Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha and will make no money from this work of fiction. This will apply to all chapters contained within. |
A/N: I am going to try and post two chapters together every few days until I get caught up. As always thanks to everyone who has taken the time to review any of my stories be it here or on other sites. I really do appreciate it!
Kagome was sitting at her desk going over the reports from the surviving members of the party that had capture InuYasha. It saddened her to learn that three of the casualties had young children. And even more distressing was that two of the children were in her spiritual healing class. They were going to be devastated.
Only those with exceptional power could perform healings with their energy. In fact there were currently only seven fully trained miko with enough power and three houshi. Of those untrained, there were only four.
There was going to be a huge backlash for her having let InuYasha go. She would definitely have to find time to go to the families personally and speak with them. They deserved to hear her reasons for letting the man who killed their loved ones go, personally. Maybe she could keep them from hating her if she let them vent their anger directly, and if not, well then she certainly couldn't blame them.
Her eyes drifted to the phone on the corner of her desk. She wondered when she would hear from the Inu no Taishou- if she would hear from him. It would be so much easier to tell these families that their fathers and brothers, and mother's and sisters hadn't died for nothing, that their sacrifice will be responsible for saving who knows how many lives.
She pulled open her lower drawer and drew out the forms that would need to be filed to see that the families had adequate financial support in their time of grieving. She knew money was little comfort in the face of such a loss, but it was the only thing she could do.
She had just placed her seal on the final form when her phone rang. She lifted handset from the cradle. "Hello."
"Miko," a deep male voice responded. "This Sesshomaru has received your message and wishes to arrange a meeting to discuss a temporary secession of hostilities and a transfer of the youkai children in your care."
Kagome stifled a gasp. It was finally happening. Of course she had tried to remain optimistic, but she hadn't wanted to get her hopes up. "Sesshomaru-sama, I can't tell you how much this means to me that you're willing to give me a chance to prove that a truce would be a worthwhile venture."
"Thank my brother, Miko," he said. "For it is on his word that I do this."
A great rush of gratitude swelled within her towards InuYasha. In spite of all the signs to the contrary she had known that it was not a mistake to place her trust in him. "When and where would you like to meet? And what are your conditions?"
"This Sesshomaru will be at the village of Midoriko in three days time at two in the afternoon, if that is acceptable," he replied.
"That will be fine," she said quickly. If she had to rearrange her whole schedule she would do it. There was no way she was going to be particular about the when and where, not when she was just grateful for this chance. "I assume you'll be bringing witnesses."
"You assume correctly. My party will consist of myself and my brother as well as five others of my choosing. I am not opposed to you bringing a similar number of your people," he told her.
Kagome was a bit shocked that he would be bringing InuYasha, since it would leave the youkai vulnerable and leaderless in the even that this were a trap. Something told her that this was a gesture that she should acknowledge. "Thank you for your confidence in my sincerity. You will not regret it, on my life."
There was a long silence and Kagome began to wonder if she had made a mistake, but before she could attempt to correct it Sesshomaru spoke. "You are not what I expected. I look forward to our meeting, Miko-sama."
The phone went dead in her hand and she couldn't help but to smile. Things were finally starting to fall into place. Now, she just had to decide who to take with her to the meeting.

Kagome carefully placed the scroll she was going to give to the Inu no Taishou in a protective tube and slipped it into her kimono. If three days had ever passed so slowly before, she certainly couldn't think of a time, but that didn't matter now. It was finally time for the parley, and she was determined to make this work.
She met the small, carefully selected group that was to accompany her on her mission just outside the main entrance of the central command building. She could see Mioku's disapproval written plainly on his face, but he said nothing and instead carried the box of scrolls without complaint. She hoped he would at least attempt to mask his true feelings once they arrived at Midoriko's village.
Beside Miroku, holding the other handle was Sango, her best friend who just happened to be trained in the ways of the taijiya. She too thought this whole plan was beyond foolish, but had still insisted on being there. She couldn't blame her friend for the way she felt considering that it had recently come to light that it was likely a youkai that had somehow forced her brother into slaughtering her family and friends.
Still, in spite of all that Kagome was convinced that she was doing the right thing. After all, youkai weren't the only species that had evil among their numbers. No, there were plenty of evil humans too.
