It was long after dawn by the time the final flames were doused, but by then it was far too late to save the once proud saloon; which was now nothing more than a pile of smoking wood. Though the saloon girls and most of the previous nights patrons had headed toward the dinner where they had been offered a free breakfast, Bankotsu and Jakotsu had remained behind to speak with the sheriff once he had finally arrived.
Though he was not looking forward to talking to the lawman, he was the only one to know that someone had purposely started the fire. Someone who had gotten away during the commotion; which was obvious by the fact there were no remains where they should have been. It had been the first thing the sheriff had searched for once the fire was out.
As he was explaining to the sheriff that he had not actually seen the man, and in fact had only heard his voice and seen his silhouette, apparently Jakotsu had been telling the owner that Bankotsu had carried him out of the fire since the moment he was done speaking, he had come over wanting to shake his hand. Finding the request a bit odd, but not unreasonable, Bankotsu had allowed him to do so even though he felt there was something off about the man.
"I wish to repay you, but I do not currently have anything to my name. Once the saloon is rebuilt, how about staying for free whenever you are in town," the saloon owner offered; still tightly grasping his hand.
"Thank you for the offer, but I do not believe I will be coming back this way again," Bankotsu admitted, finally getting his hand back. Wanting to get out I there as soon as possible, Bankotsu turned toward Jakotsu and informed him, "We should be heading out. We were planning to leave at dawn anyways.
Though he wasn't actually aware of that fact, Jakotsu seemed to understand that it meant he really wanted to get out of there quickly and simply nodded his head in agreement. "We should stop by the dinner and pick up breakfast to go on the way out. No sense in passing up a free meal; plus I am sure you could use the energy after all of that."
After quickly deciding he was right, Bankotsu sent Jakotsu to go get them some food; promising to pick him up once he got his horse. Certain he wouldn't be left behind, Jakotsu headed off with nothing more than a nod; his mind already beginning to wonder what they had to offer for breakfast that would travel well.
True to his word, it wasn't long before Bankotsu was stopping outside the dinner and waiting for Jakotsu to come out with their meal. He didn't have to wait long before he emerged with a large bundle wrapped in a bandanna and was asking for a hand. Once he was situated behind and Bankotsu was certain neither Jakotsu nor the food would fall off, he signaled his horse to head out of town.
...
Wanting to get as far away from the town as possible before stories of the heroic man that matched his description made it back to the lawmen that were looking for him, Bankotsu had kept the pace as quick as his horse could handle for a long distance carrying two passengers. Other than a quick stop to break their fast, it wasn't until long after supper and dinner time had come and gone that he finally stopped.
As he helped Jakotsu down off of the horse, Bankotsu couldn't help but notice the distant look in his eyes; his expression matching the atmosphere he had hanging over him the entire trip so far that day. A bit worried about his unusual mood, Bankotsu decided to broach the subject the moment they had begun to eat. "How are you doing, Jakotsu?"
When he continued to remain silent for a long moment afterward, Bankotsu began to suspect that he wasn't even aware he was talking to him, but eventually he proves him wrong by responding. "I'm fine. The fire just caused a few memories to come to the surface and I am now dealing with flashbacks of being abandoned. It will pass in time," Jakotsu assured him before falling silent once more.
It wasn't until he had finished eating that he began speaking once more, "You can just drop me off at the saloon in the next town we come to. I'll start over trying to make money there." Confused by his sudden desire to leave again, Bankotsu could only sit there staring at him in silence for a long moment; completely forgetting about his own unfinished meal.
"Why in the world do you want to be left at the next town for? And why do you want to go back to working at a saloon again when you don't have to?" Bankotsu demanded, doing everything he could not to let his voice rise in volume. He had already been through even that day, he didn't need to be shouted at even if he did want to get away from him.
"We were only supposed to be traveling together temporarily anyways. You were going to leave me at the first town anyways, but since that didn't exactly work out, the second will have to do. You will be able to travel much faster without a second body on your horse," Jakotsu insisted as though it was the most obvious thing in the world. Worry he would strangle the very confusing man sitting before him, Bankotsu closed his eyes and slowly began to count to ten.
