Once Kagome had cried every tear in in her body she was hiccupping softly, it was only once she was able to breathe again that she explained everything to her adopted son. He didn’t speak the whole time, letting her pour her soul out and gather it back up drop by drop until she was able to stand on her own and had begun to put things away because talking about it was upsetting her all over again. Distraction was key with Kagome when she was upset, but Shippo stopped her once she had rearranged all the items twice and was starting on a third time. “Momma. Stop.” She blinked, looking into his green eyes only to sigh and let her shoulders drop into an unsightly slouch. “So this Akihiko can pass through the well like you, looks similar to you, is unaffected by your holy powers, and is a demon. Does that make you a demon too?” his voice held a small ounce of hope, if she was a demon too he wouldn’t lose her to old age quickly.
“I don’t know. As far as I know I am human. Midoriko was a human, but Masaaki is an Inuyoukai and to my knowledge that would make me a hanyou like Inuyasha.” She trailed off, having not really thought that far since finding out the news. “But I don’t feel any different.” She looked lost as she looked up at her son and it pained him as much as seeing his late mother look upset.
“He did say you were going to be going through changes. And that you might be dangerous. Maybe that was what he meant.” He hated to say the next words, but he never lied to Kagome and he wasn’t going to start now. “I think he is right, I think you need to go with him. You need to find out the truth, or else it will slowly kill and you will end up like Kikyo; a walking shell of the woman you once were.” The words would sting, but she needed to hear them.
Kagome stared at him, for once understanding that he really wasn’t a child anymore. The loss of his birth parents and the travels with the group had matured him quickly. “I’m scared Shippo.” She whispered, averting her eyes to the cloth hanging to close off the entrance to the hut. “How will I get away from everyone? I don’t want to go alone. You have to come with me... You are the only one I trust with this.” She straightened her shoulders as a new sense of determination settled in her chest.
“Well, Miroku and Sango won’t question if you say you have to leave and figure some things out on your own, yes they will worry but in the end they will respect your decision. Inuyasha, well. I don’t know. It might be best to sneak away and conceal our scents so he can’t track us. Leave a note here for him to find, saying you will be back.” He was scratching the back of his head with a not so convinced look plastered on his innocent features when suddenly, a rather evil smirk passed over his lips and through his eyes. “Unless he thinks you went home…. You could put a barrier around the well under the pretense that your grandfather got sick and you have to go home and help out until he is better and won’t have him coming through and making a scene.”
When Kagome thought about it she figured it was worth a try. She had already proven the barriers would contain the hanyou so it could certainly keep him out of an area as well. They formed a plan and a spot to meet as she repacked supplies, she hated lying to everyone but this was more important. She had to know the truth. Shippo left the hut, smiling at her after kissing her cheek. “I will take care of everything. Get out of here as fast as you can. And don’t forget to mask your scent once you get to the well so he can’t figure anything out.” He was gone then and she was running, she was running as if Naraku was chasing her. She knew that when Inuyasha heard she was gone again he would be absolutely livid and come storming to the well to drag her back here.
She reached the well, her chest heaving and burning deep in her lungs. It took a few deep breaths to calm her energy enough to pull up the barrier and apply the proper sutras to keep in intact until she removed them. She didn’t want to risk anyone getting within three feet of it so she went the extra mile with the spells. She double checked the barrier and chanted softly, watching the pieces of paper with writing glow a bright pink before the orb solidified and she masked her scent. Step one was done. She felt the anger then, having used so much energy had her hypersensitive to her surroundings, he was coming. She took off into the forest, trying to be as quiet as she could until she found a tree she could climb easily with the large backpack on her back. No sooner than she got settled and hidden by leaves did Inuyasha burst into sight stalking towards the guarded well.
The group followed closely behind him on Kirara with Shippo shaking his head. She couldn’t hear them from this far away but she could tell the dog eared jerk was ranting and raving while Shippo and Miroku tried to calm him down. Sango looked like she was annoyed, but due to the distance Kagome couldn’t tell if she was a part of the conversation. Inuyasha punched the barrier and was sent flying several feet back, making her wince as smoke rose off his body. She hated doing this! He was up in a matter of blinks and rounding on Shippo, her heart stopped as she saw the fist flying once more but Shippo disappeared in a puff of smoke only to walk out of the tree line directly behind where he had been, she breathed a sigh of relief for kitsune trickery.
It took almost an hour for Inuyasha to give up and stalk back to the village, Miroku had tried to get through the barrier because Inuyasha had been pointing at the seals she had applied but even he was unable to get through it. She was worried for a moment but her barrier hadn’t failed her. One by one they left after small discussions then Shippo was heading towards her with a masked scent as well. “That was better than I thought it would be.” He said as she climbed down from her perch, having tossed her bag to him.
