Though Jakotsu's scream wasn't the first one he heard, and certainly not the only as other guests in the saloon began to awake and realize what was happening, it was the only one Bankotsu cared about at first as he rushed back in through the door he had left only a few minutes before; completely confused by what was going on.
His confusion was short lived as he rushed through the door and was instantly met with a wave of hot air and smoke. Even as understanding dawned on him, he was already racing up the stairs toward his room; wondering how a fire this big could have come to life in the few minutes that he was gone. What he found upstairs only served to utterly confuse him.
All of the doors were barred from opening by a piece of wood being place in the handles. It was at that moment that Bankotsu finally realized this fire was not an accident and who ever had started it had wanted all of them to die that night. Briefly wondering who the intended target was, Bankotsu soon forgot about that line of thought when Jakotsu called out his name once more. Bringing his attention back to what was more important at the moment, Bankotsu pulled the wood free of the door and tossed it over his shoulder before throwing open the doors and causing Jakotsu to fall into him.
Quickly catching him, Bankotsu did a fast intake of his appearance to assure himself that he was not hurt before realizing the man was now sobbing against him. Knowing they couldn't be wasting time right now, Bankotsu unknowingly repeated Jakotsu's earlier actions by slapping him across the face. "You can freak out later if you want, and hell I'll even hold ya while you do it, but right now you've got to pull yourself together.
"I need you to go around opening all of the doors so the others can get out," Bankotsu instructed and after receiving a nod of agreement and understanding from his companion, he watched for a moment as Jakotsu began rushing toward the first door and removing the wood that had locked its occupants in. Quickly rushing toward the other side of the hallway. Bankotsu began doing the same as he shouted, "Head toward the door leading to the outhouse! It's not block!"
Soon enough the rooms were empty and the two were headed downstairs toward the exit when Jakotsu called out, "What about the owner?" Over the roar of the fire and the screams of the others, he could barely make out Bankotsu reminding him that all of the rooms upstairs were empty. "No the owners usually have a room right off of the bar so they can hear if any of the patrons try and get into the alcohol in the middle of the night," Jakotsu explained remembering the bar keep at his saloon had done it.
"Very well I will check on him, but you need to get out of here with the others," Bankotsu insisted when they had arrived at the door leading to the outside. Seeing he seemed to be hesitating, he insisted, "You have been in here much longer than I have and have breathed in more smoke. I can't be watching out for you if I end up having to carry the owner. I need you to wait for me outside. I will be right there." Hearing his promise seemed to be enough as Jakotsu nodded before heading outside.
As Bankotsu made his way toward the bar, he silently prayed that his last meal would not come back up as it was threatening to do with every cough as the smoke got thicker the closer he got. Though it meant very little to him them, he began to realize that this was because he was getting closer to where the fire was started.
Praying the whiskey wasn't ready to blow yet, Bankotsu ducked behind the bar and quickly located the only door that was barred. Instantly deciding it was the one to his room and the other was to the kitchen, Bankotsu unlocked and pulled open the doors to find the owner unconscious on the floor. Quickly picking him up and tossing his dead weight over his shoulder, Bankotsu began making his way back the way he had gone. This time, however, we he was on the other side of the bar, he noticed the lone figure sitting in the middle of the burning room.
