The bed was warm but felt a little different than usual as Kagome slowly awoke. She lay with her head on his bare chest, his heart beat was soothing enough to almost lull her back to sleep. His arm was around her and he was idly drawing little patterns on her back, his other hand holding hers. She hummed contentedly as her eyes slowly focused on the hand. Something was off but her sleep addled brain couldn't place it.
“Finally awake?”The voice that rumbled in the chest below her wasn't the one she was expecting.
She froze. “K-koga?” Her stuttered exclamation wasn't loud but it was an octave higher than normal.
He stroked her hair gently and kissed the top of her head. Humming in confirmation.
“What am I- What are you- I- What?!” Kagome panicked, pulled away and sat up.
Koga sat up with her holding her gently but firmly. “Stop stop, it's alright. Breath first. Then think.” Koga's voice was soothing. It wasn't a tone that she had heard from him often.
She did breath, and then her memories of the night before came back. She seemed to deflate in his arms. “Oh. Right.”
He put both his arms around her rubbing her back and leaning his cheek against her head.
One arm found its way around his shoulders while the other mostly covered her face, alternating between a fist, a flat hand, and wiping her tears as she cried against his chest. The small voice that tried to rationalize the whole situation, tell Kagome that she was being an idiot and should be embarrassed at her rash action was drowned by the one calling Inuyasha far worse than idiot, and a third voice the affirmed that she was better off without someone who didn't want her no matter how much she loved him. What she wanted was Ice cream, sappy movies, and her friends, so she took the comfort Koga offered. After a while she quieted again. She realized her position all over again. Crying into another man's, her friend's, chest. His bare chest. His bare chest she had been using as a pillow. A man who had not been shy about telling her how much he loved her in the past, first it hadn't been for her as a person but her other attributes. Not many women had her ability to sense the sacred jewel. He eventually grew to love her for more than that though and had no qualms telling her. He had stopped after he and Ayame had actually gotten close but he did come to her as a friend after that to talk, for advice, and, she thought, for comfort after he and Ayame had split. “I'm alright now, Koga.” Her voice was quiet but she knew he heard.
He loosened his hold on her and looked into her face. His dark eyes searched hers and gently touching the trails of her tears with the backs of his fingers. “You're strong Kagome.”
Kagome's heart gave a little pang as she looked into his blue eyes. She went to look away, to deny it, she didn't feel strong. He held her cheek gentle so she couldn't turn away easily. His gentle caressing made it so she really didn't want to. What am I thinking? I can't... Can't what? Betray the man who already told me to leave?
“I love you for that you know? I love your strength but also when you rely on me.” He took her hand and kissed her palm and gave her a sideways smile.
“Koga... I...” Kagome wondered what kind of a face she was making. “I need to go help Rin with the others.”
“I've heard of that place it's not somewhere you should go. It's fine for most humans but not priestesses. Sango, Miroku, and Rin will be fine. I promise.” He lifted her chin so she'd look at him again, stroking her cheek with her thumb. “Besides, I've got a surprise for you.”
Not long later they were outside. Kagome wore the same sturdy priestess garb she usually wore while Koga surprised Kagome. He wore a hit of a kimono-like jacket and loose but tied in at the bottom. She and Sango had given him last year, though it might have been Kagome's idea. The base colours of the jacket were indigo and dark grey with little moons here and there, the pants were dark grey. She had to admit, it looked good on him. Stop it.
Koga approached the rock she was sitting on, stopped, and leaned in. He sniffed along her neck then moving back about a foot sniffed down her body to her ankle. Her heart jumped. She was feeling even more aware of Koga then she had before. “K-Koga?”
“Kagome, there's a new odd scent on you. Not bad, just different. Green...” He sniffed deeply again. “I smelled it last night too but it's stronger again. Fresher...” He stopped near her bad ankle and stopped before straightening back up and picking her up again.
“It- It could be the herbal salve I'm using on my ankle.” She offered.
“What's in that salve? It smells familiar but I can't place it.” He looked pensive as if something bothered him.