“It looked really bad.” She bit her lip, “Are we sure about this…” she began to fiddle with her fingers, “I mean, is it worth it?” Shippo hugged her, telling her she had to know which had her nodding and slipping the bag back on her back. “Thank you Shippo… for everything. For coming, For lying to everyone for me. For helping me. For understanding.”
“Don’t worry about it momma.” He nudged her shoulder with his own, earning a smile. “Which way did Akihiko go?”
She shrugged, “I don’t know. I literally turned away from him for a second and he was just gone.” She sighed, “Damn Inuyoukais.”
“That’s no way to talk about your older brother ‘Gome.” His voice caught the pair off guard and had her spinning around with holy energy lacing her fingers while Shippo growled. She pulled her power back and placed a hand on her son’s shoulder.
“Don’t do that!” She glared, watching him smile as he walked towards them. He had changed clothes while she was deciding, now he was wearing black hakamas with a montsuki kimono the color of his eyes below a hoari that was also black, she blinked at his new appearance, taking in how the color on his clothing barely showed with the way he was wearing the traditional clothing to be tied off with a caramel obi. It was odd seeing him dressed like this when she had seen him in future fashions.
“Why not? Your energy won’t hurt me. I used to startle you all the time and you loved it afterwards.” He looked from her to the adolescent Kitsune at her side with question. “And did I hear him say ‘Momma’? As far as I can tell you are untouched and couldn’t have birthed a child.” He blinked those caramel eyes in question.
“She took me in after my parents were killed by the Thunder Brothers.” Shippo had straightened his back, sizing up the stranger and instantly seeing the similarities; he thought that perhaps he was telling the truth after all. He looked to Kagome seeing the intense blush on her cheeks which made him chuckle slightly.
“So much like Midoriko. She treated me as if I came from her body just as you did.” He had a distant look for a moment before bringing himself back from the memories. “So you decided to leave, what changed your mind?” Kagome glanced to Shippo and then back to him, not really knowing how to explain it.
“I see. Thank you.” He was now standing right in front of them, his shoulders tense. “I guess we can begin the process then.” His fingers reached out to touch Kagome’s forehead but Shippo stopped him in a move so fast she couldn’t see it.
“Will it hurt her?” his voice was stern, full of warning yet curiosity.
“Yes.” Was all Akihiko said sadly before he forced the grip on his wrist to release him and pressed his fingers to her skin in the center of her forehead. The moment he did a silver circle appeared similar to his own on her skin though it had a small line in the top, bottom, and both sides of it that was red, almost as if the full moon was sitting on top of a cross. She was falling instantly, her body racked with pain beyond anything she had felt before. A silent scream left her lips, her pupils dilating then shrinking repeatedly as she was cradled in Akihiko’s arms in an attempt to control the convulsions.
Shippo fought the urge to rip his mother away from the male, instantly wanting nothing more than to rip him to pieces as he watched helplessly. He knew he couldn’t help, he knew this had to be done, he knew that if they weren’t careful Inuyasha would her them. “We need to move or we might be found.” He spoke as if he were being strangled, but he knew that after it was over Kagome couldn’t handle the hanyou and he feared that if he did appear before this was over he would risk his mother in ways that only Akihiko could handle. He was at the mercy of the Inuyoukai who had appeared in the future.
A brief nod had the male up and walking with a struggling female in his arms, it was obvious that at moments it was difficult for him to keep her in his arms, but he didn’t falter in his steps as Shippo fell in behind him. Kagome would calm only to arch violently a breath later, her body was hot to the touch and the holy powers swirling beneath the surface made the kitsune hang back slightly in fear of accidental purification, he stared in awe as her new found brother carried her without fear of death; further providing proof for the demon.
The woman was oblivious to her surroundings. All she could remember was the word ‘yes’ then she felt like her body was bursting. Every vein she had seemed to be rupturing in her body, every white blood cell was attacking her body as if it were a foreign entity. The only way her mind could cope with it was to accept that her blood had become volcanic and there was absolutely no stopping the progression as it filled her body with a heat so intolerable she could barely hold onto her own life. She would have happily slipped into death to escape this feeling. As if things couldn’t get worse, the heat was accompanied by a cold so deep she felt like if she moved her bones they would shatter then work their way out of her skin tiny sliver by sliver. How could two polar opposites exist in one tiny woman?! Breathing became impossible for Kagome as the next sensation rippled through her muscles. Every muscle she had worked so hard to perfect over the years of traveling felt like they were being peeled away layer by ungodly layer.
