Chapter 4:
Inuyasha finally returned the next morning, lucky for him, Kagome had plenty of time to cool off. She wasn't really mad at him for running off to see Kikyo anymore, her newfound infatuation with Naraku saved him from that, but him considering her as 'no reason' to stay in this world hurt deeply. He was her best friend, but treated her worse than her supposed enemy did.
Before Kagome could lay into him though, he picked up the still lingering scent of Naraku coming off her. "What happened? Did Naraku come by last night? You reek of his stench, Kagome," he wrinkled his nose to show disgust. She only glared at him."Yes he did, Inuyasha," Sango growled in Kagome's defense, "while you were away, Naraku ambushed Kagome in the woods by herself.""What the hell were you doing out there in the first place, idiot?" he accused. "I was gathering firewood, and if you hadn't taken off to go see Kikyo, you would have been close enough to detect his scent," she accused right back. "So don't go blaming it on me, Inuyasha, when you failed to protect me like you promised." Not that she would change anything that happened, but she sure wasn't going to let Inuyasha off the hook that easily, especially if he was going to insult her. Her words had the desired effect, bringing back a wave of guilt and making Inuyasha hang his head. "What did he want? Did he... like last time?" Inuyasha asked, ashamed that he may have let that monster do that to Kagome again. Kagome blushed, but before she could form an answer, Shippo intervened, "Kanna's mirror showed her that you ran off with Kikyo."Inuyasha looked confused so Miroku explained further, "It seems the mirror can be used to spy on whoever Naraku wants. For all we know, he could be observing us right now, Inuyasha." Kagome thought over this, wondering to herself if Naraku was watching her. She shook her head to clear such romantic thoughts. 'No, he wants me for my body, nothing else. I can't fall for him, it would only hurt later,' she scolded herself. Even though he never got a straight answer, Inuyasha was sure Naraku had forced some kind of attention onto Kagome again. His scent was all over her, and you don't get that just from talking. She also blushed at the question; that was proof enough.
Naraku was sitting in his darkened room, brooding over his plan versus his desires. He had so many possible ways to use Kagome to hurt Inuyasha and increase his own power, but which one would be the most beneficial. Originally, he intended to merely bed the girl, causing Inuyasha to feel the betrayal of yet another woman in his life, but lately, he came to realize she could do so much more. It was without question that he would have her, his desires would not settle for anything less. However, to acquire her alliance, have her assisting him from within her own group, difficult as it may be to turn her, would not only be enjoyable to weave such a web, but the rewards would be immeasurable. The look on Inuyasha's face when he learns she was working for him for so long would be priceless. He would destroy Inuyasha from the inside out, his downfall stemming from his own heart. The same for the rest of the pathetic group that fought against him; they would all feel the sting of Kagome’s betrayal, only further tainting the jewel. Kagome was not an easy subject though. She was fiery and strong-willed. In order to flip her, he'd need her unequivocal trust. She would need to feel more for him than simply lust. Luckily for him, manipulating human emotions was a specialty. And then, when all she has left is he, because everyone else abandoned and shunned her, he’d shatter her heart and feed her pain and remorse to the jewel. She’d fall powerless to resist him, and with her jewel then darkened with all that misery, he’d finally complete it and end her life. The corrupted sacred jewel would be his, and Kagome would be his ultimate tool to attain it.
The group of shard hunters had turned around, looping back towards Kaede's village and the bone-eaters well at Kagome's insistence. She needed to get more supplies and had a few tests coming up as well.
