As good a hunter as InuYasha was, he wasn’t surprised that he hadn’t been able to pick up the trail of the the girl or the youkai who had carried her away. Not only did the little void or whatever the hell she was have no scent and no aura to speak of but they had also flown off, the scent of the woman dissipated by the wind until there was nothing left to follow. He was a little frustrated of course, but he certainly didn’t blame Kagome for stopping him from going after them considering the state he’d been in.
Deciding to give up and go home so that at least he could be there to help protect her and their little ones, he pulled out his phone. Sesshomaru would definitely want the details of what happened and he needed to be made aware of the strange new type of youkai they’d encountered. He also didn’t know what that mirror of hers might do to his brother. The last thing they needed was for him to end up going on some kind of rampage in his youkai form.
“I am busy,” Sesshomaru answered.
“Keh, like I’d call you if it wasn’t important,” InuYasha replied. “We were just attacked at the shrine.”
There was a long pause. “I will assume that you are all well given your rational state of mind, so instead will ask what happened.”
InuYasha couldn’t help but to smile a little. Sesshomaru might not have said it or even asked but he knew that had been his brother’s way of acknowledging his concern for their safety. “There was some freaky little girl, had to be a youkai, but not like any I’ve ever come across. She was dressed all in white with white hair and black eyes and had this mirror with her. She had no scent, no detectable youki, nothing. If I hadn’t seen her with my own eyes I would have sworn she wasn’t there.”
“Interesting,” Sesshomaru said. “Undetectable to your senses, save for your sight… This must be how she was able to penetrate the wards. Go on.”
“Anyway, her mirror apparently she can use it to draw out your soul,” InuYasha continued. “She got Kagome first and when I sensed she was in trouble she got mine too, leaving only the youkai. Luckily Kagome was able to fight it somehow and shot an arrow into the mirror, which had reflected my attacks back on me but couldn’t reflect hers. Once she realized she had failed she took off with another youkai. This one was female, a wind youkai of some sort and her scent was in the place where I found Kagome.”
“Then was your transformation reversed once your soul was released by your miko’s arrow?” Sesshomaru asked.
“No, but the youkai recognized Kagome and knew to protect her and our pups,” InuYasha said. “He tried to give chase but Kagome stopped me and she’s the one who brought me back. I tried to pick up their trail but there wasn’t one I could find.”
“Disappointing to have lost such a lead, but better that you did not leave the grounds in that unpredictable state,” Sesshomaru told him.
“Yeah,” InuYasha agreed. “Recognizing Kagome and my own pups is one thing, but who knows what he might have done when he went after them, if he even would have cared about collateral damage in his hunt.”
“Was there any more?” Sesshomaru asked.
“Nah, that’s it for now,” InuYasha replied. “I just thought you should definitely know this bastard has some new tricks we haven’t seen before so you can get the word out. I don’t know what that mirror would do to you, but it would definitely reflect any youki based attacks you might try. Kagome doesn’t think he’ll send her back since the mirror doesn’t work on her and since it only makes me more dangerous.”
“Never the less, with your permission I will assign a detail to the shrine,” Sesshomaru said. “I will make sure you are familiar with whoever I send and they will remain outside of the wards unless they are needed.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he agreed with a sigh. “It’s probably for the best, but I would suggest covert surveillance. It might give us the best chance of catching someone watching the shrine so that we can follow them to that bastard Naraku.”
“I concur,” Sesshomaru said. “Further… You know I did not mean to imply that you cannot protect them yourself.”
“Keh, I know,” InuYasha assured him. “But it isn’t worth taking any chances.”
“Hn, I think being mated suits you,” Sesshomaru said. “I have already begun making the necessary arrangements for the mediation. I will call you when the details have been finalized. Make sure she knows what to expect.”
InuYasha rolled his eyes as the call cut of, but he was used to how abrupt Sesshomaru could be. He put his phone away and made his way back to the shrine. He could feel Kagome’s apprehension in spite of his own lack of alarm so he reached for her, letting his mind brush more firmly against hers to let her know he was on his way back to her. He had to admit she was probably a lot calmer than he would have been if their situations were reversed.
The youkai wanted them to see to it that she was never the one out fighting, facing danger, but even he knew that he couldn’t do that to her, couldn’t deny her the right to protect her family. He loved her because of who she was. She was too fierce and too honorable not to do everything she could to put an end to Naraku and the threat he presented, not just for the sake of their family, but for all those he’d hurt in the past and would hurt in the future. To ask her to be less than she was wouldn’t be fair to her and it wasn’t what he wanted, not really.
He made it back the shrine and connected with the wards as he did a quick check around the grounds. It took longer than he would have liked because now he knew he needed to use his eyes and ears just as much as his nose and his youki to search for threats. Satisfied that they were safe for now he headed for the house.
