~~~~~~••Part 4••~~~~~~
The atmosphere in the
group was much lighter the next day. Since the tension between Sango and Kouga
was gone and Inuyasha had declared his love for Motoko, well, everything felt
fine and dandy. They still had their old positions as they travelled, but it was
a little more compact this time. And every time the girls would laugh or giggle
about something, two head immediately turned around to look at them, which of
course brought even more giggles from the girls.
Yes, the good mood was
there alright. But Kaede couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being
followed. She used her miko powers to try and find what was making her feel so
paranoid, but she couldn’t find anything. She shook her head and a darkened
tress of hair fell down in front of her face. The grey was beginning to fade and
was replaced by dark colour. She was getting younger for each day that passed.
But why? Although she couldn’t detect any evil magic around her transformation
it still made her feel uncomfortable with the whole situation. Perhaps she would
talk to Miroku about this; he was a monk after all. Perhaps he could have an
idea or two about what was happening to her? “And it all began the day
Inuyasha came back with Motoko-san.” she thought as she looked at her hands.
The aging signs were fading and she knew that with in a week she would look like
she was around thirty years old, she would if this continued. She felt a chill
go down her spine and she snapped out of her thoughts. Demon or no demon, but
someone was watching them. She ordered her horse to pick up the pace a bit and
she rode up next to Inuyasha.
-
Hey Kaede-baba, said Inuyasha and winked at her.
-
Can you smell anything different Inuyasha? she asked with a
quiet voice.
Inuyasha put his nose
into the air and took a few good whiffs and then he shook his head.
-
Nothing more than one human, but he’s far away, said
Inuyasha.
-
How far away?
-
Out of sight range, said Inuyasha. – Why do you ask?
-
I just have this feeling that we are being followed, said
Kaede and straightened up her back.
-
Don’t worry baba, we will protect you old ass, teased
Inuyasha.
Kaede slapped him softly
over the head and then they all laughed.
-
Well, in a week I’ll be at the same age as your mate
Inu-chan, perhaps you should work on cleaning up your language a bit, snorted
Kaede but you could see the smile in her grey eye.
-
Yeah, yeah, whatever.
She fell back to her
place next to Ginta and Hakkaku and they all continued to walk towards the
north.
~~~~~~••○••~~~~~~
Batou was just under a
mile behind them. With his enhanced sight he could see them through the forest.
And when a woman in the middle kept turning her head back towards where he was
he began to wonder if she knew that he was there. She rode up to the guy with
silver hair and she leaned down and Batou knew she was talking to the guy. He
was relieved though. He knew that his friend was not held hostage by the group;
instead it looked as if she enjoyed travelling with them. She was talking to
another woman who had a giant boomerang strapped to her back. That thing made
Batou frowned, what was it used for? Boomerangs was used as weapon by the
natives in Australia, but that thing on her back, she couldn’t possible throw
that thing a meter or two, even less use it as a weapon.
But Batou was about to
get himself a demonstration of how to use a giant boomerang in a battle.
~~~~~~••○••~~~~~~
Inuyasha and Kouga were
the first ones to head first into the battle as they encountered one of Naraku’s
puppets. Then came Ginta and Hakkaku, trying their best to cut tentacles from
the beast. Miroku opened his Kazaana and sucked up the bits and pieces they cut
off. Shippou used his foxfire to burn away the cut off limbs that wasn’t sucked
up by Miroku. Motoko came up next to Inuyasha and put a light kiss on his cheek
before she turned invisible and used brute strength to tear off the things that
was about to grab Kaede’s horse. Kaede fell back in line and she put an arrow up
and concentrated on her miko powers. The arrow head began to glow brightly and
then she released it. It disintegrated several tentacles and she smiled.
Encouraged by her upgrade in miko powers she lined up the next arrow. Sango sat
up on the transformed Kirara and she came up behind Naraku’s puppet and yelled
out:
-
HIRAIKOTSU!!!!
And then she threw her
giant boomerang towards the puppet. And just as it took off the baboon-head it
was hit by the teamed up force from the others and left was a rubble of stones
and a broken wooden doll.
Inuyasha growled
menacingly. This meant that Naraku was on to them and they would have more
trouble in the oncoming future. This was not good. He had hoped that they would
be able to sneak up on the asshole and destroy him. He saw Motoko come out of
her camouflage and he put an arm around her waist and pulled her closer and
sniffed her neck, just to make sure she wasn’t hurt.
-
I’m ok Inuyasha; I am not hurt, said Motoko and smiled as his
breath tickled her skin.
