Much of the day seemed to pass quickly, Kagome coming and going from the small cave, Sesshomaru either not noticing or not caring. She spent the day gathering what wild herbs she could, and later in the evening she managed to snag another hare, though that was it for the day’s hunting. All things considered the day had gone well, and while neither her nor Sesshomaru had spoken more than a handful of words to each other after the morning’s conversation, the company was a pleasant reprieve from the monotony of solitude. It wasn’t until the sun had set that Kagome even looked up at the Daiyoukai, her eyes studying him across from her in the firelight. He appeared to be resting, his eyes hooded close as his head leaned back against the wall of the cave, however appearances were deceptive, and she knew somewhere deep inside of her that he would notice everything she did.
“I do not foresee the need to for the Miko to be within the depths of battle, she would be safer on the edges” the impetious demon drawled on, his eyes steady on his younger half brother. Kagome bristled at the implications, her hands tightening into fists at her sides, and even though she sat a good six feet from him and across their campfire.
“She has to be close enough to purify the jewel ya bastard” Inuyasha spat out, his eyes narrowing angrily and his clawed hands gripping the hilt of the Tenseiga.
“She can speak for herself” she snapped, standing to her feet and brushing off her skirt. “Inuyasha is right, I have to be close enough to pull the jewel and purify it, else anyone is susceptible to it’s, charm,” she stated matter of factly, her eyes boring into Sesshomaru’s. The impeccable youkai across from her seem nonplussed, his eyes looking into hers as if she were a mere insect who dared open her mouth. She supposed she was at that, seeing as how he could easily kill her without much thought, and she would have to work to even leave a singe mark on him, yet she still stood her ground.
“Hn, however this Sesshomaru will not be your guard dog” he said matter of factly, as if he expected any different. She merely waved in acceptance and sat back down, tending to the noodles over the fire. One of these days she would have to get Inuyasha to eat something more than ramen, but since everyone was on edge from the nearing battle, she let him pick the food to keep the peace. No one else seemed to mind, as their minds were elsewhere. Her eyes traveled to Sango, her adoptive sister so to speak, and she knew that her mind was on her younger brother Kohaku, and what the completion of the jewel would mean for him. They had discussed it in length amongst their small pack, both the pros and cons of Kohaku keeping the shards. However it had been Sango who spoke up, and simply stated that he deserved to be at rest, fully at rest, and not a walking shell like he was. Shippo sat leaning against her side, his foxfire dancing between his fingertips, as if he could feel the anxious tension in the group but didn’t want to focus on it, instead playing with toys like a child.
Kagome did not like the nervous tension that brewed between them, yet she was unable to rectify it in any way, and instead left everyone to their own devices. Later in the night, when everyone was asleep, Inuyasha would join her bedroll, holding her tight with his nose buried in her hair. They never did anything except hold each other, as if that was the sole source of comfort they had. She dreamed easier when he was close, and he slept when he had her in his arms. The defeat of Naraku meant a future for them, a whole and complete future, without some crazy quest or barriers between them, and like two young lovers they clung to that desperate future with everything they had, because to them, that was everything.
“He never mated you” came Sesshomaru’s quiet voice, his wrist resting on his knee.
“No” she retorted just as quietly, eating her dinner across the fire from him.
“Why not” he asked simply, as if he had asked her what she was eating. His questions were very out of character for him, and it made her leary, yet she found herself answering just for the conversation, and to talk to another living, sane, being.
“We were waiting til after the defeat of Naraku, it was something to look forward to.” His silence seemed out of character, and when she looked up at him, he was gazing back at her with an unreadable expression. “Why do you ask?”
“I had assumed he had taken you sometime after the battle, yet your scent proves he did not, it was a mere curiosity” he stated simply, shrugging his shoulders and leaning his head back. Kagome frowned and turned her head back to the fire, letting her thoughts wander at that time, her eyes dulling as her memories played themselves out.
