Sesshoumaru, hidden in the dark, waited patiently at the top of the
stairs, listening. Nearly thirty more minutes had passed. Finally, the
bathroom door opened and he could hear Rin sniffle across the hall and
back into her room. The bedroom door closed.
For a long time, he waited. That was all he could do.
===============
Rin, drying her hair with the big soft towel, went to the bed and
sat down. Her eyes burned and her throat was sore. At least the toothpaste
got rid of the awful taste. Sighing, she dropped the towel on the floor
and lay down to bundle up in the blankets, making sure it almost
covered her head with only a small hole to breathe out of.
It was late, probably nine or so, but sleep wouldn't come.
Instead, that horrible feeling kept burning inside. It didn't make sense.
She should feel better
now. This place was much better than her old house, and old room. She could
eat anytime she wanted, go anywhere in the house, take a bath every day. She
was free.
No.
She wasn't really free.
She was a dog demon's mate now. She was his to do as he pleased with.
It was only a matter of time till he made her.....
Demons were impatient. Well, most of them. Most of the bullies at school
were demons. Some of them harassed her on a daily basis, calling her
names and picking on her.
Why? Why did that inu youkai mark her? To punish her? Punish her for
trespassing? For stealing?
Even though warm under the covers, she shivered, remembering how his
claws had dug into her arms, how he growled in her ear, jerking her, painfully
sinking his teeth....
Rin closed her eyes. She didn't want to be here. Every day she would have to
be around him. Every day she would meet people who knew what he would be doing
to her. Every day she would see it in their eyes. And they all would know what
her father had done. How her father had.....
No.
She couldn't live like this.
Everyone knew.
Rin woke. All night she had tried to sleep but it only came in bits.
The pain inside was burning terribly now. By the light of the window, it
was close to dawn. She got out of bed and grabbed the cloth bag Kaede had
brought. It was big enough so Rin packed it with Teddy, two sets of clothes and
other small items.
She wanted to go and pack some food from the kitchen but didn't want to
chance waking the dog demon. Hopefully he was the kind of demon that slept
and was still sleeping upstairs. She dressed in a pair of jeans and dark
blue blouse that mostly covered her arms and the bite mark. After
putting on some socks and a pair of
tennis shoes, she grabbed the bag, went to the window,
opened it, then slipped out.
The sun was not quite breaking just yet. It was cool and dim but Rin
could see fine.
She quickly went to the fence, moved the loose board, then slipped
through.
The second she was in the woods, her heart began to pound heavily and
she glanced back a few times while hurrying through the trees.
After a few moments, she began to relax some. She came to the pond where
she had gotten the fish with the net. Not stopping, she kept moving
and found the trail that led to the road. Finally, she stepped to the pavement
and looked back to see she was at least a half mile from the house.
Calming down, she began to walk. Hopefully she would be long gone before
the dog demon would realize she was missing.
"Rin."
Rin froze, hearing his voice directly behind. She didn't turn
around as the thumping of her heart pounded in her ears.
She didn't know what to do. Would he try to stop her? Would he grab her and
drag her back? What would happen when he took her back? How would he
punish her? Dark spots dotted her vision and Rin fought to gain control
of her racing heart and choppy breathing.
"Where are you going?" He asked, his words were low and quiet.
"I...." She tried but couldn't. What could she say to him?
"Are you leaving?" This time his words were closer to a whisper.
Rin nodded. She wanted to run but knew he would catch her.
"Why?"
She began to tremble, fighting fear, fighting that horrible agony that
never stopped and continued to get worse, burning in her gut. She didn't
want to stay. She wanted to leave, to be alone, to go where no one knew....
"I....I...." She stuttered, afraid of him.
"You fear me." The statement was flat and cold.
Rin swallowed heavily before pushing words from her mouth. "I want to
go away and be alone."
For a long time, Rin stood there waiting as a light wind blew through
the trees and morning birds chirped softly among the swaying branches.
"If that is what you wish."
Rin slowly turned her head, chancing a glance, only to see the dog
demon walking away, his long white hair almost blending in with the long
white clothes he wore. The sun's rays were peaking, catching hints of
silver in the white. She turned around completely and watched him as
a cool wind danced about her clothes and hair. That cool breeze pushed passed
only to follow the departing inu youkai and lightly play with the flowing
waves of pearl.
His last words....
