Warning: There will be lemons in this story, some non-con as well.
(A/N: Since I'll be busy all weekend, I decided to post this week's chapter early. Happy holidays!)
Chapter 33: Possession
(A/N: There is a chance that some of this might have a slight OOC, but in my opinion, any Naraku/Kagome fic is bound to have at least a little OOC. But that's the point isn't it, to change the characters just enough to twist the story around to our own liking? Anyone who dislikes OOC, you have been warned and I suggest you stick to the author's original work. :P
That being said, I'm drawing from some of the emotions Naraku displays glimpses of in the end of the final act episode. I'm still keeping him IC as possible, but towards Kagome, he might act a little softer or irrational. This will only escalate, but slowly and in a coherent way, as these last chapters play out.)
Mount Hakurei collapsed a couple of months ago, and he had been paying her body frequent visits, including during times that she smelled plenty ripe, fertile, and bountiful. Her power was no longer able to overpower his and his essence remained even after her powerful, euphoric surges, however, it had not taken hold. It was a mystery that plagued his mind. He knew the problem did not lay with him, so it must be something on her end, "Are you barren?"
"Huh?" she wondered what brought this on. Was he actually trying to get her pregnant?
"Why does your body refuse to take my seed," he clarified. He hadn't been aiming for such, but these things were inevitable, and it had him wondering.
"Oh," she realized what had him stumped, "I'm taking medicine to prevent pregnancy."
Her news inexplicably stung a bit. Why would she be so determinedly against the notion? Because she is human, weak of mind, body, and heart. Humans never fully accept demons, or half-demons. Either that, or she was still hung up on Inuyasha. He let a scowl mar his face, whichever her reason, he was sure he wouldn't like it. Not one to remain oblivious though, he asked what was on his mind, "Why does that possibility distress you? Do you not deem me suitable?" That had not been what he was intending to say, it just came out. She did that to him.
Kagome looked shocked, not realizing the insult he took until now, "That's not what I meant at all! In my e- where I'm from…" she corrected, then continued her explanation, "humans are not even considered fully grown until 18 years old, and many wait until their 20's before they settle down and start a family. I'm too young, is all."
"That makes no sense, why wait until middle age?" he tossed back.
"Because humans in my country can live till 80, 90, and some even top 100 years," she told him, proud of the advancements her society managed.
"Impossible, you lie," he could not believe her claim, that humans could live twice as long. How could that be?
"Its not a lie," she huffed. He detected no deceit, but it was still hard to believe. 50 was about as long as most lived here. What kind of land was she from?
"You refer to the land beyond the well," he assumed, causing her to stiffen in defense, knowing where this conversation was going, and still not wanting to tell him about it, but then relaxed. It was probably time to tell him the truth, but where to begin.
"Y-yes," she started. "The well, is a portal of sorts, which I'm sure you've already figured that much out, but where it leads, is both far and near." He noticed how she always referred to her home using different vague terms, country, land, area, oftentimes stuttering, like she was changing her words last second; it was obvious that this was a closely guarded secret, so he listened patiently. "It might be hard to believe, but I'm…" she poked her fingers together nervously, "I'm from the future; this land, but how it will be in 500 years."
"Your well transcends time?" his eyes widened at her incredulous confession. Everything suddenly made perfect sense, her strange manner, the jewel having been in her body, her naiveté in this world, and her foolhardy trust in him. He let a digit wrap around a strand of her hair, looking at it appraisingly, like it was a scroll with her soul scrawled across it. "You truly are unique."
"You believe me? I was expecting to have to prove it or something," she giggled and leaned into his strong frame as he carried her back towards her companions. One week had passed far too quickly, and his distractions for Sesshomaru had run out. The clever dog found out all too soon that he was being led around by the nose.
"You will have to tell me more about this future at a later time," he held her tighter for the last few moments before setting down. "They are near." She nodded, understanding they would have to put on an act shortly.
(A/N: Spoiler Alert! Episode 137-140)
Just as she expected, all that waited for her back with Inuyasha was a ton of questions she didn't want to answer, ranging from the harsh accusations from Inuyasha to the perverted nuances from Miroku. Even Sango was joining in on ganging up on her, trying to get information. Shippo was just happy she was back and safe, that was all he was concerned about, luckily.