"This place looks familiar," Kagome noted idly to herself. "We are in spider-head territory," Inuyasha answered, giving the unspoken warning to the others to be careful. "Oh yeah, this was the same area where we found Tamari," Kagome recalled. Kagome's innocent observation spurred memories in the others. "You mean Naraku's wench?" Inuyasha growled. "I'll kill her if I see her. Any ally to Naraku doesn't deserve to live.""Now Inuyasha, shouldn't we give her a chance to defend her honor first?" Miroku spoke calmly. "After all, her aura did not feel evil.""Yeah," Sango agreed, "she may have known Naraku, but the way she spoke of him, I don't think she knew he was evil.""And how exactly did she speak of him?" Inuyasha sent an accusing glance towards the girls, crossing his arms over his chest. "Yes, what had you two been discussing when we encountered Naraku immediately after her suspiciously convenient departure?" Miroku pointed out the coincidental events. "N-nothing," Kagome stuttered, "nothing important. Right, Sango?""Yeah, nothing important," Sango readily agreed, "just harmless girl talk.""What the hell is girl talk?" Inuyasha barked but was all but ignored. "Whatever information she relayed about him could potentially be used against him," Miroku explained, "thus making it wise to inform us as to your conversation." The girls shared nervous looks, both sets of lips clamped shut tightly. No way they would ever admit to the guys what they had talked about that night. "Bozo's right," Inuyasha growled, getting aggravated at the girls’ silence, "now spill." "Umm, Inuyasha..." Shippo interrupted skittishly, glancing all around."Quiet runt," he snapped back, "this is an adult conversation.""But, Inuyasha," Shippo persisted, "we're surrounded." This got their attention. Diverting Inuyasha from his interrogation of the girls toward instead, gauging the threat of whatever had them trapped. He had been so intently questioning them, he hadn't even scented the hordes of spider-heads in the vicinity. Their eyes glowed from the shadows of the forest, constantly increasing in number. Instinctively, Inuyasha flexed his claws in warning, "You get one warning before I gut all of you; take one step closer and you'll die." His words seemed to have no effect and Inuyasha knew that if they all attacked at once he likely wouldn't be able to protect Kagome. Before any fighting could take place however, the hordes suddenly began dropping out of the trees. At first glance they appeared dead, until one snored loudly. They had suddenly fallen asleep. Glancing behind him, he found the humans and Shippo succumbing to the same fate. He, too, suddenly felt unbearably drowsy, dropping down to his knees, struggling to remain conscious. He hardly registered when his strength gave out and his face fell to rest on the forest floor. The last thing he saw was the silver glint of the moon reflecting off sparkling, iridescent wings as sleep finally claimed him.
'Heavy,' was the first thing that came to mind as Inuyasha struggled to open his eyes. It was light out now, much further into the day than he usually slept. Last he knew they were surrounded by spider-heads and preparing to fight. Had they captured him, poisoned him? 'Is that why my body feels so heavy,' he wondered. With great effort, he lifted his head and was relieved to see the others laid out beside him, unharmed in a grassy clearing, with not a spider web in sight.
"You should rest," a soft feminine voice suggested. The voice sounded familiar, but he couldn't place it in his groggy state. "It takes a while for my sleeping powder to wear off."Refusing to follow advice, he turned his head to the other side and growled at what he saw, "You! What are you doing here?""I live here, remember," Tamari looked at him curiously, "why all the hostility? You were gruff before, but now you seem angry at me.""Uugh, my head," Miroku groaned, pulling attention, "I feel like I've had way too much sake." He was placed at the far end with Shippo and Kirara separating him from Sango. Obviously, Tamari remembered his lecherous tendencies. He turned his head to the side to see his sleeping companions, Inuyasha struggling to sit up, and Tamari seated on the other side of the obviously irritated half-demon. "Lady Tamari, did you see what happened to us? And where are we?""The wench used some sort of sleeping powder on us," Inuyasha growled, "and if I find out she's working for Naraku I'll kill her myself.""Oh, so that's what's got you so on edge," she answered as if it all made sense, "and here I thought it was because a female saved your lives." She giggled before continuing. "I can assure you, Inuyasha, my relationship with Naraku is not one of business, and as to what happened monk, I doused the area in a sleeping powder. It's not a very good single target attack so it was inevitable that it would affect you guys, as well as those spiders. I then brought you here to recover, away from danger.""You have my gratitude, Lady Tamari," Miroku attempted to bow his head while still laying down. "How long might the effects of the powder last?" His gaze was fixed on Sango and it was obvious the wheels were turning, whether out of concern or lechery was unclear. "Within the hour, I'd assume long enough for each of you to wake. The fox tyke taking the longest due to his small size," she assured. "By this evening, you should have your energy back. I'd suggest you stay the night here, though. As you've seen, the forest surrounding my grove is filled with spider-heads.""That is very kind of you," Miroku hastily agreed before Inuyasha could say otherwise, "we would be honored."
Some time later, Miroku was sitting on the opposite side of the clearing with a fierce red handprint across his calm face. He foolishly thought it safe to grope Sango as she lay asleep, still out of it from the sleep powder. His outcast status attested to the contrary. Inuyasha sat cross-legged nearby, scowling untrustingly at Tamari as he listened in on their conversation.