The sound of silence rang over the battlefield as Naraku’s shriek faded from the party’s ears. It was done, truly done, and his incarnations were dying along with him. Miroku raised a shaky hand to his face, slowly unwinding the prayer beads that circled his wrist and palm. With a strangled cry, he pulled down the fabric to reveal one whole hand, the curse finally gone and broken. Sang was next to Kohaku, and though he was silent, she gently caressed his cheek, as if she knew these would be his last moments. Kagome stood shaking next to Inuyasha, her arms trembling with exhaustion as she stared at the carnage around them, tears forming at her eyes as she came to the same conclusion as everyone else, it was over, it was finally over. With more calm than she felt, she walked over to the spider hanyou’s remains, her body standing shoulder to shoulder with a blood flecked Sesshomaru. Reaching down, she picked up a mostly completed jewel, focusing what energy she had left and purifying it back to its original pink. Slowly rolling it between her fingers, she began placing the shards that she held back into its form, realizing now that only three left missing, and with a sad smile, she turned to do what needed doing.
“You fought well Miko” came the soft voice of Sesshomaru, his eyes not staring at her but at the tracks of dirt left behind by the wind scar, his head tilting in a slight nod towards her. She nodded back, thanking him in a small way as he turned to take his leave. She didn’t know that it would be the last time she saw him in his time, and had she, she wasn’t sure what she would have done differently. She watched him go, steeling herself against the fatigue that threatened to overtake her as she walked slowly towards Sango and Kohaku.
“Sango, it’s time” she said softly, placing a soft hand on the taijiya’s shoulder. The young fighter nodded, and stood up quickly, backing off as she held a hand over her nose and mouth. The dulled eyes of Kohaku gazed lifelessly up at Kagome, as if he had forgotten how to be human with Naraku’s death. Placing a soft kiss on the boy’s forehead, she pulled him forward to where his back was exposed, and with a deft single movement, plucked the tainted shard from his back, purifying it with her touch. Leaning him back against the tree, she watched as his eyes closed, and his chest stopped moving, his body turning back into the graveyard soil he was made from. Sango let out a gut wrenching sob at that point, falling to her knees and hugging herself as she mourned the loss of her brother a second time. It wasn’t until Kagome had her arms around the young woman, her own eyes leaking tears that slowly she started to calm down, her grieving bubbling up to the surface and fading away after so many years. It would take years to heal from this, and even though they were almost done, Kagome could feel the pain of the group begin to lessen. Kouga was their last matter to attend to, but they could wait a few more days to recover from their ordeal.
“Why did you not take a mate? Surely a Daiyoukai like yourself must have had many potential suitors.” Her question had caught her own self off guard, her eyes jerking up to look at his in the firelight.
“I never found a youkai suitable enough,” he murmured simply, his voice carrying a tinge of annoyance as if he found her question tiring.
“What does that even mean to you? That you couldn’t find a woman you were compatible with, you couldn’t find a woman who met your class standards, or you couldn’t find a woman to put up with you?” Kagome’s voice carried more than a hint of anger, she was more than irritated that he couldn’t seem to give her any good answers while he would probe her for her most intimate secrets.
“It means that there was neither a woman of breeding nor personality that I cared to tie myself to.” His voice cut through her fog, as if that was his answer the first time. Her internal rant was cut off mid sentence, her eyes lowering to her hands again.
“Weren’t you lonely?” she whispered, her heart aching at the thought of being alone for five centuries, never sharing it with anyone.
“I had, companions, throughout the years, just none I cared to mate.”
“Oh, I see...OH, oh I understand” she stammered, her cheeks reddening at the thought of well, that. Mentally she scolded her body’s reaction, twenty five years old and blushing like a high school girl seeing a naked body for the first time.
“I doubt it, as you yourself have never taken a companion” he drawled, earning a deeper blush from her cheeks. “I do have my curiosities as to why, though I can make an educated guess.” At this her cheeks burned with anger, her eyes glaring at him as she rose to her feet. “Let us see, you hoped that the well would re-open for you, and yet when it didn’t you were forced with the realization that Inuyasha wasn’t coming for you, and that he didn’t survive to this time either, yet you couldn’t find a man to measure to his standards. Am I correct?”
“Partially” she snapped out, her fury rolling off her in waves as she balled her fists at her side. She hoped he would say another word, ignite her anger further so she would have a reason to react, but she knew he wouldn’t as he opened one golden eye and stared across the fire to her shaking form.
“Partially?” he intoned, watching her body shake from withheld anger, at this point he was merely amused, riling the young miko up provided him with a form of entertainment he didn’t normally get.
