him. “Go do what you have to.”
Kagome led the way towards front door, stopping in the genkan to put on her sandals and grab her bow and quiver. “I’m going to do what I can to reinforce the wards.”
He nodded. “I’m gonna see what’s going on outside the grounds. I’ll probably do a full circle around the shrine.”
“Be careful,” she said quietly.
He slipped his hand around behind her neck and kissed her tenderly before pressing his forehead against hers. “You too.”
She nodded and followed him outside. He took off for the stairs and she headed for the honden where the wards that protected the shrine were anchored. From there she could get a better feel for what was happening and then strengthen them with her own power. She would also say a prayer or two for InuYasha and for anyone who might be caught up in whatever was going on off the grounds.
She entered the sacred space. The sutra that had been carved into the boards in the center of the room that were the foundation for the warding laid over the grounds were glowing with the generations of power that had been invested in them. She placed herself in the center of them all and then reached outwards with her power. As always it was a bit disorienting at first being connected to the sheer amount of power spread so wide and she took several long slow breaths to center herself.
She closed her eyes and let herself see with her her power as it flowed along the spherically shaped net that protected the grounds. It didn’t take her long to realize that there were perhaps a dozen lesser youkai testing the wards at any one time. When one was finally destroyed another would appear in a different place. They were clearly looking for any weak spots that could be used to get in or perhaps even forced open wider.
She did her own search which was much easier being that she was connected at the anchor point. Her reiki swept across every single centimeter and didn’t find even the smallest weak point, even still she was going to reinforce them as much as she could just to be safe, and she was going to see if there wasn’t a way to make them even stronger.
‘InuYasha, I want to try something. I need you to come back and join me in the honden.’
‘You sure? There’s a bunch of lesser youkai out here. I’ve been watching ‘em. They are systematically testing the ward for weak spots.’
‘We can go out after and clear them out. I finished my check and there aren’t any weak spots to exploit. I have an idea as to how to make them even stronger and I need you here so that I can try it.’
“Okay, I’ll be right there,’ he told her.
She smiled a little to herself. To him it really didn’t matter why she needed him only that she did. ‘I might look a little… out of it, since I’m not going to let go of my connection with the wards. Just come stand with me.’
‘Got it,’ he said. ‘Almost here now.’
InuYasha entered the honden and saw his beautiful mate a wash in the glow of her power. Her hands were held out at her sides and her head thrown back. He could actually see layer upon layer of power as it stood out above the sutra carved into the floor. How many different Higurashi miko and priests had poured their protection into the spells that were laid over these grounds? The weight of their intentions was oppressive as he approached her, but he didn’t hesitate to step right into the wall of reiki. Kagome would never have asked him to join her if it might end up with him injured or worse, purified.
It was the strangest feeling as he was wrapped in unfamiliar power, which could have purified a thousand youkai and yet seemed only to take measure of him. Suddenly the pressure eased and he supposed that meant that he hadn’t been found wanting or at the very least that his intentions were honorable. He stood behind Kagome stepped into her. As her power wrapped around him he got the feeling that she wanted him to position himself exactly as she was and to join their hands, so he did, sliding his fingers between hers, his palms pressed against the back of her hands.
Had it not been for her softening the effect he was certain he would have been staggered as he connected with the great power of her family. ‘Holy shit. This is fucking incredible. I can feel you dampening it for me and it’s still almost too much. How the hell can you stand it?”
‘Practice. I had to come in here everyday for nearly three months before it stopped knocking me out and then another three before I could keep from throwing up after, and it was years before I could spend more than a few minutes like this.’
‘So what are we doing?’
‘We are going to try and add another layer of protection, this one invested with youki,’ she told him. ‘If it works then you should be able to feel it if something is trying to get onto the grounds just like I can.’
‘You think that will really work? I’ve never even heard of anything like that being done.’
‘We’d never heard of a miko that could heal a youkai before or one that mated with a hanyou before either, but here we are.’ She could feel his amusement and his acceptance of her undeniable truth. ‘If you can carry a part of my reiki inside you and I can carry a part of your youki inside me then there is no reason they can’t work together on a larger scale to protect our home and our family.’
