Secrets
Revealed
Kagome let out a
breath she didn’t know she was holding as she fell into step behind Inuyasha.
She pondered on his new appearance and slightly different attitude towards her.
‘Was it just because Kikyo was no longer here that he has decided to be nicer
to me? Does he even know that she is no longer walking the earth? I’m so
confused. And what about Sesshomaru, why did he save me, what’s with the sudden
attitude changes? One things for certain the two of them sure know how to
confuse a person, they have more sides to them then a prism has shades or
colors. God I feel like my head is gonna explode with questions, I am sure if
anyone looks closely enough they will either see smoke spilling from my ears or
see the questions flashing through my eyes like a TV screen.’ Kagome was too
busy looking at the dirt and grass worn path to realize that they had already
reached Keades’ village.
“KAAAAGOOOMMMEEE.” Shippo cried out as he caught
sight of her behind Inuyasha. She barely had the time to brace her self before
Shippo plowed into her.
“Ooooph!” was all she
could manage to get out as Shippo hooked his arms around her neck and squeezed.
“Shippo,” gasp “I” gasp “Can’t” gasp “Breathe.” She squeeked out as best she
could.
“OI Runt! Take it easy
on her, you know you are getting stronger and a little too big to be
doing that to her!” Inuyasha yelled at Shippo.
“It’s ok Inuyasha, I’
fine. I don’t think Shippo knows his own strength yet.” Kagome said in the
hopes of disarming Inuyasha before he pummeled Shippo.
“Keh” Was his own
reply to her as he entered the hut to give Keade the food Kagomes’ mother had
cooked for them.
Kagome and Shippo
followed him into the hut where Kagome dropped her overly stuffed bag. She
began to unload some of her texts and binders, as well as some of her clothing
and towels that she had brought with her. Placing them neatly in a corner of
the hut she was vastly relieved that her back pack was now almost twice as
light as it had just been. Over the years she had gotten into the habit of
cycling through her texts and clothes as they came and went from Keades’
village. It had simply become too heavy with university texts and clothes to
lug around with her. So now she only carried a change of clothes per trip,
toiletries, and selected texts with a binder and pencil.
“Inuyasha, can you let
Sango know that I am here and helping Keade get lunch set out? I think we’ll
set it up outside since there are so many of us.” She tied her hair up into a
high pony tail at the back of her head. ‘It’s so damned hot’ she thought as she
fanned herself with her hand ‘I bet Sango is relieved I brought those long
skirts and light shirts over for her. She’d be sweltering in anything else.’
“Whatever.” Inuyasha
answered as he left the hut. He walked off in the direction of Sango and
Mirokus’ own little hut and wondered where his brother was hiding.
Kagome and Keade had
just finished unpacking all the sandwiches, water melon and mixed vegetables
when Sango walked in.
“Kagome, you’re back
already… are you sure you are ok enough to be back so soon? We all thought you
would want to spend more time with your family.” Sango asked as she walked up
to Kagome and hugged her lightly. Over the years their bond as friends had
grown a great deal and they could often finish off each others thoughts or know
without asking what the other thought of something. Not so hard to believe when
they had been fighting their own war for the Shikon no Tama together.
“Eh? Oh I’m fine
Sango. I went to the doctors. Everything is as it should be.” Kagome smiled
lightly for Sango and then turned back to all the unpacked food. “I am thinking
that we will have a picnic with Sesshomaru, Rin and Jackan in the field a
little ways from here. What do you think?”
“Sounds good, that
sure is a lot of food. I love it when your mom makes food for us.” Sango went
to pick up the fruit and vegetable bowls cradling one in each arm. “Wow, she
really went all out this time, huh Kagome, these are heavy.”
“Yeah, well, I guess
she wants to make this as comfortable for us all as she can. She can’t exactly
mother me or any of us while we are over here.” Kagome replied while picking up
the bowl of sliced up chunks of ham that was made for Sesshomaru and the huge
plate of sandwiches.
Keade grabbed a
blanket and some cups along with the bucket of water and followed the girls out
of the hut. They made their way to the clearing and found Sesshomaru already
there.
“Oh, Sesshomaru-sama,
I hope we are not interrupting you.” Sango said as she set the bowls down and
looked around the clearing. “If it is alright with you, we would like to set up
a picnic. We were going to invite you, Rin and Jackan as well…” Sangos’ voice
faded away as she took in the sight of a darker verion of Inuyasha. Casting her
eyes about she was sure that Jackan was no where close by. “Oh.” Slipped by her
lips without her bidding and she felt a blush color her cheeks slightly. Unsure
of what she should do or say and taking Sesshomarus’ silence as an ok she set
her things down and took a closer look at Sesshomarus’ companions. Rin and
Yukao were walking back from the direction of the river, wet head to toe. Rin
was smiling to her self and Yukao was stomping along mumbling something about
cheating while casting disgruntled looks in Rins direction.
Sesshomaru looked at
the three human women who were now approaching him. Glancing at the weird
baskets they were carrying he sniffed the air curious as to what they would eat
and if Rin would like it, he merely nodded his head once and looked away back
towards the forest. A moment later Inuyasha, Miroku and Shippo came through the
trees’ and into the clearing.
After setting up
everything Kagome turned to where Rin and Sesshomaru were sitting beside each
other watching everything that took place. “This is what we call finger food
where I’m from, because we do not need to use chop sticks to eat it. There are
sandwiches, fruit, vegetables and some ham for you Sesshomaru; I figured that
you would rather eat meat than all this other stuff.” Kagome got up and handed
chop sticks and the bowl of ham chunks to Sesshomaru who took them wearily,
sniffing at it a bit.
Rin went over to join
the others and found that she actually really liked the food that they had
eaten, especially the Water Mellon. She laughed and joked with Shippo when a
sudden thought stuck her. “Hey Shippo, why have you not grown since I’ve first
seen you so many years ago?” Rin asked Shippo causing everyone to fall silent.
“Actually, now that
you have mentioned it, why haven’t you grown at all Shippo? Do Demons grow so
slowly all their life? I thought they grew at a human rate until adult hood and
then slowed down…” Kagome asked him as she bit into her watermelon. “Ouch!”
She cried out as she slapped her neck, just below her jaw. She pulled her hand
back and glanced down. “Myoga!” She said surprised.
“Ahhh Lady Kagome,
such sweet delicious blood, it is always a pleasure running into you.” He said
as he re-inflated him self.
“Myoga, what are you
doing here?” Kagome asked as she eyed the flea.
“Yeah, what are you
doing here anyways; I thought you were supposed to be out looking for rumors on
Naraku.” Inuyasha said gruffly.
“My apologies, my lord
Inuyasha, I was out in the north when I sensed a great disturbance in the West
that felt strangely like you and your esteemed brother Sesshomaru-Sama were
using the Tetsusaiga and Tensaiga to communicate, a feat that has never been
seen before, not even by your late Father, The Inu no Taisho.” Myoga said as he
eyed Inuyasha and Sesshomaru in turn, glancing every now and then at the swords
strapped to their waists.
