InuYasha didn’t have to go far before could smell the water of the lake and it helped him to push himself to run harder, faster. He would get her there in time and she would be okay. She had to be.
In what felt like forever but had in fact been no more than a minute or two he was coming to a stop at the water’s edge. Ryuunosuke hovered beside them and Chinatsu slipped off his back. Once she was safely on her feet the dragon youkai resumed his humanoid form.
“Now what?” InuYasha prompted.
“Um, I have to, it would be better if I could,” the Chinatsu tried. “It will work better without the barrier of our clothing.”
“Perhaps I should find somewhere nearby to keep watch,” Ryuunosuke offered. “Just in case there are others who did not reveal themselves. Call if you have need of me.”
“I can’t leave her,” InuYasha said quietly once the new dragon Lord was gone.
“I wouldn’t ask you to,” Chinatsu told him. “Just that you might turn away to remove her clothing, please until I am the water.
“Yeah kid, I can do that,” he said.
He positioned his back towards her and then knelt down. He could hear the girl undressing and moved quickly to get Kagome out of her clothing as well. The tendrils marring her skin were now all the way up to her hip and starting to spread not just upwards but out across her belly and he found himself praying that this would not take from them the possibility of the many children Shiori had seen for them. He knew he was more blessed than he deserved already but now that Kagome had shown him what his future could really be like, he wanted more. He wanted it all, with her.
“InuYasha-sama, please bring her into the water,” Chinatsu said, her voice taking on a confidence she had lacked before now.
He waded in clothes and all and couldn’t help but notice how much stronger the kids youki felt after only a few minutes in the water or the way she seemed to have come alive. She’d been beautiful before, like most youkai, but as her hair laid on the surface of the water and draped over her nakedness dancing with the ripples, he began to wonder if it wasn’t the dragons of the sea that gave rise to the myth of tennyo. He knew it was a stupid thing to be thinking about right now, but it was easier than thinking about losing his Kagome.
“You can stay besider her, but I need you to release her into the water,” she told him. “I will hold her and though she will be beneath the surface it will not harm her.”
It was hard for him to trust this young dragon with the life of his mate, but he knew there was no other choice so he nodded. He leaned over and kissed her forehead before letting her slip from his arms. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her as she floated downwards and then stopped only a few centimeters below the surfaces, and close enough to it that he could see her perfectly. He felt it of course as the young ones youki swelled and then she was gone and in her place was a deep blue creature, with scales that were irridescent when hit by the light of the sun. She looked similar to the few dragons he’s seen in their true form, except that instead of legs and wings she had many different sets of fins and her head was a bit more narrow and and angular, almost like a cross between a water snake and a dragon and one of those tropical fighting fish.
Forcing himself not to react he simply watched as Chinatsu swam in circles around Kagome. She moved faster and faster, until she became nothing more than a ring of blues and greens even to his keen eyes. He could feel her doing something with her youki as the surface of the water remained as flat as glass when it should have been churning.
How long had it been? He couldn’t tell. Much longer than a human should have been able to stay underwater that was for certain and yet he could feel that Kagome wasn’t drowning. He held his breath as the the lines marking her began to retreat a milky cloud appearing near the wound on Kagomes lower leg, which was somehow being pushed towards the shore, still without disturbing the surface. Clearly whatever she was doing was working and he’d never be able to thank her enough. He was going to make damn sure that she ended up back where she belonged in some lake or river or the sea, safe with her own kind where her power flourished.
Chinatsu slowed as no more venom remained to flee the wound. Then she coiled herself around Kagome so that only her face was visible before drawing her deeper so that her back did not breach the water as she began to rotate working her way downwards. He didn’t know what to make of it as the dragon laid her head on the back until she changed back and rested her head on her arms.
“You can take her out now,” Chinatsu said her voice quiet as she struggled to keep her eyes open. “I’ve cleansed her of the venom and healed as much as I can. She will recover, but she will need time to heal what I could not. Perhaps if there had been someone to teach me I could have done more.”
“Keh, you did enough,” he said as he climbed out of the water with her in his arms. “That she’s gonna get better is all I care about. Thank you.” He laid her in the grass so that he could shake off before getting Kagome at least partially dressed. As he knelt down beside his mate he looked to the young woman who had saved her. “I guess it’s better for you to stay in there for now.”
“Yes,” she replied. “The venom was very strong and did a lot of damage, but I too will recover. Your children still nurse from her?”
He nodded. “Only time they don’t is when she isn’t there, and then it’s still from her, but in a bottle.”
“She should express all that she has once and then again before feeding them just to be certain there is no trace of the venom left behind,” Chinatsu told him. “You should be able to taste and smell that her milk is pure again.”
“Okay,” he said.
“One other thing…” she said quietly. “I don’t know how best to say this, or if maybe her being a miko and the mate of one such as you will be enough to fix everything, but several of her organs were damaged, badly. Do you understand?”
“You mean there’s a chance the two pups we’ve got will be the only ones we’ll ever have,” he replied.
“I’m sorry,” she told him.
