The good news for you guys is.. I like this fic and I have ideas. THe bad news is they're not coming in order so I've got half a page of ideas for further chapters that don't fit yet. :D As for Sesshomaru not learning her name, I'll admit this is my personality leaking into him. At a volunteer event a few weeks ago I worked with this woman and she was a great one to have a conversation with, I never found out her name till we were leaving on the last day though! Lol *.*.*.*.*.*.*.* Kagome sat across from Souta in his small apartment clutching a cup of tea for dear life. It was well past midnight, there were cops and crime scene investigators at both the shrine and Mr. Higurashi's flat. The two sibling's tears had long dried up. There was nothing left to cry out. "Did the officers at the shrine have a motive Souta? Kagome asked her brother though it appeared he didn't hear her. He stared off in the distance inhaling the steam from his tea. "Souta..." She tried again to get his attention "Go take a shower and go to bed, I'll stay up and wait for any news." Souta nodded and walked towards the bathroom in a trance like state. Upon hearing the shower turn on Kagome moved over to the small TV in his apartment and clicked it on before returning to her spot at the table. She flipped it over to the news, so far nothing about her parents murder and she couldn't have been happier about that. Kagome turned her head when she heard the door to the bathroom open and watched Souta walk to his room. She nearly broke down again seeing her little brother so dejected. Her parents were supposed to be around so much longer! They were supposed to be around to see her children, and Souta's children! She knew she couldn't be mad at her parents, it wasn't their fault instead she channeled her rage at the people who killed her parents. If only she would have been stronger, one of them would already be in custody. She leaned her head on her arms and closed her eyes. "Just for a little bit..." She mumbled before dozing off. Something was buzzing next to her and it was getting annoying, She moaned and sat up from the table, wondering what time it was. Spotting the phone on the table she decided to answer it, "Higurashi, Souta residence. This is Kagome" She spoke into the receiver and shocked even herself at how hollow her voice sounded. "Kagome?" The person on the other end questioned, "It's Sango, no one can get through to your phone what happened? Have you seen the news?" Kagome glanced up at the muted TV and gasped at what she saw. There was a picture of each of her parents with the headline "Higurashi shrine owners brutally murdered last night" Kagome unmuted the TV to see what the reporter was saying. "... this brutal murder is supposedly an attack from an anti-yokai activist group going around committing various crimes throughout the country. Ever since yokai have revealed themselves violent crimes have increased by thirty percent." The screen switched to another reporter, "What a tragic thing to happen to the Higurashi's. We're told their son Souta Higurashi arrived at the shrine after the police had arrived and that their daughter Kagome Higurashi, a well known pediatrician in the Tokyo area found their father with the murderer lurking over his body. How lucky she is to be alive...and now we'll head over to weather..." Kagome muted the TV and stared at the pictures of her parents, herself and Souta. She couldn't understand why they needed to put pictures of her and her brother up, would that not just paint targets on their backs?! "Kagome!" Sango yelled through the phone "Sorry Sango I just... I just saw the news..." Kagome mumbled "I'm sorry Kaggie... if there's anything I can do just let me know." Sango stated in an attempt to make her voice sound understanding and reassuring. She was close to Kagome's parents. So was her brother, they had been in each other's lives since Sango's parents had died twelve years ago. "I think I just need to be alone with Souta today, thank you Sango." and with that Kagome hung up. She looked back at the tv, the weather was currently flashing across the screen, Sunny days for the next week. Despite her sorrow she was still pleased the sun would be out. It would make things less dreary. She clicked off the TV when she heard a knock on the door. Heaving herself up she padded over to the front door, peering cautiously through the peephole to see who was there. "Tokyo PD ma'am! Just want a word if thats OK." The man held up his badge to the peephole completely understanding her cautiousness. Kagome slowly opened the door, as if using it for a shield and peering around it. She let out a shocked gasp when she saw who the officer was. "Inu..." Kagome choked out a sob and threw the door open to embrace her friend. "I had no idea you were an officer! and look at you! You cut and dyed your beautiful hair." Seeing her friend again just added more fuel to the fire as she cried on the officer's shoulder. "Kag's, I'm sorry about your parents. I know how you feel but at least you have..." She shoved her hand over Inuyasha's mouth. "Don't say it! DON'T. You'll just make everything fall apart more." She invited the officer in and offered him tea. "So why are you here? I wouldn't think they'd let you come on duty just because your friend's parents died." Inuyasha sat down and sighed. "No, I have to get your statement about last night. I know it's hard but that's why I begged them to let me come instead of someone who didn't know." Take as long as you want Kag's and remember I'm here for you." Kagome turned around with two cups of tea in hand and sat at the table with a sigh. "Where do you want me to start?" she didn't even try to smile, it would just look hollow and fake. "Just tell me your whole day, from when you woke up to when you got back. Anyone you might have run into during the day that looked suspicious anything off. We don't even know where to start with this." Inuyasha sipped his tea and set a voice recorder on the table, nodding at Kagome to begin. She took a deep breath and started with breakfast, as soon as she started telling Inuyasha about the waffles her father made her that morning she started her crying all over again. Inuyasha scooted his chair closer and pulled her into his chest. *.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.* Sesshomaru was perched at the breakfast bar at this hole in the wall diner he often visited. He sipped his coffee and picked up the paper his waitress had left for him. He pinched the bridge of his nose as he read the headline about the Higurashi family deaths. 