"Oh, Kagome," Shippo changed the subject, "A guy named Akitoki Hojo is in Kaede's hut. He has some mission that he needs help to complete and we were waiting until you returned until we set out."
"Is that so?" she answered, ignoring all the prying questions still floating around. "Then lets get going!" 'Thank you Shippo, you saved me, and you don't even know it.'
Akitoki had half of a dreaded demon blade in his possession, and it was powerful enough to possess Inuyasha just by being pulled from its wrappings. What would happen if a full demon, such as this Hoshiyomi that was after it, got ahold of it? She had seen Sesshomaru overcome a demon sword before, Tokijin, that also had the ability to possess it wielder, but could Hoshiyomi do the same, and what would he do if he did overcome the Naginata of Kenkon? She soon found out, when he had her laid out on an offering table and began ranting about how humans were traitorous beings. The first thing she saw was just how sad his eyes looked; what could have happened to make him look like that?
"Young lady, explain something. Why is a human like you, traveling with that half demon?" he was referring to Inuyasha. "What are you to him?"
"Why do you ask me that; because its none of your business," she turned her head away standoffishly.
"Humans and demons have no love for each other; there can never be a lasting bond between humans and demons," Hoshiyomi may have been referring to Inuyasha, but Kagome's mind went straight to Naraku. She was not willing to believe what this demon was telling her. "That is because humans always end up betraying demons. You too will betray that half demon."
Inuyasha or Naraku, his words skirted her truth. Being with Naraku, was it betraying Inuyasha? Her mind remained rooted in denial, refusing to give up either one, firmly believing she could establish peace, "No, that'll never happen."
"Humans are weak creatures; they are weak in body and soul. Even though they are weak they try to live proudly, that's why humans betray, in order to protect themselves," he continued his rant.
"You obviously don't understand humans," she snapped back defensively, before gasping at her realization. "Do you have something against humans? That must be it, that's why you can say things like that." Her time with Naraku paid off, she was learning to look deeper, into a person's reasoning and not just taking their words for face value. But what was the story with this demon, why did he have such a sad grudge against humans? His gaze fell on a painting of a female warrior priestess, one much like Midoriko, and understanding dawned, he had been in love with her! "Who is that?"
"Tsukiyomi. I was sealed in here by Tsukiyomi, and the Blade of Kenkon was split," he turned his back, and that's when Kagome heard the pain in his voice, a pain she too had been familiar with, heartache. "Tsukiyomi betrayed me; she had promised to live with me."
"I'm sure she had a reason for what she did?" Kagome defended the woman. She just had a feeling that what she said was correct, but he just laughed at her.
"Humans are weak, and because of that they struggle and betray others in order to survive," the pain was buried once again, and his mantra resurfaced. "And so I desire to save humans from that fate, by death. I knew when I first saw you; you possess a power similar in strength to Tsukiyomi. I am going to use your spiritual power in the ritual to restore the Naginata of Kenkon."
Fighting their way through the demon ninjas, it ended up being Miroku's wind tunnel that obliterated the henchmen ninjas, freeing Kagome's companions to come to her rescue. Absorbing four powerful demons at once did not go unnoticed by Naraku as their demonic aura was transferred to his body in bursts. If Miroku was fighting, and absorbing demons this powerful, what state was Kagome in? Her trinket would keep her safe, erecting a barrier if needed, but he couldn't help but concern himself over what she was doing. He set out to her; just to make sure she was unharmed.
Kagome awoke in the arms of Hoshiyomi and the first thing she saw was the frightful look on his face, so unlike his melancholy expression from earlier. It reminded her of when Inuyasha's demon blood would take over, like he was possessed by power. That's right, the Naginata of Kenkon, it must have possessed him, lured him into its grasp with the promise of power, or maybe, with the promise of alleviating his sadness. Tsukiyomi borrowed Kagome's body as a medium to converse with Hoshiyomi; Kagome allowed the exchange without the slightest bit of hesitation. The sadness and regret flowing through her, it needed to find a way out; she needed to help these two express their words and find peace.
Tsukiyomi pulled the Naginata out of Hoshiyomi's grasp, returning him to himself; without the corrupt object of power, the link was severed.
"Hoshiyomi," Tsukiyomi's voice came from Kagome's body, enveloped in the light of Tsukiyomi, "we are finally able to meet once again."
Hoshiyomi glared at the specter of the woman who betrayed him, "Tsukiyomi, what do you want with me now?"
