Kagome had to remind herself constantly why she agreed to help this village. The answer was easy, it’s what she did and it was for the children. There were several children sick with fevers and rashes. In her time it would have been cured by an antibiotic or a vaccination, but once again she had to make due. She had lost three of them to the fever her first night in the tiny village and she still had to deal with the outraged parents even after her final patient was well enough to move around the little hut he lived in. She felt for the parents, she did, but their blind ignorance of the limitations to a Miko’s powers was frustrating. They blamed her for their children’s’ deaths that had occurred within the first hour of her arrival. She had not lost another, which angered them more. They thought she decided to use her powers on the, now well, children and had allowed theirs to die, which of course was ridiculous. Now she was being grilled by one particularly filthy mouthed mother who had lost her only son as she was gathering supplies to depart their village.
“How is it you can walk around with your head up, wench, when my boy is cold in the ground?” Kagome ignored the woman as she gathered the dried meats into a cloth to stuff in her poor excuse of a backpack. “You walk around here so self-righteous, bitch, like you are better than everyone else, just because you made the other kids in the village better when some of the little shits didn’t deserve it.” Kagome shouldered her bag, slipped her bow over her arm and tried to walk around the woman to be on her way. “You think we are going to let you leave, you fucking murderer?” Kagome watched as the other parents of the deceased children began to encircle her. She was silently grateful that Sesshomaru had trained her in hand to hand combat. They deserved to have their asses kicked, but didn’t deserve to die. She didn’t like being called a murderer, but she also knew they were out of their minds with grief. That didn’t change the fact that this woman was nasty to begin with. She waited until the first rock was thrown at her before she landed a solid punch across the bridge of the vile woman’s nose. She felt it crunch under her fist and saw the blood gush as the woman fell to the ground holding her face. There was a yell behind her as a man rushed forth and swung at her with his own fist. She dodged the blow easily and brought her leg down deftly across his back causing him to stumble forward, sending him face first into the dirt. Another rock was thrown, she dodged, then another, she ducked, then another that cracked across her right cheek. It was time to retreat. She wasn’t about to be stoned to death by a bunch of slack jawed idiots, grieving or not. She ran swiftly around the woman holding her broken nose and took off toward the woods at the edge of the village. She didn’t look back, just barreled full steam ahead, weaving through the trees and jumping fallen logs and bushes. She came to a stop with her chest heaving and her heart pounding in her chest. She spun her head in all directions to see if she was being chased and tried her best to listen to her surrounding over the hammering in her ears. When she was satisfied she was safe, she lightly pressed the pads of her fingers to the side of her injured cheek and winced. Yep, it was bruised, but luckily she still had her teeth. She let out a weak growl as she thought about those people trying to kill her. They were all cracked in the head and she was glad she was out of there. She trudged through the forest and tried to catch her bearings. She had lost the sun in the cover of the trees and the only thing she could think to do was to find either a clearing or the edge of the woods to make camp for the night. She would wait to see which direction the sun rose before she went too far out of her way. She didn’t find the edge of the forest, but did luck up and find a small clearing. It had a small stream running through it and was filled with wildflowers that had found an oasis in the midst of the gloomy forest. She set about her tasks of building a fire and refilling her thermos with water. After her small dinner she settled down in her sleeping bag and gazed up at the stars. Her mind wandered to her family that was 500 years in the future. She missed them so much. In the beginning, when she was pulled into the well and had broken the jewel, it was hard on her to adapt to life in the feudal era. Then, as time went on and their group grew, it had become as easy as breathing. That’s when it had become hard at home. Not so much with her family, more like school and her high school friends. She thought about her old friends every now and then, but she had already become estranged from them long before the well closed. Her mom, grandpa, and little brother had known that it would be a possibility that she may never be able to return home after the completion of the Shikon no Tama. Every time she came back through the well to see them, it was like they all exhaled at once. After the wish was made and the jewel disappeared, it had taken them two weeks to get back to the well. She had jumped in, but instead of the usual