Chapter 32: Life in Drabbles
(A/N: So happy that finals are over and I still have my 4.0! Was a little worried about one class, but it pulled through. One more term and I'll be done with my certification. Woot!
It's a good thing I got a lot of material piled up for you guys, because since finishing writing this story, my motivation has vanished without a trace. Its probably going to be a while until I write anything new, but I'll continue updating this story weekly. My other one, may run out of steam and take a hiatus though.)
Over the next few months, Naraku would continue to visit Kagome between his pursuit of the jewel and power, but it would usually only be brief, rushed, and never, never enough time. A few manipulated hours only left him scheming how he could get her alone the next time, unsatisfied and experiencing urges he scarcely understood. Was it something about her being a priestess, or was it an ailment on his side that was causing this? He'd never had a problem with using and leaving wenches before, but she commanded his attention without even trying. It was part of the reason, a bonus, behind giving Akago control over finding the last shard, freeing him up to do as he wished. Sure, he still had a few matters to attend to; propositions to pose, deals to make, and threats to pitch, but they were not all-consuming of his time. He looked down at the object in his hand and decided that is was time to use it, before its "power" faded, and get Kagome alone for a longer chunk of time.
Kagome had been mad at him the first time he showed himself after "killing" Kikyo, and she let it be known, yet somehow, he always managed to divert her hostile emotions and get her body ever pliant to his desires. The only win she got from their complicated verbal exchanges was that he still had no idea that Kikyo was alive, and she intended to keep it that way. They were beginning to fall into a routine, he would come for her, call her to him with the pulsing and burning heat in her amulet strong enough to wake her from a dead sleep, if necessary. And she would creep out of camp or give some excuse, carrying nothing with her but the means to cleanse or cover his scent afterwards. Sometimes they would talk first, other times he would lapse into a frenzied state, pouncing on her the second she would come into view. And always, she could detect him trying to stall parting from her, waiting until the absolute last second. There were a few times when she was sure she was going to get found out, yet he always managed to disappear just in time. His visits were roughly a few times a week, but the last time had been well over a week ago, and she was starting to get concerned, where was he?
So deep in her thoughts, she didn't notice the approaching presence, complete with a very large Shikon jewel fragment, until Inuyasha jumped to his feet, sword drawn. The others followed suit, including Kagome, needing to keep up appearances, but the sight before her confused her to no end. Emerging from the tree line at the edge of the clearing, was Sesshomaru, but Kagome could clearly see the jewel at his right shoulder. 'Did he, did he kill Naraku?' her arrow knocked against her bow in her trembling grip.
"Hey Bastard, why the hell do you smell like Naraku?" Inuyasha grilled, his hackles raised.
"I recently had an altercation with that vermin, why else," he spoke evenly.
"Keh, he get away from you again. Not such a skilled hunter, are you?" the pup mocked, but let his ears flatten at the uncharacteristically harsh glare he received. He was not used to his brother using such expressive looks, he must have hit a sore spot.
"Miko, come," he commanded, and at the same time, her pendant pulsed, almost burning against her chest.
"W-why?" she asked, trying to keep her voice from cracking, still not sure what was going on. Sesshomaru really scared her, especially now when she wasn't sure the state he left Naraku in. It must have been a long battle if he smelled of him strong enough to make Inuyasha question him. 'Its odd that the pendant is reacting to him.'
"Rin is ill. I require the esteemed abilities of a skilled priestess to restore her health," the extreme complement was not missed, and she scrutinized his every word. His intense gaze fell on her without the slightest bit of scorn he had taken to directing at her.
'Sesshomaru hates me, why would he trust me with Rin, or call me skilled, praising my abilities that I know are not as great as say, Kaede's. And last, why would he look at me like, that, unless… that's not Sesshomaru! Duh, why didn't I figure it out sooner, of course, that's Naraku in disguise,' she smiled brightly and jogged happily to his side, despite Inuyasha's complaints.
"I shall return you when Rin's health has returned," he told her stoically, mimicking the demon lord's tone as they walked off, making sure his words would travel to the obstinate pup they left behind. He had to resist the urge to grope her behind, as humorous as that would have been to tarnish the Sesshomaru's reputation, it would have been a bit too out of character and might have given him away. He also was not in the mood to have Inuyasha bar his way, seeing as he could copy appearances, but not attacks.
Before long, he had gotten out of scent and hearing range and let the appearance drop, stretching a bit, relieved to be back in his own skin.
"How did you trick Inuyasha's nose?" Kagome asked when she noticed the change. He just smirked at her and handed her a piece of red and white cloth he had tucked into his haori. "Sesshomaru's sleeve," she said quietly. "Clever as always. So, where are we going anyways?"
His smirk grew before he answered, "My bed."