The door opened for him and Kagome greeted him with a crushing embrace. “It’s going to be like this every time, isn’t it?”
“Yeah,” he said as he smoothed her hair. “But we already agreed that nothing is going to keep us from being here for each other and for our pups, and that’s a promise I intend to keep.”
She nodded. “Me too.”
He nuzzled her throat taking in her scent and wanting to comfort her, wishing he could spare her all of this. ‘Where are the pups?’
Kagome leaned into him. ‘When I told Hisako-san you were on your way back she insisted on watching them for a little while. She told me it would give us a chance to finish what we started earlier.’
He chuckled as he could feel her embarrassment. “Gonna have to get used to that.”
Her cheeks were bright with color but she smiled up at him. ‘I figured that out already. If she was willing to say outright that you and Sesshomaru used to get swatted with rolled up newspaper then she probably doesn’t hold back much. Even still, it is going to be strange having someone around who always knows when we’re… doing that.’
He lifted her into his arms. ‘Believe me she’s used to it. Youkai aren’t so prudish about sex. She’s got a couple of lovers herself. For most it’s just another biological urge to satisfy.’
"For most? What about for you then?" she asked as he carried her up the stairs towards their bedroom.
“That’s all it used to be for me too," he told her. “But not anymore."
"Because you love me," she said.
"Because I love you,” he agreed. “And because yeah, I’m still satisfying myself physically, but with you it’s so much more than that. It not just my body that needs you, but my heart and my mind and my soul. What about you?”
"Oh, you satisfy me physically too,” she said with a grin.
He growled and tossed her on the bed. She squealed a little as he pounced on her. “My brother is right, you are impertinent.” He loved the way she shivered beneath his as he nipped at her throat, the feel of her body arching into his from beneath him. “Lucky for you so am I.”
"Mmm, very lucky,” she breathed as his hands made quick work of the ties on her clothing.
"That’s more like it, woman,” he teased.
She tugged at his torn shirt and he pulled it off, throwing to across the room. Then it was his turn to shudder as she licked his shoulder, where she could see the white line that was all that remained of his earlier injury. The blood on his arm was dry now, but she could taste its coppery sweet flavor as she licked her lips.
“Shit, maybe I should go take a shower first,” he offered.
She lifted her eyes towards his and then very deliberately licked him again. The sound he made next was almost a snarl as his youki exploded in power. His eyes were still gold but he was definitely more youkai now as his markings appeared faintly on his cheeks. She gasped as he flipped her over and pulled her roughly up onto her knees. Her entire body was warm with anticipation as she waited for him to give them both what they wanted.
“Please, please,” she begged a little breathlessly, adding a pleading sort of whimper as she rocked back towards him. ‘I need you.’
She couldn’t breathe as he slammed into her in a single thrust. She quivered around him as she came undone and a low rough sort of laugh escaped him as he laid over her back, nipping at her shoulder, buried as deeply inside her as it was possible for him to be. The sound was entirely masculine and made her shiver at the promise it held. He was just getting started.

When Hisako knocked lightly a good while later, Kagome didn’t have to guess why as her breasts felt heavy and full. The problem was that the rest of her body felt like jelly. She whined a little and beside her InuYasha laughed.
“I’ll get them,” he said placing a kiss on her forehead and covering her with the sheet.
She watched him with a smile as he left their bed and pulled on his pants before opening the door and relieving Hisako of the cradle in her arms. Kagome blushed all the way down to her toes as the older woman looked past her mate and winked at her. Yes, that was definitely going to take some getting used to but she’d much rather have such a reason to be embarrassed than not, especially since her mate was such an amazing lover.
Once the door was closed, she sat up and scooted away from the headboard, laying the only pillow that remained on the bed across her lap. InuYasha passed her both of their pups, one at a time and then took up the place she had left open at her back just for him. His arms came to rest under hers, helping her to support their children while they ate. Her head fell back against his shoulder, and she smiled as his nose brushed across her cheek.
“So, tell me about the mediation,” she said. “What should I expect?”
“Well, like I said before there will be four Lords who will preside over the dispute,” InuYasha told her. “Sesshomaru will be there and both Tatsuya and Ryuunosuke will probably have two of their most trusted or best fighters there.”
“I thought you said this was to resolve it without bloodshed,” Kagome said.
“Keh, ideally it will be, but there have been times when it didn’t work out that way,” InuYasha replied. “There’s been more than one assassination attempt too, against the one calling for the mediation more often than not.”
“Because without the complainant, the mediation can’t proceed?” she asked.
He nuzzled her throat, “Yeah, but I’m gonna be there too and I won’t let anything happen to you.”
“What about weapons? Am I allowed to have my bow and arrows?” she questioned.
He let out a slow breath. “Ceremonial weapons only. Which doesn’t really mean anything, considering you can call almost anything a ceremonial weapon, except probably an arrow.”