blue glow there was nothing. She would climb back up the well and jump in again. She tried digging and flaring her powers, but nothing worked. She cried for days, mourning the loss of her family in the future. She learned to adjust as the years went by. The pain was still there, but it had become bearable. It helped that she had a great set of friends who she loved and adored and who loved her in return, but they all had slowly drifted apart. She remembered the day Sango, Miroku, and Kohaku left the village of Edo and moved back to the old slayer village. They promised to visit, and so did Kagome, as often as they could and they did in the beginning. The every other week visits turned into every other month, then every few months, to once a year. She missed them, but they had their lives to lead, as did she. Then Shippo had left. Kagome knew her adopted son needed the training. She was human and could only live so long, but her heart ached for him. She had InuYasha, though he wasn’t always the most pleasant company at times, she still loved him. He and Aiko had become close and were building a hut of their own, not too far from hers. He had announced their betrothal with a big goofy grin. She was so happy for her friends. They had found happiness and that was all she could hope for. She often wondered what had happened to Kouga, Hakkaku, and Ginta. She hadn’t heard anything from them in so long. That fateful day that InuYasha had saved Kouga’s life and he had said goodbye to her had plagued her more times than she could count. She was used to his bold declarations of love, but how can you love someone you just met? She had said as much to him, but he just shrugged and took off with Hakkaku and Ginta behind him. Nothing ever deterred him. He would run up and grasp her hands in his and ask how ‘his woman’ was doing and she would blush and fidget. At the time she was so sure that she had been in love with InuYasha that she never gave the wolf Prince a second glance. You know what they say, hind sight is 20/20. He was very handsome with his long, ebony hair, his gorgeous blue eyes, and then there was that voice, a deep, rough baritone that would drop an octave when he would say her name. Just the thought of it sent chills up her spine. He had always been attentive and sweet. The day he had said good bye hit her harder than she thought it would. She had shed many tears for the loss of his presence in her life and she never understood why that was. After she had realized her love for InuYasha was that for a friend, she often would ponder her feelings for Kouga. She knew that she wasn’t in love with him. She didn’t really know him at all, but what she did know about him, she liked, even if he was too cocky for his own good. That was nothing new. She was still dealing with the same issue from InuYasha. She considered Kouga a dear friend, though, one she missed, like all her friends and family. She found solace in her work as a healer and her Miko powers had become stronger under Kaede’s teachings. She released the frustrations of her life on Sesshomaru every two weeks during their sparing. He was an excellent teacher, if you had the stomach for his methods. She had never fully feared him, even though she knew she should. Despite all of the times he had tried to kill her, he had offered her training to preserve her life and she had used that knowledge well. She travelled often to other villages giving assistance in their times of need. Most of the time it was some sort of youki attack than sickness, but she always did her best and had come out mostly unscathed. She believed Sesshomaru to be a friend as well. He had let his guard down around her gradually. She was able to tell him things she couldn’t tell anyone else and she was positive he did the same. Kagome giggled to herself and then frowned. When had her life become so lonely? Morning had come faster than she had hoped, but she got up, packed up her little camp and set out east towards the rising sun. She figured she would hit a road eventually and find another village that could point her home. She took a deep breath of the afternoon air when she finally broke out of the foliage and into a lush field. She could see a road from the hill she was on and set her feet on the path to reach it. The sun was warm on her face, but the air was still slightly chilly. The leaves had begun to turn colors and winter was not far away. Kagome knew that she should enjoy the sun as much as possible because when winter hit, she wouldn’t come out of her hut unless it was necessary. She had never missed the modern day conveniences of the future more than during the blistering cold winters in feudal Japan. “Sssssso ssssssweet, wouldn’t you sssssay brother?” A hissing voice came from behind her. Kagome mentally slapped herself at not being alert to surroundings. She should have caught their auras before they approached and should have been ready. Sesshomaru would have been borderline pissed at the current situation his pupil had gotten herself into. She sensed about four youkai in the field behind her and they were too close to shoot with her arrow. Her brain began to do overtime trying