Chapter Three: Road To Recovery
Previously:Sesshoumaru peeled his eyes open slowly. He was covered in sweat with the yukata sticking to his skin. His groin throbbing intensely in aftershock. The only think he could think of was, “What. The. HELL was that?”
To make matters worse, Todoku was dabbing a damp cloth on his head with a look of concern. “I thought you were having a fever fit, do you feel okay?” She had a bamboo pot of water ready for him to drink.
“I’m fine….a…dream…” was all he could muster. Not only was it shocking that he hadn’t had a wet dream since his early adolescent years, but the dream involved…
“Here,” Her voice startled him this time. He didn’t even realize she’d sat him up. Confusion, as well as being a little asleep still, overwhelmed him so much at this point that he didn’t even care about her helping him drink.
He took long, gulping drinks of water that he managed to chug the bamboo pot in one go. Not to mention the water itself was very refreshing and cool. Contrary to Todoku’s concern, he actually felt really good, but he didn’t want to remind himself as to why he felt so good and relieved. Todoku holding him so close to her as she helped him, wasn’t really helping all that much either. The only thing he was really thankful for was the fact that the comforter was thick enough to shield something he didn’t wish for her to see. At least until he could defend himself when the awkward moment arises that Todoku discovers her sheets were now filled with his essence. He didn’t even want to think about the damage he caused on the borrowed yukata.
Thankfully, it wasn’t Todoku that changed the sheets. It was her vassal Inga, the deer demon, that cleaned him up. “Does…she normally leave the cleanup to you?” Sesshoumaru asked.
“Actually, she doesn’t. But she said that she needed to tend to some other patients in the hospital,” she answered him. “She didn’t want questions from the nurses on why she’s been paying so much more attention to you,” she smiled at him. He picked up on Inga’s motherly aspect.
Her response, of course, did nothing to ease Sesshoumaru’s nerves, “Why am I even feeling this way? Why should I even care about how she feels? Or even feel embarrassment about this whole thing at all? This is ridiculous. VERY ridiculous…”
“You doing okay this morning?” her voice snapped him from his thoughts. She had a small bowl of homemade stew. “Think you can stomach anything?”
As much as he wanted to tease her about not being the one to change him out, and based on the last couple of times he’s tried to tease her, he wasn’t going to try it this time. “I’ll try,” he answered.
Todoku propped him up on a few more pillows. Sesshoumaru managed to nibble on a few of the veggies and drink some of the soup before he couldn’t anymore. Todoku smiled, “Well at least you have somewhat of an appetite; you’re making progress. Kinda slow, but it’s progress…”
Sesshoumaru just looked at her then. There was something about her smile that gave him a warm feeling starting in his chest going all the way down. Of course feelings like this almost never involved the brain. Todoku blushed when she made eye contact with him. Sesshoumaru was the one to break the awkward tension though, “Did you know my father, by chance?” a pressing question that really had been bugging him all night.
It took a minute to shake off the stare he gave her, “Um…yes. He was a very good friend of our family,” she did have a sad look in her eyes when she thought about him. Were they that close?
“Friend of the family?” Sesshoumaru questioned. There was really only one family of allies his father could always depend on. Could she be a part of them?
“Yes, you see…”Todoku started cleaning him up after his small breakfast. “My grandfather first came to this land a long time ago from a country called Israel. Long story short, he wanted to build a habitat here for his family. Your father was in rule over this land at the time…which I’m assuming is yours now, and my grandfather bowed down to the Great Dog Demon asking for a peaceful habitat in exchange for battle help in wartimes. Of course beside all the political stuff, they became great companions and friends. My grandfather then passed away in a battle that my father was also in as a young boy. Because he was so young and because my grandmother was now single with 4 children, the Great Dog General made a point to watch over my father and his 3 little sisters at least until they were old enough to fend for themselves,”
“He was even gracious enough to teach her father how to fight and treated him much like another son,” Alanna came in from her place on the workbench mixing herbs. “I think he grew to love our family quite a bit,”
“So you’re Michodou’s brood?” Sesshoumaru asked. He knew about his father’s companionship with a demon cat clan known as the Ruah Clan. He always thought they were pretty strange, but it was only because their customs and rituals come from the other side of the planet. Michodou came around his father’s dwelling pretty often when Sesshoumaru was young. After Michodou’s coming of age, he and his father would become more of buddy-type friends as opposed to a teacher-student relationship, so the visits never really ended. Michodou was a pretty young demon only aging about 300 years before Sesshoumaru. This meant that Michodou was a pretty young father.
“Yes, his first born…” Alanna answered for Todoku.
“You…mean only born,” Todoku corrected. Alanna wanted to say something more, but just went back to crushing herbs. “Well, why do you ask anyway? Did I look familiar?”
Well come to think of it, she did bear her father’s trademark tail and ears, except his were white with black tips. “It just seemed like you knew who I was,”
“Yeah,” she paused a moment. “Father would always ask how his family life was when he came to stay with us. Of course you came up in that conversation quite a bit,”
“I did, huh…” Sesshoumaru replied. He never thought his father would talk about him much, but then again, this was Michodou; practically like brothers when they got together.
“I, uh, even wondered what you’d be like,” Todoku blushed. “When I first met you 6 months ago, I was so blown away to find out I had just met The Great Dog General’s son without realizing it, I couldn’t stop staring at you… I’m sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable, by the way,”
“Heh, I’m used to it. Just don’t get too attached to me. I’m far out of your league…” Sesshoumaru scoffed only meaning to tease her. But that last part had a very bad sting to it that pained even him.
