~Tokyo, 2012~
Shippo had no way to recall the amount of time they had actually spent in the
nowhere that was the gate between Kagome's time and his own; it could have been
a moment or an eternity. What he did recall was that the void seemed to be filled
with stars and peaceful in a way his own reality would never be.
It was all too soon that the stars and the soft blue light disappeared, leaving
him once again at the bottom of the old Bone Eater’s Well. For a moment he was
confused as he looked up and saw not the sky, but a roof. But then, once he
considered it, he was more than a bit relieved. Didn't Kagome once tell him
that in her time the well existed within a building? Yes; she did say that,
and so did Inuyasha come to think of it. Despite being such a young kit, he
did bother to listen to some of their babble. At least, part of the time. That
is when they weren't arguing, weren't being attacked, and he wasn't stuffing
his face with the 'candy' Kagome used to bring him. He allowed himself a small
smile of nostalgia, as he held Shinta close against him and in one jump, cleared
the well.
Once outside of the well house, he inhaled deeply, searching for a hint of Kagome.
He immediately regretted it, as he was assaulted with a bevy of scents that
were more than unpleasant to him. Apparently, the ningens of this time had done
much to pollute the air. It bothered him immensely, and for a moment he wondered
how Inuyasha had been able to stand it at all, since even as an inu-hanyou,
he had had a much sharper sense of smell than a kitsune-youkai.
Still, among the carbon and metallic scents that seemed to be very much a part
of the air itself, there was that little hint of lilac and apples - a scent
he had missed so very much for so very long.
The well house itself was dark, the only light coming from the few rays of sun
that burst in between the slats of wood that made up the walls. As he looked
around, he caught sight of an old bow and a quiver of arrows - both of which
were covered with a heavy layer of dust, and it was apparent that they'd been
there for a very long time. The sight of them disturbed him.
He wondered exactly how many years had passed for Kagome since she had been
in here. Would she be an old lady now, like Kaede had been when he knew her?
He shuddered; Kagome was eternally youthful in his mind; for her to be otherwise...
he couldn't even consider it.
He hastily concentrated on an illusion to give himself the appearance of a normal
human, and then he made his way outside. Shippo blinked a few times as his eyes
adjusted to the difference in the light. He noticed with a strange sense of
detachment that it was very nearly sunset. It had been the same time of day
on the other side of the well.
Shippo briefly glanced at his surroundings, and he couldn't help but be amazed
at what he saw. He saw the shrine that had been built by Miroku and Sango's
descendants, and a home that must belong to Kagome and her family, but no forest.
Where the forest used to be was now a series of ningen dwellings and other structures
as far as the eye could see. Far off near the horizon, his eyes could barely
make out some buildings of impossible heights, and he had to blink his eyes
several times to convince himself that they were not illusionary.
So caught up was he in his purveyance of the landscape, that he did not immediately
notice the young ningen girl creeping up behind him, until the breeze carried
with it a scent that was quite like Kagome's, and yet subtly different.
He turned to face her and perhaps question her regarding Kagome and her whereabouts.
As he did, he felt the unexpected sensation of a sword against his neck and
he narrowed his eyes at his would be attacker. The onna threatening him was
shaking with fear, and yet her sword remained amazingly steady.
Shippo took in her appearance and smirked; even with the sword against his neck,
the little onna was no threat to him at all. She was young, dressed indecently
and barely out of her childhood. The onna quite resembled a younger Kagome,
save for her height and her brown eyes.
She had to be related to Kagome somehow - did Kagome have a sister? No, she
never mentioned a sister. A little brother, yes, but a sister; no.
"Who the hell are you and what did you do to him? And what were you doing
in the well house?" The girl finally asked, staring pointedly at Shinta
in his arms.
Shippo suddenly realized what they must look like to her. No wonder she was
threatening him with a sword. Since he hadn't bothered to cast an illusion on
Shinta, she saw him for what he was -- a listless man covered in dried blood.
Not to mention that the style of their clothing must be odd if hers was anything
to go by, with her tight black hakama, short white haori, and thin black obi*.
"Onna, I mean you no harm, and I assure you - I did not cause any injury
to my son. Please believe me. We are merely travelers in great need of assistance.
We have come a long way to speak to the miko Kagome. Onegai, can you lead us
to her?"
He asked the question in the softest tone he could manage, influencing his words
with a bit of kitsune magic that would serve to calm the young onna, and cause
her not to doubt him.
Indeed, as she took on a slightly dazed expression and removed her sword from
his neck, he couldn't help but feel a bit triumphant.
The young girl smiled at him, and drew in a breath before opening her mouth
as if to answer. She said nothing, however, and Shippo felt a little bemused
as the onna instead narrowed her eyes and twitched her nose, as if she was scenting
him like a... like a dog.
Shippo's eyes widened and he took a better look at the girl, whose lips were
now closed and set in a determined line. He glanced at her battered sword, recognizing
it immediately. He had seen it in action many, many times after all.
A niggling suspicion made its way into his head, as he looked at her - really
looked at her.
"Who... what are you, onna, what are you really?"
The girl's reaction to the question was telling, as her eyes widened and her
gaze flickered over to the rapidly setting sun. Her body tensed, and he instinctively
knew that she was preparing to run.