to think of her best possible options to escape with her life. “Yesssss brother, sssssweet indeed.” Another chimed in. They had moved slowly closer and Kagome bolted toward the road trying to put some distance between her and the youki. She had her bow grasped firmly in her hand as she ran, when she thought she had enough distance she turned quickly nocked an arrow and fired the reiki infused projectile at one of the burly snake demons. She effectively purified him, but before she could get her second shot off, she was tackled from her right. She ignored the pain from the forceful collision and tried to scramble away from the scaly, yellow demon, but he pinned her down, with his knees and sneered at her while holding both wrists in one clawed hand. “You just ssssslayed my brother, priestesssss. vengencccce will be mine!” He hissed viciously. Kagome continued her struggles, but was stilled when his free hand smacked her across her already bruised cheek. She had flashes of light dance across her vision and her brain went fuzzy. She tried to concentrate on staying awake. She felt him tying her hands behind her back, but her sluggish mind wasn’t able to react fast enough to fight against him. She heard him laughing right before something hard slammed into her stomach, knocking the wind out of her, her cries of pain stuck in her throat. She felt herself being lifted right before she blacked out completely. Something cold was being splashed in her face causing her foggy mind to reach the surface. Gods it was cold and she didn’t want to wake up. She wanted to go back to the warm land of dreams. She tried to move her hand to wipe the liquid from her face, but realize it was restrained above her head. Her eyes snapped open and she looked around. It was night now. How long had she been out? She had been tied to a tree with her arms above her head and her legs spread and restrained. “Good of you to join ussss, priestessss. Wouldn’t want you to missss all the fun.” The snake youkai hissed with amusement. She barely had time to process what had happened when a sharp searing pain from her left thigh over took her senses. She cried out and the youkai chuckled. She looked down to inspect the damage and realized she was naked. She blushed in humiliation and cried out again when his clawed hands came forward and slashed along her other thigh. She saw him kneel before her exposed body and tried to clamp her legs together, but the ropes held true to their purpose. She clamped her eyes shut and tried to recede into the deepest parts of her brain, when his disgusting, forked tongue ran up the gashes on her left thigh. “Sssso ssssweet.” Then another blow hit her left ribs causing the air to once again be knocked out of her. Then a sharp pain ran across her right ribs and down her stomach. She couldn’t catch her breath. The pain was too great. Silent tears streamed down her face as the youkai attacked her again and again until she floated back into the darkness.
Saburo had been sent out again, after the festivities started, to hunt. The others in the pack were apparently enjoying the raw meat over the cooked this year. Kouga had returned, as he had promised, with the barrels of sake and when night approached, the bonfire was set ablaze and everyone filled their cups. The old stories of their ancestors were being told when Kouga came up to him and asked him to go hunt. Sure he loved the stories, but he needed to clear his head, so he agreed quickly. Kouga had returned in a surprisingly good mood, one that Saburo hadn’t seen on his friend in, hell, ever. Of course he had asked Kouga about it and he just said that he was just looking forward to a peaceful festival this year. Yeah and he was a kitten. Not even Ayame brought his Alpha’s mood down. He wondered what had happened to lift his spirits. Not that it was a bad thing. He had been so devastated over losing that priestess, Kagome. Saburo thought back to everything Kouga had told him about her and he had to admit, even if she was human, she sounded like one hell of a woman. A bone chilling scream cut through his thoughts at that moment. He scented the air. There was blood and lots of it along with the foul stink of snake youkai. Those damn bastards had been a thorn in the preverbal ass of the pack here lately. They would find nests on their lands and destroy them only to find more the next day. Saburo took off in the direction of the scream. He hoped he would get there in time to save their latest victim. He ran up onto the sight of an unconscious, naked human girl being punched and slashed by a snake youkai. The poor thing was bound to a tree and covered in blood. Saburo’s stomach clenched. He barreled toward the youkai with his claws and ripped out the bastard’s heart through his back. He had dispatched the other two youkai in the clearing before the first had time to fall. He kicked the reptile out of the way and gave the girl a once over. She was still alive, but barely. He couldn’t just leave her here like this. She needed help, so he cut her bonds and cradled the tiny slip of a woman in his arms before he took off back to the den, running as fast as his demon body would allow.