The group headed for the cars. Sango and Miroku entered the car with her and the others climbed into the second vehicle. And following behind both the other two was a small bus carrying the youkai children they had rescued from the streets
"Kagome, I must again protest this course of action," Miroku said as the began the drive. "There is nothing to say that these youkai will honor a truce, even if they agree to it, and then we will be even worse off than we already are as they slaughter the unsuspecting."
Kagome sighed as she noticed Sango nodding. "Also it could be a trap," her friend added.
"Please, don't do this. I asked you both to come because there are no others I can trust more than the two of you," Kagome said quietly. "I know you both think this is a terrible idea, but I have to do something. Things can't go on the way they have been. I haven't told anyone but the numbers have been steadily climbing since Mama died. If something doesn't change soon we'll find ourselves in the middle of another Dark Time. I don't think either of you want that."
Miroku's eyes were wide as he studied her face. "It has become so desperate?"
Kagome nodded. "I can't let it come to that. I won't. Besides I really think this is going to work. I can't explain it exactly but I know there is something in that box that is going to change everything. I'm asking you both to trust me."
"Of course I trust you, Kagome," Sango told her. "I'm with you."
"Thank you," she said. "What about you Miroku? Can you give me this chance? Don‘t think I haven‘t heard what‘s being said. I need you with me."
The monk bowed his head slightly and replied, "I still do not agree with trying to negotiate with the youkai, but for you I will put those feelings aside. You have my full support, Miko-sama."
They arrived at the village ten minutes early. Midoriko's village was a historic site and had been since the time the original treaty between Midoriko and the Inu no Taishou was created on its grounds. It was considered neutral ground by both the youkai and by those with spiritual powers, since neither wanted to dishonor their respective former leaders. Kagome thought it seemed like the perfect place to try again to broker peace between the two groups.
In the center of the village was a large stone table upon which the original treaty had been signed and sealed with the blood of the original Great Miko and her youkai counterpart. Kagome directed Miroku and Sango to place the box upon the stone. Once it was done, they took up positions on either side of her. The others that had come with them spread out behind them and waited.
Kagome felt them first, coming from the West. "They will arrive in a two minutes, maybe less."
She could practically feel the tension her words had inspired, but pushed it from her mind. Soon all eyes were on the west as the youkai came into sight. The Inu no Taishou traveled on a cloud of youki. His brother ran beneath him with a speed that Kagome found quite awe inspiring. She wondered what it would be like to move so quickly and with such ease. She imagined it must be similar to flying. Behind them, some on the ground and some in the air the other youkai followed.
Sesshomaru landed gracefully across from her and she bowed. "Sesshomaru-sama, again you have my most esteemed gratitude for this opportunity."
The youkai lord inclined his head slightly. "Shall we get the matter of the children settled first. I have an escort waiting for them a short distance away."
"Of course," she replied as she nodded to one of the miko with her.
The young woman hurried towards the edge of the village and signaled to the driver of the bus to let the children out. Most of the young youkai looked uncertain and many were holding hands with whomever was beside them as they walked towards the gathering. However, as soon as they spotted Kagome, they broke into smiles and ran towards her.
She laughed as they reached her in a rush and nearly knocked her from her feet. She patted each of them as she could reach them and tried to listen as they all talked at once. Kouta the smallest of them jumped to her arms and she hugged him close.
"Okay, okay," she said gently. Kagome was completely oblivious to the way all of the youkai were staring at her , clearly in shock at what they were witnessing. "Settle down now. I have something important to tell you all."
"What is it?" Kouta asked. "Do you have pocky for us?"
She ruffled his hair and shook her head. "No pocky, but I have something even better. You are all going to be going to new homes to be with other youkai who will able to teach you all about the natural gift you possess."
"You're sending us away?" Kouta asked. "Do you not like us anymore?"
Kagome squeezed the boy in her arms more tightly. "Of course I still like you." She then turned and indicated a pleasant looking woman with bright red hair and grey green eyes. "You see that woman? She's a fox youkai like you and can teach you all about kitsune magic. I bet you she can even teach you how to hide your tail when you cast an illusion and a whole bunch of other things as well that I can't." The kitsune woman looked her in the eyes and then at Kouta and nodded. "I'll miss you, all of you, but you deserve to know who you are."
"Okay," Kouta agreed, jumping down. "Will I ever see you again?"
