A/N: (2/19/10) This and the quick run-through I did on the first chapter of Windcry concludes the first round of serious revisions. Haven't decided what will comprise the next batch yet. I'm thinking maybe chapters 2-5 of Windcry… and anything else that takes my notice. Don't think it's a very good idea to try to do all of it at once… I'm sure you guys would like some new material at some point. That's assuming you folks who have already read this are reading it again. O.O And I'm well aware what it means to assume. Well… for readers old and new—anyone who pays my drivel any attention at all—hope you enjoy and, as always, thanks for reading! :)
Chapter 4
Kagura was ready to burst with child. Sesshoumaru held Kikyou captive. He agreed to free her under one condition: that she act as midwife when it came time for Kagura to birth his child.
The labor was much more excruciating than she had anticipated but the pressure in her belly finally lifted in that last horrible push. She could tell something was wrong by the look on Sesshoumaru's face. His expression started with wide eyes and slightly dropped jaw. Shock. It quickly turned sour when his 'o' of surprise closed to a sneer. Anger.
"It's a boy." Kikyou hardly sounded celebratory.
"What's wrong?" Kagura pleaded. " Why won't you let me see?"
Kikyou held the little boy up so that Kagura could see him. He bore the markings of his father, light-skinned, tousled hair of silvery-white framing his pretty face. But something wasn't right. Kagura knew what it was then, little dog ears and thick brows like-
"This cannot be." Sesshoumaru glared. "I cannot have a child that mirrors my idiot half-brother so. I will not tolerate it!" He stood and drew Toukijin. Light burst from him, raging toward the two women and the child, a terrible din as they were enveloped by the light…
Kagura awoke with a gasp, sweat pouring down her face, stinging eyes flicking about the campsite. Kikyou was nowhere to be seen. Nor was Sesshoumaru. No child either. She held a quivering hand in front of her face. Get a grip, Kagura.
She sat up with a hiss, a sharp pain burrowing from her neck into her shoulders as she surveyed her surroundings, still by the tree where Sesshoumaru had calmed her tears with his embrace. Gah, no more sleeping against trees, she thought, making her way to her feet.
She staggered to the campfire, the only other person around (if one could call him a person) Sesshoumaru's loyal imp vassal. He sat silently stoking the fire, buggy yellow eyes lifting as she approached and quickly averted when she sat down across from him.
"Where are Sesshoumaru and Rin?" she asked.
"Rin is searching for roots. I don't know where Lord Sesshoumaru is," he sniped, narrowing his large eyes on the flames between them. "Probably on another canvass of the area to make sure you didn't bring any trouble."
"Heh," she laughed wryly, rubbing her neck. "Always a pleasure, Jaken."
"I'm only looking out for my master. The last thing he needs is to be distracted by a woman."
"Oh no, better he be distracted by a young child or a bumbling fool of a servant who are always getting into trouble and needing rescue. Besides, your lord can certainly take care of himself." She lowered her eyes, absently fingering the little flowers tucked among the grass. "He knows what he is doing."
Jaken lifted his eyes to her, presumably to glare, a brow raised in confusion instead. "What is that?" He pointed to the string of flat square objects hanging out of the front of her kimono.
"Oh, these?" Kagura drew them out, laying them across one hand. "Kagome gave them to me."
"What are they for?"
"Well, as far as I understand, they're to protect me from..." She met eyes with him over the fire, thinking better of processing their purpose out loud, particularly in response to the nosy imp's query. "Receiving a certain thing from your lord." Then again, maybe if Sesshoumaru had some idea of her efforts toward contraception, he might be a little more… receptive to her advances. "The vegetation inside is placed on his sword, if you get my drift," she continued, "and prevents his seed from being sown."
Jaken took the objects from Kagura in order to better view them, tearing one from the string and returning her the rest. "Interesting. Excuse me," he said, making his way to his feet. He stumbled from the fire, slipping from view beyond the trees.
"Hm," Kagura mused aloud. "Weird little creature."
(000000)
"Lord Sesshoumaru! Lord Sesshoumaru!"
The imp came running like a maniac, looking every direction but straight ahead. He collided with Sesshoumaru's knees, falling flat on his back, taking due note of the annoyance in his master's face and getting to his feet with a shake of his little green head. "Lord Sesshoumaru!" he squealed.
"I heard you the first time, Jaken," Sesshoumaru sighed, flipping his long hair over his shoulder. "What is it?"
"I have something to tell you concerning Lady Kagura."
The demon lord ignored his vassal's presumption in titling her so, at the same time feeling his pulse quicken at the idea of something happening to her. He sniffed the air for any sign of trouble, of blood—of Naraku—finding only her sweetening scent on the wind and that of the fire by which she sat. "What is the matter? I scent no danger."
