Chapter 3:
Sesshomaru stepped out of the shadows and stood before Kagome. Kagome looked up at him sadly. “Sesshomaru-sama.” “Tenshi.” “I did not think that you would come this soon.” Sesshomaru raised his brow. “I have been watching.” Kagome nodded and looked off into the distance again. Sesshomaru walked a few feet away and seemed to ignore everyone while his eyes lingered on the miko/tenshi. Sango moved closer to her friend. “What is he doing here?” Sango whispered to Kagome. Kagome blinked her eyes back into focus and glanced back at Sesshomaru. “There is a prophecy that was passed down my line about a tenshi that would cross the boundaries between human and demon. ‘A young woman, strong in heart, would attract the opposite in the demon world. A demon lord, strong in his own power, will follow and protect as the woman becomes Tenshi. Then he would make himself known to her as the one who will guide and the vow will be made. The search of a tenshi to get her wings is both dangerous and lonely. For an unclaimed tenshi will attract any male searching for a mate, but the tenshi must remain pure until she receives her wings and then within 10 moons must find a mate.’” Kagome looked back toward the horizon. “He is here to guide and protect me until such a time when I find my wings and become a full tenshi. Then…” Kagome glanced back at him before shaking her head. “Then you have to find a mate.” Kagome nodded. “It is time.” Kagome pointed toward the full moon high in the night sky. “Time for what?” Kagome took a step forward and stopped. “For the vow to be made.” “Tenshi.” Kagome turned fully to Sesshomaru. “This vow that must be done… know that I do it with distaste.” Kagome nodded. “I would ask for a favor, Kagome-sama.” Kagome nodded to Miroku. “Let us be your guards.” Kagome began to shake her head and was stopped by Shippo. “I want to oka-san.” Sango smiled and nodded. Kagome’s eyes filled with tears and she nodded slightly. She set Shippo down on the ground and closed her eyes. She raised her hands and etched a pattern in the moonlight. A circle of soft light encircled Kagome, Sango, Miroku, and Shippo. The light ended just in front of Sesshomaru. Kagome’s clothes became a kimono of moonlight, white and silvers flowing together. “I am Kagome, the Shikon Miko, the Holy Tenshi, the traveler, the searcher.” Sesshomaru looked up to the moon and then back to the woman before him. “I am Sesshomaru, the Demon Lord, the Ruler of the West, the guider, the protector.” Shippo stepped up in front of Kagome. “I am Shippo, I will guard her heart.” Miroku stepped around to her left. “I am Miroku, I will guard her spirit.” Sango stepped up to her right. “I am Sango, I will guard her body.” Sesshomaru stepped into the circle of light and bowed to Kagome before falling to one knee in front of her. “I, Sesshomaru of the Western Lands, vow to be your guide and protector from this day until the day that your path is complete. No one, not even this Sesshomaru, will cause you harm or taint that which is pure. This vow I make beneath the moon and on my life I shall not break it.” The circle of light became brighter as a stand of pale blue light tied Kagome and Sesshomaru together. Kagome held out her left hand and waited. Sesshomaru looked at the hand and then to Kagome before reaching out and placing his hand in hers. The light grew in radiance and the strand tightened around the two of them. Then all light faded and they stood once more in the darkness of the night. Sesshomaru was back on his feet in an instant and began walking away. Thank you… Sesshomaru didn’t even break his stride as her voice whispered into his mind. Once he was out of sight he stopped to look back at her. Her clothes were back to normal and she smiled weakly to her friends. Miroku and Sango helped her back into the hut. Sesshomaru looked down to his hand. There, against his pale skin was the evidence of what he had done. Her mark, the blue tear drop stood out like the moon in the night sky. As much as he never wanted to admit what had just happened, even to himself, the evidence was too much to run from. With a sneer Sesshomaru settled against a tree to wait out the night. When morning came they would begin the journey and the first challenge for him waited. “Inuyasha,” Sesshomaru snarled to himself. ********************** Kagome rubbed the back of her hand and frowned. When she looked down at it, the crescent was a vibrant blue. Her friends were all asleep as the night was late and morning would come soon. Kagome could not sleep. The pull of her wings was painful and she was constantly aware that they were out there waiting for her. Her mind kept going over her path now. Since she stood up to Kikyo, she could not longer suppress the tenshi within her. With her powers fully released she was placed at the beginning of a long hard road. She smiled to herself as she thought of the people who were placed on the path with her. Sango was the closest thing to a sister that she had and their bond has always been strong. Miroku was her silent teacher. Kagome