When Kagome couldn’t fight her yawn anymore she blushed, even though it wasn’t able to be seen with just the seemingly small glow of her flashlights in the unlimited depths of darkness her friend was leading her down. She focused on remembering that it was a tunnel, not a dead end and when that didn’t work she told herself it was better than flying. With no light beyond what they made it was impossible to tell just how long they had been walking, all she knew was that she was exhausted but terrified to sleep so she didn’t ask Miroku to stop even though her calves burned and her feet were numb from the whole days experience.
Her yawns didn’t go unnoticed by the monk and he almost said that he was tired himself because he knew she needed rest, but even though he was indeed tired he also knew that he could walk longer if she wanted to. He had a feeling why she didn’t want to stop and it made him sad, no one should be this afraid of themselves and he knew all too well the dread she was feeling. They had made small conversations randomly as they walked, but it would fall away to silence as they both took to their own minds. It was strange to have such peace on a journey, he was used to the dog demon starting fights with Shippo or Kagome and even Sango would occasionally get riled up over something he would say or his glance lingering to long on whatever Sango deemed questionable which led to her outbursts.
It had been quite the pleasant contrast to their normal adventures, he quite enjoyed her quiet company as much as he did her conversations with him. It felt so natural and easy, the monk smiled at his thought. He had known the woman beside him for years now, their friendship might have started off with an attempted kidnapping, but it was all with good intention- laced with desire for the woman at the time too- but now as he tried to think about their time spent traveling he realized he had never TRULY been alone with Kagome.
She stumbled over a rock she couldn’t see during her next yawn and Miroku drew the line silently. “Lady Kagome. We need to branch off to the right at the next split. It will dead end but we will be able to go through the barrier and rest.” She had regained her balance before falling thankfully and aimed her flashlight at the rock in question.
“Maybe that is a good idea, I should have noticed that but I am tired. Lead the way?” She started to follow him then, flashlight glued to the ground.
“We could have stopped earlier if you were tired.” He casually threw the remark her way, wondering if he had been right.
“I-” she paused, the habit of not complaining because of the half demon trying to shine but right now it was just the two of them so she didn’t need to do that. “I am afraid to sleep.” Her voice was small and tired, she sounded more like a child than she ever had to him before; he did not like being right this time at all.
“I understand. If you want we can sleep in shifts, that way I can feel for the shift in your energy as I did on Kirara.” He almost missed the crack in the cave wall as he glanced from side to side with his beam of light then back again quickly once the seam was visible to him. “Here.”
He placed his hand on the seemingly innocent crack in the cave wall and began muttering softly, Kagome would have paid closer attention but the sudden thunderous echo that bounced around them made her squeal and almost launch into the still form of her focused friend. “It’s caving in!” She was over near death experiences for the day! Though a moment later the noise stopped abruptly and the spot where Miroku’s hand had been pressing was hollow and his hand was pushing into it up to his wrist.
He glanced around before sheepishly looking down at her. “Forgot about that.” She glared at him, though she was relieved it had been something as simple as a magical defense. Had she not been with Miroku she would have ran as fast as she could the way she had come. He took hold of her wrist without warning and pulled her through behind him as he entered the barrier. It felt like she was walking through glue that was trying to harden around her, everything inside of her screamed for oxygen and she wanted to change her answer about getting rest and just keep walking. Unfortunately Miroku still had a tight grip on her and she was stuck somewhere between the pressure and force of being on a roller coaster and sinking into a bog all at once. Just when she thought she wouldn’t be able to take the pressure anymore it dissolved against her skin in a cool burst as if she had jumped into a crisp river.
As they stepped through what felt like the longest three steps of her life Kagome wanted to collapse right where she stood. “What was that?” Her voice was tired and strained but to her relief when he spoke he was just as fatigued.
“That is a taste of what we have to get through once we get to the temple.” The shadows on his face made his expression unreadable, but that was when she noticed that their were shadows at all. Her gaze slowly lifted and she gasped at what she was looking at. The barrier was surrounding an entire separate cave that had a open top, she knew from her books that it was either from water erosion over time or from a cave-in that happened long ago and rain had softened the insides of the cave walls. There was the soft sound of water falling into water in the distance, when she squinted she could barely make out the smallest waterfall falling into what looked to be a tiny lake she assumed had a underwater cave system for the endless amount of water that came into the cavern. Stars were in the sky, they were far away from where they were in the cave, but not so far that she knew the morning would bathe the room in a soft glow. The moon was doing that for them now, bringing the shadows to life around them and the silhouette of what looked to be a small hut in the center of the cave below the opening above them.
“Oh wow.” She breathed out, taking another moment to look around before looking to her friend. “This is amazing.”