Kouga threw back his third cup of sake and refilled it. Ayame came bounding up to him with a smile on her face. “Kouga, do you want to dance?” She asked grabbing his arm as he took another swig. “No, not right now, Ayame.” She tugged his arm again and pouted. “Oh, come on. It’s fun. Don’t you want to enjoy the festivities like everyone else?” “I am.” He said with a smirk and a raised his cup to her before taking another long drink. “So what you’re just going to sit around and get drunk?” She asked in disbelief. Kouga hardly ever indulged, but he was celebrating. He had mulled the old Miko’s words over and over in his head and had found something that hadn’t been there in a long time. Hope. Kagome wasn’t mated to InuYasha like he thought, not even close. The mutt had always been dense, but Kouga was not going to argue this time. He had made up his mind to go back to Edo right after the festival to see ‘his woman’. He wouldn’t call her that because he didn’t want to scare her off, but he was determined to be in her life. He was rather upset at how her life had turned out. From what he could gather from Rin’s ramblings and what Kaede had said, she was very busy and rarely took anytime for herself. Knowing Kagome, she poured everything she had into caring for the sick or battling against attacking youkai in nearby villages. He had been shocked to find out that Lord Sesshomaru was training her. It wasn’t that Kagome wanted to hone her skills as a warrior, she was always strong, it was the fact that Sesshomaru was her teacher. Not what he had expected. If he would have chanced a guess, then he would have thought the mutt would have taught her that stuff, but after hearing the way he talked about her in the village, Kouga knew Kagome would have sat the impatient hanyou until his back snapped in half. He chuckled at the thought. “What’s so damn funny? Did you even hear me?” Ayame asked. Apparently she had said something, but he didn’t know what it was and he didn’t care. Nothing was going to bother him tonight. This was his night to enjoy the memories of his Kagome for the first time in six years. His night to celebrate their impending reunion. “Nothing you need to worry about. Why don’t you go get something to eat or dance or something? I’m gonna go over here.” He said waving her off. She just stood there gaping at him like he had grown another head when he topped of his cup and walked away. He grabbed a couple pieces of smoked meat and found a nice spot up against a boulder on a hill not too far from the bonfire, but not close enough to be in the thick of things. He chewed the meat and watched as several wolf demons danced around the bon fire to the beat of the drums. Kouga chuckled to himself as Ginta, trying to impress a female, tripped over his own two feet and landed face first into the dirt. The pups were playing under the supervision of a few females in a field near their dens and far enough away from the festival that they wouldn’t be disturbed. The older wolves were reciting the tales of their ancestors to any who would listen. Then there were the mated couples or the couples who were courting, just enjoying their partner’s company. Everyone was enjoying themselves and it uplifted his already jubilant mood. He finished off the meat and made a mental note to get the same females to do the cooking next year and stood to join Hakkaku and the now dejected and embarrassed Ginta. “Nice moves, Ginta.” Kouga said facetiously. “Regardless of what it looked like, I meant to do that. It’s all part of the plan.” Ginta said defensively. “Plan? What you planned on eating dirt in front of the female you’ve been chasing for the past few months? Way to impress the ladies, brother.” Hakkaku chuckled as he took a drink from his cup. “Okay, so maybe it wasn’t on purpose, but it’s working to my advantage.” Ginta grinned and threw his hand over his shoulder. Kouga and Hakkaku looked in the direction of his thumb and saw the female coming towards them with two cups of sake in her hands. “So it seems.” Kouga grinned back at his friend. The wolf female sat down beside Ginta and handed him the cup. “How are you faring this evening, Prince Kouga?” the female asked politely. “I am doing well, Natsuki, and yourself?” Kouga replied in kind. “Same. This year’s festival has been pretty exciting so far.” She said with a small smile. “You could say that again.” Hakkaku piped up with a hearty laugh. Apparently Natsuki caught his meaning and glanced at Ginta before looking away with a blush. Ginta elbowed his brother in the ribs causing his sake to spill. “I’m sorry, Natsuki. I guess this stuff has gone straight to my brain.” Hakkaku said with a smile brushing the liquid out of his furs. “Brain? I wasn’t aware you had one, brother?” Ginta said with a smirk. “And I wasn’t aware you had two left feet.” Hakkaku’s jab caused uproar of laughter throughout the little group. Everyone except Ginta, who was blushing furiously. “It’s okay, Ginta. Dancing’s just not your thing. No biggie.” Natsuki said reassuringly, patting his arm. Ginta’s face lit up with her gesture and Hakkaku and Kouga laughed again. Their merriment was cut short, when the scent of Saburo and blood hit Kouga’s sensitive nose. He rose abruptly, dropping his cup on the ground and ran to meet his friend. He was carrying a bloody, naked, human woman. When Kouga got closer he realized just who it was and his heart dropped into his gut. “Kouga! I found her being attacked by Snake youki. I couldn’t just leave her there like this.” Saburo said hurriedly. “Kagome?! Kagome, can you hear me? Give her to me. Get the healers and have them sent to my den, now!” Saburo gently shifted Kagome into Kouga’s arms and raced off to find the healers as Kouga raced back to his den, trying not to jostle the precious bundle in his arms.