“But if I at least had a bow I could use it to deflect,” she said. “And I can channel my powers into almost anything so I could bring my dagger, the one I used to draw blood when we signed the treaty.”
“You should definitely be able to get away with that,” he said. “Shit, where was I?”
“Apologizing for swearing in front of our babies?” she posed. “Unless going up against an angry miko whose children's first words were curse words sounds appealing to you.”
He chuckled. “Oi, I’m gonna try, but I’ve been using those words for longer than you’ve been alive.”
She sighed a little. “Fine, I guess that’s good enough. So everyone is there and then what? I’m guessing I have to speak first.”
“Sesshomaru will list everyone present and then you will make your complaint,” InuYasha told her. “Basically you’ll say everything you did earlier to me and him. Then Tatsuya will have a chance to respond and so will Ryuunosuke. There is a chance someone will protest you being allowed to call for the mediation, but that is going to go our way so it doesn’t really matter.”
She just nodded a little. “Doesn’t seem too complicated except the part where someone might try to kill me. What about after? I doubt Tatsuya is going to be too happy if the outcome goes our way.”
InuYasha moved around from behind her and lifted Emiko who was done eating into his arms. As he held her against his shoulder, he patted her back. “He won’t be able to do anything, at least not at the mediation. If he does, Sesshomaru can execute him right there without question. Doesn’t mean he won’t try to come after us later, but he’ll be in for a hell of surprise if he shows his face here.”
“Do you, do you think I’m doing the right thing?” she asked. “What it makes things worse, me sticking my miko nose in youkai business? What if some who might have otherwise taken our side go the other way because of it?”
“Aren’t you the one who told Sesshomaru to, what was it, stand on conviction?” he questioned. ‘I have faith in you, my mate. Right or wrong, I know your heart and everything you do comes from only the purest of intentions.’
She smiled a little. “Good intentions don’t always bring the best results though, do they?”
“Either way, I’m with you,” he told her firmly. “We will win this fight, Kagome. You and me, side by side, to hell and back if that’s what it takes. There is no other way this turns out. I won’t let there be.”
“You make it really hard for me to worry when you say stuff like that, with such certainly,” she told him with a soft upturn of her lips.
“Good,” he said. “Because I meant every word.”

“Where is the infant!” Naraku bellowed.
“The miko she resisted my mirror,” the girl replied, unfazed even as the woman at her side flinched and stepped closer to her. She rubbed the edge of the framed silver disc in her hands, fingers tracing a small crack. “I had to release them before the holy arrow broke the mirror.”
“Have you anything to add, Kagura?” Naraku asked.
“The hanyou, when he came after us he was changed,” Kagura reported. “I would have sworn him to be a full youkai in that moment. Had the miko not called him back I doubt we would have been able to make our escape.”
“This failure is most disappointing,” Naraku said.
“You should not be surprised considering the he rescued the miko and her child right out from under you,” Kagura said.
Naraku’s eyes flashed and he smiled as she clutched at her chest and sank to her knees. He’d been so certain that he’d rid her of all her defiance, but apparently he’d been wrong. Normally that would have been infuriating but in this case he found himself pleased. She was so much more fun this way. In fact since the miko’s escape she’d been downright impudent at times. Hurting her was so much more enjoyable when she looked at him with those hateful eyes and he would delight in bleeding the hope from them once more. He loosened his grip on her heart and at last she sagged though her eyes still burned.
“Kukuku, lucky for you I find your disrespect amusing,” he said. “Pointless, but amusing, but I will not tolerate such failure in the future. Is that understood?”
Kagura regained her feet and forced herself to nod, even as she cursed herself for not aiding the miko when she’d been given the chance. If she’d helped her in some small way she could have bargained for her help to escape her own prison, and failing that found freedom in death.
“You two be gone from my sight, before I change my mind,” Naraku commanded. “Send in the dragon on your way out.”
She followed behind Kanna, wishing not for the first time that she was the one who was empty inside or that the damnable miko hadn’t awakened a part of her she’d thought was lost forever by escaping. Her lips curled upwards as she thought about just how angry Naraku had been. It hadn’t been a pleasant experience for anyone, but to see him throwing such a tantrum like a child whose favorite toy had been taken away, well there was definitely pleasure to be found in that.
“Naraku-sama, will see you now,” Kanna told the dragon as they passed.
“It’s about time,” the youkai huffed.
She considered warning him not to take such an attitude with Naraku for his own safety, but only for an instant. Let him learn that lesson the hard way like she’d done. Perhaps he would even be killed in a fit of rage, which from what she knew would only aid the cause of the miko and the youkai no taishou in ridding the world of the one who had enslaved her.
She glanced back just in time to see the door close behind the arrogant dragon.