She named off a few ingredients, “The main herb is one I only learned about recently, I don't know the name of it but a healer in another village swears by it and it's smell is weaker and more pleasant than some others I'm used to. If I see some I'll point it out.” She adopted a public service announcement or tv teacher tone “Though if you use it, don't forget to wash your hands, it is not edible.”
Koga sniffed again, “Please.” He had started walking and worked up an easy run with her in his arms again. Kagome held a bundle in her arms. She was given express instructions not to peak. Her curiosity grew. If the bundle shifted slightly and she saw in that wasn't really peaking was it? While she repositioned herself and her load slightly in his arms, her ear and the side of her neck grew warm. Koga was breathing almost into her ear.
He came to a river and paused to run his nose up her neck and to her ear.“If you peak, I will kiss you, and I'm not sure I could stop there.” He nipped her ear lightly as well as a familiar feeling spot on her neck causing her to gasp.
“Mm” She stiffed a sound. “K-koga... That's... I...” She wasn't sure what she wanted to say. Had he given her a hickey there last night or was that a dream? She knew all she had dreamt hadn't happened but... She could feel her cheeks heating and knew she was blushing.
He chuckled against her neck. The feel of it sent shivers and she didn't find them unpleasant, she also knew if she asked Koga to stop, pushed him away or did anything to stop him he'd stop. There was a little thrill in what he said that she wanted to deny though and then there was the thought... But what if I don't stop him...
“But if you really want to go ahead and look.” He spoke against her neck and then licked where he had nipped.
She inhaled sharply again. “You'd like that!” She knew her retort was juvenile and not what she had intended. Her voice was also less even than she wanted.
He laughed as he started running in full. The wind drowning out his reply. “More than you could know.”

Shippou sighed gustily as he wondered how deep a path Inuyasha would carve with his pacing. “Finally...” Inuyasha stopped and sniffed the air and echoed Shippou
A few minuites later Kirara set down with Sango.
“Well?” was Inuyasha's impatient greeting.
Miroku glared at Inuyasha's rudeness, Sango shook her head.
Sango sighed. “I have an idea of where she is but you won't like it.”
“Well?” He was curt but they knew it was out of concern. Kagome had been gone since late the night before and Kirara needed rest before they even thought to ask her to take them to Kagome.
Miroku stopped Sango before she said anything more. “Not until you tell us what's going on and why she left.”
Inuyasha glared. “Just tell me.”
“No.” Miroku stood firm.
It might have gone back and forth between him for a while but Sango silently put a hand on both their arms. “I know you're worried about her Inuyasha but so are we. She's like family to us.”
“Yea!” Shippou piped in, glowering. He hadn't found out until the morning that Kagome had left. His glower was less impressive than Shippou would have liked. He was still a couple feet shorter than Inuyasha, even with how much he had grown.
“...fine” Inuyasha lost the fight in his eyes. He plopped down in front of a nearby tree. “You knew I came back yesterday from a mission? Alright, well, I came back early because of something I heard along the way. An old witch I met told me my fortune. I shouldn't have helped the hag but whatever, she told me my fortune to 'repay' me or something. I didn't pay much attention at the time. I've seen you scam people with your fake fortunes too much.” He looked at Miroku who looked back indignant. Sango elbowed him when he went to protest. “Anyway she said she'd tell me 3 true things to prove that she told the truth.” He paused again. “She told me I'd have 4 visitors shortly after I arrived home, one would be with child, and the woman I care for will be injured and unable to walk easily.”
Sango and Miroku turned red and look at each other and to Songo's abdomen.
“But I'm not...” “She's not...” They spoke at once and looked at each other again.
“I'm talking about Kirara.” Inuyasha corrected and sniffed.
“O-oh I didn't realize you could tell that.” Sango looked somewhere between disappointed and slightly embarrassed.
Miroku cleared his throat.
“So what did she say that made you drive Kagome away.” Shippo asked bluntly.
“Listen you.” Inuyasha growled and then lost his fire again and sighed. “ 'If the woman you love bears your child, will lose her.' ”
They were all silent for a few minutes before Miroku asked what the others wanted to know “Is Kagome...?”