‘Just tell me what to do.’
‘I’m going to tap into your youki. All you have to do is let it happen. I do want to warn you though that it could take a lot out of you to do this and for a while we’re probably going to have to come out here and keep adding more youki since it hasn’t already been built upon for generations.’
“Whatever it takes.”
“Okay then, here we go my mate.”
Kagome could feel his love for her and his faith in her and there was no resistance from him at all as she coaxed his youki into a tightly wrapped coil around a tendril of her own power. She could see it in her minds eyes as she wove it around and through the webbing that had protected the shrine for centuries. Unfamiliar sutra flashed in her her mind and she could feel it as they were burned into the boards forming a second ring around those that were already there. She’d been certain they could do it, but it was always nice being proved right.
She was about to draw back and ease free of the connection when she felt InuYasha’s youki drawing her reiki along with it. It took a moment for her to realize what it was doing but once she did, she couldn’t help but be impressed. He was creating a conduit that would allow other trusted youkai to contribute their power to the wards and then further empowering the komainu not only to absorb reiki and youki as they stood sentinel but to animate in spirit and defend the shrine if needed.
Once it was done she was feeling drained and could tell that he was as well, the good news was that it had worked and the lesser youkai were no longer attacking having realized too late that they would no longer get so many warnings before the wards actively ended the threat they presented. She slowly drew their combined power back and severed their connection to the anchor.
“I need a nap,” InuYasha said.
She laughed a little. “Me too, but we did it, and it seems that I wasn’t the only one inspired to create something new from the blending of reiki and youki.”
“Keh, I wasn’t even sure it would work, but I figured what the hell,” he said. “Anyone who comes looking for trouble here now is gonna be in for a hell of a surprise too.”
“That’s definitely true,” she agreed. “Though I’m not looking forward to hearing from my detractors how I’ve desecrated the shrine or something by altering the wards and adding youki to them.”
He snorted. “Fuck ‘em.”
“And here I thought I was only supposed to fuck you,” she teased.
He rolled his eyes as he laid his cheek on the top of her head. “You know what I meant. Now, let’s get back inside before we both pass out right here. You’re just as drained from that as I am, and since I can feel that the wards aren't being tested anymore we should rest while we can.”
She nodded and they headed back into the house. Hisako was in the kitchen just finishing up preparing a light breakfast, the twins asleep in their cradle. She began to set the dishes on the table.
“Breastfast,” the youkai woman said.
“Oh, thank you HIsako-san, but I think we’re just going to go lie down,” Kagome tried.
“Is that right?” Hisako asked. “I think not. You two are going to sit and eat and then you can take a nap. InuYasha-sama will recover his youki that much faster on a full stomach and I don’t doubt it’s the same for you. So sit.”
InuYasha chucked as he pulled out a chair for Kagome. “No use arguing with her, trust me on this, and besides she’s right.”
She sat down and even though she was tired she had to admit the food smelled good and her stomach rumbled its agreement. As she started to eat she found herself thinking that she was glad that Hisako clearly was going to be more of a grandmother type than an actual servant, which was a relief. The meal was a bit heartier than she was used to having in the mornings but it was very good and it wasn’t long before she realized that her energy was coming back faster than it ever had before. She could also feel that InuYasha’s youki was nearly restored as well and wondered if her own recovery was another perk of their mating.
“Thank you, Hisako-san,” Kagome offered. “You were right.”
“Hmm, you could learn a thing or two from her,” Hisako said to InuYasha. “You see how she did that without grumbling about bossy old women who think they know everything?”
He snorted. “You saying it isn’t true though? And besides when’s the last time I said anything like that?”
“Not all, merely that your delivery was always lacking,” Hisako told him as she cleared the table. “And I would wager the last time was shortly after Sesshomaru-sama attempted to interfere with your personal life.”
“Oh, is she talking about when you couldn’t get it up because you realized you only wanted to be with me?” Kagome asked with a grin that was far too cheeky.