'Why would anti-yokai activists target a shrine family. This makes no sense.' he thought to himself with a grumble in his head. He read on and peered at the pictures of the family, upon seeing Kagome's face his coffee fell from his hand, shattering when it hit the floor. His waitress turned from what she was doing behind the counter "Pretty brutal huh?" She commented turning back to her duties. "I feel bad for their kids. Even if they are already adults it still must suck to lose your parents so young." Sesshomaru nodded dumbly. 'We promised she not hurt no more!' His beast roared in his head. 'YOU promised she be OK!' his beast was howling at him. He furrowed his eyebrows not sure how to respond, he did promise himself she wouldn't hurt anymore. and already he broke that promise. If he had worked harder to keep her at the bar he might have been able to shelter her from this pain. Or at least help her through it. He threw some bills on the counter for his meal. and pulled out his phone. He hated to ask his brother for anything especially since they hadn't spoken in years but surely he would understand in this case. He dialed Inuyasha's number as he walked out of the small diner. It rang a couple times before it went straight to voicemail. Sesshomaru growled at his phone, how dare Inuyasha ignore his call! He heard the outgoing voicemail message, 'Detective Taisho, Inuyasha Leave me a detailed message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.' Sesshomaru sighed, he hated leaving messages. He was too important to wait for calls. He ended the call before it flipped over to leave a message, he would just have to track down Inuyasha personally. He still didn't really know why his beast was so interested in this girl but he'd go along with it until it no longer suited him to do so. She did lighten his heart after all. *.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.* Souta had woken up to find Inuyasha holding a sobbing Kagome in his kitchen. He attempted a half hearted smile at the hanyo and offered thanks for comforting his sister. "So what happens now 'Yash?" Souta asked getting some tea for himself. Inuyasha shrugged, "We look for evidence, DNA, fingerprints, ya know. Also try to find motive I can't think of any reason your parents would have been targeted. I just hope it wasn't because of me being around." He stroked Kagome's hair soothingly, "She's asleep. I think she slept bent over on the table last night, it cool if I put her in your bed?" Souta shrugged, "yea no problem, she let me sleep so no reason she can't." Inuyasha walked down the hall holding Kagome close to him, a part of him always wondered what could have been between them but it was better that they were friends. She was too good for him. He laid Kagome on Souta's bed and headed back to the kitchen, but not before her heard her mumble a thank you. He smiled as he left the room. "She's going to need all the support she can get. I don't know how she makes it through everything. She's so strong for all of us." Inuyasha plopped back down at the table. Souta sat across from him and nodded, "I'm not sure where she gets all this strength from." He zoned out on the fridge. Inuyasha's phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, the name on the screen simply read 'Bastard', he promptly hit ignore and put the phone back in his pocket. He couldn't talk to his brother right now. Kagome and Souta were more important. "So what happens to the Shrine and your dads place?" Souta shrugged, not really wanting to talk about anything, not even to his role model. Ever since Kagome met Inuyasha in high school Souta thought he was just the coolest person alive. Always wanting to be just like Inuyasha. For that reason he entered college pursuing a degree in criminal psychology. The young boy let out a sigh of relief when the doorbell rang. He stood up to answer the door, opening it slowly. He wasn't so worried about someone attacking him with the hanyo around. He looked up at the man in the doorway, he towered above Souta, "Can I help you sir?" There was something about this person who incited fear into Souta's heart. He seemed so cold but at the same time he reminded Souta of Inuyasha. Sesshomaru sniffed the air before answering the human in front of him. He smelled familiar, like Kagome and then it clicked. "You are Higurashi, Souta?" the tall man inquired. "Whaddya want ya bastard! I ignored your call that usually means leave someone alone!" Inuyasha hollered stomping over to the door. "It certainly doesn't mean hunt them down and interrupt their life!" "Shut up halfling! I don't call you for pleasure ever. You should have known to answer or I would have found you. As it turns out by not answering you answered what I had called for. I seek Higurashi, Kagome. My beast has taken interest in her and I wish to ease her pain." Sesshomaru stated as if it were obvious to the world. "How do you know my sister and what do you mean your 'beast'?" Souta squeaked. For some reason this man just felt so cold, to the point where he really didn't want him around his sister. Inuyasha quickly shoved the door closed on Sesshomaru before he could answer Souta's question as he sensed Kagome coming. There was no way he would allow his brother to even be near Kagome, he'd die first! Inuyasha leaned against the door holding it closed. Souta looked at Inuyasha oddly but realization dawned on his face when he heard his sisters footsteps shuffling down the hall. "Who's at the door and why were you yelling Inu?" Kagome was rubbing her eyes tiredly, she wasn't asleep the whole time but on the edge. "And why are you leaning against the door like it's going to open on its own? Is someone out there who shouldn't be?" She looked worriedly between the two, hoping for answers. Souta rubbed the back of his head nervously and Inuyasha's ears flattened against his head. He felt bad for waking her up and for keeping things from her. Sesshomaru loosed a feral growl from the other side of the door making Inuyasha look even more guilty. "Kagome! I know you're there!" Kagome gasped, she knew that voice, "Inu, step away from the door please..." She begged softly. Reluctantly he complied and stepped away from the door but not too far away. He would still be there to protect Kagome from whatever it was Sesshomaru wanted. She stepped forward and pulled the door open. As she opened the door the man on the other side didn't even try to fight the smile that edged its way onto his face "You..." she whispered softly, it was her silver haired companion her heart warmed a small amount, "How'd you find me?"While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