"It is not her I believe to be in danger."
Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes on the imp. "Then who?"
Jaken drew the square parcel from his robes, holding it up for his master to see. "She has a whole string of these, given to her by InuYasha's wench."
The daiyoukai took the package, giving it little more than a cursory glance. "So? The wench is always bringing strange things back from her world." He turned it in his fingers. "Probably some kind of food."
"No, my lord." Jaken shook his head furiously. "It is not. It's a bewitchment—a charm of some sort—meant to keep you at a safe distance from her."
Sesshoumaru cocked a thin brow, almost laughing. Leave it to Jaken to come up with such silliness. "You waste my time, Jaken." He tossed the parcel at him, the durex landing between them on the ground. "You are blind if you cannot see the witch has designs on the precise opposite."
"No!" he insisted, picking up the small package and shaking it at his lord. "You don't understand, she told me! Herself."
"Why would she tell you a thing like that?"
"I don't know, milord. Perhaps because I asked what it was?"
Sesshoumaru let out a frustrated sigh, his weight shifted from one foot to the other. "What did she say exactly?"
Oh shit. He couldn't remember exactly. But what he did remember would suffice in filling in the blanks. "She aimed to put this on your sword." He shook the parcel at him again. "Said it was to protect her from receiving a certain thing from you, that she would be 'safe' then."
He didn't know what to believe, Jaken wasn't making sense. But he was never one to make up tales either. "Did she happen to say what that certain thing was?"
The imp searched his memory, froggy eyes darting about. "Something about you sowing your seed… whatever that means."
He snatched the parcel back from his vassal, tearing open the wrapper. "To which sword is it supposed to be applied?"
"Her lack of mention must have indicated your birthright—the Tenseiga."
Sesshoumaru plucked the sticky, unpleasant-smelling contents from its package and handed it to Jaken, tossing the wrapper aside as he drew Tenseiga. "Jaken." He knelt down to his level, turning Tenseiga's hilt toward him. "Do you see where it rolls up?"
"Yes, my lord."
"Roll it onto Tenseiga's hilt."
"Yes, my lord!"
"If she truly wants to deter me, so be it."
(000000)
"I'm sorry, I'm afraid I'm not very good at this."
"It's okay." Rin beamed impossibly wide. "Everyone has to learn sometime. I'll eat the burnt one."
The bright sky began to dim behind the trees and, still, Sesshoumaru had yet to return. Jaken sat nearby, watching them intently as Rin served the fish she taught Kagura to cook, his gaze fixed mainly on the former wind sorceress, as if he knew something she didn't. Finally, the youkai lord came through the trees, sitting across the fire beside his vassal.
"Everything all right out there?" Kagura asked without looking up, her attention too focused on her food. "You were gone a long time."
She lifted her eyes when she received no response, finding Sesshoumaru glaring at the fire.
"Lady Kagura cooked dinner," Rin noted cheerfully. "Please, try some."
His expression soured that much further as his eyes flicked to the wind user. "I'm not hungry."
Kagura sat back, unable to help but notice the familiar membrane covering Tenseiga's hilt as she looked him over. "Um… Sesshoumaru… what's on your sword?"
She knew very well what it was, his stare told her, a shudder slinking down her spine at its intensity.
"Master Jaken, perhaps we should go find more firewood." Rin stood, pulling at his sleeve when he paid her no mind. "Master Jaken!"
"All right, all right, I'm coming!" He stumbled to his feet. "Can we go nowhere without you tugging on me?" He skittered behind her into the woods, leaving Sesshoumaru and Kagura alone.
She stared at him blankly, crimson eyes wide, willing him to say something—anything—no matter how afraid she was of what it might be. She silently cursed Jaken as he in turn stared at her silence, the little imp's motives more than apparent now. "Sesshoumaru… I don't know what Jaken said but it can't be what you think."
He rolled the love charm off the hilt of his sword, tossing it into the fire. "Tell InuYasha's wench her powers are as weak as ever. This charm does not work, at least not on a youkai of my standing."
"Well." She held back a laugh, smiling in spite of herself. "In all fairness, it's not being used the way it's supposed to be."
"Perhaps you could enlighten me then," he said, wiping the goo from his hands. "How has its use been misconstrued?"
"Well, first off, you had it on the wrong sword."
"Very well then. I put it on Toukijin and then what happens?"
Despite her best efforts, a little titter escaped her. "No, my lord, it goes on your other sword."
Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes, clearly not amused.
Kagura let out a sigh, her head dropped in her hands. "Not exactly the way I wanted this to come out… sooo embarrassing."