-
I just want to make sure itoshii, he mumbled and kissed her
gently on her lips.
She sighed and let him
hold her until he was sure that she was not hurt.
Sango landed next to
Kouga and he held out his arms and helped her down from Kirara. He pulled her in
for a warm hug as well and she melted into his touch. She found it comfortable
to have someone to hug after a battle.
-
You’re okay? He asked as his right hand cupped her cheek and
his thumb brushed over her skin.
-
Yes, I’m fine. You, you didn’t get hurt did you?
-
Nhaa, it would take a lot more than a mere puppet to hurt me,
he said cockily.
Sango sighed and rose to
her toes and kissed him on his nose.
-
You are a cocky bastard, you know that right? she teased him.
-
Yeah, they all tell me that.
And then he kissed her
with heated passion. His tongue slid into her mouth and he danced with hers
until she was moaning. Her scent spiked around them and Kouga growled and pulled
back.
-
Whoo, you’re dangerous Sango-chan, Kouga whispered as he
rubbed his nose against hers.
-
You’re not so safe either Kouga-kun, mumbled Sango and tried
to get her head cleared again.
They laughed and pulled
apart a bit. Kouga still held his arm around her shoulders and they walked back
to the others. Shippou was telling Kaede that her arrows looked just the same as
Kagome had in the past. Somehow her rejuvenation also gave strength to her miko
powers. And that was not a bad thing.
But in the middle of this
Kaede could feel the presence again, and this time it was closer. Kouga and
Inuyasha nodded when she told them this. They used their noses to detect where
the pursuer was hiding and then they ran towards him. He didn’t stand a chance
of escaping once they used their demonic speed.
~~~~~~••○••~~~~~~
Batou couldn’t believe
his cyborg eyes. The woman actually threw that giant boomerang as if it was made
out of paper and she had caught just as easily. He was amazed and confused, all
at the same time. He also had been forced to rethink his opinion about living
breathing demons. Because the thing they had fought had not been a mechanical
monster, it had been real. He shook his head and looked up again, just to see
two fists coming up and slam in right in the face. He tumbled backwards a few
feet before he regained his balance. He quickly got into battle stance but his
feet were swept away and he landed on his butt.
-
Who are you? asked the man with ice blue eyes and black hair.
-
Why are you following us? asked the man with silver hair.
Batou snorted and got up
on his feet and brushed off his clothes a bit before looking at them again.
-
The name’s Batou and I’m here because my friend is here, said
Batou.
-
Your friend? Who is your friend?
-
Major Kusanagi is my friend. I’ve searching for since I lost
contact with her. And followed her here and now I get punched in the face by two
clowns, mumbled Batou as he rubbed his aching face.
-
Clowns? Have you looked yourself in the mirror lately you
bastard?! growled Inuyasha. – And what do you want with my mate?
-
Mate? Hmpf, this is a savage country indeed, said Batou and
made a grumpy face.
By now the others had
joined and Motoko gaped when she recognized her partner and friend. She walked
over to him and she had to touch him in order to confirm that he was really
there.
Kaede kept her distance.
“So this is the man who have been following us… he is Motoko-san’s friend, a
man from her time. His eyes are not ordinary eyes, so is he similar inside the
body as Motoko-san?” she wondered as she stared at him. He was tall, he
stood at least a head taller than Inuyasha. His hair was cut very short and he
was built like a very hard working man. Suddenly she felt a blush coming on and
she looked away. Her heart was picking up its pace and she felt her hands shake
a bit. “What is the matter with me?” she asked as she swallowed hard and
turned back to look at him again. She realized that he was here to take
Motoko-san back home. She sighed, that was not the thing to say now that
Inuyasha had found her to be his mate. He would not let her go with out a fight.
Motoko tried to talk to
them, but they didn’t listen. She knew that Inuyasha was a stubborn person, a
very stubborn person and Batou; well her partner could be rather thick-headed
and stubborn as well. They weren’t going to back down neither of them. She
sighed and stepped back and let them fight. She was not going back home, but
that didn’t get through to Batou at the moment.
Inuyasha growled at the
bug-eyed man in front of him. Since he had no sword, Inuyasha didn’t draw the
Tessaiga either. This was a fist on fist fight. And he would not let anyone take
his love away from him. And definitively not a guy with bug-eyes. He heard
Motoko’s voice calling out to him not to kill her friend.
-
Alright, but I will kick his sorry ass for trying to take you
away from me, said Inuyasha with a smirk.