“Indeed and why would
our father need to use the swords to communicate with himself at great
distances? He did after all; carry the three swords with him at all times. They
were never separated from each other or him at any given time. Ergo there was
no need for such an event to take place before now.” Sesshomaru stated in a
bored tone while looking just above Myoga to the trees in the distance.
“…”
“He’s right, Myoga.
All this, means is that we found out something new and useful about the two
swords.” Kagome said.
“Ahem, that is true.”
Myoga said while a little sweat drop made its way down his bald head.
“Master Inuyasha! I
can not believe it, you have come of age!” Myoga squeaked as he took in his masters new apparence and hopped over to him to hop up and
down on Inuyashas’ knee.
“What are you talking
about flea?” Inuyasha grumped as he swallowed a chunk of salami sandwich.
“Lord Inuyasha, you
have entered into the third final phase of your life, the stripes on your face
and lack of doggy ears are proof of it!” Myoga stated as he waved his arms in
excitement.
“You mean demons don’t
age the same way humans do? That they age in… what, levels? Every so many years
they level up? Or is it something else?” Kagome looked quite interested in what
Myoga had to say. In the corner of her vision she could see Shippo munching
away ignoring what was going on.
“Demons have six different
states throughout their life. Not until they reach the fifth state are they
considered fully grown. The first state is a baby state, where they learn how
to control their body, with walking, running, dexterity and so forth. The
second state is that of a child, here they learn things like their powers and the
ways of their fellow demons, although I must say here that it is only their
most basic powers that they learn, not until a demon has reached its’ fifth
state will they become fully aware of the extent to their power. Little Shippo
here is in his second state, although I suspect that he will be entering his
third state quite soon, am I right Shippo?” Myogas’ voice had taken on a sagely
tone and he was now sitting cross legged on Inuyashas’ knee with his arms
crossed across his chest, his chip raised slightly in an all knowing way.
Kagome and the others
glanced at Shippo and saw him nod his head minutely.
“You mean… you know
when these changes of state are going to happen. You can feel them?” Kagome
asked, as she glanced from one demon to the other around them. Shippo shrugged
and Inuyasha looked bewildered while Sesshomaru remained completely still as a
stone, staring at Myoga.
Myoga, being
completely wrapped up in basking in the attention being directed at him by the
group of demons and humans was oblivious to the Tiayoukais intense stare went
on. “I do believe that full blooded demons can feel their change of state
approaching but very little is known of half breeds. Lord Inuyasha, did you
have any inkling that your third change of state was approaching?”
Keh,
no.”
Inuyasha grumped out while still eyeing Myoga, his brows brought together in a
furrow as he continued to glare at the flea.
“I see, so then half
breeds do not appear to have fore warning of changes of state occurring… Well,
anyways, the third state is that of early to mid teenage hood. They become more
pack oriented, more adventurous and they tend to battle a lot more, they spend
a great deal of their time, honing their current fighting skills and discover a
few new ones as well. The Fourth state is that with which Inuyasha has just
entered. Late adolescence, it appears as though for half breeds that their
demon blood becomes more prevalent as well as the normal increase in power and
speed and appearance of markings. This is also the state in which they begin to
experience the regular mating seasons, they are driven to look for mates, but
not propagate as of yet.
“Mating seasons?”
Kagome asked and blushed slightly when she glanced at Inuyasha and then
Sesshomaru.
“Uh
yes, Kagome-sama. Dog demons go through a mating seasons, which is in the spring
time. They are driven by their instincts to mate. Although they may mate it
does not mean that they have to choose their bedmate as a life mate. They will
have a bit of control over that choice, and like I said, they do not propagate
until the later states.” Myoga went on as Kagome nodded her head slightly. “The
fifth state is that of Early Adulthood, I believe Sesshomaru-sama is a perfect
example of this state. This is the state in which demons normally form their
own packs. Rin is the first female member of Sesshomaru-samas’ pack while you,
Kagome, were the first female of Inuyashas’ pack. Although Inuyasha has gone
against the norm here, it is highly unheard of for such a young hanyou to have
formed a pack already, but you are all a part of it. Aside from the pack,
demons of this age are now able to spawn offspring if they so wish, although
they usually only do this with their intended life mate. And the sixth state is
that of full adulthood. Once a demon has chosen a life mate, that is, both the
subconscious demon side and their conscious demon side have to both agreed on a
mate, he will then claim her and spawn offspring. At this point their markings
become more acute and the rest of their power is unleashed. It is at this point
which all aging is halted.” Myoga heaved a great sigh at the end of his
explanation.
“Wow, I had no idea it
was all so complicated…” Sango said and Miroku and Kagome nodded their heads
along with them. Rin on the other hand just stared at Inuyasha, while a light
pink spread from the bridge her nose to her cheeks.
Sesshomaru glanced at
Rin and then Inuyasha and frowned. ‘Kami, do not let her first crush be on my
half brother, please kami, don’t do that to me!’ Sesshomaru looked directly at
Rin and was about to say something when a scent he had not smelt before hit his
nose. He wrinkled his brow and sniffed a bit more. His nose flared and his eyes
opened slightly wider. ‘Already? Wait a minute; did
Inuyasha smell what was happening yesterday? Is that why he suggested Rin come
for a talk with one of his female companions?’ Rins scent had taken on a
sweetly muskier smell that was slightly stronger than her usual smell, just
enhanced slightly, which could only mean one thing… Rin was in heat. Sesshomaru
schooled his features back into his customary frown and placed his bowl of
‘ham’ down. He had to admit the meat although cooked was quite good. He stood
up and addressed the human female that he deemed more suitable and less ‘outlandish’
to his tastes.
“Tiajiya, this
Sesshomaru will have a word with you.” Was all he said as he got up and walked
into the forest.
Sango froze and then
looked at her friends sitting around them, looking for guidance on what she
should do.
“It’s alright Sango, I
know what he wants and it’s nothing you can’t handle.” Inuyasha said as he
looked at Rin who had turned her still pink cheeks back to her food.
Sango glanced at Rin
and then Inuyasha and then Sesshomarus’ retreating back and then back at Rin. “Ooooh, ok.” And with that she followed after Sesshomaru at
a quick pace.
Once everyone had
finished up their meal, they each carried something back to the hut and went
their own ways. Shippo ran off to play with the village children at the river,
Miroku went off to meditate, and when Rin had said she was going to go for a
walk through the forest Inuyasha had insisted on going along with her.
He did not want to be
left alone with Kagome after the sitting she had just given him and the nasty
words he had just thrown her way. Why was it that they could not go an
afternoon without scrapping it out with each other? All it took was him calling
Kagome an idiot for trying to walk around the woods by herself, and asking if
she had learnt her lesson yet. He had just finished his beratement of her when
he realized that she had become stiff as wood causing him to inwardly cringe.
He knew what was coming next. Kagome had taken such a deep breath that her
chest has puffed out, her scream had had so much force behind it that one sit
alone had sent him a foot into the ground silencing him completely.