"You're grove is beautiful, Tamari," Kagome complimented, looking around at the plentiful fruit-bearing trees and flowering bushes. "How do you keep all those spider-heads out of here though?""The perimeter of my lands has special bushes planted that repel all lower level spider demons," Tamari began explaining. "There are also vines growing into a mesh between the perimeter trees that have fuzzy leaves perfect for holding my poison powder. The spider-heads have learned the hard way of its lethality so that now, I hardly have to use it anymore. The mere possibility of its presence is enough to deter them from intruding.""That's really clever," Sango noted. "I've instructed several villages to employ similar techniques to make their defenses seem stronger than they could maintain. It's usually quite effective on lower level demons, however, the ones with higher intelligence can see through the ruse with ease.""Do your defenses have any effects on higher level demons?" Kagome inquired."The repellant bushes didn't seem to have any effect," Tamari recalled, "but the poison powder varies between no effect to causing sickness. I would suggest avoiding the perimeter, it could easily kill a human.""I would like to go check it out," Sango stood up, "the knowledge of these plants could prove useful in helping villages plagued by these insistent spider-heads. My mask should protect me from any of the poison powder." Tamari nodded and directed her to the nearest location. "Come Kirara.""Tamari," Kagome asked, after they were out of sight, "I don't suppose you'd have a hot spring around here anywhere, would you? I haven't had a chance to bathe in far too long.""Of course I do," Tamari smiled cheerfully, "what home would be complete without such a luxury."
"Can you tell me more about Naraku, such as how you met?" Kagome asked quietly as she lathered up her hair.
"So, I take it you liked what you saw, and now want to know more?" Tamari teased, causing Kagome to blush deeply and lower her gaze. "Don't be embarrassed. It's hard not to be fascinated by him.""It's just that lately, I feel like I'm being stalked, being lured, by him and I don't understand it," Kagome struggled to explain her conflicting emotions about her enemy-turning-obsession. "I've never been overly interested in males before, but now...""Are you saying he's perusing you as something other than an enemy?" Tamari asked unbelievingly, since Kagome had told her all about their feud with Naraku last time. Kagome blushed again, "That's what it looks like, but I don't know to what end. I figured you might be able to give me a little more insight into him so I can figure out his intentions.""Well," Tamari waved her hand dismissively, recalling her own experiences with him, "it's probably just a quick fix. I could easily imagine him getting a thrill out of turning his enemy's girl into his own play thing.""But, if that's the case-" Kagome was quickly interrupted by a rambling, rationalizing demoness. "If it were me, I'd definitely give him what he wants and take the immense euphoria he can give in return," Tamari still seemed as if she was talking to herself moreso than Kagome. "But, I was... willing," Kagome paused as Tamari looked at her confused. "I was willing, or at least not coherent enough to resist, and he knew it. He read my mind even. But then, he just left. After getting me all worked up, he simply left saying it was too soon." Tamari stared dumbfounded. "That's why I'm confused about his intentions. If he simply wanted me as a quick fix, or to show up Inuyasha, why would he wait like that?"After a long pause, Tamari finally spoke up, "It sounds like he has longer term plans that include you. I'd advise you to be cautious.""What do you mean?" Kagome's voice wavered. "Underneath that facade of his, you have to remember, he's a spider. And there's nothing a spider likes better than spinning a complicated web to ensnare its prey," Tamari carefully formed her words to strike fear. Kagome gulped hard, remembering all the evil things he's done to her friends. "He's not to be taken lightly, Kagome, lest you find yourself unable to deny him. Overcoming his addictive abilities is not easy." At this last line, Tamari seemed to retreat into herself, into her own thoughts. There was more that she wasn't telling, but now was not the time to press. This left Kagome to ponder Tamari's unclear meaning.
Being unable to travel until morning, Kagome decided to use her time wisely and study for her upcoming English test. She knew it would be a killer if she didn't and had no intention of failing, but was finding it difficult to concentrate after Tamari's foreboding warning about Naraku.
She knew she had been foolish allowing herself to desire him, to be seduced by him, manipulated into allowing him so close, but it wasn't until she heard the words from someone else did it finally seem real and not some twisted fantasy. Nothing good could come from him, she was finally able to admit that to herself. He destroys the life of everyone his influence touches. Even Tamari, Kagome could now see, had some hurtful secret about him. This 'affair' of sorts, had to end before she got herself buried any deeper. As Kagome sat and read her textbook by the flickering light of the campfire, Naraku was once again watching her through Kanna’s mirror. He retained the skills and knowledge of each of the countless demons that made up his body. It only mildly surprised him to see Kagome reading a book in a foreign language, since he already knew she was far more educated than most humans. Searching his memories, he found he knew this language, or rather, one of his many demons did. A demon that had traveled the continent extensively. "This may prove useful," he noted to himself, then turned his attention to the other awake female in their little camp, "and Tamari, what are you going to do now, jealous little butterfly?" His evil chuckle bounced off the walls of his darkened room, sinister plans evident in its sound.
(A/N: Opinions. What is your opinion of Tamari? Is she a worthwhile OC or would you rather she fade into the background. I’m being vague with her because I have yet to decide on her and Naraku’s backstory. I have a few tasks for her yet, but after I have yet to decide.
Oh, and thank you all for you’re reviews. They really make my day. :D )