"I wanted you to think back, and remember something, the feelings you once felt for humans like me, the kindness you showed me, and the many days we spent together," she then used the Naginata to project the vision of what she spoke. A scene of the two of them fighting off a pack of demons together, back to back. A memory of the solution he came to in order to defend her, having a powerful blade forged by Kaijinbo, the Naginata of Kenkon.
"That's right, I had the blade forged, so that I could find a place for us to live in peace, with no fighting. I did it all for you, Tsukiyomi. Why did you have to betray me?" he screamed, still not understanding why this would drive her to turn against him. What did he do to deserve her betrayal?
Last, the vision of Hoshiyomi using the blade, it was powerful, just as he expected, and destroyed his foes with ease, but in return, it was slowly eating away at his soul. Tsukiyomi saw this, saw the terrible aura that surrounded the blade, and bid him to get rid of it, but he did not listen, driving her to go to extreme measures and seal him away in order to discard the blade herself. A feat, she did not survive, and never got to explain her actions to the one she loved. It was tragic, and Kagome could feel every last ounce of the couple's agony. It was a story that gave her a terribly foreboding sensation; she felt as if it was trying to tell her something about herself, and Naraku.
"Th-that's ridiculous," Hoshiyomi faltered at her retelling of the events. After hurting for so long, he hesitated giving her free run of his heart again, for fear that it would break even harder. "Are you telling me, the truth?" Each word was a struggle.
"I wanted to save you; release you from the spell of the Naginata of Kenkon. That's why I did it," her words resounded in his mind, drawing a conclusion foreign to his mantra.
'Was it all because of my own weakness? Was it because my heart did not have faith in Tsukiyomi, that this darkness was born?' he questioned himself.
"Hoshiyomi, my body may no longer exist, but my feelings for you will remain for all eternity. I leave behind no regrets in my passing," she told him.
"Ridiculous, ridiculous!" he outburst and reclaimed his weapon as it beckoned. "Its too late, its all far too late. The Naginata of Kenkon has finally been returned to this world, and it thirsts for blood even now." The voice was not his own, but the blade itself taking advantage of his moment of indecisiveness, trapping him in its grip once again. His strike severed Tsukiyomi's link with Kagome, but did not strike the girl as her amulet fired in defense.
Kagome was subconsciously aware of everything that was happening as she slowly regained consciousness. Inuyasha set her on her feet after catching her and she interrupted Hoshiyomi's rant with her own, professing how Tsukiyomi gave her life to save his, and how even though she was human, she was not weak; her heart was much stronger than his, "You're the one who betrayed yourself, Hoshiyomi! You became bewitched by the Naginata of Kenkon's terrible power, because your own heart was weak." The blade responded, and compelled him to lash out, not wanting him to realize the truth, and the battle resumed. They were getting nowhere; none of their attacks had any effect on the cursed blade. Even Akitoki tried to overpower the demon, to no avail. As Kagome lay knocked to the ground, she said a little prayer to her arrow, "Help me out here, Tsukiyomi." She had projected herself once; maybe she could do it again. Kagome rose, but out of her mouth came two voices, her's, and Tsukiyomi's, "Stop, Hoshiyomi!" Her arrow flew, imbued with both powers, halting his moves in time for Inuyasha to make it to her side and combine his backlash wave with another arrow, and shattering the blade.
In his last moment, before the wave consumed his body along with the double sided blade, the hold was broken and he could think clearly again. "Its better this way; this is for the best, right, Tsukiyomi?" he muttered with a smile, finally understanding her last action.
"He's me," Inuyasha let them see inside his heart for a brief moment. "He was exactly the same way I used to be. There was a time I was completely possessed by my own demonic power, and I couldn't even control myself. Keh, its exactly the same."
'So I was right,' Kagome thought to herself.
"Well, its lucky for you that you had Kagome," Miroku pointed out. "She embraced you with kindness, and saved you."
Even with the battle concluded, and the couple having found peace, Kagome couldn't shake the feeling, 'I still have a bad feeling about this.'
(A/N: I am aware this chapter was a bit rushed. If you want a play by play in detail, watch the episodes. The point of adding this scene in should be obvious, but if it isn't, it will be soon.
Next week's chapter will begin explaining the purpose of this, and along with chapter 35, will be a pivotal point in the story.)
