-Marcus Tullius Cicero December 24, 1990 Dexter, Maine Four days could tell Sesshomaru a lot about a person. Four days told Sesshomaru that Shippo didn’t care so much for the quality of the things that he put in his mouth as long as those things were high in sugar and carbohydrates. Four days told Sesshomaru that Dexter, Maine was quite possibly the smallest town he had seen for years. Four days told Sesshomaru that Americans assumed that he could not speak English simply because he looked foreign. And four days told Sesshomaru that he was suddenly entrusted with much more freedom then he had in Japan. In his four days on American soil Sesshomaru was busy trying to accomplish goals. Although he was still guarded around Shippo, the Kitsune was helpful in setting him up with a driving instructor, and clothes that matched the weather conditions. Papers were in the works to get Sesshomaru full citizenship in the United States. The Syndicate seemed unsure that a simple visa would give him enough time to complete his current mission. His mission… That was the one goal he was avoiding. He knew he would have to face it at some point. The regenerist lived less than a mile up the winding country road. He drove by their white farmhouse at the top of the snowy winding hill with his driving instructor earlier, but he pretended not to notice the little girl and her mom making snowmen in the front yard. Sesshomaru knew that in some ways he did not want to see the regenerist. He almost didn’t want to be brought out of the hallow sadness left behind after his Rin died so many centuries ago. And he definitely did not want to be confronted with it while Shippo was still around. Sighing he turned back to the book he swiped off the kitchen counter earlier. It was one of Shippo’s books, but Sesshomaru had to admit that it was at least entertaining. The title “Weirdos From Another Planet!” had piqued his interest initially, but now he was completely engrossed in the cartoon of a little kid named Calvin, and his tiger named Hobbes. Plus it was good practice to read English that was written informally. “Hey, Sesshomaru, I got some food.” Looking up from the book Sesshomaru already knew what Shippo was standing in his doorway for and was a little annoyed. The scent of some kind of strange American food was coming from the paper bag that Shippo held in his hand. His nose twitched and his stomach growled betraying. “You were supposed to go grocery shopping, not to a fast food establishment.” The Kitsune shrugged. “Didn’t feel like it. Besides you should go to get used to it.” Shippo replied shoving one hand out to offer up the greasy paper bag covered food. “What is that?” Sesshomaru asked hesitantly. He was rude about food, because of his picky appetite. He was rude about food because it was Shippo offering it. Their food likes were on opposite ends of the scale: Sesshomaru enjoyed proteins. He preferred meat, fish, nuts, eggs, almost anything with high protein content. He liked the taste of milk, but it didn’t settle well in his stomach. The only thing that Shippo and Sesshomaru both enjoyed was soda. Sesshomaru loved soda. Soda was generally different in Japan, and harder to get. Sesshomaru discovered that the best thing about America was the abundance of soda. He could get lots of different kinds of soda in the grocery store, in a can or a bottle. He could get fountain sodas at nearly every restaurant… if not every restaurant! “A Whopper. I got you root beer too.” The food smelled a little funny but he accepted it anyways. Shippo left him to his own devices as he opened the paper bag on his lap. With an over exaggerated tone he sniffed the burger a couple of times before finally biting into it. Never before had Sesshomaru ever tasted anything that was greasy and stale all at the same time. Balling up the burger into its paper container Sesshomaru moved himself from the comfortable spot on his bed. Shippo could have this crap, he needed to find something worth eating. His socks felt funny on the carpeted floors to the kitchen. Tossing the unwanted food onto the table Sesshomaru noticed Shippo was petrified, staring out the window. Glancing out the window Sesshomaru saw why. The little red car that belonged to the family in the big white farmhouse was pulling into their driveway. Stunned Sesshomaru stood there for a moment, trying to figure out why they would be here. Shippo moved first. “Go into your room and lock the door.” The Kitsune said rushing about the house to straighten things up. “What’s going on?” Sesshomaru demanded as the family of three got out of the car. Shippo stopped looking a little pale as he turned to Sesshomaru. The scent around Shippo reeked of fear. “They can’t see you. Please just trust me.” The fox demon sounded desperate. He had his hands up in a pleading motion. Turning quickly Sesshomaru retreated to his room closing the door behind him. Tensely he realized that the lock on the door was broken. He could not relax. Shoulders knotted he knew he would hear everything even without standing near the door. He could hear Shippo greeting the family with sincere familiarity and comfort that betrayed nothing of his previous desperation. They were wishing each other happy holidays when Sesshomaru heard it. The sound of her voice, forgotten for centuries it came back to him so fast. “I got you a present!” The beautiful voice of Rin reached his ears and he touched the doorway resting his head against the wood. He hadn’t heard her in so long. This Rin spoke English, not Japanese but other than cadence and enunciation the voice was the same. It was the same beautiful voice that reminded him of flowers and ten years of peace. “Thank you, Rin.” Shippo spoke without sounding like he was hiding something. Sesshomaru was getting the idea that Shippo was more familiar with Rin’s family than he cared for anyone to find out. Maybe Shippo feared that Sesshomaru would tell others in the Syndicate that he had contact with the family. The minutes passed by with small conversations between Shippo and Rin’s parents. The polite offer of tea or coffee, and of course milk and sugar cookies for Rin. Sesshomaru stood still with his hands and forehead resting against the wood door. And then it came, when the adults were all talking about mundane things. Shippo was informing them that he was moving soon, relocation for his company nothing could be done about it. And then a surprise, “Is there any way you can baby-sit Rin for a couple of days?” The mother asked tentatively, “I know it’s a bad time, but we don’t really know anyone else here. Ken’s mother is in the hospital.” Ken must be the name of the father, Sesshomaru mused trying to remember back to the girl’s birth certificate. It did strike him as familiar. “Of course.” Shippo agreed. Irritation welled up in Sesshomaru. How was he supposed to remain virtually invisible when Shippo was inviting the regenerist into his home? The parents went off with loving goodbyes to their unsuspecting daughter. Oh this is great… Sesshomaru couldn’t help but think sarcastically. He didn’t know what else to think after all. Stuck in his room Sesshomaru heard the sound of little feet walking towards him. Knowing that he should move back he found himself frozen. The scent that was reaching him from behind the door was the scent lost over time. He was so wrapped up in it. It was as if the years had not gone by lonely. “Rin come back over here. I have Christmas cookies.” Shippo was luring the girl away, and Sesshomaru wondered what he would do if Rin wandered into his room. Would Shippo hold that against him as a breach of contract? The thought irritated Sesshomaru and he turned from the door. He slipped out of the window and onto the roof just in time to hear the door to his room open. “You left your window open, Shippo.” He heard Rin say softly. Shippo smelled nervous, even from outside in the swirling snow Sesshomaru could pick up on that. The fox demon steered the little girl away from Sesshomaru’s room with promises of cookies, and shut the door so that Sesshomaru could hear it. Quickly, because he was cold, and because he didn’t want to be caught Sesshomaru re-entered his room and dressed for warmth. Hastily he picked up a pen and a piece of paper. For a moment he didn’t know what to write, but then he scrawled the words “You are an idiot” across the top of the page. Scribbling them out he re-wrote his statement in Japanese in case Rin found it. Taking few personal items he left through the window and made his way up the street to the only other place he really knew in the little town: The white farmhouse up the hill.Thank you for the reviews!