"I can't promise you that, but if things go the way I hope then I'm sure we will," she told him. "Now, go on, all of you."
They all gave her one last hug and made their way towards the youkai that were waiting to take them to their new home. Kagome watched them go and dabbed at her eyes with her sleeve, to keep her tears from falling. Once they were out of sight, she looked back at the youkai before her.
She reached into her kimono and pulled out the scroll. Holding it out in both hands she offered it to Sesshomaru. "I believe that this should be in your care."
The youkai lord took the offered item and opened it. He drew out the scroll and immediately his eyes widened. Beside him InuYasha stepped closer and sniffed the ancient parchment. The both looked to her for an explanation.
"So it his, then?" she asked. "I was certain that it was written by the legendary hanyou InuYasha. I hope you can forgive me but I needed something to convince the others of my kind that this meeting was warranted, and so I was forced to remove a scroll from the box and analyze it. Once I realized that it was his, I decided that the scroll was rightfully yours. There may be others, which I will gladly give to you, once we are done analyzing them and have settle this matter once and for all."
Sesshomaru looked at her and reached out to open the chest. She nodded and he lifted the lid. He examined several of the rolled papers and then returned them. As he closed the chest he said, "You do realize that all of these scrolls have been written in blood and imbued with either youkai or spiritual energy to preserve them?"
"Yes. It is one of the reasons I was certain that they are genuine," she replied. "Just as you have the power to recognize the youki and blood of you own, so do I and I have no doubt that part of the power invested in these scrolls is that of my blood, of Kikyou."
Sesshomaru studied her for a long moment and then signaled for one of the youkai with him to come forward. Kagome could feel her heart racing in her chest and a thick parchement was presented to the Inu no Taishou.
"Miorku, Sango, the chest," she said.
The two stepped forward and removed the chest from the stone. Kagome forced herself to breath normally as Sesshomaru unrolled the parchment. Her eye traveled the length of the paper as she read the words it contained. It didn't take long as the language was plain. It called for a temporary truce between their two groups, during which none with youkai blood would harm in any way one with spiritual power and none with spiritual power would bring harm to one with youkai blood. What's more it also proclaimed that the truce would only be ended when both groups returned to this place and declared it to be so. It was more than she had dared hope for.
"Is everything satisfactory, Miko-sama?" Sesshomaru asked.
"More than satisfactory, Sesshomaru-sama," she replied.
Sesshomaru looked to his brother. "InuYasha."
Kagome watched as the hanyou went for the sword at his hip and she quickly through up her hand to make sure no one behind her got the wrong idea and moved. Sesshomaru eyed her once before taking the battered blade and using it to slice his palm. He dipped his claw in the blood and signed the bottom of the parchment. Then he pressed the ring on his right hand into his palm, coating it in blood, so that he could add his family seal to the parchment as well.
Once InuYasha returned his sword to its sheath she drew out a small dagger from the belt at her waist. She winced as she made the shallow cut in her palm, but knew it had to be done. This was an agreement that had to be sealed in blood, just as the first treaty had been.
Beside her Miroku held out a small brush, and she used it to sign the truce agreement. After which, she added the seal of The Great Miko. As soon as it was done, she felt as if a huge weight had been lifted from her shoulders. She had done it. It wasn't a permanent end to the fighting that had been taking place over the last five hundred years, but it was start. And if she had her way, it would also be the end.
At the same time, Kagome and Sesshomaru placed their hands on the stone and spoke the words that would cause it to open. There was no sound as the stone split and revealed the place where the original treaty had been kept since it's creation. Together they placed the rolled parchment inside and then sealed the opening once again.
"By sunrise tomorrow it shall be known that none with youkai blood will harm any spiritual human, so I have decreed, and so it shall be on my honor as a youkai and on penalty of death. In blood I have so sworn." Sesshomaru announced formally.
Kagome cleared her throat and raised her head. "By sunrise tomorrow shall it be known that no human with spiritual powers will harm any youkai, so I have decreed and so it shall be on my honor as The Great Miko and on penalty of death. In blood I have so sworn."
A bright light engulfed the stone between them and when it faded there was no longer any way for anyone to object or declare the truce invalid. Only the Inu no Taishou and the Great Miko carried within them power to burn their oaths into the stone and by the old ways their word was law, irrefutable.
For the first time in five hundred years there would be peace.