Kagome had then
decided to spend the after noon studying in the shade just inside the village
boundaries. She had no inkling to join up with any one else and quickly decided
that she would rather have some quiet time alone, it was after all hard to come
by these days. ‘Yeah, I think this is exactly what I need a little bit of.’ She
thought to her self in her head as she opened up her text and started to read,
underlining the parts that she thought were important to remember and go over
again.
“Lord Sesshomaru, what
is it you wished to speak with me about?” Sango asked once they had reached a
suitable distance away to be out of ear shot.
“Rin.” Sesshomaru answered curtly.
“…uh,
Rin?” Sango
asked somewhat dumbfoundedly.
“This Sesshomaru would
appreciate it if you would inform Rin of what happens when a woman comes of
age, and how to deal with said event.” Sesshomaru said as he eyed the Tiajiya
who had turned slightly pink her self.
“Oh, you think it may
be soon then?” Sango asked in a small quiet voice.
“According to her
scent, within a weeks time.” Sesshomaru answered.
“Oh, ah, ok, I would
be honored to assist you with your ward Sesshomaru-sama.” Sango said with more
conviction in her voice than before.
Sesshomaru nodded his
head slightly and then started his walk back to the clearing, when they were
within eyesight of the clearing and found that the others had packed up and
left already Sesshomaru accompanied Sango to the village and then left her to
go scouting the perimeter on his own.
Sesshomaru had just
left the forest that surrounded the camped out wolves and wolf demons when he
came upon Inuyasha and Rins’ scent. He leaped off in their direction to see
what they were doing together this far from the village. Silently he leaped
into a tall tree a few yards from the path they seemed to be walking on and
watched them silently. He smirked inwardly to him self when he saw that
Inuyasha did not detect his presence.
“Thank you, Inuyasha-sama,
for accompanying me on my walk, but I do not think it is necessary. Is this not
known as Inuyashas’ Forest? Surely you guard
it against unseemly demons or bandits.” Rin said as she walked along while
twisting the stems of flowers together into a braid.
“Keh, yeah, I guard it
and the village that resides within it, but not for the reasons you probably think I do.” Inuyasha said.
“No? Then what are your
reasons for guarding it?” Rin asked looking up at him.
Inuyasha paused a
moment looking at her. Her eyes were wide with curiosity and innocence, still
just a child and yet on the cusp of woman hood. Like his brother, he could
smell her heat scent and though it made him light headed and he could feel
something within him almost growl or whine at the scent of it, he ignored it
and concentrated on their conversation. Rin after all was still very much a
child and then another thought was pushed forward harshly before his thoughts…
Kagome, why he was thinking of her, he was not sure. He shook his head slightly
to clear it of muddled thoughts that were too much for him to sort through as
he glanced into the trees’ and let him self tell this young woman things he had
never actually openly discussed with another, not even Kagome. Why was he
allowing him self to do this? He did not know, but it did not seem to bother
him to think that she would know. Talking to her felt normal, natural and he
welcomed the chance to rid his heart and soul of painful memories.
“The Shikon Jewel has
long resided within this forest. It was guarded by a miko who lived within the
village… Keades’ older sister, who is dead now. Before
she died many years ago she bound me to a tree here in this forest, and there I
stayed for fifty years until Kagome came along and unbound me. To me it was as
though I had gone to bed and awoken a moment later. But to everyone else it had
been fifty years… The mikos’ name was Kikyo.” He heard Rins small gasp and
nodded his head. “So, you’ve heard of her, the dead priestess that walked the
earth once more.” Inuyasha looked at Rin.
Rin nodded her head
but did not say a word; she was worried that if she voiced something he would
not go on talking as he was. She did not think this was normal for Inuyasha to
be so open about him self; it just did not seem to be his way.
“Kikyo,
was my first love. We would often spend time together and sometimes it was
filled with conversation and sometimes it was filled with quiet stillness. We
took comfort in each others presence. I, a hanyou who was not
accepted in either the Demon or the Human worlds and her, a Miko whose job was
to guard the ever sought after Shikon Jewel. We were both weary of our
fates, both tired of fighting against all who sought to end us.” He was quiet
for a moment as they walked on along the path.
“When I first heard of
the Shikon Jewel, I traveled here to see if it was true, if a jewel that could
grant a single wish to those who held it could be real. When I got here, I
discovered that it was indeed true. I sought to get it from her. I did not
truly seek to harm her for the jewel; I sought out ways to steal it from her
without bringing harm to her or anyone else. And she in turn, did not truly
want to harm me. I am certain she could have killed me any number of times, as
I could have her, but we did not, and soon enough we became companions, and she
asked me what I wanted the jewel for. And through our long talks and even
longer peaceful silences we came to love each other.” They had reached a little
creak with stones along side it. Inuyasha looked around and sat upon one of the
stones, while Rin took a seat on the grass beside the Creak and dipped her feet
in to soak them, waiting in silence for Inuyasha to continue.
“I told her I wished
to make a wish upon the Jewel to become a full demon.” He sighed heavily before
continuing. “When she heard this, she asked me if I would be willing to become
human instead and live with her, for she said, she could not ever live a life
of love with a demon or a hanyou. Her miko duties would not allow it. But if I
were to wish to be human and if I truly did love her then I would and we could
both go on with our lives. She would be removed of the duty to guard the Jewel
for a wish of love would destroy it for good… or so she thought. The day came
when we were to make the wish and on that day we were both deceived, and turned
against one another. In the end I attacked the village to steal the jewel and
many were injured in the attack. She in turn bound me to a tree with the last
of her strength, an imposter had dealt a death blow to her and she was nearly
dead already thinking it was me. After that I am told that she instructed her
little sister Keade to burn the Jewel with her as she wished to take it with
her to the after life. When she was reincarnated the jewel came back with her… In Kagome.” He heard Rins gasp of astonishment and looked at
her.
“Kagome is her
reincarnation…” Rin said a little awed.
“Yes, but she is so
much more as well, at first I would become confused and think that she was just
a copy of Kikyo, but then as the years went by and Kikyo was resurrected
memories would also come back and I soon came to see that though Kagome held
Kikyos’ soul, she also held her own as well.” Inuyashas’ voice had taken on a
quiet slightly saddened tone. “I have inflicted a lot of damage upon Kagome, I
do not think even she realizes how much…” Heaving a big sigh, he looked up at
the sky and was startled to see that the sun was almost setting. Leaping to his
feet he started off down the path once more. “We should get back, the others will
probably send out a search party if we are not back by sunset.”
“Ok.” was all Rin
could manage. She was still astonished at how much of him self he had let her
see. She slipped on her sandals and ran up to his side matching his pace.
“Oh and Rin, although
I do protect these forests and try to keep them clear of oni or other blood
thirsty demons and bandits, I have been gone for some time and I am certain
that unwanted beings have moved in during that time. Kagome her self was
attacked and almost raped just yesterday, so please, keep out of the forest
unless one of us is with you.” He didn’t spare her a glance to see what her
reaction was, but instead just kept on walking.