But it was a smirk that
soon was punched out of his face. A heavy blow came from Batou and Inuyasha flew
backwards. He snarled and wiped blood from his split lip. There was no ordinary
human strength behind that blow. He was probably built just like Motoko
concluded Inuyasha and had to rethink his strategy. “But that also means that
I don’t have to pull my punches either.” he thought and smiled wickedly.
“Ready or not bastard, here I come.”
Batou oofed as he was
kicked in the stomach by the red clothed figure. And it was a hard blow that
made him slide backwards before his feet got stuck in some roots and he tumbled
over. But he manage to land gracefully, or as gracefully as a man in his size
could. And he charged forward again, his right hand balled into a fist. They
clashed together again and he was sure that he would have knocked out the white
haired boy with puppy ears, but the boy just shrugged and then he was at it
again. “Gods, this boy is strong, he’s stronger than me.” thought Batou
as he ducked for another blow.
They continued their
fighting until Kaede felt that it was enough. The large man was obviously not
the enemy, only a man that was looking after his friend. But since Motoko stayed
here with them with her own free will, there was no need to fight. Not really.
-
THAT IS ENOUGH!!
she called out and her voice held a powerful energy that echoed through the
forest.
-
Kaede-sama? Sango’s voice was worried.
-
Its ok Sango, smiled Kaede and winked at the nervous taijya.
The two fighters stopped
dead in their tracks as Kaede’s voice called out to them. Batou’s head turned to
look at the source of that powerful voice. It was the woman he had seen earlier,
this was the woman whom had detected his presence. He was impressed. He
straightened his back and looked more closely at her. A black patch was covering
her left eye. Her hair was a middle thing between steel grey and black. His
scanner told him that she was in some sort of transformation. It was almost as
she was having a cell- and blood transfusion right now. “Very strange, I can
see her cells rejuvenate but there are no technologies here that can do it.”
He took a step closer as she came down from the horse. She wore the traditional
outfit of a priestess of the old time.
-
I demand that you stop this useless fighting. Inuyasha, you
do not have to worry, your mate will not be taken away from you, said Kaede and
looked at Inuyasha who blushed like a young boy under her scolding eye. And then
she turned and looked at Batou. – And you, you have no right to take away Motoko
if she wants to stay here. And if you insist anyway on trying to take her away I
will the one dealing with you.
Batou sweat-dropped at
her threat and he swallowed hard. “Why do I get the feeling I just got
scolded by my grandmother?” He bowed and stepped down from the fight.
Somehow he didn’t want to get on her bad side, he had a feeling it would hurt
more than a kick in the face from dog-boy.
Everyone took a breath of
relief as the two fighters nodded to each other. Kouga picked up Sango and
placed her on his back, Ginta and Hakkaku took Shippou with them and began to
walk next to Kouga and Sango. They had to find a place to camp and it didn’t
look like Inuyasha was going to be up to the task yet. The hanyou was still
glaring angrily at the newcomer and he held a possessive grip around Motoko’s
waist, as if yelling ‘SHE’S MINE!’. Kaede followed them although she
wanted to stay. But this was something they had to solve on their own without
her interference.
Batou sighed and sat down
on a log. He dragged his finger through his short hair and looked at his
partner.
-
So, what the fuck happens now major? he asked.
-
I’m staying here Batou. I love Inuyasha and I will stay with
him, said Motoko with a soft voice and sat down next to him. She glared at
Inuyasha when he growled and her hanyou was silenced.
-
But what besides that is keeping you here major?
-
Do I need more?
He sighed and shook his
head. No, perhaps she didn’t. But what about him? What the hell was he supposed
to do in a world that existed half a millennia before his time?
-
So what is left for me? asked Batou and sounded defeated.
-
Hmpf, you’re strong enough, join our group and fight against
Naraku, said Inuyasha and unfolded his arms and held out his hand to Motoko who
took it. He pulled her up on her feet and placed an arm around her waist.
-
Naraku?
-
An asshole waiting to be kicked of this earth, said Inuyasha.
-
Is he anything like the monster you fought earlier? asked
Batou.
-
That was one of his puppets, said Motoko with soft voice. –
We are searching for the monster behind the puppet.
-
Do I get to fight?
-
Yeah, you get to fight alright. Now come on before the others
eat up all our food, said Inuyasha with a smirk and pulled Motoko with him
towards the direction where the others had gone to.
“Well, as long as I
get to fight I’m happy.” he
thought and strolled behind them. But it was not the fighting that had him
persuaded to stay with the group. It was the voice of that woman, the one-eyed
priestess. But he was relieved to know that Kusanagi was safe and the dog-boy
would make sure that she was not hurt. He could see it now, but it took him a
few punches in the face to understand that.
