A Promise Kept

A/N- Hope you're all enjoying them so far!! Errr...as much as deathfics can be enjoyed anyway...here's the next one. It reveals the secret to Miroku's sudden death, as well as dealing with Sango's loss of everyone she ever loved. Poor girl. The Sango fans fought *hard* to keep her alive...but eventually we got them. **wink**

Warning: Character suicide and much ANGST.
*************************

Sango knelt over her brother's dead body, sobbing her heart out. The Shikon shard in her hand glowed weakly as she set it on the ground and slowly hauled herself to her feet.

"Miroku..." she whispered. "Miroku...he's dead..." She frowned when she received no answer, and a sharp bolt of fear lanced through her stomach. "Mi..Miroku?" She sent up a brief prayer, and slowly turned, dreading what she would see.

Miroku lay sprawled on the floor where he had fallen, limbs tangled in yards of purple and black. Sango felt a tortured cry leave her throat as she rushed to his side. He wasn't breathing. She saw that his right palm was uncovered. With a gasp, she picked it up and winced at the burning temperature of it. His palm was free of the curse, although it was swollen horribly and streaked a violent and infected pinkish purple. She stroked over the new skin softly and sniffled as more tears made their way out of her eyes.

"You sucked him in, didn't you? And...and it killed you. Poisoned your body, to have such evil inside...Oh...Miroku..." She leaned down hesitantly, her heart breaking, and placed a chaste kiss on his lips.

"Miroku, I'm so sorry....that we never had a chance." Everyone was gone. She was the last of the group searching for the jewel. Naraku was dead. This should be a time of celebration! But...everyone was dead...everyone. Kohaku, Miroku, her dear Kirara...Kagome, Shippou....even Inuyasha, killed by his former undead enemies. Sango's eyes fell on her sword by the body of her dead brother. She had a promise to fulfill. She had sworn she wouldn't let Kohaku be alone for long. Looking back at Miroku, she smiled through her tears.

"Soon, love...we'll be together again." She grabbed ahold of Miroku's body and lugged the dead monk over to her brother's body. Taking up her sword, she sat in between the two boys she had loved more than any other. Tears spilled from her eyes.

"Kagome, Inuyasha, Shippou...we've won...although I'm sure Miroku's already told you." She sniffled, wiping her eyes on her sleeve. "I'm coming to join you. I'll be there in a minute. Save me a place, okay?" She held the sword out from her body, angled up, and taking a deep breath, looked one last time at Miroku and Kohaku, and thrust her body against it.

It took all her remaining strength, and it hurt terribly, but next to the pain in her heart, it was nothing. In through her stomach and up...the blood spurting all over her already soaked hands. She felt the tip graze against bone, her own bone, and shuddered, coughing up more of the lifegiving fluid. Her eyelids drooped. Suddenly she felt tired. Exhausted. Soft voices that sounded achingly familiar were calling to her. Her hand fell away from the sword hilt and her head hit the floor as she went to join them.