“No. I don't think so but she has been, she got sick and lost the child. I don't even think she knew...” Inuyasha looked more sad than any had seen him. “If she goes back to her own time she'd be safer, the 'medical care' they have there... I don't want Kagome to suffer just because she's with me.” He wasn't looking at any of them now. He looked at the ground and then the forest again. “There is a way. I know she didn't believe me but there is. I might even be able to go with her... if she wanted that.”
“Inuyasha...” Sango patted his arm sympathetically.
“Now will you tell me where you think she is? Please?” His 'please' was less begging and more of an impatient, sarcastic demand.
It was Sango's turn to sigh. “We've checked with most of our more local friends. The only place Kirara wouldn't bring me was to Koga so I think she might be with Koga.”
Emotions raced across his face, surprisingly relief was first, then anger, sadness, relief again.
“Inuyasha... have you ever heard that sometimes a man meets his fate on the path he takes to avoid it?” Miroku had read that in one of Kagome's school books.
Inuyasha got up, ignoring the monk, “We have to go get Rin.” Feeling like part of him was turning to frozen lead, he ran away from Kagome and towards the island. He might have already lost her, but if she was safe could he truly complain about how that happened? As much as he disliked Koga's attentions on Kagome in the past, Inuyasha knew that she was as safe as she could be with him. Koga had also toned down his declarations and attentions towards Kagome since he married Ayame. Let her have her space and hate him for now. It hurt but it was safer for her. It would take him some time to arrange the way for her to go home to her own time.

It was a beautiful day. The sun was warm and the flowers, trees emitted pleasant smells as they passed, and the best part was the feel of the woman he loved in his arms as he ran. She leaned into him resting her head on his chest. She must still be tired. The little sleep she did get seemed fitful. He knew she was hurting right now, physically and emotionally, thanks to that stupid Muttface but he would do his best to heal her heart. He hadn't tried to get Kagome back again after Ayame. She seemed so happy with that Muttface. Now she had come to him and he would show her how happy she would be with him.
He stopped on a small clearing with a breathtaking view of the river valley and surrounding land. “What do you think?” His lips moved against the outer edge of her ear while she was distracted by the landscape.
She inhaled sharply and jumped slightly at the contact.
He chuckled at her and looked out over the view as well. She didn't try to get down or away from him earlier or now, and he took that as a good sign. He also knew she was the type who would speak out if something bothered her. “Well?”
“It's beautiful.” She hoped he mistook the waver in her voice as being winded from his speed, she doubted it though. What is wrong with me? Why I am getting so... caught up so easily? She didn't want to think 'aroused' or 'turned on', because she didn't want to admit that's what it was last night and today. She was aware of him all over again though she didn't want him to know that. His arms held her so securely while he ran, his chest was sturdy and pleasant to lean on. She knew he kept his gait as steady as possible so he wouldn't jostle her.
She shifted slightly and the bundle, that had been secure for the 25 min of his run, slipped. A bamboo drinking container peaked out.
“Kagome.” He was smirking at her again. His voice was playful and his eyes glinted.
She barely had time to think Uh-Oh before he dipped her. He dropped the hold he had under her knees and reached his arm around above them. Kagome grabbed fistfuls of the jacket tightly out of reflex. She let out all her air in a short surprised squeak of a scream.
Koga looked at Kagome his glinting eyes just inches from her own. “You peaked.” He closed the space between them slowly, his breath tickled her lips.
He's so close. Her heart was beating doubletime. From his quick movement or his proximity? Either way it was because of Koga. “K-koga...”
He flirted with her lips never actually touching. “You owe me a kiss Sweet.” His voice was slow and sensual and she almost closed her eyes before she pushed him back a little. He pulled back and she exhaled realizing how shallowly she had been breathing.
He straightened up, letting his arm slide up her lower body until she stood upright. She realized that he meant her to be more and more aware of him. She really wasn't sure she minded anywhere near as much as she should. Gods I'm confused...
From the bundle Koga had had Kagome carry he produced a modest and very well packed picnic. She could tell there was more in there but not what.