On the way to where the
rest of the group had set up camp, Motoko filled him in on the goal of their
journey. She also told him that she was changing and there might be a chance
that he could change as well. Batou was stunned to hear that her body was acting
just like a human body and yet she could use her cyborg-abilities. That spoke
against everything he had been taught and knew about. And magic, there was no
such things as magic. But Motoko told him about Kaede’s sprit arrows and how
little Shippou made a blue fire out of seemingly nothing. “Batou, you have
placed your ass in a world filled with demons, magic and monsters. Just accept
the facts that you are in for it now.” He rubbed the bridge on his nose and
groaned as they entered a clearing where the others had a fire going. The smell
of roasted fish hit his nose and his mouth watered. He was hungry.
He was welcomed by the
others and he learned their names. The woman with the giant boomerang was Sango,
she was a demon slayer. He found it odd that she would travel with demons and
her companion was a fire cat demon. But he said nothing about it. Then there was
the black haired young man with piercing blue eyes who had been with Inuyasha
and punched him in the face. His name was Kouga and was a wolf demon. His two
brothers who looked like Sid Vicious partners were named Ginta and Hakkaku. And
there was this cute little red haired thing, that was Shippou, the fox demon. He
showed Batou how he made his fox fire and the large man was impressed by the
strength of the fire. And there was the holy man Miroku with a black hole in his
hand. Now that was something that made Batou doubt, until he got a demonstration
of course. “What in all the Gods name…. that is horrible.” He thought as
the monk closed the hole with the help of his cover and prayer-beads.
And then he was presented
to Kaede, the miko who carried the incomplete jewel, the Shikon no Tama. Now he
just had to know if his scanners were still working correctly.
-
Kaede-sama, you know by the looks of me, that I am no
ordinary human. I am much like Motoko, only that I still have many pieces of my
original body left. But my eyes are not human, and I can see things that
ordinary humans can not. And now my eyes are telling me that you are
rejuvenating. Tell me if this is true, please, asked Batou and looked at her
intensely.
-
Your eyes do not deceive you Batou-san, I am changing. It
began the same day when Motoko-san came through the magic well. I am, through
some kind of magic, turning younger for each day that passes, said Kaede and she
felt her stomach make some strange flips.
“Magic again…. no,
there has to be a natural explanation to this.”
thought Batou and refused to acknowledge the fact that magic was a part of the
every day life in this era. He could take the monsters and demons, but magic
that would transform a old woman into a spiritual woman with sparkling youth,
that was just too much for him.
Shippou whispered to
Inuyasha that he wanted to talk to him in private. The hanyou nodded and kissed
Motoko on her cheek and said that they just were going to have a
‘man-to-man-talk’. Motoko nodded and moved to sit on her own next to Kaede.
Inuyasha put Shippou on
his shoulder and took a few giant leaps into the dark forest and sat down on a
high branch. The fox sat down on Inuyasha’s knee instead and looked at his
father.
-
Otousan, Kaede is acting strange, said Shippou, getting
straight at the point.
-
He, he, so you have noticed it as well my little pup. Well, I
don’t think we should worry too much. Since she’s getting younger her body will
call out for her to find a suitable mate, just as it will make you do once you
get to that point, said Inuyasha and rustled the hair on Shippou’s head.
-
Yeah, but she likes that new guy, Batou!
-
He was Motoko’s partner on the other side of the well, and
he’s strong Shippou. I think he will prove to be a good ally. And we shouldn’t
interfere if Obaasan wants to take him as a mate.
Shippou giggled and
nodded.
-
And we should find another suffix for her soon, she’s getting
too young to be our grandmother Otousan, said Shippou and let Inuyasha pick him
up and be cradled in his arms.
-
You’re right pup… but for now… we can always tease her a bit.
Come on, we don’t want to miss the grilled fish, said Inuyasha and leaped back
to the camp.
Shippou grinned as they
sat down and he scurried down to grab one of the fish-sticks and devoured it.
Inuyasha looked around the camp and felt the energy had turned to be that of a
friendship. “All in a days work.” He thought and was given a fish-stick
by Motoko. He kissed her and mouthed a thank you to her.
When the time for
sleeping came, Batou sat down not far away from Kaede. She told him to have
sweet dreams and he slightly wondered if he should tell her that it would be
sweet dreams if she was in them, but he held his mouth shut and just told her to
get a good night’s sleep.