“That is what I said Sesshomaru-Sama, and since we have an early start, I think that is the end of this conversation, I am going to bed” she stated, her fists still balled up at her sides as she stalked away from the infuriating youkai. With more anger than she meant to, she laid out her bedroll and climbed inside of it, turning her back to the fire and therefore the smug inu, and closed her eyes. It would be a while before she fell asleep though, her mind turning his question over and over again in her head. It was not as if she couldn’t have had partners, and it wasn’t like her heart yearned and ached for Inuyasha in a way that refused to accept he was gone, rather the opposite. She mourned for him, and accepted the loss in her life, yet she found she didn’t crave another. How could a man live up to a half-demon? How could she let her now mundane little life be her only salvation when she lived a life full of adventure and danger, the excitement at every turn? No man compared, and she found herself unwilling to settle for anything less than what she had, and she wasn’t getting it again, which left her eternally single. That wasn’t to say that she didn’t crave the touch of another, but rather she did not wish to waste time with just physical urges, instead relying on toys and herself to satisfy the more carnal side of her life. However Sesshomaru wasn’t going to get any of this information, it was none of his damn business as far as she was concerned!
The inuyoukai in question seemed to study the angry little onna, his eyes slitted as he gazed at her slowly relaxing form over the fire. He had his own theories as to why she had not taken another, yet what surprised himself was how much his curiosity had peaked. Throughout his long life he had striven for separation of the humans, to be a part of their world without actually touching the filth inside of it. He had hated the world had turned out, the way his kind had bred themselves into oblivion and let themselves die out as a result. Most historians would deem it as unstoppable, but he still found himself with a severe distaste in his mouth when it came to these fragile little beings. Except for this little Miko. She was someone from his past, who understood the world he belonged to, the rightful hierarchy of the world. She didn’t fear what he was, she respected his strength, while at the same time challenging his authority. He wasn’t sure if it was familiarity or stupidity that prompted these actions, yet he found himself enjoying her presence none the less.
Slowly and silently, he stood up, stretching his muscles as he headed towards the entrance to the cave, her barrier slightly stinging his flesh. With much reluctance he admitted to himself that her barriers weren’t to be taken lightly, and that had he not grown in power as he aged he would not have been able to pass so easily. Filling his lungs with the nighttime air, he breathed in with controlled grace, filling his lungs with the crisp mountain air. The only good to come of this nightmare was there was no more pollution, and the air that filled his lungs only served to remind him of a better time, back when said humans feared the very sight of his visage. His urge to hunt grew from the need to move, and with ease he sped off into the woods, tracing the scent of a very frightened doe, her strong legs propelling her body away from him. Her fear was palpable, an almost touchable essence to him, his eyes tinging with red from the excitement of the hunt.
It was over in minutes, his clawed fingers soaked in warm blood, the last spasms of her hind legs only remnants of her previous strength, her wide brown eyes glazing over in death. Sesshomaru did not feel the satisfaction he was hoping to, instead turning to gorge himself on his freshly caught meal. Truly he was just as affected as those poor souls down there in the city, his inner beast screaming to mate and kill, sometimes both, and only excursions like these held himself at bay, but he would never reveal such weakness to the onna. Instead he forced himself to hunt and eat, the other urges would have to wait til this ended, and there was a world to go back to. Slowly, as he was finishing his meal, the tall daiyoukai stood fully, blood coating his normally serene features as he gazed up through the branches to the beautiful light of the moon. Taking deep breaths he forced himself to calm down, the blood dripping from his chin to the ground below, his eyes slowly returning to their normal golden gaze. Forcing his breathing to even, he took slow strides away from his kill, towards a nearby stream to bathe his face and hands, his steps measure and even, neither hurried nor slow, once again returning to the killing perfection in which he was named.
The water was cool and soothing against his skin, washing away the evidence of his kill, the evidence of his weakness, the tainted water flowing quickly down the mountain to be lost to him forever. His legs carried him once more back to the cave, his belly and beast satisfied for the time being, his mind clear enough for the next week or so of travel. It would be harder and harder to hide these excursions from the Miko, but he would cross that bridge when he came to it, if he came to it. Once he passed through the barrier, he settled back into his normal spot, his eyes closing and sleep overtaking his form.