(A/N: So for the rest of this chapter, I have decided to do a series of drabbles purely for my own practice. It will be a different style than the rest of my writing so if you don't like it, don't worry, I'll revert back to my normal style for the rest of the story. This just seemed the most conducive scene to a drabble style and I wanted to try it out.
Most of these prompts were from a random word generator, unless otherwise specified, since my readers wouldn't give me prompts. *Stares pointedly at non-participants.*
Some of these mini-scenes have a vital point, others are just disjointed ideas that I worked into aimless conversation to be spoken and forgotten.)
Prompt 1: Momentary- brief, impending, or recurring.
It was already late in the day when Naraku impersonated Sesshomaru to retrieve Kagome, and after walking for a bit, he picked her up and flew her to his castle.
She had since fallen asleep in his arms.
Chest rising and falling gently, light puffs of air ghosting from her lips, radiating peace.
'How can she find such trust in someone like me?'
He wanted her awake, aware as he took her body once again, but with every momentary thought to rouse her from slumber, he hesitated, letting her linger in her serene state.
'There will be time for that.'
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 2: Disturbance- Commotion.
'A buzzing disturbance, maybe an alarm clock? Last I knew, I was still in the past. What is making that noise?' Kagome's eyes focused in the dark room, only a flicker of candlelight gave contrast.
Naraku was standing beside her, and from the height of her view, she could tell she had been lying on a bed. Her clothes were still on and he hadn't woken her. Pushing those thoughts aside, she focused on the sound's cause; Siamyosho, hovering before him.
Overcome by curiosity, her mouth worked faster than her mind, "Why do they obey you?"
"I absorbed their queen."
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 3: Absolution- to free of blame or guilt.
"Why did you absorb her?" she watched as he dismissed the insect.
"Are you disturbed by that?" he teased. "Would you rather I left her to send her drones after entire villages. You are aware that wasps are flesh-eaters, yes?"
She gulped, "It was probably for the best then."
"She broke her contract with me," his words absolving him of guilt. "I'm sure you have noticed in your travels with Inuyasha, how full demons do not take half demons seriously," he turned his heated, hungry gaze onto her, making his ruby eyes glow in the darkness. "But enough of that…"
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 4: Tongue-tied- unable to speak.
"I have waited long enough for you to awaken," he crouched over her, making her fall back over onto her back.
The proximity allowed her to notice he did not have all of his extensions, "Where'd your spikes and," she looked behind him, "tails go?"
"Those projections are unnecessary in this setting," he told her plainly as his lips ghosted over her tingling flesh.
"Yeah, I guess they might make it a little hard to fit through the door," she giggled.
"Precisely," he drowned her in a demanding kiss, finding this was the best method to keep her tongue, tied.
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 5: Burn- to cause or feel the sensation of heat or to feel strong emotion.
That burning sensation was back, the same one that would nearly consume his senses as he used her body for his desires, the one that tempted him to plunge his fangs into her throat and do more than just savor the crimson liquid pulsing through such delicate vessels. Focusing in on this urge, he tracked it through his system, seeking its root, its origin. He found his body was poised to inject her, infuse more than just his seed, but his toxins and his aura into her very skin. There had to be a purpose, but he didn't know what.
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 6: Convulsion- involuntary, violent contortion of the body.
He ignored the urge, forced it down, but in doing so, his peak was accompanied by his body being inexplicably wracked with painful convulsions, along with his typical, pleasurable tremors. It was enough to draw out a distressed vocalization, making Kagome swiftly panic for him and place her palm to his chest, frantically calling his name. Her touch eradicated the unpleasant sensation instantly, leaving him with just the pleasure of their coupling and the confusion of what was wrong with his body. It came from within and was encumbering enough to drive him to seek answers, 'What could've caused this?'
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 7: Heaving- to raise or lift with effort or force
"Do you think Sesshomaru retrieved Kagome simply for healing Rin?" Miroku posed to Sango.
"Pervert! Of course that's the only reason why," she responded in denial. "W-why else would he?"
"Well, he could have had other motives. Why, right now he and Kagome could be in the act of- Ouch, what was that for?" he rubbed the lump on his head.
"I don't need to hear about your perverted theories," she hefted Hiraikotsu back over her shoulder as they walked back into camp.
"What'd the monk do this time?" Inuyasha asked, noting Miroku's pained expression.
"Same as usual, perverted lecher."
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 8: Concede- to acknowledge, yield.
"What I don't understand is why would he want her to help the kid, and why she'd go with him to begin with. It's not like he's ever been nice to her or anything," Inuyasha ranted again, being a true broken record since Kagome left with "Sesshomaru."
Sango and Miroku only shared glances, knowing that Inuyasha would really go berserk if he found out about his brother and Kagome being on such "friendly" terms.