It didn't take Koga long to fashion a crutch for Kagome when she asked. She enjoyed watching him work with his hands and told him the story of how she hurt her ankle, purposely making it funnier. After, they chatted about nothing and everything. She told him about science, he told her more about nature and odd phenomenon of this time, she told him about teaching the children of the village, and he told her about training games with the youth from his tribe. She jokingly offered to make him a friendship bracelet and he, not joking, offered to massage salve into her ankle later.
“For now... I have another surprise.” He handed Kagome the bundle before quickly lifting her into his arms. He enjoyed how she almost seemed used to being carried by him now.
Minutes later they were at the edge of a hot spring. He set her on a large rock nearby and started pulling at strings on his jacket. Scenarios floated through her head. “Koga, I can't.. we can't...”
“Why not?” He approached her slowly, his jacket already hanging open. His eyes held that wicked glint again. His smirk in his over confident way.
“I don't know what you thought but I'm not getting in that hot spring with you!” She burst out face redder with every word.
“That's ok, you don't have to. You'll be missing out though.” He tuned slightly and reached for the straps on the bottom of the pants, bending over and emphasizing his runners butt.
No. No. Easy girl. Danger Will Robinson! … But he does have a very nice... No!
“Fine.” She pulled herself out of her thoughts that were spiraling nowhere good, or somewhere very good, depending on your opinion. I'm going to go look at herbs before we lose all of the sun.” It was already a bit too dark but she wasn't going to play into him more than she already had. She looked for the easiest way off her perch without hurting herself more.
“Kaaa-gooo- meee” His voice dragged out the syllables, sing-songy and wheedling. He came over placing a hand to either side of her.
His face only a foot from hers. If she wanted to she could just lean in and No!
“What's wrong?” His voice was still playful.
Oh! Like you don't know! So not fair. He just had something half similar to boxers on now. It was more than he normally wore really it just seemed different for some reason. “Nothing!” She took a breath and started again. “Nothing. I just don't want to get in … naked.” She talked primly and faltered at the end looking away from him.
“Now who said anything about 'naked'?” He pulled a folded thin kimono from behind his back. She guessed it was one of the ones kept in the hut for the sick.
“Oh...uh thanks.” Was she disappointed? She wondered at herself for her strange feelings. What is going on with me?
He helped her down off the rock, grinning. He still held her by the waist when he asked “Would you like help changing?” His fingers slowly slid to the end of the material from the bow on the front of her pants.
“N-no, I would not, thank you very much!” She puffed her cheeks slightly and tried to turn her back on him only to lose her balance again. Damn ankle!
He caught her, her back was flush against his chest and his arms around her. “Just tell me to stop or back off, you don't need to hurt yourself.” He nipped at her ear again. It wasn't the same one as last time. If there ever was tolerance built up it was gone now. “Though if you fall, or throw yourself at me,-
“Hey!”
“-I will always catch you.” He slid his nose down and back up her neck, and nipped lightly again. “Do you want me to leave you to change on your own?” His hand was back on the tie, his other wrapped all the way around her stomach. He tugged lightly, on the tie, slowly undoing the bow. There was another half knot under it but that wasn't much without the bow.
She sucked her breath in, her heart seemed to beat harder with ever small advance he made. She pleasantly shuddered at his movements. “Koga.. I-I...” Her voice was soft and wavered.
“What do you want Kagome? Should I stay or go? I can come back once you're changed.” He continued to slowly pull the tie until it let go. He heard her gasp but not protest or give permission he was at his wits end, he wanted her to be his. “I” He dragged his teeth down her neck slightly from her ear “am going to” He nipped her neck “ wait nearby” He sucked slightly on the same spot he had made his mark on her the night before “while you change.” His arm around her loosened, playing in the space between her breasts and the top of the pants.
Kagome tried not to make the sounds that were trying to escape with each new sensation from Koga.
“Don't... Don't go yet.” She spoke softly so she wouldn't sound as breathless or pleading as she felt. She held the hand that almost slipped off her middle.
“Alright” He came back, surprised but happy. He tucked 1 hand into the half knot of the tie on her pants, rubbing his thumb along the material just above it, his other hand touched her chin and gently guided it towards himself. Her hands rested on his forearm and elbow. He looked her in the eyes close enough to kiss her. Slowly he closed the distance, and his eyes, breathing her name. “Kagome...”