"Wanted what to come out?"
She wiped the tears budding in her eyes, raising her head with another sigh. "I've loved you for a long time," she sniffed, still wiping her cheeks. "A very long time."
"What does that have to do with the charms?"
Her head fell again, Kagura chewing her lip. "I thought maybe—some day, one day—you might feel the same, but I didn't exactly think you would want to risk a hanyou child.
Sesshoumaru's expression softened. "So, in truth, the charms were meant to protect me."
"You could say that." She laughed wryly, knowing he still didn't quite grasp what she was saying. "Your bloodline, yes, but not necessarily your heart."
The mention of his heart clammed him up again, his lips pressed tightly between his teeth.
"How pathetic this is." Kagura caught her face in her hands once more, brushing her hair back from her face. "That I'm in this position, trying to convince you of feelings you only just the other day denied the capacity to feel." She dropped her hands to her lap, eyes reconnecting with his above the fire with renewed purpose. "But what have I got to lose?" She stood and walked around the fire, the inuyoukai too rising to his feet, the fire in her eyes as she stood before him nearly knocking him back on his rear. "I've seen it at work, you know? The remarkable things it does. It is perhaps the most powerful emotion, stronger even than hate, and you know what I say is true because I was once merely an extension of Naraku's love-hate for Kikyou. It brings people to fight that much harder, keeps them alive even in the most dire of circumstances. Now." She searched his eyes. "Does that denote weakness?"
Maybe that did not denote weakness but his knees certainly did. If only to restore his balance, he grabbed the wind user around the waist and pulled her to him.
She laughed against his chest, a few more tears slipping from her eyes as she lifted her face to his in the fading light, a warm kiss pressed to his lips as night's dark shroud fell over the forest, the stars twinkling above them.
"What of your charms?" he breathed when their kiss parted.
"You'll see," she grinned, touching her lips to his again. His mouth opened under hers as he loosed her hair, his hand trailing with it down her back. His hunger pangs at last stood to be satiated, Kagura satisfying one of her own, fingers winding into his snowy locks. She pulled at his armor and he slipped it from his body, allowing her to pull him to the ground, straddling him where the source of his hunger pressed between her legs. The string of small connected square packages fell beside him as she opened her pretty layers, an even prettier sight beneath; smooth creamy skin that just begged to be touched. He slid her kimono from her shoulders, his hand gliding along her curves as the garments pooled in his lap. She shivered, bending to kiss him, his fingers drifting over the smooth raised texture of the spider-shaped scar on her back.
Not even for power had he had this desire, this welcomed loss of control. Not once in his seven centuries. Not until now.
His hand slid up her thigh, coming to rest on her naked hip. "Have you ever been here before?"
Kagura hesitated, shaking her head.
"Are you afraid?" His lips chased hers.
"A little."
He steadied her face before his, fingers tucked gently beneath her chin. "Don't be," he breathed, kissing her deeply.
(000000)
"My." Jaken leaned forward from the tree he and Rin were resting by, squinting towards camp. "He must be really letting her have it, judging from all her carrying on back there."
"Master Jaken, it's very rude to eavesdrop," Rin scolded. "Besides, you don't really think he'd hurt Lady Kagura, do you?"
"Whatever she deserves…" He leaned back, pushing his hat over his face. "Kagura will get what's coming to her."
(000000)
Sesshoumaru wrapped them in the mokomoko, a cool breeze licking at their sweat and saliva sticky skin. They curled their bodies beneath the fur's warm shelter, facing each other, Kagura threading her fingers with his between them.
"Am I imagining things?" She searched his face. "Or are you smiling? I mean, it's barely perceptible but… yeah. I don't think I have ever seen you smile before."
"Is that so hard to believe?"
"Well… yeah."
He shifted among the fluff, the pelt curling more closely around her. "I smile when the situation warrants it."
She laughed softly, the mirth falling from her face as her eyes drifted to what remained of his left arm. "InuYasha?"
He nodded, his side of the mokomoko extending in order to cover it.
"You two are on the same side now," she said, eyes grave when they met his again. "An enemy in common greater than any bad blood between you. But no more talk of that." She lifted a hand to his cheek. "Not now."
"If not now when?"
She let her hand fall between them. "You can't be serious."
"I can imagine nothing more serious. And this." He squeezed her hand. "Will no doubt only further complicate things."
Her brow furrowed. "How do you figure?"
"Has it never occurred to you, in all his cunning, that this was all in accordance with his plan?"
Kagura scrunched her face. "You think he planned this?"
"Is it so farfetched to believe Naraku wanted to use you to get to me?"
"Or you to get to me."