"You know Kagome," Shippo piped innocently, "she's always willing to help someone. Human, demon, half-demon, it makes no difference to her."
"Guess you're right," Inuyasha conceded.
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 9: Affliction- a state of pain, distress, or grief. Sickness.
Even after his brush with this newest "affliction," Naraku still found himself unable to resist repeating his actions with Kagome. The pain only intensified each round, as did the urge to follow through with this growing desire to inject her. But still, he resisted, not willing to let some unknown entity in his body dictate his actions.
Carefully unwinding her arms from his person, he left her to rest while he sought answers. 'Kanna,' he summoned from a different room and watched as she instantly materialized before him. "What is this affliction?"
"You have no illness. Those reactions are normal."
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 10: Correlation- relation between two or more things.
"Is this why you disappeared for longer than usual?" Kagome asked, meaning the obvious necessities in place to afford for human comforts and identifying the correlation in the additional time to prepare.
"I could not have you perishing on me. Humans are far more delicate than demons," Naraku watched as she ate the food set before her.
"Don't you ever need to eat?" she asked innocently.
"Yes, but not in the manner you are referring to."
"Huh?"
"Think back to what you saw in the depths of Mount Hakurei. What do you think those demons in the tunnels were for?"
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 11: Pragmatic- practical considerations.
There were aches everywhere; muscles protesting their strenuous activity, but it was all way more than worth it as she was still riding out the high from last night. The steamy water of the indoor hot spring melted away any discomforts she might have had with ease.
Speaking of comforts, this castle he had taken her to was obviously well run, yet he rarely left her side, so he couldn't be doing all these tasks, such as cooking and preparing the bath. There had to be servants somewhere, for pragmatic issues, but she hadn't seen any, "Naraku, I am curious…"
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 12: Fear- aversion, terror, fright.
"You speculate over the strangest things, Kagome," he chuckled at her. "A neighboring lord besieged this fortress, and I drove the invading army off. The previous lord and most of his army had been slain, but the servants had hidden out in the dungeon. I let them live here on their own accord in my absence."
"So they only take on the role of servants when you use this castle?" she assumed.
"Hn," he confirmed.
"But, why haven't I seen any of them?" they weren't invisible or anything.
Remembering the sight he presented that day, he smirked, "They fear me."
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 13: Betrayal- to be unfaithful.
"Where are your incarnations?" she asked casually as they walked through the castle grounds.
"Kanna is monitoring them. They are carrying out a task under the orders of Akago," he responded casually.
"That infant?" he nodded, clarifying. "He creeps me out."
"I have given him his own volition; he is not under my control," he explained.
"Why would you do that?"
"So he will be free to betray me," he told her cryptically.
"It sounds as if you are expecting him to go against you."
"I am."
"Wouldn't that be a setback?" she asked confusedly.
"Not if it is expected."
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 14: Deathtrap- situation where there is imminent risk of death.
As Kagome admired the gardens that the servants obviously kept up in Naraku's absence, Naraku let his mind track back to Kanna's words; "Your instincts call for her as a mate." He didn't want to believe it at first, but it wasn't such a bad idea. The only reason not to, would be that his enemies, namely Sesshomaru, would target her. He now understood the esoteric threat and knew many demons would lose themselves if forcefully divested of a mate. He had caused such agony himself, in the past, and very few survived the ordeal. 'It would be a deathtrap.'
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 15: Show- to cause or allow to be seen.
"Oh, did I tell you that Sesshomaru showed up a few weeks ago?" she asked, lying beside him in a post coital glow.
"No," he listened to her story easily, enjoying her company.
"Well, Miroku implied that I was with him, as I told you they assumed, and he actually gave a reaction to that. It was quite hilarious seeing the shock and disgust show in his eyes," she giggled.
"What did he say?" Naraku asked. 'That would have been quite the sight.'
She cleared her throat to speak in a lower octave in imitation, "Miko, you will fix this."
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 16: Alarming- causing alarm or fear.
"What if Sesshomaru confronts Inuyasha while I'm here? They will find out that I'm not actually healing Rin," she voiced her alarming realization. Her aura flowed wildly around her, in sync with her thoughts.
"They will simply assume you were kidnapped," he just couldn't help but to frighten her, just a little. There was just something irresistible about her flamboyant reactions.
"But, then they won't let me out of their sight again, and I won't be able to see you or get away when you call, and-"
"Calm yourself," Naraku interrupted her, "I have ensured that Sesshomaru is thoroughly preoccupied."
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 17: Atrocity- an act; shockingly wicked, cruel, or brutal.
"I know you don't like him, but Inuyasha is honorable, so do not go trying to smear his name," she crossed her arms to punctuate her point.
"Honorable, is that why he tried to slay you after being freed from Kikyo's arrow?" She froze in her response, shocked again by his flawless use of the truth. "You blindly believe what your companions say without even questioning their pasts'."
