Chapter Four
Kagome was glad to see the young man leave. It felt nice knowing that Hojo had been worried about her. Naturally, his concern stemmed from her being the one to find the burning man. He'd been concerned about her state of mind. The shock had already worn off but despair remained. He held her as the tears fell for the fallen man. Not only did she cry for Takenaka but for the lives that had been lost centuries ago. She'd thought that Inuyasha could rest peacefully knowing that Naraku had been destroyed. Now the creature was back, hunting her again. Had they all died in vain? The only person she had to count on now was Sango. They were both decent fighters but could they handle this challenge?
As much as she wanted to confide in Hojo something kept her silent. That was the special part of herself she only wanted to share with that someone special, if she ever found him. He was a great friend and had been there for her since everything began. Why couldn't she see him as anything more than just a friend? He could never understand who she was. Her life was about to be turned upside down again. It was best to keep everyone away so they didn't get hurt.
Now that she'd sent Hojo on his way home it was time to call on an old ally. Right before she'd leapt through the well he'd appeared. Outside he showed no feelings over the loss of his brother. Nor anger at not being there for Naraku's demise. Kagome was sure he'd come for the fang in her possession. Instead of acting he bowed before them and spoke, "Call if you ever need my assistance." Then placed in her hand was a whistle. At the time she'd smiled, it had looked like a dog whistle. Almost fitting considering who'd just handed it over. It had been stored with Inuyasha's fang, in the back of her closet. Now it was time to take both out, time to prepare.
Sango was holding onto the strange whistle, shaped much like running dog. Neither could feel a youkai presence strong enough to be his but they could only pray. Pray that he was alive and would hear their plea for help. There was no telling how much he'd changed in five centuries. He'd been an honorable youkai, a true Lord. If he heard he'd come, he had to. Kagome stepped in place beside her friend, "Go ahead."
Sango placed the tip of the contraption between her lips. It tasted only of mint, weird. Taking a deep breath she blew long and hard into the pipe. No sound was being emitted but a strange pulse began. It continued long after the taijiya stopped blowing. She placed it into her pocket and looked around. "Let's hope that he'll come and keep his promise. I got a bad feeling about all this. Do you think he'll follow Souta?"
Kagome shook her head in denial. As they stood there her brother was already on a plane to meet with her mother. She'd called and filled them in on the happenings. Her mother was frantic with worry but knew what had to be done. If Souta or them returned they'd be in danger. Kagome wouldn't be able to bare it if any of them were to be harmed. Not for her! Sango felt the same way, this was their fight. "If he's coming it shouldn't take long. Let's get ready, knowing him we'll start hunting soon."
Sango nodded, that was fine with her. Naraku had taken everything from her in the past. First her father and villagers, then Kohaku and Miroku. Fate had left her Kagome, she thanked the gods everyday. It felt wonderful wearing her old tiajiya uniform, like coming home after a long journey. Kagome was sporting the traditional miko clothing. Once she had hated to wear the clothing so much like Kikyou's but now wore it with pride. They were who destiny chose them to be; a miko and a tiajiya.
Keiko rolled over in her small twin bed feeling the loneliness that usually came in the morning. The feeling confused her as much as it saddened her. She had her parents, family, friends and Yusuke. Why was there a large hole in her life? Her mind said her life was perfect, her heart said something was missing. What more could there be for her? A job? She was in college, already the top of her class.
After Yusuke had returned life had gone back to normal, almost. There had been some changes in him that she couldn't deny. His attitude was different, he was no longer the school thug. A maturity had settled over his once aloof personality. This Raizen had died, his youkai father she'd been told. In those two years, her Yusuke had changed. But nothing had changed in their relationship and that's what was bothering her. They were planning on marriage soon but he'd yet to take their relationship to the next level. He barely even kissed her anymore.
Having grown up as best friends heading straight into the dating might not have been for the best. It was like he was having a hard time heading in that direction. It couldn't be that he found her unattractive, she hoped not. There were plenty of males at school that thought her to be pretty. It gave her doubts on if they were meant to be together. The one night he'd stayed with her, not once had he made a move. Not that she was that kind of girl but didn't he want her? She wasn't a complete prude nor easy. Yet, it left her doubting the desire they both had for eachother. She knew some of their problems were her doing. That day at the mall she'd taken everything a bit too far. The day had started bad for them both. While strolling to the movies after his late arrival she'd tried to hold his hand. He'd never been too keen on showing affection in public. Couples had walked past them on the way to the eatery smiling and holding hands; very much in love with each other. When she'd gone for his hand there hadn't been much contact. It felt like she was holding the hand of a family member so she wouldn't get lost. The yelling had started when she'd seen him glance over at the girl sitting at the table next to them. Could she help but not be angry at the display? The more she thought about it Yusuke probably hadn't even been aware of his appraisal.