Rin was silent, so
much was clouding into her head, there was so much new information and to top
it all off, for the past week she had become aware of some sort of tingling
sensation that would race down her spine and shoot through her limbs to numb
her finger tips. What this was or could be was beyond her, but for some reason,
she did not want to bring it to any ones attention just yet. Some part of her
was telling her that it was not normal but that she should keep it to her self.
If she had learned anything from traveling with Sesshomaru-sama over the years,
it was to always listen to your instincts.
“I’ll keep that in
mind Inuyasha-sama.” With that said they lapsed into a companionable silence
until they got back to the village and parted ways.
Sesshomaru had
followed along behind the two while they talked and sat by the stream. He was to
his chagrin surprised at Inuyashas’ past. Much of what he had learned over the
afternoon from eavesdropping had been new to him. This new information made him
doubt whether or not Inuyasha should actually mate the miko. Although she was
strong and beautiful for a human, the root of his doubt did not lie in her, but
in Inuyasha. It did not sound to Sesshomaru as though Inuyashas beast agreed
with him. And as Myoga had already told the humans at lunch, a life mate must
be chosen by both the beast and the man inside the demon. It seemed to
Sesshomaru as though Inuyashas’ ‘man’ or ‘conscious’ part was doing all the
choosing while his beast had lain in slumber all these years. ‘I wonder if
perhaps for hanyou it is different, could it be that Inuyasha has not been
communicating with his demon beast. Hmm, the only time it has come to the
surface, at least in the past has been when he has lost all control. Maybe the
two are not completely aware of each other.’ Sesshomaru ended his pondering and
went in search of Myoga. Perhaps the flea could answer some of his questions.
Upon coming to the
edge of the trees that surrounded the village Sesshomaru was surprised to see
the miko sitting under a tree with a funny looking thing, it looked like scroll
paper cut into squares piled high on top of one another and wrapped in thicker
stronger scroll paper. He paused and stepped closer to get a good look at what
it was. He was surprised despite him self to see that it was paper filled with
the smallest neatest printing he’d ever seen with the most amazing pictures
drawn or painted into the paper as well. Sesshomaru paused and read a paragraph
or two. It appeared as though the miko was highly educated, there were words on
the paper that not even he had heard of before and it seemed as though the
ideas and sentences were worded in weird ways, not the usual ways of today.
Sesshomaru, being as old as he was, having lived for hundreds or years already
himself knew that language and writing changed and expanded over the years,
which further made him ponder the mikos’ origins even further.
“Miko.” He said and then leaped aside
as he watched her move faster than he had anticipated she could move, balls of
purifying energy blasting apart the tree he had been standing in front of a
second ago.
Kagome had been deep
into her reading of her chemistry text and had not been paying attention to her
surroundings. If she had been, she would have felt the approaching demon aura
and been fore warned of domineering presence hovering above her, but alas she
was not. “Miko.” A commanding voice had said
right behind her, and her instincts had kicked in before logic could take its
place. Instantly the book was forgotten, she spun to her left and swung her
feet under her self at the same time, using her leg muscles to push her self
into a crouching position while her arms swung out in front of her self in a
defensive position that she had practiced and practiced many times over again
during her martial arts lessons. A split second later white light erupted from
her hands and formed balls of energy in her palms. “HIEEE!”
She cried out and released before she could focus on who it was.
Kagome froze as the
tree before her came into focus, her purifying power having hurtled into a
tree, snapping branches and leaves off before being absorbed by the tree. “Eh?”
She said and then blinked, to her right she caught the sight of white silk
coming to rest beside her. “Oh Kami.” She whispered as
cold fear laced its way through her blood stream. She froze in place as her
eyes met those of gold.
“Sesshomaru, I’m
sorry, you startled me, I didn’t mean…” She tried to explain but only managed
to stumble over her self.
“Miko, do you always
attack without looking to see who your opponent is first?” His voice was cold
and emotionless while his eyes seemed to strike her to her core.
“Uh,
uhm no. I
guess I am a little jumpy.” She answered in a meek tone. Battling TiaYoukai dog
demons who were supposed to be their allies was not something she wanted to do
one on one. She kicked her self for her over active instincts and berated her
self for allowing her guard to drop so completely that she did not even sense
HIS demonic aura. It’s not exactly something that one could miss.
“Hn.” He said as he looked at her up
and down and then to the tree and the sheaf’s of paper on the ground.
“Uh, I was just
studying… is there something you wanted Sesshomaru-sama?” She asked in the
lightest none confrontational tone she could manage.
Sesshomaru stood
still, not moving or saying anything. His eyes remained on the miko, sweeping
from head to toe. He could feel his beast growling and roaring within him
taking her actions as a challenge to him. He could tell that his beast was
perplexed by the miko, that it was interested in her. He wanted to test her, to
test her strength and loyalty. Sesshomaru shoved his beast back. ‘This
Sesshomaru does not take interest in humans.’ And with that Sesshomaru
raised an eyebrow and met the mikos gaze. He spotted the faint blush that had
spread across her nose and cheeks at his blatant stare at her body, he noted as
well that her smell had become slightly sweeter a bit of spice had tinged the outside
of it. Once again his beast growled with interest, and once again he shoved it
aside.
“This Sesshomaru wants
to know what it is that you are reading.” He said as he eyed the forgotten
book.
“Eh!?” Kagomes’ face took on a
startled expression and then flinched at her own simple minded answer as she
bent down to retrieve her abused book. “Oh, ah, I mean. This is my Chemistry
text book. This is what scrolls look like where I am from.” She dusted off her
text and retrieved her fallen highlighter.
“Text
book?” His
eyebrow remained raised.
Kagome seeing the
continued unsaid question went on to explain. “Uhm, where I am from, we call
these books” She gave him the text book to look at “and when they are used for
educational purposes we call them ‘text books.’” She said as she watched him
flip through it.
Sesshomaru glanced
through the book and then looked directly at the miko, daring her to lie to him
with her next answer. “And where are you from, miko?”
Kagome swallowed while
casting her gaze around. She was unsure of what to do. ‘Was he an ally that
could be trusted or not?’ Kagome certainly did not know for sure. ‘But then
again he did save me from being raped and he would not have done that unless he
was an ally… right?’ She mentally gave her head a shake. ‘Enough of that, I
knew this would happen sooner or later. I might as well get it over with. We’ll
deal with whatever consequences arise later.’
Kagomes’ shoulders
were slumped in defeat. The weight of her secret had always felt like an
avalanche to her. ‘Maybe’ she thought ‘sharing it with someone else will make
the load a little lighter.’ She looked at the tree behind her where her back
pack sat and then at the village. “It’s a long story; would you like to go for
a walk with me? I’ll explain on the way.”
Sesshomaru stared at
her. “On the way?” He echoed back to her, his question
plain in his tone.
“To
the well, by the Goshinboku tree. I… I’ll explain on the way, and if you don’t trust me… I’ll show
you.” She said with a slight squeak to her voice.
