She slowly forced them open to take in a ceiling that was certainly not her own. First it was far too large and her little wobbling fan was nowhere in sight. She tensed up and looked over to the right, rich draperies hung before a window that was larger than her bed. Nope. Definitely not home. She sat up, the linens falling to her lap and she realized. She had no clothes on. “What the hell?” she whispered to herself. Dread and heavy terror crept into her. She forced herself to calm down. There were two possibilities. One, she’d had too much to drink and gone home with someone. This was unlikely because she drank like a fish and rarely got more than a light buzz and she wasn’t in the habit of such things. The second was more sinister. She had been taken. A flash of silver hair entered her memory then and she shivered. She rose from that large soft bed, looked at the costly furnishing and promptly began looking for clothing, anything to cover herself. A ten minute utterly fruitless search left her wrapping that long bed sheet around herself. She peered out the window, dismayed to find herself too high above the ground to jump for it. There were only three doors here, one was a bathroom, one was a large closet, which mean the other would lead her outside. She tried the knob, happy that it was not locked and slowly pulled it open. She peered down the long, empty corridor. On silent feet, she creapt to the thick prnate banister to find that the space below was open and seemed empty as well. She headed for the stairs, eyes casting around fearfully. She didn’t know where she was or how she had gotten there but she had a bad feeling. She had to get out. She rushed towards the stairs and was nearly to the wide casing that led double doors framed by long windows. Just beyond them… outside! Freedom. She was just reaching for them when she was pulled back against a hard body, “You aren’t leaving.” A voice breathed near her ear. A man’s voice. Lilian felt her heart stop and lodge in her throat. “Stop struggling” he bit out, “You wouldn’t make it a day out there and I have orders.” His words filling her with a cold, seeping dread. She struggled again, her efforts renewed in his powerful grip. He merely sighed and caught both her wrists in his palm above her head. He slowly turned her in his grip. He shoved her back against the wall as he did so. She panted in her growing panic, becoming lightheaded and wishing heavily for freedom. Violet eyes opened wide. It was him! The silver hair, the fox ears. He had danced with Esbet! Oh God! Esbet! “Where is she?” she demanded, feeling her throat constrict. Youko cocked his head in question, “Ah, you mean your friend. At home, safe in her bed” he replied. Lilian narrowed her eyes and surged forward, only to be pressed more firmly to the unforgiving wall. “You lie” she spat at him. Youko considered himself a patient enough fellow, but her insult grated on his nerves. “I have no cause to lie” he informed her tightly, “Since my word is near law to lesser beings like you”. His tone was impressively cool. Her eyes moved over his face, “Lesser beings” she mocked. His silver ears pressed back into his hair and he growled at her, baring his fangs. She blinked, then laughed, “You really need to get a life” she told him, “Balls over pal, no more costumes”. Youko blinked. So there was the problem, she actually believed she was talking to another human. He chuckled and stepped back from her, nodding his head towards the stairs, “Go on then” he told her, “Run”. Run she did, bolting for the stairs like lightning. He chuckled again and reached into his hair, withdrawing a small, shiny seed. With just a nudge of his power, the seed blossomed into a large plant with smooth vines. She made a graceful leap art the top of the stairs, intending to take them two at a time if she didn’t kill herself in the process. Said vines caught her in midair and pulled her back to suspend her before him once more. She was pale, taking in what was happening. She was losing it, she decided. That was the only logical explanation for all of this. Either that or she was dreaming. He tightened the vines just enough to hurt her and she dismissed that theory. Dreams didn’t hurt, not like this. “Had enough?” he asked her, “Ready to listen?”. What choice did she have? She nodded, and the vines loosened fractionally. She sucked in a deep breath and eyed him warily. Youko considered her for a long moment. She was frightened; her racing heartbeat told him that. She was close to tears, the scent of salt already heavy in his nose. She was wide eyed and tense, her black hair tumbling around her shoulders in riotous curls. Her flesh was so pale that he could see the faint blue veins in her throat. He drew closer and she flinched. “I won’t harm you” he soothed, “I just want you to listen. I can release you, take you downstairs, feed you and explain everything, answer your questions. Or I can leave you right here, with no chance to ask what hunts you”. His golden eyes bored into hers. The violet orbs were dilated. “Choose”. She