Sesshoumaru absently gave her hand another squeeze, searching her averted eyes. "What do you mean?"
The mokomoko slid from her body as she sat up, Kagura letting go of his hand in order to gather it around her. "If Kagome hadn't given me those charms…"
"Kagura?"
"It was a variable he didn't consider. Even Naraku can't think of everything. In the absence of those events—of those charms—it is possible I could conceive your child, a child likely some part human, for which he would not expect you to let the child or me live."
Sesshoumaru sat up, letting the mokomoko fall away from him and further surround Kagura, touching the burn-scar on her back. She shied away from his fingers, eventually leaning into his hand when he wouldn't give up. "As you said," he breathed close. "Even he cannot think of everything."
She turned, eyes widening on his. "What do you mean?"
"Do you retain nothing I say? As long as you are with me, there is no place safer."
Kagura smiled, fighting a losing battle against her burgeoning tears. "Can't very well defend myself, can I?"
He tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, thumbing her cheek. "To have your powers stolen from you—the very fabric of your being ripped away—a flood of emotions in their stead… a lot to take to say the least."
She stood, wrapping the mokomoko around her as she stepped into the breeze, the sudden zephyr warm on her skin. "Only when I feel the wind. Only then do I think I would trade anything in the world to have my stolen abilities returned." She turned, her hair winding around her as she knelt before him, dropping the fur in favor of taking his face in her hands. "Anything but this."
(000000)
"I don't hear anything anymore." Jaken stumbled to his feet.
"Does that mean we can go back?"
The imp whirled toward the little girl, his staff gripped tightly in his hands. "You stay here, I'll go and check things out."
"But I want to come with you!"
"Rin, Lord Sesshoumaru will be very angry if you don't do as you're told!"
"Whatever you say, Master Jaken." Rin sank against the tree. "Good luck."
"Right." He turned, spearing the ground with his staff. "I'm going."
His vantage point didn't allow him much of a view as he passed through the brush that encircled their camp. He poked his head through the final set of bushes, froggy eyes going impossibly wide. There his lord lay by the fire, Kagura reclining beside him, fingers delicately tracing the sinewy contours of his lean torso.
"Lord Sesshoumaru," he gasped, running full tilt toward the canoodling twosome. "Don't tell me you've fallen under the spell of that evil woman—LORD SESSHOUMARU!"
Kagura let out a shriek, clutching the mokomoko to her chest. "Jaken, you little toad—get away!" She knocked him backward with a well-placed punch.
Sesshoumaru made his way to his feet, the mokomoko curling around his bare hips in the wind as he waited for his vassal to stand.
"Ack! My lord, where are your clo-" Jaken flew several feet back from the demon lord's foot.
"Jaken, your behavior today makes me doubt your fitness to carry the Staff of Two Heads."
Jaken crawled groveling to his master's feet. "My apologies, my lord. Please forgive me, my only wish is to serve you, and serve you well."
"Wow, it really is perfect," Kagura blurted from behind him. She put her hand over her mouth as Sesshoumaru turned, the daiyoukai eyeing her guilty expression curiously.
"Jaken." He faced the imp once more. "Go back to Rin before she sees this."
"Yes, my lord." Jaken bowed deeply, patting dirt from his robes as he stood. "Right away."
Kagura dropped back with a high-pitched sigh as the imp scurried back into the trees, Sesshoumaru walking to where their clothes lay, picking hers up and tossing them into her lap.
"Get dressed," he said, gathering his own.
She slowly put her arms through the sleeves of her colorful layers, tucking the string of small packages in the front of her kimono and tying it shut. Sesshoumaru was struggling with his armor when she looked up, though he fought harder not to show it, the act proving difficult with his missing arm.
"Here." She moved closer. "Let me help you."
Kagura shrugged off the look of shock and disgust he shot her, smiling softly as she reached for him. She straightened his pauldron and retied his sash around his waist, caught in his wistful gaze all the while. His face relaxed when she raised her own to regard him, her hands on his shoulders.
"There," she said, "You're all set."
He stood stiffly, as if he didn't know what to do, his head still ringing with the smell of sex, the air still thick with their combined scent.
She slipped her arms around him, his in turn closing around her, relishing the weight of his hand at the small of her back. "We're not moving too fast… are we?"
"Do you still feel the same?"
"Yes." She laid her head at his chest, careful of the spikes protruding from his armor.
His hand smoothed up her back, tangling in the soft tendrils of her hair. "If you know what you want, why dawdle?"
She lifted her head with a smile, brushing his lips with hers. "Good point."
He pursued her short retreat, Kagura deepening the kiss he planted. His arm tightened around her, hand drifting over her bottom.