“Not your fault,” he said quietly as he caressed Kagome’s cheek with his knuckles. “When I saw how it was spreading I considered that possibility myself, but she’s strong and I have to believe that whatever is meant to happen will. Besides I’ve already got the two most perfect pups in the world anyway, which is more than I ever imagined I would have.”
“I’ve heard so many things about her,” Chinatsu offered. “Those easiest to believe were all clearly lies, and those that seemed impossible the truth.”
He smiled a little. “I know exactly what you mean. She sure as hell took me by surprise. Hell, she still does.”
“I can see how much you care for her and would say she’s lucky to have you, but I think it would be better to say you are lucky to have each other,” she said her tone laced with the sadness and envy of what could never be for herself.
InuYasha looked at the girl and remembered her words about what the bastard Naraku had done to her. “Don’t give up yet, kid. I don’t know if she can do it on herself, but she’s a healer. I’ve seen her bring a youkai child back from certain death, heal some of the worst injuries I’ve ever seen. She’d have tried for you, even if you hadn’t saved her life, and I know when she recovers she’ll insist on the chance to help you if you’ll let her.”
Before Chinatsu could say anything in reply they both felt the imminent arrival of his brother. Sesshomaru materialized from his energy from only a few steps away from him and Kagome and waited him to signal that it was okay to approach, so he did.
“She will live,” Sesshomaru said.
InuYasha didn’t feel the need to reply since it hadn’t been a question. “I want whoever did this to her. If it was that bastard Takahiro...”
“Hn, I think it likely he was involved,” Sesshomaru told him. “He slithered away while our attention was on her, but he is mistaken if he thinks there is anywhere he can hide that we will not find him and show him exactly what we do to those who attempt to harm what is ours to protect.”
The youkai in him was pleased. He would be permitted to go after the filthy habu, Lord or not, and have his vengeance for Kagome. “Sesshou, the kid, we need to do right by her.”
“And so we shall,” Sesshomaru said going over to the young dragon. “Any wish, so long as it is my power to grant shall be yours. There is a lake on my lands you could have as your own for now, and I will personally go in search of others of your kind and see if we cannot find your true home, or you can go back to the home of the new Lord of the Dragons.”
“Surely I am not worth so much,” Chinatsu tried her eyes shining.
“You have done a great service to my house and more than that to the world,” Sesshomaru told her. “I do not assign worth based on the circumstances of one’s birth, nor do I base it upon a what was done to a child who could not protect herself, who should not have had to. Instead I would base it upon who one shows themself to be and I have seen your true strength little dragon. What will you choose?”
“I would chose to accept your generous offer, Sesshomaru,” she replied.
“InuYasha take her home so that she might recover,” Sesshomaru said. “I would not object to being kept informed of her condition. I will personally escort the little dragon to safety and then begin the investigation of how widespread the use of the dorei soutei might have been. Ryuunosuke, your first act as Lord of the Dragons will be to assist me.”
The youkai appeared in a ball of light only seconds later. “Of course, Sesshomaru-sama.”
InuYasha stood, Kagome in his arms. “Don’t go after that bastard Habu without me.”
“Rest assured little brother, I would not take from you that which is yours by right,” Sesshomaru said.
Satisfied by his answer InuYasha wasted no more time before taking off, Kagome cradled against him. He was tempted to try and reach for her with his mind, but he didn’t know how much pain she might be in if she woke up so he knew it would be better to wait until he had her back home where she would be most protected.
“Oh, what has happened?” Hisako said as he entered through the back door.InuYasha’s lip curled upwards. “That bastard dragon put the dorei soutei on a kid then tried to kill her before she could speak against him. Kagome broke the spell and he was deposed and then it all went to shit. While we were taking care of Tatsuya and the traitors with him Kagome was bitten by some hella nasty viper. Luckily the dragon girl was a water dragon, but the venom did plenty of damage before we got it out of her.”
“You should get her into bed then,” Hisako said. “Once she’s settled I’ll will go out and get what I need to make the tea we used to use when Sesshomaru-sama accidentally poisoned someone when he was young. It is a potent medicine and even if it doesn’t help it certainly will do no harm. Will you be able to look after the little ones and her?”
“Keh, I’ll be fine,” he replied. “If it might help her then I want to try it.”
He carried her up to their room, Hisako following behind him with their pups sleeping soundly in their cradle. Once the old woman was gone, he set about undressing Kagome. He wiped her down with a damp cloth and then used the breast pump to start the process of getting her ready to be able to nurse again like he knew she would want. It was weird, only because she was currently unconscious, but it had to be done, so he did it.
When there was no more to be had he took the pump and the milk and threw them both out. He’d just go buy another one rather than risk having left even the smallest trace of venom behind after washing it. In the cradle Kazuki started to fuss, no doubt having scented that they were back. He knelt down and laid a gentle hand on them both.
“It’s okay,” he said. “I just need a few more minutes and then you two can snuggle up with Mama, while I heat up something for you to eat.”
Moving quickly, because a part of him was certain that there was no way the cries of their children would go unheard by her no matter how deep she was in her own mind, he grabbed one of his t-shirts and dressed her so that Kazuki couldn’t try and nurse when he was beside her. He pulled it down so that it covered her to mid thigh before gathering Kazuki and Emiko into his arms to lay them with her in the center of the bed, there son under one of her arms and their daughter under the other.