Her last resort before she screamed had been to lock herself away in her mind. So Kagome did just that, she hurled her consciousness into the depths of her inner musing and found a hint of peace, just barely enough to hold onto her sanity really, even though the pain was still there. Was this what it felt like to die? Had she been naïve and trusted an enemy? Perhaps this was her end and she had walked into it like a blundering blind buffoon. Every second felt like a day, a very long day while in the peak of a menstrual cycle where you were forced to run the entire day despite cramps bad enough to be considered labor.
Memories filtered through her mind, something to hold on to tightly to distract herself. Though there were a few she couldn’t understand because to her knowledge they had never happened. The young voice calling out “ ‘Gome “ followed closely by what she assumed was a small child’s giggles. A soft humming that led into singing by the voice of an angel. The growls of comfort she could understand fully as a heartbeat lulled her to sleep. Screams. Terrible screams, the kind of screams horror movies were inspired by and kept people awake at night for years if they heard them. She could see blood, she could feel the holy powers and a blinding magenta burst of light. She felt her body being injured as a young child, she could see tears in a young set of caramel eyes. She watched as her mother solidified with a demon trying to devour her. The soft pulses from a tiny pinkish purple ball rolled towards her and before she could touch it the growls and whispers surrounded her and she was being whisked away. She could still feel her mother, even though she knew she was gone, it was like Midoriko had saved her last bit of strength to fulfill her final wish. The well. She could see the well as if she were falling down it and she was screaming, reaching for Akihiko. Aiko was her next memory, a startled young Aiko that was holding her arms out to the young girl. Growls and whispers, a touch to her forehead, and then nothing. Her life was human in memories after that touch.
Shadows danced over her closed eyes, she could see the waves of darkness balancing with the press of yellow through her closed lids. What was all of that? A groan left her mind, but not her body. “When will she wake up Akihiko?” she could feel a soft touch from the backs of fingers, they were moving her hair. Shippo! She hadn’t died!
“I do not know.” His voice sounded distant, filled with worry. She wanted to hug him suddenly and the urge overwhelmed her. She paused in thought, why would she want to hug a stranger. “Because he is our brother.” Her mind stopped thinking; that had to of been her own thoughts. “No. You know what I am Kagome. Think priestess” She wanted to run away now, perhaps the pain had truly driven her mad. “You cannot run from that which is a part of you.”
“STOP!” Her voice came out as a scream, her body that had been idle was now jerking itself into an upright position and she was blinking, everything being in such vibrant detail it overwhelmed her. She could smell something metallic in the air and she looked around very slowly, trying to cope with her situation. Shippo lay a few paces away, sitting up with a hand to his cheek. He was bleeding and staring at her wide eyed. “Shippo? What happened?” her voice was normal but her heart was racing, she could actually hear it but dismissed it as adrenaline for the moment.
“You did momma.” He whispered, not wanting to upset her but after what had just happened he dared not lie to her. “You flung your arm out as if you were trying to get someone away from you and the next thing I knew my cheek was bleeding and I was pushed out of reach of you. You didn’t touch me though, it was almost like an invisible whip lashed out at me before a barrier shoved me away.” He whispered in awe, though fear for his mother was evident in his eyes as he turned his gaze to her brother. “What’s happening to my mother?”
She was crying silently as she took in his words. She had hurt her son in her sleep. Akihiko was right, it was a good thing she had left her friends if this was just the beginning. “Hiko…” she was so lost in that moment that she didn’t register she had used his old name that only she had called him, but he did.
“Do not worry ‘Gome. This is normal. You are supposed to be like this. Panicking will only make it worse. You have no idea how to control yourself and honestly the abilities you have are unheard of. You are the first of your kind.” He had been cautiously approaching the woman who was crying, a very well hidden lump building in his throat. Midoriko had explained that Kagome would be unique in many ways since she was born from a powerful Inuyoukai and a priestess as strong as herself, she wouldn’t be a hanyou like most children born of the two species but instead she’d be a demon in ways that no one could ever hope to predict; but when she was born the plan had been to raise her among her family so they could help her learn to control herself, not have everything thrown to the wind as it had been. “Just calm down. You have to be calm.”
When he reached for her she flinched, “NO! Don’t touch me!” she was scooting away from the males now. “I don’t want to hurt you!” with her outcry and racing heart things began to tumble into chaos. The dirt around them was starting to rumble and churn as if snakes were slithering underneath the trio, Shippo was wide eyed and on his feet while Akihiko backed away with a quick jump. She was panicking. She had hurt her son. She was insanely terrified due to the voice she had been hearing in her head. She couldn’t make sense of the memories. And now Akihiko was saying her lashing out had been normal. This Was Not Normal!
“Stop it Kagome!” her heart skipped a beat. “You are going to kill them!”
“Leave me alone!” she buried her face in her hands, fighting the headache that was beginning to split her body in two.