"But he was all disturbed when he lost control and slaughtered that group of bandits."
"Was he disturbed by the atrocity itself, or at the fact that he was caught in it?"
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 18: Addictive- a practice or habit that is compulsory.
He originally planned on keeping her in his bed and under him for as much time as her body could handle, thinking if he simply sated his desires for her he will be able to move on and discard her. One week should have been enough time.
He should have known better that it would not work when it was more than sexual gratification he sought from her; simply talking with her and watching the most mundane tasks was just as satisfying. It was vexing how he could find her so enthralling. Even now, watching her "study;" it was addictive.
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 19: Game- an amusement or pastime.
It was in no way a platonic visit, for he ravaged her nearly to her limits for the entire week, but she was certainly surprised that he spent so much time simply sitting near her and watching her. Always watching her. It was both flattering and spine tingling, especially when she would finally look up to see those burning red eyes locked on her. She wouldn't be surprised if he was turning this into some sort of game, seeing how long it would take her to come to him with just his gaze. It was a game he always won.
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 20: Gobbledygook (courtesy of my sister trying to stump me)- nonsensical speech; gibberish. (I was surprised it's actually a real word.)
She was growing very comfortable in his presence, not realizing she was becoming too comfortable, until she accidentally said something she shouldn't have. It was a simple slip, only changing the tense of a single word from past to present, but when referring to Kikyo, there was nothing he wouldn't catch.
"What did you just say?" his piercing gaze took on that formidable sheen.
Realizing her mistake, Kagome tried to backpedal, but only resulted in spewing gobbledygook, "I said you really shouldn't have killed Kikyo. Because she's obviously dead; no mistake about that. Yup, dead as a doornail; perished, deceased."
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 21: Deceit- concealment or distortion of the truth.
He wasn't fooled for a second, but looking at this logically, calling her out on the blatant lie would not accomplish anything. It would only raise her defenses or prompt her to send word to Kikyo to hide. No, he'd pretend to believe her, for now, all while silently looking for the elusive wench. Willing his features to soften, he spoke in a jovial manner, "You should be careful of how you words such things, Kagome. One might accuse you of deceitful workings." All the while, he couldn't figure out why she'd lie to him anyways. Didn't she hate Kikyo?
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 22: Tumultuous- marked by disturbance, highly agitated, disorderly.
'Where did he go?' Kagome wandered around the dark hallways, following the glow of Naraku's jewel shard. She fell asleep next to him, but when she reached for his warmth in the night, he was absent. Before long, she came to a doorway at the end of a hall and entered slowly. There was no candlelight, but she could clearly see Naraku sitting at the window, staring out at the moon. He looked troubled, and his tumultuous aura confirmed her suspicion. Settling down on her knees before him, she saw his eyes looking right past her, "Naraku, are you okay?"
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 23: Clairvoyant- power to see beyond normal sight; intuitive.
He ignored her words, his thoughts too loud, drowning her out, 'How could Kikyo still be alive? How many times do I have to kill her before she will just stay dead?' His thoughts spiraled out of control, not even noticing Kagome had entered the room until her gentle hands came to rest on the bare, pulsing scar on his back. It snapped him out of his stupor, but he wasn't sure how to feel.
Her clairvoyant intuition guided her touch; somehow she knew this was tied to whatever was wrong with him, and she sought to soothe his pangs.
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 24: Exclusive- shutting out all others, excluding admittance, right or privilege, unique.
She could feel his pulse slowing, the scalding fever retreating as she traced along the lines of his spider scar. His breathing evened out and she wrapped her arms around his shoulders, hugging him from behind.
Probably to break the silence or create a distraction, she asked him, "I've been wondering, why do always bite when… you know?"
He did not miss the opening in her question, asking not only about his tendency with her, but possibly with others, "Your blood is exclusive, I've never preferred the taste prior." 'Just as I've never allowed anyone to touch me like this.'
(A/N: 100 words)
Prompt 25: Virile- having or exhibiting masculine energy, forcefulness, or strength; relating to capability of procreation.
Despite his weird kinks and moodiness, she couldn't see herself with anyone else. Other guys she knew just felt too tame; only Naraku was virile enough to satisfy her darkest desires.
She kissed his back, moving over his shoulders, until she was crouched before him and letting her breath flutter across his jawbone.
His hands found their way to her hips, clothed in only a light, sleeping kimono that she'd been using during her stay, and easily pulled her into his lap, straddling him.
Maybe, it was okay that she could calm his mind; maybe, he needed this, needed her.
(A/N: 100 words)
(A/N: I enjoyed this little exercise, but that will be all the drabbles I write for now, I've gotten it out of my system. Let me know what you thought of it, please. I might write a story later on in just dabbles.)