Having the girl stand up and scream at her had been more than embarrassing. It made her feel stupid and selfish. The words had been true, she was lucky to have Yusuke. That girl had such a sad look in her eyes, the look of a lost love. There she was bitching about Yusuke being late. Half the time she started an arguement just to get some type of emotion out of him. The guy was still emotionally constipated when it came to anyone he cared about. Except when he got pissed off, then he loved to express himself.
Dawn would be coming soon. Another night wasted laying awake and thinking about Yusuke. As much as she loved him she wondered if she was happy. Two years she'd waited for him to return. But had her Yusuke returned or someone else? After spending time with him she wasn't sure anymore. What made her heart plummet was a major concern. Would they last as a couple? More importantly, how come the thought of them breaking up didn't make her cry?
Kagome jerked out of sleep feeling the strong presence closing in. Scrambling to her feet she noticed Sango already standing at attention. Dawn had barely ascended bringing the new day. Something or someone was approaching fast, right for the shrine. Normally she'd be extremely nervous about the situation but her senses calmed her. There was no doubt who was coming to them. The feeling soothed her hectic emotions enough to run a hand through her ragged hair. She needed to get it together already.
Sango smirked seeing Kagome trying to make herself presentable. It was a waste of time to even bother. Sesshoumaru wouldn't notice if her hair was perfectly styled or shaved bald. Five centuries had passed for the lord but she doubted his views on taking a human lover had changed that much. Not that Kagome would want the youkai's attention, it was more of a reflex on the miko's part. Sango opened the door feeling the presence stop outside in the yard. "Let's go say hello."
Sesshoumaru waited patiently at the dwelling. How he hated to come to the human world. Things had changed too much for his liking. Only a handful of the youkai population still remained, too few. He no longer hated or despised their kind but that didn't mean he wanted to live with them. Instead after the death of Rin he choose to live in the Makai. It hadn't bothered him when the border had been placed. His lands were no longer his own, the Western Lands were gone. Him and Jaken had lived in solitude deep in the Makai. He'd heard rumors pass throughout the centuries of those seeking power. The mighty Raizen he'd met on one occasion, the disfigured Mukuro he'd seen from a distance and then the blind Yomi. The only one worth sparing a glance at had been Raizen. Then the man hadn't wanted anything but to say a brief hello. It was just as well, he hadn't the urge to fight a meaningless battle. Not with a man that was surely starving himself.
So the centuries had passed bringing news of the three kings. Still he'd stayed in his small estate, content to be left alone. Recently, news of Raizen's death to be followed by some fool tournament. He'd heard it all through Jaken. If anything the imp was good at finding out the latest gossip, better than most females. Seemed the Makai had a new king, a fat useless king. It was pathetic how they chose a ruler. Not that the former Lord of the WesternLands would ever bow down to him.
He'd been sleeping peacefully when the summons had reached him. At first he'd been confused about the feeling. It took several minutes to remember that he'd given his crest to that miko. Centuries had passed since he'd seen the two human females. At the time he'd had to respect what they'd done. The girl had destroyed a creature he himself couldn't. Most humans were weak and capable of nothing. Those two had earned his respect and trust back then. Neither one had ever feared him, each time he appeared. Most humans cowered in his presence, as they should.
He'd never known what time she'd been from, now he knew. It explained the weird behavior and clothing. The bigger question was why had she called to him? If she needed help getting a cat out of a tree, he'd kill her. His senses picked several youkai auras in the city but nothing he'd be concerned with. So why was she bothering him? He'd given his word so if she needed help he'd comply. He waited patiently until the door opened and the two women stepped out. "Why are you still alive?"