“hnn”
was all Sesshomaru said as he turned in the direction of the well.
Kagome turned to pick
up her back pack and then remembered that she had gotten Sesshomaru books as a
way of saying thank you. She knelt down in front of her bag and pulled out the
three books and then turned back to the Tiayoukai before her. “Uhm, Sesshomaru-sama. Where I come from it is polite to
thank and gift a person who has done a great service for you, and I have yet to
thank you or give you a gift.” Kagome said as she turned to face him holding
the books in front of her self.
Sesshomaru looked at
the miko before him and a flash of surprise showed in his features before he
schooled them back into place, but not before Kagome got a glimpse of it. This
heartened her to continue and she did so with slightly more confidence.
“Sesshomaru-sama, I would like to thank you for saving my honor from the
sprite, and as a token of my thanks and the thanks of my momma and grandpa, I’d
like to give you these books. They are from my time, but I thought, if there
was anything I could get you that might be of interest to you, it would be
knowledge of some sort.” With that Kagome gave him the three heavy books.
“This one here is what
we call an ‘Atlas’ in my time. It has within it all the known lands and waters
that are on earth. In my time we humans have already mapped the entire world.
This atlas shows land masses, rivers, lakes, seas, oceans, mountains, desserts
and flat lands or forests and which ever else there is on the face of the earth
within each land mass. I’ll go through it with you if you would like later on.”
Kagome looked at him and saw a faint gleam within his eyes, this spurred her
on.
“And this one is a
book which has all the many different kinds of plants, or weeds that are known
to exist in this time. It also has the locations listed on each map of the
known species of tree or vegetation around the world from this era… I should
say here that people in my time no longer believe that demons are real… so I am
not certain if some of these ‘people’ or ‘tribes’ that are listed are actually
not demon settlements themselves or just merely people. The book lists the founders
of the plant life and the origins of both.” Kagome smiled at him and took the
third book and opened it to the middle of the book.
“This is a map of the
skies, as you know demons and people alike have long studied the heavens. Well
in my time, we have come up with this. It lists the location of all the known
constellations and where one can find them at which point in the year. Sailors
and Adventurers have long used them as a way to find their way home or to their
destination of choice.” Kagome finished and drew in a big breath before letting
it slide out slowly. She looked at Sesshomaru and found him staring intently at
her. Fidgeting a bit under his intense gaze she opted to looked
around them at the ground, trees or sky waiting for him to break the silence
that had fallen between them.
Sesshomaru stared at
the miko before him. She truly did perplex him. He had never had a human spark
such interest within him, not even Rin, whom he had allowed to follow him and
was now considered the first member of his own pack, his ward. The miko who
stood before him was beautiful, strong and apparently well educated. He found
him self wondering what her personality was like, whether she would obey
without question or fight back against him, whether she would argue and state
her own thoughts on things or just roll over and go with what he said, as so
many other demonesses had done before her. All of whom, bored him. He was not
seeking out a docile compliant mate but one with whom he would not grow bored
with, one who would question him every now and then and present a challenge to
him once and a while.
Sesshomaru was
slightly aghast at his own thoughts and sought to snap him self out of them.
‘This Sesshomaru will not allow him self to ponder the possibility of mating a
human!’ He stated sternly to himself and addressed the miko, who stood waiting while
fidgeting slightly for him to say something.
“You are welcome miko,
and your gifts are very much appreciated. I look forward to reading them.” He
stated in a gentler then usual tone that still managed to sound bored.
‘How does he do that,’
Kagome pondered ‘how does he manage to sound bored all the time while
instilling other feelings into his voice at the same time. Gah, I suspect I
will never know.’
Kagome smiled him and
hefted her back pack onto her shoulder. She turned away from him without
further words and headed towards the well.
Sesshomaru looked at
the miko as she slowly walked away from him, the slight sway of her hips caught
his eye and he found him self slightly entranced. He blinked. ‘Grrrr,’ he
growled at him self inwardly and walked to the mikos’ side.
“Sesshomaru-sama,
would you mind if I took a slight detour to drop off my back pack in Keades’
hut before we continue on to the well?” Kagome asked as she looked to the hut a
few meters away from them.
Sesshomaru stopped and
turned to face the hut, he nodded his head once and watched as she ran off to
the hut disappearing inside and then reappearing a moment later. He turned and
resumed his pace towards the well and Kagomes’ home.
Kagome was silent for
a moment and then cleared her throat. “I guess I should start by telling you
what time I am from rather than where I am from.” Kagome glanced at him and saw
him raise an eyebrow slightly in return. She went on with her explanation. “I
was born five hundred years from now in the future. The well I am bringing you
to allows’ me to travel through time between our two times. I think that I am
here to fix a wrong my incarnation committed before she died. I believe I was
allowed back here because within my body was the Shikon no Tama, it was not
meant for my time and so I was brought back here. Before I could figure out
what it was or how to get rid of it, I shattered it into many small little
shards. Inuyasha helps me collect them now, and because of the Tetsusaiga he
has sworn to protect me while I am here and on the hunt for the shards. You
see, the Tetsusaiga will only work if the wielder is willingly protecting human
life, or those he loves. Since I can sense where jewel shards are and purify
them, Inuyasha stays with me. At first it was purely for the jewel itself, he
still wanted to wish upon it and become a full demon, but now we stay together
for vengeance and loyalty basically. Everyone in our group except for me has
been hurt in some fashion by him, Naraku. Sango has lost her entire village and
family, her little brother you know about, he’s the only remaining family she
has. Mirokus’ family is cursed, every male within his line will develop a wind
scar on their right palm that will continue to grow throughout their life times
and is passed down from father to first born son until the day Naraku is
destroyed. Inuyasha loved Kikyo, but they were tricked into betraying each
other and as a result she was murdered. Kouga and the wolves that are staying
close by have lost most of their packs.” Kagome heaved a sigh. “Individually we
are too weak to defeat him, but together we hope to destroy him for good.” She
looked at Sesshomaru and saw him nod slightly.
A moment of silence
drew forth between them. ‘So, you are allowed to travel through time to
complete your task… what is to happen once that task is complete?’ He wanted to
ask out loud but stopped him self. He would not permit himself to show interest
in a ningens life no matter how interesting it appeared to be.
Kagome looked around
them and found that they were close to the well, and as though she had heard
his very thoughts she unwittingly answered his unvoiced question for him. “I do
not know what will happen to me once I complete my mission here, maybe I will
be given a choice… or maybe I will simply be forced to continue on with my life
in the future, I cannot say.” Kagome stopped by the well and looked down. She
could feel the magic pull at her while twisting and turning beneath the ground.
“Do you want to see
for yourself? Although let me warn you, I have never before tried to take
anyone else back with me, so far only Inuyasha has come to my time. The well
seems to allow him to come and go as he pleases.” Kagome said as she turned to
face him, waiting for his answer.
He stood there for a
moment and eyed the well. He had just watched her and Inuyasha jump into this
very well the night before. Curiosity welled up in him as to what he would find
on the other side of the well and he found that he did very much want to see
what was on the other side. He turned the miko and saw her watching him
closely. “You will show this Sesshomaru your home.” He said and watched her nod
her head slightly.