“Calm down! Do you want our son to die!?” She could hear a snarl and only once she processed the words did she realize it had been her making the noise no human throat should make. Shippo and Akihiko, on the other hand, had heard the very animalistic noise coming from the woman huddled in on herself.
‘What do you mean OUR?! Who are you!?’ Kagome was thinking to herself as she rocked in place with two helpless males as far away from her as they could get. The ground had be become as loose as graveyard soil after a burial and with each tremble and shift of soil streaks of holy power the color of lavender could be seen shooting out beneath it.
“Shippo. Leave. If that power comes to the surface it will purify you.” Akihiko hissed to the kitsune, never taking his eyes off his younger sister who was now surrounded by her own hair being tossed about by the magnitude of her energy in the moment. When Shippo ignored him he had to grip his upper arm tightly to make him look at him, “If you die, how do you think Kagome will feel!? She will blame herself forever and she will surely be alive a great deal of time! NOW LEAVE!”
The kitsune widened his eyes. So it was true, his mother would live for a long time now, he tore his eyes from the barely hidden panic in the caramel orbs to stare at his mother. “Momma! Stop!” He screamed to her, feeling Akihiko’s claws slowly begin to bury themselves into his bicep. He didn’t want to leave her, he had been training so he could protect her, but how could he protect her from herself without getting himself killed?
“Listen! Our son is calling out to us! If you do not calm yourself you will explode, leaving nothing but ash in your wake. You will wake up and find everything within a mile of you is destroyed. The powers may be holy and destroy demons, but they are also demonic and will destroy any form of life in such an uncontrolled release! Calm. Down.’ The voice made sense and Kagome tried her best to reel herself in.
‘What’s happening to me?’ she thought to herself, having realized she could communicate with the source of her fear. ‘Who are you?’
Kagome heard a sigh in her mind, “I am your inner beast Kagome. All demons have them, be it full blood of half blood. If you have a drop of demon blood in your veins you have an inner beast. You have been told our father is a demon, an Inuyokai. I am you. You are me. We are one. Do not fear me! Calm yourself!” The voice was obviously annoyed with her and it began to stir her anger, which was worse than panic.
‘I just found out all of this shit! How else am I going to react!? You’re making this worse! Just leave me the hell alone!’ Kagome was officially insane, she was arguing with herself and the whisper of her human heart told her that was ridiculous which infuriated her more. With this angered frenzy came the power behind it. The holy streaks of power laced with demonic undertones that had been spider webbing below the dirt began to break through by sending random beams into the sky like lasers at a rave.
Akihiko shoved Shippo out of the way as soon as he felt the energy shift and was literally dragging the struggling adolescent away from the woman battling with herself. Even he couldn’t risk being struck by this form of raw energy because to it no one was a friend. He could feel the trickles of her beast lying in wait just below the surface and he realized a very important detail only another Inu would understand. She was gaining a beast and form. “Shippo. You can’t help her. She is changing. The only way you can help is by staying safe and out of the way. She will need you after all of this is over. She now has an inner beast like me, like Inuyasha, like Sesshomaru. She must come to terms with this or she will die.”
“Dammit Akihiko!” Shippo still faught him, but knew he was right. “KAGOME! Snap out of it momma!” He was crying, the feeling of utter helplessness sinking into his gut.
The smell of salt hit Kagome’s nose and she jerked her head up in search of her son. She had recognized it because it was a softer version of his blood though it seemed to reek of turmoil and desperation. She saw Akihiko holding him back yards away from her, confusion blossomed in her soul at why her brother would keep her child restrained from her until she noticed the beams of power surging from the ground only to fall back somewhere else like lightning. Akihiko wasn’t looking at her, he was staring up and then back to the ground; cautious and protecting the thing that mattered the most to her in the whole world, Shippo. ”You see. Calm down or you will kill them and yourself. Breathe. Everything will be explained. Breathe.” She obeyed this time, focusing on her heartbeat to slow it down as she did before meditating.
‘Help me.’ She pleaded to the beast within her. She could feel warmth then, like someone was hugging her tightly and her mind stilled. The power began to recede back into her form, the strikes that had been happening every few seconds now stretching out to be fewer and fewer until the ground all together stopped moving and settled into the loose dirt. Shippo took the moment to use fox magic to get away from Akihiko, leaving the stunned Inu with stinging eyes and a scent blind nose as smoke cleared away. He watched as the young demon flung himself at Kagome as she wrapped her arms around him and began to sob. ‘Thank you.’ She whispered to her beast.
“You’re welcome.” Was whispered in her mind before she felt the presence slipping back into the depths of her soul for the time being. She was mumbling apologies now, sobbing and shaking. Akihiko took his time reaching the pair before he sat down next to them.
“You met her, didn’t you?” he was smiling, even though he had been on the verge of dying multiple times.