nodded again, “Le… let me down” she whispered. Youko smirked, “Your word that you will not run, for it will do you no good”. She cursed, “Fine! Just let me down ok? I’ll listen, just get these creepy things off me”. He chuckled and brought his face very close to hers, “One day you’ll like this particular plant” he promised. Before she could ask what he meant, the vines unraveled and she was set on her feet again. Youko took in her state of dress and smiled, “Oh, he’s going to love this” he mused. Then he took her arm and led her down the stairs. Lilian’s mind was a whirlwind of activity, how could she evade him, how could she get free? She’d promised not to run, but damn it, he was a kidnapper! You didn’t have to tell them the truth. Right? His grip reminded her that he was male. Stronger, faster, geared for the chase. She’d have to play it safe and wait for a better opportunity. Besides, this guy had just sicked a plant on her. A plant! Normal people didn’t do that kind of thing. Of course normal people didn’t have animal ears, fangs and growl. At least not in her scene anyway. She glanced down at his large hand wrapped so easily about her arm, yup, claws too. Things just got better and better. Youko could tell that her mind was working feverishly but her expression was for the most part calm. More calm than he would have expected it to be given the circumstances. She was a female and therefore highly unpredictable….even to one of his advanced level. “You are thinking of escape” he stated smoothly. She glared at him, “I am a captive and therefore am free to think whatever I want” she retorted. Youko turned his golden eyes forward again. She had spirit. Those were always the best ones. He mentally shook his head, she was here to be protected not seduced. Though if he had his way, there was no reason why the two couldn’t occur at once. He was fairly certain that Sesshoumaru was thinking along the same lines. No doubt the dog desired her, and that said a great deal. It had been a quarter of a century since the dog had taken anyone. It just might do him good. Besides, Youko missed the heady of days of wild bedsport shared with the dog and whatever fortunate female they happened to choose. They reached the desired floor and turned down the long hallway. Lilian had to admit that wherever she was, it was beautiful. But then the worst kinds of freaks had money she reminded herself. A small green creature ran across the floor ahead of them and she jumped, grabbing hold of her captor in the process. Youko rumbled softly to her as she pressed herself against him, her eyes wide and fixed. He looked up to see Jaken standing near the door. “Wh…what the hell is that?” she whispered, keeping close to Youko. He was no less of a threat but he was taller than that thing in the hall. If needed, she’d climb his lanky ass like a tree. “Jaken” Youko stated, “His name is Jaken. He will not harm you. He serves this house”. Lilian peered at the toad like man, who puffed up his thin little chest and bowed to her. Youko carefully untangled her from himself and urged her to move forward again. There was nowhere she could go now, except into the library. Sesshoumaru surely wouldn’t let her get too far. He watched as she crept closer to the doors, giving Jaken an obscenely wide berth. The toad merely pushed the heavy door open for her and she all but sprinted into it. Eager to get away from that ugly green thing. She collided with something warm and hard. Her breath catching in her throat as she stumbled back to meet a second pair of golden eyes. These more vibrant than the last. Broad shoulders attached to a tall body and he was crowned with silver hair. Lilian had to admit he was the most beautiful person she had seen. With finely carved features and delicately pointed ears. Why did all the hot ones have to be crazy or assholes? “You” she whispered as memory struck once more. His perfect brow arched slightly, “Indeed” he replied, “Jaken. Close the door, I do not wish to be disturbed for any reason until I am finished here”. Youko had already perched in the wide sill of the window, looking out into the overcast sky. His arms folded over his chest, as he waited for the dog to complete his inspection of this, their newest ward. “What do you want?” Lilian asked, unable to keep silent under his burning scrutiny, she pulled the bed sheets closer around her. Youko smirked behind her. ‘Loaded question’. Sesshoumaru sniffed lightly, finding that her scent was not unpleasant, vibrant and sweet like cherry blossoms, creamy and warm like fresh figs. Such a scent was distracting. “I see you are missing the majority of your clothing” he mused, sparing a glance at Youko who shook his head. “Females in my halls will always cover themselves, not display themselves like common wares” he told her, watching as fire flickered to life in her eyes. He waited, but though she was angry, her power did not spike. Her scent however did. “I am not common wares” she growled at him, “And I wouldn’t be half naked if you hadn’t kidnapped me. In case you haven’t heard, it’s a crime. People will look for me”. Sesshoumaru stepped behind her, slowly circling but she refused to budge. “Hn” he said softly, “ No one will look for you. Not for some time. You see they all believe that they said good bye to you last night at the airport and even now you are enjoying some far off shore”. She shook her head, “No” she began and he leaned close to her, pressing her back to his chest. “Yes. Now sit, there is the matter of why you are here that we must speak of. Youko will you ask Jaken to bring…..” he began and broke off, looking to Youko to enlighten him. “Lilian, her name is Lilian” Youko supplied. Sesshoumaru picked up where he had left off, “Bring Lilian a robe, until we can procure more suitable clothing for her?”