giggled a little at that thought. She must be careful what lessons she learns from the monk. She did not want to find herself groping any man that comes along. Shippo was her son. He would still need and rely on her for years to come. And then there was Sesshomaru. Kagome began rubbing the crescent again. Sesshomaru was a mystery to her. Since her powers were growing she was getting visions and visits in her dreams from spirits with messages. She had known that Sesshomaru would be a part of her new path. She had not anticipated that he would be the one to guide her. She had thought, until recently, that Inuyasha would be her guide. Inuyasha… He would be a problem. She looked over to him and sighed. At least he was still passed out form earlier. Sesshomaru would have to handle him. Kagome shivered. She had doubts if Inuyasha would survive. She didn’t even know if she would stop Sesshomaru herself. Kagome frowned at that thought. Inuyasha certainly deserved his fair share of misfortune, but did he really deserve to die for what he has done? Kagome looked over to the half-demon again and sighed. Kagome closed her eyes and leaned against the wall. Morning would come soon, and with it the end of the night, a new beginning, and the death of the past. Kagome smiled. Her past and her future were dead to her. Inuyasha, her family, after tomorrow they would all be gone. Kagome got up and exited the hut quietly. She felt Sesshomaru’s eyes on her and shivered. She help up her hand and ran her fingers gently over the crescent there. I know that you can hear me… Kagome looked up to the full moon hanging low over the trees and began walking. She remained silent for a moment as she entered the tree line. His eyes never left her form. Just know that I won’t interfere when the time comes. Kagome continued walking until she was at the clearing with the well. Sesshomaru was standing next to the well looking at her. Kagome stopped just in the tree line and gazed up at the moon. “Explain.” Kagome shrugged. “Isn’t it enough that I won’t stop you from doing what we both know you have wanted to do for years?” Sesshomaru growled. Kagome didn’t move her eyes from the moon hanging in the sky. Sesshomaru took a step toward her and Kagome’s eyes snapped to him. There was no expression in her eyes as she watched him. “You cannot harm me. That was the vow you have made. You cannot break it now.” Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes at her in warning. “I shall not break it tenshi, fear not.” Kagome smiled sadly. “I do not fear you Sesshomaru. I don’t think that I ever did. There is such kindness and compassion in you that no one can see. That you do not even let yourself see.” Sesshomaru growled again. “I will kill him.” Kagome’s smile faded and she nodded. “I know.” She glanced once to the well and then turned on her heel and when back to Kaede’s hut. Sesshomaru stayed at the well as she walked away. His eyes were still narrowed in annoyance. She dared to treat him like this. He was a Demon Lord, one of the four Cardinal Lords. And he was at the beck and call of a miko gone tenshi. Sesshomaru turned and slashed a tree down. Turning on his heel he left the clearing and headed west, away from the village. Within a few minutes he came to another clearing. A little girl sat next to a fire singing softly to herself. A two headed dragon sat not far away from her as a little toad demon rested against him sleeping. The two headed dragon lifted his heads toward Sesshomaru as the little girl jumped up and ran to him. “Sesshomaru-sama! You were gone so long. Rin has been good while you were away.” Sesshomaru laid his hand on her head in approval. “Ah-Un.” The two headed dragon stood and lumbered toward Sesshomaru. The toad fell from Ah-Un and woke with a start. “Sesshomaru-sama! I did not think you would be back so soon milord.” The little toad gripped his staff of two heads as he watched the demon lord. Sesshomaru flicked his eyes to the toad before turning from the group and walking toward the village. Rin danced as she followed after him. “Hurry, hurry Master Jaken! You’re going to get left behind!” Rin yelled to the toad. Jaken looked around and jumped up with a yell. “Wait for me milord!” Jaken ran to catch up to Sesshomaru. Soon they were back at the tree that Sesshomaru had chosen to watch the tenshi. Without a word, Sesshomaru sat under the tree. Rin and Ah-Un settled under the tree next to Sesshomaru and promptly fell asleep. Ah-Un was curled around the girl to provide her with heat. Jaken stood a ways away and watched. Something had changed with the demon lord of the west. Nothing about the way he sat or acted gave any indication as to what was going on. Jaken knew that there was something bothering his lord. Jaken followed his gaze to the hut where the miko and her friends lay sleeping. Not knowing what to make of it, he settled against a tree of his own and fell asleep. Not once during the night did Sesshomaru take his eyes from that little hut on the edge of the village. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