“I wasn’t…” Todoku tried to explain herself. The small squeak in her voice told Sesshoumaru that was the very wrong thing to say. Todoku struggled not to let her emotions get to her and shook off that comment. “I’m not looking for anything but your health. That’s all…”
It was impossible to tell who got more bothered by his comment. Sesshoumaru felt he should save himself, but his pride got in the way and he stayed silent. The tension, however, was so thick a dog would have trouble chewing through it. Todoku’s sigh and sudden smile startled everyone in the room, “Anyway! I’ve got some medicine ground up for you,” She retrieved it from the shelf residing just above the workbench. Inga and Alanna were staring at her while she got up to the shelf. She winked at them to let them know she was gonna be fine.
“Now this jelly is supposed to aid you with the pain and can help the reproduction of blood more quickly,” Todoku returned to his side. “And I’ve got some flavored wine here to help you chase it down,” she scooped up some of the blue-green gel substance onto her pointer and middle fingers. Alanna poured some of the berry wine into a saucer and had it at the ready.
Sesshoumaru looked at her like she sprouted an extra head. “Don’t worry, I’m a professional. I’ll make sure I don’t get ya with my claws…” she said with a smile holding her fingers up to Sesshoumaru’s mouth. “Now say ‘ahhhh’…”
“You’re insane, you’re not putting your fingers in my mouth…”he scowled at her.
“You’re not going to be difficult are you? Because I can always put you to sleep with another herb and rub the stuff down your throat. Of course you’ll wake up with a hangover AND a horrid taste in your mouth. So it’s easier to just take it this way with a chaser,”
Sesshoumaru growled, but allowed her to open his mouth by placing her thumb on his chin. Todoku rubbed the gel on the middle of his tongue. “Now swallow,” she ordered and put the saucer in his hand for him to drink.
Sesshoumaru couldn’t help grimacing at the taste. He took the wine in with one gulp. Thankfully, that took the taste away instantly.
“You’re not done yet, you have to finish off this bowl,” and put more on her fingers. It looked like he had to do this about 2 more times.
He was panting by the end of what he thought was torture. Thankfully, the wine was instant palate cleanser. So it was a big relief when he was all done with his medicine dose.
“LORD SESSHOUMARU!!!”
The shriek almost made Todoku go into battle mode. It was Sesshoumaru’s little imp that followed him everywhere. “I looked everywhere for you my Lord!!”He ran to his lord’s bedside. “Oh, look at you! Ohhh that Inuyasha! He’ll pay for this!!” he then started grumbling obscenities.
“Hey, hey, hey!” Todoku had to shout over him. “I know you’re excited to see him, but keep in mind this IS a hospital and you have to be quiet!!”
“Quiet you half-breed! This has nothing to do with you!!” he shouted back in response.
“JAKEN!” Sesshoumaru yelled. The whole hut stood still. “She’s right, I could do without your senseless shouting,” he then said calmly.
“Y-yes, milord…” Jaken replied apologetically. He was near out of breath because of his excitable outburst.
“Now then, there’s nothing to worry about…Jaken. He’s going to be okay, he’s just got to recuperate for a little while,” Todoku reassured the imp. She felt if she told him about all his injuries, she’d have to admit Jaken into her hospital as well…
Jaken looked like he was on the verge of crying, “Oh milord… I thought you were dead when I couldn’t find you…I’ll stay by your side here, okay?”
“Feel free to do that, just try to take his needs into consideration and allow him to rest,” Todoku said getting up to put her supplies back on the shelf. Todoku even brought Jaken a pad to sit on so he’d be more comfortable.
“Thank you, sorry about earlier,” Jaken said. He felt it right to apologize; after all, she is looking after his lord with great care.
“It’s fine, if I took everything so personally, I’m in the wrong business,” Todoku said with a smile.
“I’m sorry, too…..about earlier…” Sesshoumaru had his eyes closed and retained his ever-emotionless face. “You know what I’m talking about…”
Todoku stood dumbfounded for a moment before answering; “Um, yeah…”she was still trying to comprehend the situation. “I-it’s fine,”
“Um, well we’ll be going to the fields. The days are getting cooler, we need firewood…” Inga said trying to air the hut out of awkward tension; Alanna was perched on her shoulder.
“Ah! I’ll join you!” Todoku stood up. “Are you going to be okay for a little while?”
“Yes…”Sesshoumaru merely answered.
“Okay, just send your ward out to me if you need anything,” Todoku gently said and left the hut with her vassals.
“It’s amazing Master…that young woman is so nice even after mistreatment,” Jaken commented to his lord.
“Yes, that mentality of hers will get her killed if she doesn’t watch it.” With that, Sesshoumaru dozed off for a nap. He hated to admit it, but Jaken was right. That same mentality is causing a lot of emotion that Sesshoumaru has never really felt before. Todoku continued to treat him with care even after all his harsh words insulting her; she forced herself to stay up all night for him making sure his condition was stable, “She welcomed me into her forest home even after I tried to kill her…..cried tears of joy just because I was alive…”
All this realization caused an all new emotion to surface in him. He couldn’t name it or know what it was. He didn’t even know how to handle it. All Sesshoumaru knew was that the half-demon Todoku was very peculiar indeed…
