Her dreams had been nightmares which woke her from sleep. Kagome
grimaced at the morning light shining from the window. "Nightmares. All night."
Strange sounds had invaded her sleep, sounds molding into dark shadows of
demons. The bad feeling was still so fresh. She rubbed her head.
"Ugh. What a night."
After taking a quick shower, Kagome dressed and went downstairs for
breakfast. She found Kikyo at the table just finishing her meal.
"Good morning, cousin." Kagome greeted.
"Good morning, Kagome." Kikyo returned. "I am glad you came to breakfast
before I left."
"You're leaving?" Kagome asked.
"Yes. An important matter arose early this morning, one that I must
attend to immediately. So I must caution you before I leave. I am currently
trying to subjugate a demon. This demon is in the basement. There is
a barrier surrounding him so he cannot escape. I am telling you this
so you do not accidently stumble upon him. He is no danger to you if
you do not go past the barrier. But if you go past it, he could kill you."
Kagome stared at Kikyo before slowly nodding her head. "UH...Oh, yes,
I understand, cousin."
Kikyo rose from the table. "Good. I will be leaving in a few minutes."
She left the dining room.
Kagome picked up a breakfast rice cake and began munching on it.
She was so hungry for some reason. Normally, she didn't eat a lot at breakfast
but her stomach was grumbling.
She slowly chewed for a moment in thought. That demon...that hanyou.
He was half human. What if...? What if he was starving? What if he needed to
eat too. Like her? From her elementary miko teachings, she knew that some
youkai didn't
need to eat but others did. Did his human side make him vunerable to hunger?
Or did his youkai side make him immune? The thought of him starving made her
chest ache. Would it hurt to find out? Maybe it would be alright just to
take him something...just to find out.
Ayame came in and began cleaning up Kikyo's breakfast dishes.
"Ayame?"
Ayame stopped and bowed her head. "Yes, Miss?"
"Um...Can you fix me some things for breakfast and wrap them up for me?"
The youkai servant gave a nod. "Yes, Miss? What foods would you like me
to prepare?"
Kagome smiled.
--------------------------------
It was a beautiful Sunday morning: blue sky, chirping crickets, and
cool wind playing in the trees. Kagome, basket in hand, knelt by the
base of the house with her back to the wall then sat in the crunch of fallen
leaves. She waited for several minutes. Would he speak again? Would
he reach out with his clawed hand? At that thought, Kagome lifted her long blue
skirt and checked the wound. It was a dark crusty red stripe running
down her right thigh from her hip to her knee: a very nasty looking scratch,
almost deep enough for stitches. She put her skirt back down, glad that
Kikyo hadn't found out about it.
Still waiting, Kagome lifted the basket lid and took out a warm roll.
She held it in her hand, knowing that he could smell it. If he could smell
her mikoness, he could smell this roll.
But still, there wasn't a single peep from the hole.
"Umm...good morning? Are you up yet?" She felt so silly talking to
a hole in the wall. "Will you not speak? I'll even let you yell at me some
more." She offered with a light smile.
Silence.
She sighed and put the wrapped roll on the ground by the square hole.
Frowning, she hugged her calves and laid her head on her knees. "I..I
was worried about you. I know you haven't eaten. It's not good to go
without eating..even if you are a youkai. I brought you something."
She waited...and waited....still she heard...nothing.
"I didn't come here to help Kikyo...If that's what you think. I came
here to train at the temple in the city. I come from a small town.
We only have one Miko there and she's old, really old. She taught me
a few things about medicinal herbs and such. Not much really. She
made good hot cocoa though...I miss her."
Beginning to feel down again, Kagome lifted her head to gaze at the
blue morning sky. "The sky is so pretty today. It's so blue. And the flowers
smell wonderful. I can't believe how beautiful it all is. This reminds me
of home. Home...." Kagome trailed off, losing thought.
After a few moments, she looked at the hole. It was so dark in there.
Kagome got on her hands and knees, bent down, and looked into the darkness,
her forehead touching the hard brick stone. "Hello?" She whispered into
that darkness. "I..." She hoped he wouldn't scratch her again. Was she
being brave or stupid? Maybe more stupid. "Uh...hello?"
Kagome backed off quickly when the smell almost made her hurl.
It was a horrible odor: the smell of...
Stunned for a second in realization, Kagome grabbed the basket and
hurried to the house.

The basement door was not hard to find. She stood in front of it, staring
at the door handle. What lay beyond that door? Was there a horrible
monster or was there something else? That feeling inside said it was something
else. Now determined, she took hold of the handle, turned it to the left once,
and pushed.
