Chapter 39 - Asleep

"I don't know what to do, Inuyasha!" Kagome whined. "You have to come over."
He could hear in her voice that she was crying, and the hanyou sighed. He knew that his brother would be caught in his lies one of these days, and it seemed as if it happened yesterday. Now it had somehow become his responsibility to save his best friend's relationship from imploding, all because Sesshoumaru was a lying sissy who couldn't simply come out and confess his own stupid actions to the woman he loves.
"I'll be there in twenty," the hanyou replied before ending the call and grabbing his keys. He couldn't let Kagome lose the love of her life. He didn't want Sesshoumaru to, either, mostly because he didn't want to see the taiyoukai pouting until the end of time. He knew his brother wanted to make the miko his mate. Inuyasha even had a little trick up his sleeve, plans of helping that mating happen sooner rather than later, and he didn't want to see everything fall apart.
He told Sesshoumaru that the hotel was a bad idea. It was dangerous because it looked so incriminating. No woman would buy the whole napping idea without a full confession and a demonstration of what he has been hiding from her for so long. There was no way for this to end well without that very thing happening, and it didn't seem as if the taiyoukai was ready to do so. He was running out of time, however. The longer Kagome had to stew about her suspicions, the less likely she would be to buy the god's honest truth.
*Fierce Fight to the Death* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
During the drive to her house, Inuyasha tried to figure out what to tell Kagome. How could he reassure her without spilling the beans? There had to be a way, and he had less than twenty minutes to come up with a good explanation or Sesshoumaru's life as he knew it would be over in a heartbeat. He wanted to slaughter his brother for having done this to her. He hated it when Kagome cried. She was such a sweet, loving thing, and she deserved to be happy all the time, not the neurotic mess the taiyoukai's lies had turned her into.
Maybe he would be able to get some information out of her. He was suspicious about the way she seemed to be systematically drawing out Sesshoumaru's instincts right at the same time that his brother was trying to introduce them to her. He had a feeling that she figured out her boyfriend was hiding something from her much earlier than yesterday, and that she had been trying to tell him, step by step, that it was okay, that she didn't care that he was a demon, perhaps even that she liked that part of him.
With no real plan in mind other than deny, deny, deny, Inuyasha pulled into the driveway. Seconds later the front door flew open, and his best friend was in his arms bawling like a newborn baby. The hanyou scooped her up and carried her inside out of the cold with another heavy sigh. This was not going to be fun.
*Shadows Creeping* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
Once she calmed, Inuyasha had her tell him the whole story, starting with the phone call from the hotel, and by the time she was finished, he was even more worried. Sesshoumaru had lied to her face about the hotel room and his jacket, and Kagome knew that some part of his explanation had been untrue. From the moment when the shadows of doubt began creeping into her mind until that doubt was confirmed, she tried to convince herself that the taiyoukai would never betray her, but it had grown very difficult to do.
"Kagome," Inuyasha started. "Kagome, look at me. I want you to tell me the truth. You've known that he was hiding things from you for weeks now, haven't you?"
The miko's eyes widened, and the hanyou had his answer.
"I know he's been hiding his instincts from me, trying to appear and behave more human. I don't know why, but, with Sango's help, I've been trying to slowly let him know that I love all of him, that I don't care if he's a demon."
"That's what the chase in the tree farm was all about, right? Drawing out his instincts, calling to his beast?"
*After the Rain* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
"Yeah. I thought we were doing well, but maybe he decided it would be easier to be himself with a demoness."
"Kagome, I can guarantee you one hundred percent that he is not cheating on you. If he was and I found out, you'd be the first to know. This... What he's doing... It's stupid and pointless, and he's just being an idiot."
"So you're saying that he is getting a hotel room during his lunch break?"
Inuyasha sighed. He didn't want to confirm the most damning evidence, but he had to if he was to have any hope of reassuring her of Sesshoumaru's fidelity. "He is, but not for what you think. I promise you that."
"So then what's he doing? What else would he need a hotel room for?"
He could see the tears shimmering in the corners of her eyes, and he knew he had to say something to stop them or the rain of tears and the hysterics would start all over again.
*Ancient Magic* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
Could he say it though? Could he tell her what the taiyoukai was doing, like an idiot, in a hotel room? Could he manage that without giving away everything? It wasn't his place to tell her Sesshoumaru's secret, that he was using youkai magic to hide his markings, among other things. That was entirely on him, but the hanyou knew he had to say something, and fast.
"He's sleeping, alright?"
"Sleeping?" Kagome asked, sniffling loudly. "Why would he need to sleep? He sleeps all night."
"No, he doesn't, and I can't tell you why, either, so don't bother asking. I don't know why the moron doesn't just crash on the couch in his office, except that he probably doesn't want his secretary to catch him snoozing."
*Frozen Soul* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
"Well, you're not very helpful," Kagome grumbled.
"I sure as hell am. I'm here, ain't I? I'm telling you the truth, 'Gome. He's not cheating. He's just sleeping."
"So what else is he hiding from me, then? What else is he lying about? How am I supposed to trust him if I don't know what's going on?"
"I don't know, babe, but it's not my place to go spilling his secrets. You'll have to ask him, but it might be better to wait and let him confess to you. He's trying, but he's so freaked out over it that he's terrified to come out with it. Give him a little time, and I bet he'll tell you on his own."
"Sure, I'm just going to sit here blindly ignoring the fact that my supposed boyfriend is sneaking around and lying to me. Sounds like a barrel of laughs."
Inuyasha shook his head and sighed. It was going to be a cold night in Kagome and Sesshoumaru's bed tonight.
*The World of Midnight* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
In the middle of the night, Kagome woke and checked the clock. It was just past midnight and she was curious. She rolled closer to the taiyoukai who was sleeping on his side of the bed tonight, unlike most other nights recently when he slept wrapped possessively around her. She couldn't forget Inuyasha's words that Sesshoumaru didn't sleep at night. She was sure that he did. How could he not? Why would he not? It didn't make any sense!
"Sesshoumaru?" she whispered softly. "Are you awake?"
The taiyoukai, who was facing the opposite direction, opened his eyes but said nothing. Of course he was awake. He was always awake, but he couldn't tell her that. If she knew he didn't sleep at night then she would want to know why, and he didn't know how to answer that question.
He had gotten a voicemail from his brother on his way home from work that day, but he hadn't listened to it. If he had, he might have acted differently, because by not speaking or moving, he was only confirming Kagome's suspicions that Inuyasha's story was crap. Sesshoumaru knew Kagome was still mad at him, that he had lost her trust, but he didn't know how to fix it, and so he stayed still and silent, unwilling to face her again. Dinner had been tense enough.
The miko repeated her question and even gently poked his shoulder. She waited several minutes before sighing. "I knew it."