"Let's not get this started again." She pulled away with a giggle. "I'm sure Rin would like to sleep at some point tonight. Let's go get her… and Jaken."
"Very well," Sesshoumaru sighed, putting a reluctant end to their embrace. Kagura gathered his hand into hers as they walked through the woods, the gesture strangely welcome, even as they approached the place his companions waited less than patiently.
Rin's face lit up as they arrived. "Lord Sesshoumaru, Lady Kagura!"
The youkai lord looked to the woman at his side, then back to the child so excited to see them. "When did all this 'Lady' business begin?"
He felt the hand he held fall limp in his hold as the imp cowered before him. "Allow me to be the first to ask forgiveness for our presumption, my lord."
"No apologies necessary." He tightened his grip of Kagura's hand, head held high. "Not to me, anyway."
The newly dubbed lady missed Jaken's sudden backward retreat, too astonished by her new title even to notice how he bowed out of reluctant respect, crimson eyes fixed on the glorious man at her side.
"You may both return to camp if you feel so inclined," he decreed.
There was some hesitation on their part, the little girl stepping closer, eyes of deep, chocolaty brown peering up at the lady. "Are you all right, my lady?"
Kagura's gaze shifted to the child, jaw still hanging slack. "I'm terrific. Why?"
Rin lowered her head. "We could hear your cries from here…"
"Umm…" The wind user wrinkled her nose. "Well…"
"Master Jaken insisted Lord Sesshoumaru was 'letting you have it-'"
"Oh, he was letting her have it, all right-"
"Jaken," Sesshoumaru scolded.
The imp fell into a full-body bow. "I'm sorry, my lord, it just slipped!"
"It's late," Kagura noted with a well-timed yawn. "We should probably all get some shuteye." She felt a tug on her arm as Sesshoumaru lowered himself to Rin's height, his hand freed from hers in favor of the child's shoulder.
"You should know I would never harm a woman," he told her.
Rin smiled. "I knew Master Jaken was full of it."
"Oh, he's full of it, all right," Kagura smirked.
Jaken raised his head, his contempt for Kagura falling from his face as Rin ran off without him, the imp struggling to his feet. "Wait for me, you impetuous brat!"
"Your face is red."
Kagura turned to find Sesshoumaru standing straight again beside her, gold and crimson meeting in the moonlight. "I'm…" She closed her face in her hands, her skin warm to the touch. "Embarrassed."
He touched her elbow, standing close. "There is no need to be embarrassed."
"Still," she laughed, "I am."
"Come." He lifted his hand, stealing one from her cheek. "Let us return to camp."
Epilogue
"Must you go so soon?"
The only sound between them for a measure was that of gently flowing water, their new camp situated in a wooded area not too far from the river by which Sesshoumaru and Kagura were standing as he bore her the bad news.
"This." He emphasized with a squeeze to the hand he held. "Is all the more reason to step up my pursuit."
"But…" She hesitated, gaze drifting to the river. "We're just beginning."
"There will be plenty of time for that when he is dead."
Kagura turned and faced him once again, willowy arms surrounding him. He in turn closed his arm around her, breathing in the flowery scent of her lily-garlanded hair.
"Would it really make so much of a difference if you were to stay just a little bit longer?"
"The longer I wait, the longer it will take."
She lifted her head from his chest, a lone tear glistening down her face. "Just a little while more, please." She leaned into the thumb brushing her cheek. "This is all still so new to me… and I honestly don't know what I'd do without you."
He wouldn't damage his honor by making a promise he couldn't keep, the way he kissed her vowing instead his swift return… and that not a moment would go by he wasn't thinking of her. She helped him off with his armor, his figure sinking with hers to the ground.
"Only a couple left," she frowned, dangling the two remaining charms between them. "We should probably track down Kagome again."
"We haven't the time." He pulled her against him, an impassioned cry escaping her as his lips found the place between her neck and now bare shoulder that drove her wild. She fell backward with him atop her, his eyes feasting upon her flesh where her colorful layers left her exposed, sunlight playing along the trail of saliva his kiss left upon her pale curves.
Here, they would savor every second they shared. Every smile, every caress, burning into unfading memory every fiery sensation inciting their nerves. Days, weeks, months. It would be forever, no matter how little or how long he would be gone.
"Sesshoumaru." Her breath hitched in her throat as his lips continued their descent down her body.
"Yes?"
"We will be together always… won't we?"
He lifted his face above hers and let it hover close. "I am in your heart, am I not?"
"Yes," she nodded. "Always."
"From there I can never leave your side."
"No." She smiled against his approaching kiss. "I don't suppose you can."
