His command failed to register sometime later when the massive fortress appeared in the distance. “What have I gotten myself into?” Kagome muttered. Her stoic host had no answer. They touched down well within the walls, Sesshoumaru’s feet coming to light on the white tile of the terrace walkway. His arm moved behind him to steady her as she thumped in behind him. “This is the family wing” he told her, “You will remain here unless I specify otherwise.” Kagome blinked up at him. “Enoa” he called and a tall, lithe demoness stepped from the shadowed alcove with a low bow. She was pale like milk, with snowy hair that fell in careful arrangement past her shoulders. Her eyes were a limpid green and fixed on Kagome with no small measure of curiosity. “Lady Kagome must be prepared for court” he said smoothly, “I will present her in two weeks. Do not fail me Enoa. Have Ayame fit her.” Then he was gone, moving off in a graceful rustle of silk, without a backward glance. Kagome turned her gaze to Enoa and smiled, “Hi. I’m Kagome. Ehmmm” Enoa had bowed once more, before motioning for Kagome to follow her. “You must learn to walk silently, with fluid motions.” She said in lieu of greeting and turned to demonstrate the smoothly elegant gate Kagome was expected to mimic. Kagome did try but the look in the demoness’s eyes told her she had much work to do. “You must speak familiarly to anyone unless within the confines of chamber or that of mistress Rin” Enoa instructed, “You must not give way to the human need to have or make friends in this place. It will be seen as weakness.” “Don’t you have friends?” Kagome asked. Enoa lifted one shoulder in a delicate shrug, “I am not human and do not endure such harsh scrutiny.” Kagome rolled her eyes to the ceiling far above her, ‘So much for being nice’. Enoa led her down the massive corridors to a set of doors; just beyond at the end of the hall was an enormous set of silver doors. Enoa followed her gaze, “The master’s chambers. None are permitted without express permission. These will be your chambers.” She gestured to the doors before her and pushed them open. Kagome stepped inside and spun in a wide circle taking in the beauty of the room. “No futon” she whispered to herself, eyeing the large bed against the far wall. It was a veritable sea of iris colored silks. “The master prefers western beds” Enoa allowed. There was a desk near the window, a large vanity and several wardrobes. Light glowed from crystal oil lanterns strewn about the room. “The onsen of the family wing is across the hall, pale blue doors. I shall show you the rest of the grounds over the next few days.” Kagome nodded, still lost in the wonder of her room. It was nearly five times the size of her room at home. One high shelf was filled to capacity with scrolls and books. Kagome smiled to see them. “I doubt you will need those, should you require the space I shall have them removed.” Enoa told her. “I like to read. It’s fine” Kagome told her. The demoness leveled an appraising look at her, “Most humans cannot read my lady. I shall not judge your lack of this ability.” Kagome felt her hackles rise, “This human can and the books are staying.” She snapped. Enoa raised a brow at her outburst. “Outbursts of temper and emotion must not be shown to anyone beyond these doors. You will be aloof, tranquil and serene. How well you compose and conduct yourself is a direct reflection on the master. Do you require anything further from me this night?” “No. Thank you.” Kagome said in clipped cool tones. Enoa inclined her head, “Then I shall fetch you for your lessons with the dawn. The books shall stay.” Then she turned and left the room. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kagome’s first week in the Western Palace was anything but easy. Her lessons had begun the following morning when Enoa had woken her at dawn, as promised. A maid came and set a breakfast tray at the small table in the corner of her room. Enoa calmly corrected her dining habits. She was schooled in court customs, dance, music until Enoa announced she had zero talent for it. She went on to learn the etiquette of dining at demon tables and how to conduct herself in demon company. That lesson had been fairly easy, she wasn’t to speak to anyone or make eye contact unless Sesshoumaru allowed it. Suddenly five months seemed terribly long. She should walk slightly behind Sesshoumaru, eyes downcast, head high. She was to portray herself as the docile but greatly honored ward. Enoa had whisked Kagome away down long halls and around towering pillars until the mortal girl felt her head spin as she explained the layout of the palace and showed kagome areas that were forbidden to her. Mainly where the soldiers in garrison were to be found. Tea lessons and dining were a trial for Kagome as she was expected to sit with utmost stillness. She would have no outbursts of emotion. She would be cool, tranquil…. Much like the little pond just beyond her rooms. Demon gatherings, Enoa warned, often lasted many hours. No fidgeting for Kagome. As Enoa had rattled off the long lists of don’ts and must nots, Kagome groaned and dropped her