Hisako laughed. “Ah, so that is why Yura could not answer when asked what had her in such a state. Worry not, I am sure you are not the first to have issued such a command.”
InuYasha stood up. “I really dislike you both right now. I’m going to go call Sesshomaru and tell him about this morning, since it will be more enjoyable than continuing this conversation.”
Kagome giggled as InuYasha left. She could feel that he wasn’t really all that upset, just mildly irritated, even so if they weren’t going to take a nap together, maybe she could go apologize. Plus it might be fun to see how long he could manage to stay on the phone with her distracting him. She pushed away from the table and came to her feet. The twins were still asleep so it really was the perfect time.
“Do you mind keeping an eye on them a little longer?” Kagome asked. “I sense a bruised ego in need of soothing.”
“Not at all,” Hisako assured her.
She found in him in her office on the phone. She could hear Sesshomaru saying something about coming by and imparting some of his youki into the wards on the speakerphone. He made a point of not even glancing in her direction as he spoke to his brother, but that was fine by her and it helped her decide to go right for the kill. She went to her knees and crawled over to him. As she tugged open his pants he lost his train of thought momentarily and was forced to ask Sesshomaru to repeat himself. It was only through a great effort that she managed not to giggle.
InuYasha bit through his lip with his fangs as Kagome wasted no time engulfing him in her hot, wet mouth. It was without conscious thought that this hand came to rest in her hair, smoothing it as she teased the tip of him with her tongue.
“Shit!” he cried as she deep throated him suddenly.
“Is there a problem?” Sesshomaru asked.
InuYasha bit back a groan. “Uh, fuck, no, no problem. Fuck. I gotta go. Gods. I’ll call you back.”
“Hn,” Sesshomaru said. “Can you not tell your miko to wait until we have finished speaking? I am a busy man.”
“Nope,” InuYasha replied and then he ended the call.
Kagome met his eyes the corners of her mouth up turned around him. ‘You could have continued you call.’
“Yeah, right,” he said with a groan. ‘Gods woman, I fucking love your mouth.’
Now that she had his full attention she concentrated on bringing him to his end. She sucked him hard, drawing him in deeply as she worked him with her hand. His fingered tightened in her hair and she knew he was close so she slipped her free hand upwards under his shirt and dragged her nails down across his chest. He breathed out her name as he spilled himself.
She kept her eyes on his as she ran her tongue across his head, and he pulled her up into his lap with a growl. “Am I forgiven for teasing you now?”
“Keh, you know I wasn’t really mad,” he said and then he smirked. “But if I had been I wouldn’t be anymore.”
She laughed. “Well, at least now I know how to get back into your good graces if I ever do make you mad at me. Do you need to call your brother back now?”
“Nah,” he replied. “He’s coming by soon anyway to reinforce the wards so if there’s anything else we need to talk about we can do it then. Now, by my count I owe you one so I’m gonna need you be bend over the desk for me and let me even things up.”
She shivered a little and all but jumped to her feet so that she could get herself into position for his payback, not even caring a little as he laughed both out loud and in her head because she knew he loved how eager she was to be with him. As if she could ever be anything less when it came to being with him.
She closed her eyes as he ran his hands up the back of her thighs lifting her skirt with it. His claws made her skin tingle. She would never stop being amazed by how a part of him that was so deadly could be used to bring such pleasure and would always be thankful for it. Even when he was rough he was tender and she knew how rare that was.
“Damn him,” InuYasha said. “He’s so busy but he knew damn well what we were doing and suddenly he can come right over.”
Kagome sighed and straightened up. Just as he had, she’d felt his brother arrive. Her body was warm and aching for him to finish what he’d started. She turned and circled his neck with her arms before lifting herself up onto her toes and giving him a soft kiss. “The twins will be up soon and wanting to eat anyway and we can always pick this back up after he leaves. He’s probably just jealous.”
He chuckled. “If he’s not he would be if he knew just how amazing and insatiable my mate is. And we are definitely picking this back up as soon as we can. Now let’s go see what fluffy oji-sama, has to say that couldn’t wait until this afternoon like we talked about.”