Certain they would all be okay for the few minutes it would take him to warm up a couple of bottles he headed downstairs. As he entered the kitchen to find a pair of bottles already in the warmer, he made a note to be sure to thank Hisako for being pretty much perfect.
‘InuYasha?’
He froze as he was reaching for the bottles. She sounded confused and hesitant and distant. ‘It’s okay, beautiful. You’re okay, but you might want to stay how you are now for a little longer. The kid got the venom out of you but it did some damage and you’ll probably be hurting.’
‘I feel warm somehow.’
He grabbed the bottles. ‘It’s probably the pups. They wanted their Mama.’
‘Where are you?’ she asked.
‘On my way back right now,’ he told her. ‘Chinatsu-chan said you shouldn’t feed them just yet, not until you can pump a second time, just to be safe and make sure there is no trace of anything that could hurt them so I’m bringing them their dinner.’
‘InuYasha, is something wrong? Mostly you feel happy, but there’s something else, something a little… sad I guess.’
He stepped into the bedroom with a sigh. ‘It’s nothing that can’t wait until you’re feeling better. In fact it might not even be anything really. I’m not sure yet.’
‘Oh, okay. InuYasha, I love you.’
He sat down on the bed, picking up Kazuki and laying him in the crook of his knee so that he was propped up enough to pretty much hold his own bottle. The he gathered Emiko into his arms. ‘I love you too, mate, always. Rest for me now, regain your strength.’
He felt her withdraw, and relaxed. He just wasn’t ready to tell her the rest, and he hadn’t been lying when he said he wasn’t even sure yet that there was anything to tell. Instead of continuing to worry about what the future might or might not hold for them he occupied his mind with tending to his children. Once they were finished eating, he changed them and then spent time talking to them and playing with them while he waited for Hisako to return.
She came in with a kettle of hot water and a cup just as he was placing them in their cradle since they had fallen asleep. “She has not yet woken?”
“When she got bitten, she put herself in a meditative state to slow down her heart and cut off the pain,” he replied. “She came out of it enough to touch my mind, but I thought it might be better to wait for you to get back before she really wakes up, so I told her to rest for a little longer. If you’ve got the tea ready I’ll see if I can’t reach her and bring her out of it.”
“I will pour the water now,” she said. “If she is in any pain this will ease it as well.”
InuYasha nodded and slipped one of his hands into Kagome’s. ‘Hey beautiful, can you hear me. Hisako got some medicine for you so it’s time to wake up.’
‘InuYasha.’
‘That’s right,’ he said as he brushed her hair back off her forehead and then kissed her there. ‘Take it slow so if there’s any pain you can ease into it.’
He could feel her coming awake in stages, the distance between their minds lessening and then she whimpered and he knew why. Even though it was only second hand he could feel the burning in her belly.
‘InuYasha there’s something wrong.’
‘I know. I can feel it through you,’ he said. ‘Hisako said the medicine will help with pain, and no matter what, everything is going to be okay.'
He slid his arm around behind her and lifted her up, holding out his other hand until Hisako passed him the cup. He was only vaguely aware that the youkai woman left them as she cracked open her eyes which were shining with tears and he held the cup to her lips. It took several minutes for her to drink it all but whatever else it might do for her, he knew it was taking away her pain. He set the cup aside and helped her position herself against the headboard.
She captured her lower lip between her teeth as she looked at him. She put both hands against her belly. “I feel wrong, in here.” She must not have liked what she saw in his face or felt from him because suddenly she was sobbing. ‘InuYasha...’
He reached for her, holding her tightly against him as he ran his fingers through her hair in an attempt to soothe her. “I know, but it’s gonna be okay. Nothing is certain, not yet. You could heal on your own or we’ll find someone, and even if… I love you, always, no matter what.”
Kazuki whined and started calling for his mother, and it did a better job calming Kagome down than InuYasha could have hoped to do. He quickly retrieved their son and passed him into her arms. He watched her for a moment as she kissed him and rocked him as she held him close, before picking up Emiko.
“We’re really lucky already, huh?” she asked quietly a few tears slipping down her cheeks.
“Yeah, we are,” he agreed. “But I told that kid not to give up hope so I’m not about to let you either, not when we don’t know anything for sure, not yet. I’m laying down the law woman. You and me we are gonna hope for the best together and that’s final.”
She managed a small smile. “You’re lucky that I agree with you this time, but don’t get used to saying those particular words to me or I’ll roll up a newspaper, see if I don’t.”
He chuckled, able to still feel an aching sort of sadness from her, but also that she had taken his words to heart. “Keh, won’t do you any good if you can’t catch me first.”
“Maybe I’ll just bide my time and get you when you least expect it,” she teased. “I do have ways of distracting you, you know.”
He arched a brow at her. “Now I’m confused. Did you just threaten to seduce me, because if so then that isn’t making it less likely that I’ll say that again. In fact I’m thinking about saying it again right now.”
She laughed. “Prevert. You’re lucky I love you so much.”
“Yeah, I really am,” he said.
