4. Ways and Means
Although I still limped a bit, the hole in my leg had essentially closed. I looked around at the faces of my family assembled around the dinner table. They looked at me with curiosity as I paced nervously back and forth, the hanyou leaning against the wall behind me providing moral support. “I guess you’re all wondering why we’re here.”
Mama and Souta exchanged a look I couldn’t identify, then simply nodded slowly. Jiichan kept glancing out the window as though he wanted to be anywhere but there. “I guess it’s time for me to explain. I’m sorry, Mama--I know that you were hoping I’d someday have some kind of great career, but that’s not going to happen. I’m leaving school. Not right this minute--there are some things I want to do first--but very soon. I’ll be taking as many different textbooks as I can when I go. I figure that I’ve got enough of a general background that I’ll be able to teach myself anything else I need to know.”
I think Mama sort of understood, but Souta didn’t. “What do you mean, nee-san?”
Although they hadn’t said anything, I could see the same question in the eyes of the rest of my family. Moving carefully to my silver-haired companion, I stood next to him while he placed a hand at the small of my back to offer his silent support. “Inuyasha has asked me to be his mate, and I’ve agreed. Naturally, we’ll be living in his world, but I’ll be able to travel back for visits now and again. That’s why I’m taking all those books with me--I want to be able to teach our family, when we have one.”
I looked from one to the other, reading their reactions. Souta was thrilled. No surprise there--he’d always thought of the hanyou as the big brother he’d never had. I wasn’t too sure about Mama’s reaction: she was smiling, but I thought I could see the glimmer of tears starting to form in her eyes. Jiichan was another matter entirely. Even though he’d gotten rather used to having someone who was part youkai around, he wasn’t about to let this go unchallenged. “Absolutely not!” he roared, pulling out a couple of his totally useless seals and flinging them at Inuyasha. “Kagome is the daughter of a shrine family--for her to be consorting with demons is completely unacceptable! I forbid--”
That was the last straw! Even though I hadn’t always believed the things he’d told me, I had always respected Jiichan. Maybe that’s why it was so hard for me to interrupt. “Jiichan!” I yelled. “This is my life, and I’ll live it the way I want! First of all,” I said, really getting up a head of steam now, “Inuyasha is not a demon. He’s hanyou, which means that he’s as much human as he is youkai. Second, I’m not ‘consorting’ with anybody! I’m going to be his mate--that’s just like being married in this world. Third,” I said, my voice dropping to almost a growl, “If you even think of trying to stop me, I’ll disappear and you’ll never see me again--and you know I can do it. Finally,” and my expression softened a little at this point, “I don’t really have any choice, because I love him.”
Jiichan shifted his attention from me to the hanyou standing at my side. “What do you have to say about all this?”
To my complete and utter surprise, my future mate flashed a toothy grin at the old man. “Not a damn thing, Jiji. I think that Kagome said it all.”
I was even more surprised when my grandfather cracked a huge grin and threw his arms around us. At that point, seeing that things were apparently resolved, Mama stood up and joined us. “You’ll be getting married here before you go, right?”
We simply looked at each other. Personally, I didn’t really care at all, but I could see that the ceremony meant quite a lot to my mother. We exchanged a moment of a sort of wordless communication, then he nodded. “Sure. We can do that if you’d like. When do you want to set it up?”
Mama got this kind of scary vague look in her eyes, as though she had gone off to some other dimension. “It’ll probably take a few weeks to arrange. After all, this is a family matter, and we should make certain that everybody is invited.”
The hanyou’s normally pale skin whitened further. “Everybody--?”
Mama reached out a hand to lightly touch his shoulder. “Don’t worry so, dear. I’m not planning anything very big--just family and a few close friends. No more than seventy-five or a hundred people.”
I could almost feel the panic bubbling up in my fiancé. ‘Gods, I love the sound of that!’ I thought as I gripped his arm in what I hoped was a reassuring manner. “Don’t worry, love,” I whispered. “Even though quite a lot of people will get invited, many of them won’t come, either because they’re not really that close to the family, or because they live too far away to make the trip easily, or because they don’t have enough notice to change plans they’ve already made.” I turned back to my family with a brilliant smile. “I think I’d better take him back upstairs. This has all been quite a shock, and it’s going to take me a little time to explain everything.”
*
“What was all that down there?” I had never seen anything like Jiichan’s performance before, and I couldn’t understand how somebody I’d known all my life could have acted that way.
The hanyou sitting on the bed next to me smirked. “The old geezer is a lot brighter than I gave him credit for. That was a lot like what usually happens when youkai decide to become mates--the outsider male is challenged by the male leader of the female’s group. When he gave you all that crap, that’s sort of what he was doing. Only it was a different kind of test than the ones I’ve heard about before--he was testing both of us.”
That was something I hadn’t considered. “What kind of testing are you talking about?”
He shrugged. “The tests were different for each of us. He was testing you for your level of commitment. I think he wanted to make sure that you weren’t going to throw your life away for nothing. He was testing me for something entirely different. Most male youkai tend to dominate their mates. When I told him that I didn’t have anything else to add to your little speech, that seemed to convince him that I wasn’t planning on going down that particular road.”
I nodded slowly. Everything seemed to make perfect sense now that he had explained it to me. “Are you okay with all this? I know Mama can get a little carried away sometimes.”
“Don’t worry about it. How complicated can it be?”
I didn’t even want to think of answering: my cousin had gotten married about a year earlier, and it had taken months of planning and preparation, not to mention all of her savings, to arrange. Of course, this wasn’t going to be anywhere near as elaborate as that had been--she had married into one of the most prominent families in this part of the country, after all--but the problems inherent in the diverse nature of those involved would more than make up for it. “I’m sure Mama will try to keep things as simple as possible.”
Even I didn’t find that answer especially reassuring.
