Sango quickly joined Kagome in the stream, waiting on her friend to tell her what was the matter. It had seemed like a pretty typical day except for the kiss. Maybe that was it. Maybe Kagome was trying to choose between Kouga and Houjou.
“Ano, Sango-chan?” Kagome asked softly. “Is it possible for two guys to kiss exactly alike?”
“You mean Kouga kissed the same way as Houjou?” Sango asked for clarification.
“Hai. I even cut my tongue in the same place.”
“I suppose it would be possible, Kagome-chan. I do a lot of things exactly like my family since that is where I learned them.”
“How could Houjou and Kouga learn to kiss the same?”
“I really don’t know. I have never been kissed before.” Sango replied honestly. “Was there anything at all different?” Sango asked. The two girls fell silent as they thought.
“You said Houjou tasted enticing!” Sango exclaimed. “So… What did Kouga taste like?”
Kagome flushed and looked down. “The same.”
“Huh.” Both girls slumped back, defeated. Neither had enough experience to make an educated guess. The only person in their group that had the experience, neither wanted to ask.
Inuyasha listened to their conversation from a safe distance. Should he tell Kagome his theory? His eye fell on the crater formed from his first attempt. Never mind. She’d find out soon enough. Kouga never was the most patient. He’d give himself away, eventually.
Inuyasha acted nonchalant as the two females returned from their bath. How could they be so stupid? If it walked like a duck, quacked like a duck, and had feathers like a duck, chances were it was, in fact, a duck.
Miroku had set the camp to rights, packing everything and putting out the fire. They set off following Kouga’s trail. Inuyasha had wanted to hear about this ‘lead’ for himself. The day passed by without a single encounter. Not even a traveler going the opposite direction. As darkness began to fall, the group tried to locate a place to rest for the night.
Inuyasha scented the air and leapt off in a hurry. Miroku readied his kazaana. Sango prepared to launch her weapon. Kagome notched an arrow. Kirara transformed with Shippou on her back ready to help. The group remained silent, waiting.
“Why do we have to do it? Kouga should know by now it would be quicker if he did it himself.” Hakkaku said to his companion.
“Hai. It would be even better if our sis finally joined our tribe officially. Kouga’s been so cranky lately. You’d think he’d never gone without before.” Ginta replied.
Hearing a noise behind them, the wolf youkai turned to fight.
“I am Kouga’s right hand man, Kibimori Hakkaku!”
“I am Kouga’s left hand man, Akubo Ginta!”
“Face us at your own peril!” The two chorused assuming different defensive positions.
Inuyasha walked out chuckling. “So, the wimpy wolf can’t handle a little frustration? Heh, heh, heh. I knew he wasn’t so tough.”
Hakkaku and Ginta dropped their fists and straightened. “Oi, Inuyasha, have you seen an abandoned sawmill around here?” Ginta asked.
Hakkaku slapped him in the back of the head. “Shut up, baka!”
“Sawmill? Nope. We have been traveling all day and haven’t seen anything, not even travelers.” Inuyasha said calmly while he crowed internally. He now had the same lead Kouga did! “Why don’t you pop in and visit your ‘sis’ for a bit. She might know more since she’s travels slower than I do.” If they accepted, maybe he could learn more.
Both wolves’ faces lit up. “Sis is nearby?”
“Just around that bend. Let me go first to announce your presence so they don’t attack.” Inuyasha raced forward. As he reached the bend, he heard his group shift slightly in preparation. “Oi! It’s me. Ginta and Hakkaku are coming to say hello to Kagome.” Inuyasha said as he rounded the bend.
He smirked as everyone dropped his or her weapons and guard. He would have to wait until later to share his news, but that was okay. The two demons rounded the bend a minute after the hanyou. They rushed to Kagome.
“Hey little sis!” Ginta said.
“Doing okay? Dog-breath is treating you right, isn’t he? You can always come stay with us, you know.” Hakkaku said keeping one eye on the hanyou in case he took offense at his words.
“Hey you guys!” Kagome said hugging them quickly. “I’m fine and yes, he’s treating me well. What brings you two over here?”
“Ah, Kouga sent us out on a reconnaissance mission.” Hakkaku said tactfully before Ginta could say anything. They were under strict orders to not involve Kagome in the battle with Naraku. Kouga was trying to end it all so he could finally claim Kagome without any worries over her getting killed or used against him.
“Sounds exciting.” Kagome replied.
“It’s actually very boring.” Ginta answered tiredly.
“Would you like to remain for dinner?” Kagome offered.