“You must swear first
that you will not harm anyone while you are there. It is not the same as it is
here. The only demon my family has ever seen is Inuyasha. In my time people no
longer believe that demons are real, that they have never been real. I come
from a shrine family, my grandfather when he first met Inuyasha threw an ofuda
at him and cried ‘Demon be Gone!’” Kagome paused for a moment to nibble on her
lower lip. “Of course the ofuda did nothing… my grandfather has no sacred power
within him. He could not even bind Myoga or purify him if he had tried with all
his might.” Kagome said with a slight smirk.
Sesshomaru listened
half heartedly as he thought of what she said. ‘Why would people no longer
believe in them, were the demons of her time hiding, or did they simply no
longer exist? If they no longer existed then what had happened to them?’
Sesshomaru had many questions and found that as she went on talking his
questions seemed to pile up.
“Miko, you have this
Sesshomarus’ word that no human may come to harm while this Sesshomaru is
there.” He said as he grabbed her arm and yanked her unceremoniously against
him. He heard her squeak slightly and felt her grasp hold of his haori. His
inner beast growled at the close proximity of the miko, whom he craved to
taste. Sesshomaru ignored it and instead stepped up onto the edge of the well.
He gripped the miko closer to him, to the point where he could feel her shapely
breasts’ pushed up against his hard chest. He smirked visibly at her light
blush as she looked away. A slight flare of his nostrils told him that he had
an affect on the young miko and with that thought he leaped into the depths of
the well.
Kagome didn’t know
what the hell her body thought it was doing. What was with all these foreign
thoughts and feelings suddenly taking up residence in her mind and body? She
could see the time slip within the well open up and swallow them, but she could
not feel the usual swell and pull of the magic on her body; instead she was
only conscious of the feel of him, his chest against her own. Of his
strong arm which now encircled her and pressed her to him. Her tummy was doing
strange things, it felt like it had fallen into something warm and electrical.
What was happening to her? ‘Ohh!’ she groaned inwardly ‘I am so confused,
what’s happening! What would Inuyasha think if he knew of my thoughts? I feel
like I should only feel this way with him, but why have I never felt this
before?’ Kagome wrinkled her brow and turned her head down. She was not sure
what to think. Ever since the attack parts of her body and mind seemed to be
more awake and aware then they had ever been. ‘What did that damned sprite
do!?’ she wanted to scream out loud but swallowed the bellow within her throat
and instead focused more on how she was going to handle the TiaYoukai in her
own time.
Sesshomaru watched as
the emotions flitted across her face. He found him self slightly fascinated by
her, a mere human. He was aware that he had already deemed her worthy as a mate
to his brother, but he also found him self and his beast pondering if she would
be worthy of him as well. Well he was pondering it; his beast seemed to think
that he had seen enough to want her as his. But alas the TiaYoukai was not
ruled by his beast, and it would be his decision in the end. Not only that, but
his brother had already made a verbal claim on the miko. Did he really want to
fight his brother for the right to court a human? Sesshomaru frowned, why was
he even pondering such nonsense? The pull of the magic upon his person drew him
forth from his thoughts and he glanced around at the time slip. It felt to him
as though he were passing through empty space filled with stars. He felt
gravity take hold a second before he was expelled into the well once more.
Sesshomaru corrected his decent and landed gracefully without sound on the
bottom of the well.
Slightly confused,
Sesshomaru first glanced at the dirt, then the miko in his arms who seemed to
be trying to get out of his hold and then he glanced up and saw what appeared
to be a roof above the well. He quirked an eyebrow and looked at the miko. With
one graceful jump he cleared the rim of the well and stood to the side setting
the miko back down on her own feet.
Kagome smiled lightly
at him. “Welcome to my time, Sesshomaru-sama. The year is now 2006.” Kagome
turned on her heel and headed for the doorway; before she slid it open she
turned back to him and looked him in the eye before addressing him further.
“As you can
undoubtedly smell by now, the air in my time is polluted, poisoned and not at
all as clean as it once was. Along with the air the rest of the world has
changed just as much, the water, land, animals and insects on it. Youkai no
longer rule the world… well if they do they do so in secret. Humans have taken
over the planet now and with it our inventions. There are many things that you
are not going to understand right away, but lets just go with this little rule
of thumb: If I am not alarmed or worried or afraid of something, you should not
be either, just watch what I do and adjust your behavior as such. Do not be
fooled Sesshomaru-sama, here in my time there are many, many,
many different weapons available that incapacitate or outright kill
demons. I tell you this so that you may understand as fully as possible the
importance of you paying attention to what I say and how I act.” Kagome continued
to look at him and wait for some sort of acknowledgement to her words but there
was none forth coming. Sesshomaru just stood there and met her gaze head on,
waiting for her to continue on her way.
Having received no
further indication that he understood aside from his usual stoic gaze, Kagome
slid the door to the well house open and stepped outside. She resisted the urge
to call out for her family and stayed at Sesshomarus’ side. She gave Sesshomaru
a moment to take it all in and then started across the courtyard to the back
door of the shrine.
Sesshomaru followed
behind her. He could hear many new sounds that he had never before heard, a lot
of them hurt his ears, but he figured that just like his nose they would adjust
to the constant assault upon them after a while. He took in the massive
buildings in the distance that the humans had apparently built and marveled at
them somewhat. He was aghast to find that he smelled hundred of thousands of
people all around him. There were so many scents, sounds and things to look at
that Sesshomaru had to fight off a moment of dizziness and concentrate on just
following the miko in front of him. He entered her home and shut the door
behind him heaving a huge silent sigh of relief, when a lot of the noise and
smells dimmed considerably.
Now he could smell
only four distinct smells within this home, he assumed they were her family and
pet cat. Sesshomaru paused. ‘Did the miko not say that they did not run into
any other demons in her era other than Inuyasha when he came here? If that is
so, why is the scent of demons present here… the scents are old, perhaps a
month.’ Sesshomaru looked at the miko who was slipping off her slippers.
‘Why has Inuyasha not
picked up on the smells, perhaps his senses are too numbed to smell the old
scents?’ Sesshomaru frowned, and faced the miko.
“Miko, did you not
tell this Sesshomaru that you have not run into demons in this time? Clearly
there are other demon scents present, even though they are older.” Sesshomaru
stated as he eyed her suspiciously.
Kagome swallowed and
looked at him. “Other demon scents…?” She echoed his words back to him in a
faint whisper. She cleared her throat that felt like it was suddenly
tightening. “Ahem, wha, what kinds of other demons.. ho, how many other scents?” Her eyes were steadily taking on
a more startled appearance.
Sesshomaru felt her
aura and power spiking tremendously, and realized that she was inadvertently
triggering her miko powers and searching for other demons in the near by
vicinity. He could feel his aura being pushed back and then surrounded by hers
and his beast roared at the unintended challenge the miko was presenting. He
suppressed the urge to meet the challenge with his claws, and instead gave the
miko the answers she was asking for.