The whisper of them lingered.....
Rin turned from the sight of him and continued walking away.
----------------------
The sun was high in the sky by the time she came to a quick stop
on the left side of the road. The parking lot only had one car but
the neon sign in front said 'open'. She walked across the concrete, passed
the gas pumps, and to the
tall glass doors. She entered to the smell of
coffee and fried foods. Her stomach growled as she glanced about the shelves
of potato chips, peanuts, drinks, and candy. Rin frowned, wishing she had
money to pay for something to eat. There was a guy at the counter reading
a newspaper, but he
didn't look up. Hoping he didn't pay too much attention to her, she
went all the way to the back of the store to the bathroom. After using it,
she hurried out of the store.
Needing a rest, Rin walked to the far side of the gas station, onto
the grass, and sat down under the shade of a large oak tree. The
twisting roots just above ground gave her a nice little curved-in
seat. After putting the bag down, she laid her head on her knees and
closed her eyes, resting, as a delicate breeze tickled her cheek.
It was still there of course, gnawing through her insides and burning
almost to a sickly ache. Kaede and InuYasha both told her this feeling
wouldn't go away unless she accepted the dog demon in every way,
but she knew that would never happen. So. This feeling, which was eating
her from the inside out would eventually....
Wouldn't death be better?
Better than living day to day with a demon who would...who would...
Scenes flashed behind closed lids: images of the inu youkai
attacking, snatching with powerful claws, shaking her hard before
sinking sharp canine teeth into her skin.
Sucking in a sharp gasp, Rin sat up with wide eyes.
Maybe death would be better.
Sighing, Rin picked up the bag, stood, then headed back to the road.
Soon, the quick stop was far behind and the paved road seemed to go
on forever. As she walked, Rin studied the trees, noting several
big oaks. Maybe she could find a hollow one for the night and bundle up inside
it with some leaves for warmth.
While figuring out a place for shelter, Rin heard a car. Suddenly alert,
she scampered off the road and into the bushes. With quick movement, she
hid out of sight, close to the ground, peeking out through the branches.
The car sped by too fast for her to see what kind it was or who was in it.
Feeling tired and wary, she moved farther back into the trees and lightly
stepped into a cozy clearing surrounded by shadowing oaks, curtained willows,
and a few green cedars. Choosing one of the towering oaks, she sat and
rested her back against the rounded bark. Rin closed her eyes. Wind whispered
and crickets chirped. It sounded so good, so peaceful. Darkness called,
pulling her into a deep pit of nothingness.
"I finally found my little mouse."
Rin's eyes shot open at the sound of a voice she knew too well.
In an instant she was scrambling to run only to fail as a crushing
grip seized her arms. Her feet left the ground right before pain
shot through her back and head. Unable to hold it back, she cried out as the
bark of the tree ground into the sore wounds on her back.
"He Ha He Ha." The demon laughed, spitting his horrible breath on her
face. "Did you hear, brother? The girl squeaks!
Think I can make her scream louder?"
Tears burned. Why? Why? She was almost free.
"I heard, Monten. It seems my little fuck toy has become more vocal."
Again, the fat, ugly thunder demon slung her around. Pain smashed into
her shoulder and arm as she hit hard dirt. Rin tried to move but was unable.
Suddenly, she was yanked then looking up at the dark blue blurry sky.
Tears rolled down, wetting her cheeks.
Hiten's grinning face blotted out the sky. "Where have you been? I've been
looking for you since school let out." His hand went under her shirt.
"Remember the fun we had last summer?" He grabbed her breast and squeezed.
"Remember?"
Rin closed her eyes and whimpered. No. She had tried to forget.
With pulling jerks upward, he ripped her shirt. "Seems like someone else
has been fucking you up." Then he stopped pawing. "What the Hell? Shit!
You're marked!"
Two hands closed around her throat and pulled, raising her back slightly
off the ground. "Who the Hell marked you?! It looks like a fucking
dog bite! Are you a dog's bitch now?!" Hiten hissed.
She tried to answer but all that came out was low choking sobs.
Her head hit the ground when he let go.
"The fucking mutt will smell us on you." He growled. "Monten!"
"What is it, brother?"
"Watch her. I've got to go back to the car and get something."
Eyes still closed, Rin heard Hiten walk away. She didn't open them. She
didn't want to see Monten's ugly face.