“We have to be going little sis. Kouga will have our hides if we don’t get back soon with something.”
“How about I send Kouga some food as well? He was looking a bit skinnier than usual.” Kagome said thoughtfully. She slowly eyed Hakkaku and Ginta. They were a bit on the slim side as well. Not that they had ever been hefty. “Are you guys eating okay?” Kagome asked softly. A note of worry crept in her voice.
“Hai. We’ve just been on the move so much lately trying to track down Naraku. Kind of eating on the run. Great for the digestion.” Hakkaku said with a smile. Ginta nodded his agreement.
Deciding, Kagome walked over to her pack and rummaged through it. She quickly pulled out a bag of snack bars. People who had no time to cook or wait on food used them. This sounded like the wolf pack. Kagome handed it to Hakkaku. “There you go. More food for on the run.”
“Arigato, little sis. We must be off.” The two wolves ran off back the way they had come.
“That was sweet of you, Kagome.” Sango said.
“Worried about your wolf, wench?” Inuyasha asked trying to get a rise out of Kagome. For a change she didn’t rise to the bait.
She turned serious eyes to meet his. “As a matter of fact I am. I have a bad feeling, Inuyasha.”
The hanyou straightened all senses on alert. “Bad feeling as in, something evil approaching or bad feeling this is going to end badly?”
“Both.” Kagome whispered. Sango shivered and let Miroku wrap one arm around her. Miko’s instincts were seldom off.
“Then it’s almost time to end it.” Inuyasha said gearing up to fight. “We need to look for an abandoned sawmill. That’s what the wolves are looking for.”
The group nodded. Tomorrow it would begin. The end was finally in sight.
* Present Day *
Kouga sighed heavily and poked his food while Ginta and Hakkaku watched him worriedly. The agony of waiting was killing him. Tomorrow he would begin his daily visits to the well. Kagome should be home in two days. The battle was supposed to start tomorrow.
Pushing back from the western styled table, Kouga wandered off to his room, unable to remain there any longer. He flung himself backwards on his bed gazing at the night sky through his window. ‘Please let her come home safe.’ He wished on every star he could see. Sighing, he rolled over and fell asleep.
Ginta quietly shut the door. “He’s finally asleep.” He whispered to Hakkaku. The two went off to watch some TV before going to bed.
* Kouga’s Dream Sequence *
Naraku’s evil laughter rang out as he pierced Kagome’s side with one of his tentacles. He snatched the vial of shards from her neck in triumph. Kouga screamed and fought to get free from the cage of tentacles surrounding him.
Inuyasha lay in a bloody heap; the tetsusaiga lay a few feet from him. The demon exterminator and her fire cat had their hands full dodging Naraku’s attacks. Miroku was an unconscious form on the other side of the clearing.
Kouga’s wolves were dividing their energy between trying to free him and defending themselves. Kouga put every ounce of energy he had in using his torn legs to break free of the prison holding him. Naraku had taken his shards in the first part of the battle.
When Kagome’s purifying arrows injured the half-demon, he removed the shard from the boy exterminator. The lifeless shell collapsed immediately upon its removal. The taijiya had gone into a berserker rage after that destroying everything around her. As the battle went on, the rage slowly left. There wasn’t enough energy to sustain it.
As Naraku held the completed jewel aloft, he crowed his triumph. He missed the glow of Kagome’s miko aura flaring. Naraku held the jewel, savoring the discoloration appearing on it from his evil touch. He slowly became aware of unbearable pain flaring up from his tentacles. Looking over in shock, he saw the injured miko’s power moving up him, through his body, purifying as it approached.
As he focused his evil jaki on stopping the purification, he missed seeing Kouga’s flying kick. Naraku reeled. Even without the shards, the wolf’s legs packed a powerful wallop. Naraku turned to attack the wolf when he lost his shoulder and arm holding the jewel. He turned in slow motion seeing the exterminator catching her weapon. Naraku went from winning to slowly losing. The tide was turning.
Not bothering to protect himself, he searched frantically for the jewel. A low growl had him facing Inuyasha’s demon side. Naraku knew he’d already pierced through the hanyou’s chest so it was just a matter of allowing the half-breed to bleed to death.
Naraku gasped as the hanyou moved with Sesshoumaru’s lightening quick speed. He never saw the claws descent as they sliced open his jugular. Naraku made gurgling sounds as he willed his throat to heal. Pain shot through his chest. Looking down, he saw both Kouga and Inuyasha’s fists plunged inside as they systematically shredded all of his vital organs.