“Yes, other demons.
Five that I can tell… Their scents seem to be coming from that direction.” He
raised his arm and pointed towards the front of the shrine. He saw Kagome
follow his finger in the direction he pointed.
Kagome paused and then
headed to the front of the shrine home; she stopped by the front door and the
stairs heading upstairs. “Where do they go from here?” She asked him as she
schooled her face and tensed her body waiting for the answer. “Why don’t you
just show me where, I’ll follow you? Please don’t kill any humans that you may
come across, chances are they are my family.” Kagome gave a tight fake little
laugh that she did not feel.
Sesshomaru arched his
brow at her and then led her up the stairs and into a room that reeked of
Kagome. ‘Must be her quarters.’ He thought to him
self. He crossed the room and stood before a window that had some sort of see
through rock or something on it. He lifted his hand and prepared to break
through the window when he heard the miko cry out.
“Wait! I can open it
without smashing it to bits.” She walked around Sesshomaru and lifted the
window up. She had long ago removed any screen that she had; it was just
pointless trying to keep one with Inuyasha slicing them to bits all the time.
Sesshomaru watched as
she lifted the clear material up and locked it into place so it would not fall
back down. He then sniffed a few times and looked around her room. He saw the
miko fidget slightly and smirked at him self. “The scents come from this window
and go to that, what I assume to be a desk, there. They exit and enter through
this window; it seems that they have come at various times, never together at
once.” Sesshomaru stated as he looked at the tree outside her window. “They
seem to be worthy adversaries…” His gaze slid back over her and took in her
shallow complexion and slight shake of her hands.
“The Shikon Shards…
They must be drawn to the shards. Oh Kami, what if they hurt my family? I
shouldn’t bring them back here, I should leave. I’ve put them all in danger!
What have I done!?” Kagome could feel her eyes stinging and her blood beginning
to pump faster through her veins. She knew she was going to hyperventilate but
she could not stop her self. She swallowed big gulps of air at a time but it
never seemed to be enough, she could hear the TiaYoukai calling her name or
rather her title since he had rarely ever used anything other than ‘miko’. Her
vision became black around the edges and she felt the world begin to spin and
tip and then all was black.
He watched as the miko
hyperventilated before him. He called out to her not to faint, he commanded her
not to faint on him. “Do Not faint on
this Sesshomaru, Miko!” He demanded and as he did so, he watched as her eyes
rolled upwards and her body tipped backwards. He clenched his jaw and grabbed
the miko by her shoulders guiding her limp body down to her bed.
He was disgruntled to
say the least. He had been sitting in the tree outside her window for roughly
half an hour now and the miko had yet to show any signs of waking up. His ears
twitched slightly as he heard one of those metal things coming closer to the
shrine. Twisting in his seat he watched as one stopped on the Shrine grounds
spewed three people out from within it.
Sniffing the air
slightly he weeded out the other smells from the three humans who were approaching
the shrine. All three smelled slightly like Kagome. Deciding that this must be
her family since they matched the other human smells that resided in the home,
he sat back on his branch and watched them enter the house. Before the door
closed the smallest of the three humans, a boy paused in the door way and
turned his head slightly in his own direction. Sesshomaru felt the faint
whispers of energy… holy energy, lap against his own aura and then withdraw to
disappear completely as the boy closed the door to the Shrine.
Sesshomaru scrunched
his eyes slightly at the now closed door. ‘The miko did not say anything about
a holy man within her family, only that her grandfather did not have any power.
Don’t tell me this is something that she is not aware of. How oblivious to her
surroundings is she? Is her fake sense of security so strong that she does not
pay any attention to her surrounding at all? This plants doubt on her
deductions on the fate of Youkai within this time period. Obviously they are
still around.’ Sesshomaru swung his eyes back at the mikos window and saw to
his relief that she was now shifting about on her bed slightly. With a leap he
was outside her window and crawling in when her door suddenly blew open and the
young man stood there glowering at him.
Sesshomaru stood tall
and proud and met the boys glare with one of his own. He saw the miko turn over
in her bed out of the corner of his eye and knew that she was waking up. The
boys hands exploded in bright white light and he braced him self in a fighting
stance.
“Whatever you may
want, you will not get it! Leave my sisters room and no harm shall come to
you.” He stated as he let his spiritual power flood the room.
Sesshomaru was a
little surprised at the strength the boy was giving off. The only other person
he had felt lately to give off more raw power than the boy was the miko, who
was now rubbing her groggy eyes and trying valiantly
to wake up.
“This Sesshomaru will
not leave until the miko is ready.” He stated as he watched the boy tense.
Sesshomaru released
his jaki and felt his aura spread out around him, he filled the room with his
power and felt as it burst forth through the window and door filling the house
and grounds of the Shrine with his power. His hair was lifted from his
shoulders and back as the force of his powers stirred the air around him
whipping his clothing and hair.
Sota was awed into
complete stillness. He had never come up against a demon of this strength
before. He glanced at Kagome and saw her sit straight up in bed, her own miko
energy bursting forth in response to the demons. Sota called out her name and
watched as she looked from him to the demon before the two of them. He felt her
energy spike beyond anything he had felt before as her power clashed with that
of the youkais’.
Sesshomaru paused, the
force of the siblings power together was beyond anything he had felt before in
terms of holy power. For the first time in his existence he wundered at the
strength of humans. His eyes Shifted from the boys to the mikos. “Miko.” He grated out. “You will cease your challenge to
this Sesshomaru unless you wish to do battle.
Kagome jerked in her
bed, she shifted her gaze from Sota to Sesshomaru. ‘What was happening?’ “You
swore to me, that you would harm no humans if I brought you here. It looks like
you are about to attack my little brother.” Kagome said as she looked at Sota and
him. “Sota, get out of here, Now!” She commanded him.
She did not take her eyes off of Sesshomarus. She could feel their energy and
auras colliding, she struggled against his awesome force but new innately that
although she appeared to be holding her own against the TiaYoukai she was not
his match in strength. She doubted anyone with holy power would ever be.
“This Sesshomaru has
not gone back on his word.” His voice grated out while his face as always
betrayed nothing.
Kagome paused and
stared into Sesshomarus’ eyes trying desperately to see any sign of falsehood.
‘Since when would the great Sesshomaru besmirch him self by telling lies?’ She
thought to her self. Then she actually turned and looked at Sota. ‘Since when
did Sota become a monk!?’ She could feel her eyes grow in size slightly. ‘Oh
kami, no one knows that I’ve brought Sesshomaru here, what must Souta be
thinking?’ Kagome looked at Sesshomaru again; it was a stand off between the
three of them. She would have to be the first one to make a sign of peace.
Kagome closed her eyes and called her energy and aura back to her self.
Sota was dumbfounded.
“Kagome, what are you doing!? Don’t leave yourself open; don’t you feel his
jaki, his power?” Sota exclaimed at his sister in exasperation.