"I... I have to go," she said, and then turned to run.
Suddenly, everything clicked, and he knew exactly who she had to be. He set
off after her almost immediately. She was much faster than he had expected,
and she almost eluded him. Still, he managed to get a hand on her shoulder just
before she reached the door to her home.
As he forced her to turn around, he was no longer facing a non-threatening ningen
onna. Instead, he found himself face to face with a pissed off female inu-hanyou.
Had he any question of her parentage, her next question - and the oh so delicate
way she phrased it -- completely dispelled the last of his doubts.
"What the fuck do you really want with my mother, kitsune?"

"Kagome... Kagome, wake up. This is your stop, hun."
For the second time that day, Kagome found herself being gently shaken awake.
This time by Eri, her dear friend and co-worker. Her cheeks burned with a hint
of red as she suddenly realized she had fallen asleep in the back of Eri's car.
"Oh! Eri, I'm so sorry. I've just been so very tired lately..."
"Heh, I don't blame you - having to go up and down those steps each day,"
Eri said, jokingly.
"But seriously Kags, maybe you should consider taking some time off. You're
not yourself lately and people are noticing..."
Kagome glared at her.
"I'm fine."
"Honey, you are not fine, and if you don't do something about it, you're
going to lose your job."
For a moment Kagome considered telling her to mind her own business, but deep
down she knew that her old friend was only concerned about her. She also knew
that she was right.
Kagome sighed.
"Perhaps you’re right. Maybe I need to take a few days..."
Or a few weeks. Or a few months... or forever. With the dreams that she'd been
having, how could she possibly concentrate enough to be an effective nurse?
Today she had almost given a patient 4 units of dilaudid instead of .4 - the
difference might have been fatal.
She lowered her head slightly in shame. Her body had been in the present, while
her mind had been somewhere in the Sengoku Jidai - a dangerous place for her
mind to be; especially while doling out strong narcotics to trauma patients.
She gave Eri a quick, reassuring smile, and got out of her car. She watched
her friend drive off until she was out of sight, and then began the long walk
up the shrine steps.
She was climbing the steps on auto-pilot, lost in her own gloomy thoughts when
her long-buried miko senses flared to life and she felt the presence of something
all too achingly familiar.
Youkai.
Desperately, she ran up the steps, two at a time. By the time she reached the
top, she was panting for breath. She took a moment to gain her bearings, and
wondered if she'd have time to get her bow and arrows out of the well house.
That is, if they hadn't deteriorated to the point where she could no longer
use them.
And then she heard her daughter's voice.
"What the fuck do you really want with my mother, kitsune?"
For a moment her heart stopped.
Kitsune?
Kagome felt her body surge with holy energy, and she ran as fast as her legs
could carry her toward the house. What she saw when she got there made her heart
pump wildly, and time stood still for her while her mind processed what her
heart already knew.
Her hanyou daughter had a half-transformed Tetsusaiga by her side as she confronted
a red-haired man wearing clothes the likes of which had not been seen in a hundred
years. He seemed to be holding something - no, someone in his arms. The
small red-haired man appeared human, but was anything but. Her miko senses told
her that his true appearance was being concealed by an illusion spell, and he
was emitting a large amount of youki -- youki that she recognized.
"Yuki... go inside," she ordered her daughter, her voice cracking.
Yuki gave her an obstinate look and tightened her grip on her sword.
"Now, Yuki. I'll explain later, I promise."
"Mother, he's a you--"
"Yuki. GO INSIDE!"
Peripherally, she noticed the youkai gently setting his companion against the
house, and turning to face her.
Her daughter's eyes met hers in a glare before she finally turned and went inside,
slamming the door behind her.
Kagome didn't care however. Her attention was focused on the eyes of the youkai
who was now slowly approaching her. Eyes that were full of a mixture of joy,
grief, pain and love. Eyes that she’d dearly missed, and often saw in her dreams.
He let his illusion fall, and she sucked in a breath. She noticed that he
had grown to be beautiful; almost ethereally so, with his chiseled features,
pointed ears, big green eyes and fair skin. He was small in stature, but very
well built; his fluffy red tail only adding to his appeal.
"Shippo..."
And then she was enveloped in a pair of warm arms as a tail snaked its way around
her body, and together, they wept.

A/N: Awww... feel the love. :) Regarding the eye color thing with Kenshin: It
will be explained in depth, but think of it this way: Violet - rurouni/human;
Gold - battousai/hanyou with his demon side under control; Red/completely demon,
out of control, and time to get the hell outta dodge ;). Also, Kenshin is *not*
supposed to be Inuyasha's reincarnation. He's his own man, ppl. Inuyasha is
pretty much a ghost in this fic -- he'll appear in flashbacks and dreams, but
that's about it.
As always, please, please, please review. Despite giving me the warm and
fuzzies, reviews let me know that enough people are reading this to bother continuing
it.
* Yuki is wearing tight black jeans, a black belt and a white baby tee.
Shippo is relating her clothes to attire that he recognizes.
Japanese Words:
ningen - human
inu-hanyou - dog half-demon
kitsune-youkai - fox demon
onna - young girl
onegai - please