"Nice to see you too." Kagome frowned at the youkai. He hadn't changed at all, the ass. What she wouldn't do to still look young in five years, much less five hundred. The way her life was going she'd be grey headed by next month. Though she had to give it to him he still looked perfect. She was relieved that he'd shown up as promised. Only someone as noble as he would keep their word after so long. Without waiting for his response she got to the point. He listened to every word as she rambled on about who they believed to be Naraku. His face didn't show any emotions as they both spoke.
"Are you certain? Who would have the power to revive one so long dead? The only cast-off that survived was the empty child. His soul would have been purified along with the jewel." Sesshoumaru followed the girls into the small dwelling and frowned. Humans needed so many accessories to keep themselves comfortable. One reason he frowned upon the one king known as Yomi. The fool was just as obsessed with technology. All he needed to see to his needs was Jaken. He'd have all the facts before getting involved with the two females.
Kagome nodded, "That'd be Kanna that survived. I guess we all thought she was no threat since she was nothing but a worthless puppet without Naraku pulling her strings. Who's to say how powerful she became in the last five centuries. Besides the man we saw was human." All three sat down at the kitchen table before she continued. She needed a strong cup of coffee or would end up falling back asleep. Taking a sip of the cup Sango passed her way she glanced back at Sesshoumaru. "We have been working on a theory. We know that Kanna was able to mess with souls because of her mirror. Naraku began life as Onigumo, a human. It wasn't until he'd been burned that he offered up his soul to youkai in order to get the jewel. So even if his body became that of a youkai the soul was originally human. If the soul was purified, then it was wiped clean of all evil. We believe that he was reincarnated in this era. None of us saw Onigumo while he was human."
"Then if he is human, why did you bother calling me? You humans kill each other everyday. My assistance isn't needed here, just so you can kill what you believe is his reincarnation." Sesshoumaru wasn't interested in reincarnations, they weren't the same thing. The miko should know that first hand. A human wasn't worth his time or effort. Let the miko run the man over with one of those cars, problem solved. He should have known better than to give her his crest.
"I don't think it is his reincarnation. Hear us out please." Sango interrupted the man ignoring his slight scowl. "A reincarnation isn't born with memories of their former life. Kagome was Kikyou's yet she had no actual memories of her former life. Even if the soul remembers everything, it usually doesn't make the memories clear. What I'm saying is there is noway this reincarnation would remember Kagome enough to seek revenge or me. This man left Naraku's mark for us to see. We think somehow Kanna found the reincarnation and brought back the part of the soul that is Naraku. If this guy was living his life out in this time then he no longer is. The man that had been reborn is lost now. Naraku is back and he's pissed."
Sesshoumaru listened to their words and didn't appear to be any lies. They truelly believed that Naraku was back haunting them. Yet should he believe it? Was he willing to give up his life of solitude to become involved with them again? His fool brother had done so but could he? Inuyasha had earned his respect upon mastering the Tetsusaiga. He'd never told his brother that and part of him regretted it. "This Sesshoumaru needs time to think about everything you've said. I shall return before the sun sets on this day." Their disappointment was obvious when he stood up and began walking out the house. Neither tried to stop him from leaving. He frowned when he opened the door, letting himself back out into the large yard. Anger flared seeing the present left twenty feet away from him.
He scowled and scanned the area but found nothing. The two girls must have felt his aura flare because they came running up behind him. The miko screamed before dropping to her knees. Not that he could blame her considering the relationship she'd shared with his brother. The tree was something he'd never forget, The Goshinboku. The tree in which his brother had been pinned to for fifty years. The wind blew letting the face of the young boy now pinned to its trunk be seen. Sesshoumaru walked over noticing that he looked exactly like Inuyasha had in his human form. Someone had dressed him all in red, trying to match the clothing of the hanyou. There was no outward sign as to what caused the death but there was no breath left in the body. A single arrow was holding the prone form against the trunk. Clawed fingers reached out to snatch the paper pinned to the shirt. The corner crushed in his palm as he read the message meant for him. 'Embrace your brother as he meets the same fate in this life because revival is not an option.'
Sango went down to comfort Kagome as Sesshoumaru walked over. The inuyoukai didn't look too happy with his find. The usual mask of indifference was gone replaced by one of rage. If Sango hadn't known that it wasn't directed at them she'd be tempted to run inside and lock the door. He stood in front of the fallen miko before speaking. "I need no more time to consider. Naraku or a reincarnation, I will see that he dies by my hands for mocking the death of Inuyasha. You two will have my protection until death."