head, earning her a soft rap on her hand from the demoness. “I’ve no idea why you’ve come to the palace” Enoa had told her, “But you must not fail at these lessons, I must not fail to teach you.” Kagome has glumly eaten her lunch trying to make certain she adhered strictly to Enoa’s guidance. She’d stood for hours, that day, being poked and prodded, fitted for Kimonos. Costly silks held up to her, only the most complimentary colors were chosen for her by the butterfly demoness that was the court seamstress. When she chose a shimmering swath of pure white with familiar red flowers on it, Kagome had protested. “When you are presented formally to the court, there will be talk” the butterfly Ayame said softly, “It will be much easier on you if there is no question who you belong to.” “Belong to!?” Kagome sputtered, “I don’t belong to anyone!” Enoa reached out with her fan and snapper it smartly against her hand, “Outbursts.” Kagome sighed. Ayame gave her a sympathetic look, “Enoa” she chided gently, “Do not be so harsh to her. This is difficult for her. She needs time” Enoa grunted in such an inelegant way and that Kagome did a double take, ‘Time isn’t a luxury we have. He intends to present her in two weeks’ time.” Kagome felt kinship with the lovely butterfly with her golden eyes and fuchsia hair. She laughed frequently, the sound like tinkling silver bells. And she treated Kagome nicely. She thought she might whoop with relief when Enoa told her she would eat her evening meals with young Rin. Her lessons for the day were at an end. Rin was delighted to see Kagome; of course her Lord Sesshoumaru had told her Kagome would be visiting for a time. She had welcomed Kagome into her rooms with a broad smile. Rin’s rooms were well suited to her; cheerful yellow silks adorned her bed and windows. Lamps were lit, the large hearth burned with a cheery fire. This was a warm space, alive and soothing. Kagome played with the child, told her stories, taught her songs. In Rin’s chambers there was no need for decorum and formality and Kagome gulped it in like fresh air. When she told Rin that she would be staying for five months, the little girl had laughed out loud and danced around the room. They were in a game of patty cake when the doors opened to permit the tall and powerful lord of the west into the rooms. Rin broke away at once, hurrying over to stand toe to toe with the great demon. Her little head was tilted all the way back to meet his gaze. “Lord Sesshoumaru!” she sang out. Kagome watched closely, would he reprimand her for being so familiar with him? She blinked, stunned when Sesshoumaru merely dropped a large clawed palm to the top of the child’s head. Giving her a pat and motioning her back inside the room. Maids followed behind him with the evening meal. Setting out savory smelling dishes with silent, practiced ease. After they had bowed and left, Sesshoumaru sat himself at the head of the small table near the window. Rin took her seat to the left and kagome lifted one blue black brow as Sesshoumaru gestured to the seat across from him. “Miko.” Kagome sank into position as gracefully as she could. Her day of lessons was looping madly through her mind. Sesshoumaru watched her actions, he said nothing but he gave a slight incline of his head. She supposed it was his gracious acknowledgement of her many trials over the last twelve hours. her nerves were frazzled, she was tired, her head pounded with the helpful tidbits getting stuffed in it all day. She was going to tell him just what she thought of this mess. Once she was seated he turned his attention to Rin. “Kagome?” Rin asked, “May I have some dinner?” Kagome blinked, “Oh! Of course Rin.” She carefully dished up food for the waiting child. There was steaming rice, roasted fish and succulent beef with mushrooms. She was supposed to help with Rin after all; she’d just supposed that the maids would serve her. “Rin” Sesshoumaru asked then, “Tell me about your day.” Kagome motioned for the plate set before him so that she could serve him as well, but he gave a small shake of his head. Kagome slowly served herself as she listened to the girl talk to the demon as though he were her boon companion. But then again, she mused he might very well be. She hid her smile behind her chopsticks as Rin recounted an encounter with Jaken earlier than day. “So after I fell in trying to feed the pretty fish Jaken said he ain’t going to take me there no more.” She sounded downright surly about it. “Isn’t and anymore” Sesshoumaru said softly, “He isn’t going to take you there anymore.” “Isn’t, anymore” Rin repeated, “Yes my Lord!” He nodded to show he was pleased with her, “Eat now Rin.” She began to eat carefully and when she held her chopsticks too close to the bottoms and her hands were in danger of getting dirty, the demon merely leaned over and adjusted her grip. Then he pinned Kagome with his bright gaze, as though daring her to comment. “Kagome.” He said watching her lower her chopsticks, “Your lessons are going well I presume.” “Actually” she said sweetly, far too sweetly, “I’m glad you asked.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