Naraku’s control slipped and Kagome’s miko powers washed through him dissolving every piece of him in their wake. Inuyasha fainted as Kagome’s aura swept over him, healing. Kouga grimaced as his broken ribs re-knitted. It was somehow urgent that he reach Kagome’s side, before he was completely healed.
He struggled with his legs. They refused to move as they were healed. Kagome’s aura slowly faded, replaced by a new glow. It was a dark purple but somehow was blinding at the same time. “NOOOOO!!!!!” Kouga screamed as he lunged forward to grab Kagome. He reached her a second too late. She had vanished.
* End Dream Sequence *He sat up panting heavily; his body was drenched in sweat. Kouga miserably ran his hands through his wet hair as silent tears ran down his face. Ginta and Hakkaku had learned over the centuries not to bother him when he had this dream. He knew they were outside fretting. He could hear their whispers.
“Knock it off you two! I’m trying to get some sleep!” Kouga yelled gruffly.
“Hai.” Chorused the two in relieved tones. The time was finally upon them. Kagome, their little sis, was about to join the tribe officially!
* Back in Sengoku Jedai *
“We’ve scoured every inch of this area, Inuyasha. Can we please rest?” Kagome asked wearied with the hanyou’s need to find the mill before the wolves.
“Feh.” Everyone heaved a sigh of relief as they dropped where they stood. Inuyasha’s ears swiveled around trying to hear anything at all besides the odd silence they had been surrounded with all day.
“I haven’t seen any wildlife since this morning.” Miroku said casually.
“Funny, neither have I.” Sango answered. Kagome nodded.
“Yeah it’s too quiet. I wonder why?” Inuyasha said as he tried to scent the air. Puzzled he sniffed again. “Oh, Hell!” Inuyasha yelled as he pulled tetsusaiga out of its sheath. Everyone followed the hanyou’s lead not knowing what was going on.
“Inuyasha?” Kagome asked softly as she scanned the area trying to find what alerted the hanyou.
“This entire thing is fake. I can’t believe I fell for it. I was too eager to one up Kouga, I guess.” As soon as Inuyasha said that, Kouga and his tribe appeared on the horizon, running full out. “Speak of the devil…”
As the wolves reached the hanyou’s group, Kouga and Inuyasha studied each other. “You too?” Kouga asked.
“Yeah. How long has your group been at it?”
“Since before dawn. Yours?”
“About the same.”
“Any minute now.”
“Yep.”
Kagome walked forward. “What are you two talking about?”
Kouga and Inuyasha exchanged embarrassed looks. Kouga sighed and motioned for the hanyou to explain.
“Remember how we kept saying we had bad feelings and everything was too quiet?” When everyone nodded, the hanyou continued. “Well, it’s because we are inside Naraku’s barrier. He was letting us get exhausted as we searched so we’d be an easy kill.”
Dark clouds formed in the sky and a castle appeared around them. “How right you are, Inuyasha. For being so good as to figure out my little plot, here’s a treat for you.” Naraku’s disembodied voice solidified to reveal the demon clutching Kikyo’s clay shell.
“Inuyasha…” Kikyo whispered as she stretched out a hand.
“Kukukukukukukuku!” Cackled Naraku. “What are you going to do now, half-breed?”
“Kill you.” Inuyasha said simply.
“So assured even with his love once again dying by my hands.” Naraku chortled evilly.
“That’s not Kikyo, you bastard. It’s just a lump of clay animated to look like her. Just because it contains her memories don’t make it real.”
“So… I guess you won’t mind when I do this, then, will you?” Before anyone could react, Naruku shattered Kikyo’s clay form. Three souls drifted out. Two vanished as they flew away. The third lingered floating aimlessly above the fractured clay pieces.
“TEME! KAZE NO KIZU!!!!!” Inuyasha roared launching into attack immediately.
Naraku easily avoided the blast laughing wildly. “So, you did mind?”
“Damn it! She was MINE to save and MINE to put to rest!” Inuyasha’s eyes flicked to that small piece of soul still hovering over the clay pieces. Pain filled his eyes as he realized Kikyo was still not at rest. “Killing you will set her free!” Inuyasha and Kouga rushed forward leaving everyone else to join as they could.
“Where are your detachments, Naraku?” Kagome called out, trying to distract as well as needing to know.
“You want to know, sweet Kagome?” Naraku’s form rippled as he began to change. A nasty poison gas seeped from his skin forcing everyone back. “See if you can find them.” Challenged Naraku as his true hideous form was revealed.