. Youko nodded and peered out into the hall, relaying the lord’s wishes. Lilian blinked in confusion. Did this mean they weren’t going to kill her? “I’m confused” she blurted out. Sesshoumaru turned to her, “What is it?”. Lilian sighed, “You kidnapped me, have kept me here against my will….. no matter what you say about it” she pointed out, pointing an angry finger at the fox, “What do you want with me? Why am I here? I’d like to get this out of the way so I can get going if it’s all the same”. Youko chuckled. Sesshoumaru frowned, “It is not all the same and you have no say whatsoever as to when or if you will be permitted leave”. Lilian latched onto this. “So you are going to kill me! You sick bastards”. Youko rolled his eyes and cleared his throat drawing her attention. “You did say you would listen, shall I introduce another friend to keep you silent?” he asked, stroking his hair meaningfully. She shrank from him, “Keep your weird plants away from me, you hear?”. Sesshoumaru looked at the fox in askance. “She was a little difficult abovestairs. I used Starbane to keep her still” he offered. Sesshoumaru’s irises darkened fractionally and Youko nearly crowed in victory. No doubt the dog was recalling the last time they had used the plant, whose blooms secreted a slick and viscous fluid. Ah the fun to be had with it. “Starbane” the dog said, “Useful”. Youko nodded, “Very”. Turning his attention back to Lilian, Sesshoumaru noted that she looked very tired. “Sit and we shall try to explain some of what is going on” he commanded. She sank into the high backed chair, tense and waiting. Jaken scratched at the door a moment later, and Youko retrieved a long robe from him. He tossed it to her, “Put this on”. Jaken bowed, “Shall I have the kitchen prepare breakfast and tea for your guest?” he asked. Sesshoumaru nodded and the imp vanished. Lilian was all but swimming in the robe but she wasn’t about to complain. She was warm and covered. She wanted to keep it that way. Sesshoumaru and Youko patiently waited until her meal was brought up. Lilian’s stomach growled and she was hungry but there was no way she was eating with them watching her like this. Instead, she poured herself a cup of tea and cradled it in her hands, “So” she said softly, “Talk”. Sesshoumaru and Youko spent the next hour going over the basics with her. The entire history was far too long and complicated; all she needed to know was that she was now a part of it. She set her empty cup down on the wooden tray with delicate movements. “So let me get this straight” she said then, “There are two worlds, according to you. The one that I live in and the one that really exists. With demons and all that kind of thing”. Youko nodded. She pressed a fingertip to her lip, “And this is the actual reality, not the world I have been living in. Because in my world..humans are it. Right?”. He nodded again. Lilian gathered the robe around her and stood, “And I apparently have some great power that can either cement the balance of these two worlds are throw it all off course right?” Sesshoumaru growled softly, “Why must you repeat everything that we have said?” he demanded. She clenched her hands into fists, “To show I was paying attention. Hello! Look, this is all nuts, don’t get me wrong it might make an interesting book or screen play and you are in the town to get that done. But this….it just doesn’t work for me. I am just an average girl with a less than average social life. Ok? I’m leaving”. She turned to walk away and Youko rose to stop her. Sesshoumaru waved his hand dismissively. “Very well” he replied ,”You may go”. She blinked, “I may?” she asked. He nodded, “Jaken will alert the driver to take you home at once”. Lilian was thrilled, “I won’t even call the cops on you” she said, “But you have to tell me that you will stop doing this kind of thing ok?”. Two hours later, Sesshoumaru and Youko were perched near her apartment. “I can’t believe you let her go” Youko said. Sesshoumaru sighed, “It will make it easier in the long run. She will be attacked, she will be save and she will accept what we have said as fact and become easy to manage” he replied. Youko chuckled, “I don’t think that one will ever be easy to manage” he commented. For once Sesshoumaru’s mouth split into a hint of a smile, “We may find out fox”.