Sesshomaru inwardly
sighed as Kagome backed down, while on the outside his appearance did not
change. He did not recall his power; he continued to let it flow forth. If he
were to unleash everything and take on his true form, his power, his jaki would
be even more potent. However he did not feel the need to do so, firstly he did
not think that the miko would appreciate her home being torn to pieces.
Kagome stood up
abruptly and placed her self in front of Sesshomaru. “Sota, stop it.” Was all
she said to her little brother.
Sota was baffled, but
the moment she stood in front of Sesshomaru he reigned in his spiritual power
and stood before her. “Kagome, what’s going on, do you know this demon?”
Kagome breathed a sigh
of relief when Sesshomarus’ jaki cleared the room and grounds surrounding them.
“Kami, can’t a girl faint just a little around here, without Armageddon taking
place?” She moved to the side and gestured to Sota. “Lord Sesshomaru, this is
Sota my little brother.” Then she gestured to Sesshomaru. “Sota this is Lord
Sesshomaru, Inuyashas’ brother.”
“Half
brother.”
Sesshomaru interjected “He may appear to be full demon at the moment, but he is
still only half my blood.”
Kagome rolled her eyes
slightly and continued on, unperturbed by his input. “I brought him here when
he asked to see my home.” Kagome watched as Sotas’ face became a pale shade of
paper.
“You and I, my dear
brother, have a lot of talking to do.” Kagome addressed her brother through
thin unimpressed lips. ‘They’re hiding things from me.’ She felt her insides
clench slight with the realization. ‘Not even my family thinks I am strong
enough to handle the truth.’
Kagome walked towards
her bedroom door and turned slightly. “Sesshomaru-sama, you are welcome to join
us since you have already informed me of the presence of demons within the
shrine grounds.” Kagome walked out of her room. ‘Where is my mother?’ She left
her brother and Sesshomaru to do whatever while she walked to the kitchen in
search of her mother.
Sesshomaru paused then
made to followed her down stairs and to the kitchen after a moment of assessing
her brother. “Are all members of your family endowed with such power?”
Sesshomaru asked him as he stepped by him. He heard Sota clear his throat slightly
before he replied.
“The Higurashi line is
long and true and well known for producing strong Shrine guardians.
Unfortunately our powers never bloom or appear until we are fifteen. Kagome has
been gone for the majority of this year… she has not seen me use mine before
this night.” With that Sota walked to his room and closed the door, while
Sesshomaru joined the women in the kitchen. Sota himself would join them as
well in a few minutes.
Sesshomaru stood just
inside the kitchen doorway as Kagome introduced him to her mother. He nodded
once in greeting to Mrs. Higurashi and was about to take a seat when he froze.
“Demon be Gone!”
An old voice shouted in his left ear as a slip of paper that looked like an
ofuda was plastered to the back of his head. Sesshomaru could see the red that
tinged the outer edges of his vision. He felt his chest rumbling slightly and
realized that he must be growling. He turned slowly to face the old man who
kept slapping useless ofudas to his hair until he looked him in the eye. The old
mans complexion became instantly paper white and he froze in mid swing with
another useless ofuda. “You dare challenge this Sesshomaru.” His voice
grated out.
“Sesshomaru, remember
your promise!” A clear and strong voice rang from behind him. Sesshomaru blinked
and cleared his vision of redness. He turned back to the miko and her mother
and glowered slightly. Then as he looked the old fool of a man in the eyes he
peeled the ofudas out of his hair and melted them with his poisoned claws.
Sufficiently satisfied at the old mans smell of utter fear in the face of the
TiaYoukia, he took a seat at the table with the miko. He briefly wondered how
one small family could be so tiresome. Never in hundreds of years had any one
family dared treat him thusly, it was disconcerting and he had to wonder… was
he loosing his touch? No, it was the mikos family who were the odd balls. He
was quite sure that any one else would not have the audacity to challenge him
as they were prone to and expect to live. Then again, the miko did say
something about not being exposed to demons before Inuyasha…
Sesshomaru looked at
the miko before him and stood up once more. “Miko, this Sesshomaru is returning
to the feudal era. I will await your return at the well clearing.” And with
that Sesshomaru stood up and made his way back out to the well he had come
through.
Kagome stared after
him for a second before turning back to her family, her face held disbelief and
embarrassment. “I can not believe this family.” She stated through clenched
teeth. “I bring Inuyasha’s brother home to show him our time, so he won’t think
I am a liar on my origins and what happens? FIRST, he tells me that he smells
other demons that have come and gone from the shrine. THEN I faint because
apparently they are pretty damned interested in my room! AND THEN, Sota comes
out of no where and prepares to do battle with him, a TIAYUKAI, Who could kill
him in a second if he so wished. BUT THEN AGAIN, WHEN
the hell did Sota become a powerful Monk!? As if all this were not bad enough,
grandpa had to go and play the fool!” Kagome threw a glare at her grandfather.
“When are you going to realize, that you DO NOT have sacred power!?” She
demanded.
Her grandpa met her
gaze for a moment and then flicked it off in another direction. He set his jaw firmly
and walked out of the room without a word to anyone.
Kagome deflated as she
watched her grandpa turn and leave. “I don’t know what to expect anymore. I am
surprised that I am still surprised by anything at this point.” She huffed and
glanced at her mother. “So… is there anything else I don’t know about that I
would want to?” She raised her eye brow in question at her mom.
Mrs. Higurashi looked
at her daughter and glanced at the door after her father in law and back to her
daughter. “There is much you do not know of yet Kagome.”
Kagome continued to
stare at her mother as shame and trepidation began to seep into her skin. Mrs.
Higurashi could see plainly by the look on her daughters face that she was
regretting loosing her temper on her grandfather already. Her daughter had
always been raised to respect her elders; especially her grandfather who had
taken them in and cared for them after his son had passed away.
She approached her
daughter and slowly encircled her within her arms. “Kagome, so many things have
happened since you first entered the well, and pretty much all of it has been
kept from you.”
Kagome shifted in her
mothers embrace to rest her head more comfortably on her shoulder, she was not
sure what was coming but for some reason, she had a sense of impending doom
leering at her from a close but distant horizon that seemed to be speeding ever
faster towards her.
“I know that you want
answers to your questions, I know that you are confused and that a lot has
happened over the passed few weeks to you, but please you must listen to me and
not question what I am about to tell you. I want you to swear that you will do
as I ask you to before I say anything further.”
Kagome backed away
from her mother slightly and looked her in the eyes. She could see the
seriousness of her mothers’ words. “But...” She went to protest as her mother
shushed her with a shake of her head.
“You must first
promise me Kagome.” Mrs. Higurashi said as she looked at her daughters’ eyes
and saw the inner battle taking place.
“Promise
Kagome.”
Mrs. Higurashi insisted as she waited for her daughters’ word.
“I promise to do as
you ask of me momma.” Kagome felt so many emotions swirling within her but most
of all she was overwhelmed and confused. With a heavy heart and more than a
little trepidation she agreed to do as her mother wanted.