“Its even better in the morning. You’ll see.” He moved the flashlight so the beam was aimed at the hut in the distance. “Inside is food, sleeping mats, and wood for a fire. There is tea as well so we can gather water in the morning and enjoy a cup before setting off again.” He sounded more tired than he had before, but there was also the smallest hint of relief though she had no idea why she thought that. Perhaps she was just tired. She followed him, using her flashlight to look around more as she did so which was how she realized the whole place was covered in moss and that was why the ground was soft and spongy. She slipped her shoes off a few steps in and thoroughly enjoyed the sensation as she walked the few yards to the wooden steps leading up into the hut.
Miroku was already inside starting the fire with the logs in the fire pit as she came in. “The moss feels so good. I would almost sleep out there.” She half joked.
He smiled, glancing up at her. “Only if you are okay with being covered in dew in the morning.” She shook her head and he laughed, though it was brief and ended with a yawn. She yawned right after him, making him smile. “Sorry.”
She shook her head and glanced at the mat. She wanted to sleep so bad, but Kagome was so afraid that she would be consumed by her energy attacking her that she did not want to. “You can sleep first.” She could see that he felt sorry for her and ignored it, she did not want him to worry about her. “I might go swim in the water. Is it safe, Miroku?”
He nodded without hesitation. “You are in one of the safest places in all of Japan. Nothing would dare set foot here except for the Masters at the temple. And that is still quite a ways yet.” He was laying down on his mat now, his eyes closed as he spoke softly. “Anything that is here will not hurt you.” He had practically fallen asleep as he finished talking and Kagome tried not to giggle. She couldn’t help but think it was her fault. She had truly terrified her poor friend today, Kagome silently dug through her bag to find her bikini she used for bathing and towel then went out of the hut to let him rest. She changed quickly, even though Miroku was asleep and laughed at herself softly after. “Silly woman.”
The water was lukewarm, she expected it to be cold but it was pleasant to not be freezing while she was walking into the water. When the water got to her knees she found the drop off for the rock ledge. She took a few steps back and sat down, the water coming up to her ribs. As she sat soaking in the water she lost all track of time, her fingers playing across the water until it attracted small glowing fish from the depths of the inky black water beyond the drop off. She hesitated for a moment, then remembered what Miroku had said and continued to gently move her fingers in the water. As they got closer she realized they were actually very tiny bulbous fish with huge veil like fins that had the same silver glow as the fish only at random spots like freckles. They were beautiful as they swam around her, occasionally flowing out into the black then back to her as if they were trying to get her to come play.
She was childlike with her curiosity and without thinking about it she slipped below the dark waters beyond her little ledge. She was terrified for a moment when the angelic fish stopped glowing and it was all dark but just as she was about to start to panic more than a dozen lit up around her at all levels of the water she was in. Her gasp and laughter carried through the cavern when she came up for air, but she didn’t notice. Their fins tickled at her skin as one or two would swim around her in spirals while others would spin around with each other slowly in a dance like display. Kagome went under the water to see them over and over, holding her breath as long as she could to watch the ballet they performed in the water.
When Miroku heard the sound of Kagome’s laughter it woke him, he had never heard her laugh like that before. He had almost thought Rin was in clearing outside the hut which was why it had woken him. Rin would mean Sesshomaru. He had checked out the door to make sure he wasn’t hearing things and that was when he saw the entire small lake was lit up with silver orbs. “Moon fish.” He breathed out, he had forgotten how elegant they were. When he had seen them on his many travels here they would swim in the waters but never with him. Her laughter sounded again and he took a few steps out the door and onto the moss. He couldn’t see her. The sound of water shifting and Kagome taking a deep breath answered him. She was swimming with them! He quietly made his way to the water, seeing her swim beneath the surface and twirl with them was magnificent.
She came up for air and saw Miroku staring at her in wonder. She blushed instantly, the fish never stopping their swimming around her. “I didn’t mean to wake you.” She had a one piece bathing suit for when they would all swim together and Miroku had never seen her in two piece she was wearing- only Sango had.
“How did you do that?” He was watching one of the fish swim around her ankles while another would slink around her waist and dip down to meet the ankle fish.
“What do you mean?” Kagome thought the fish always did this.
“They have never let me swim with them, I have always wanted to.” She could hear the awe in his voice, the want.
“I was just sitting on the ledge in the water over there,” she pointed, “And they came up to investigate me. They kept swimming around me and then out to the water so I-” She giggled as one of the fins slid over her belly, “I slipped in the water and they all lit up.” She was moving around slowly in the water, still smiling at the fish. “What are they?”
“Moon fish. They are demon fish, but they are only dangerous if protecting themselves otherwise they are peaceful. There are only a handful of stories of them hurting anyone and that is since they were discovered centuries ago.” He had walked to the ledge now, examining where she had pointed too.
“Want to try?” she asked him innocently.
“I don’t want to ruin it and have them go away because I get in.” He was shaking his head, all the past times popping up in his memory.
“Oh nonsense. Just get in slow. First sit down on the ledge and let them come to you, then slide in slowly and start gently swimming.” She smiled at him, the glow of the fish randomly lighting her and the water up as the fish swam around.
Miroku hesitated but then his own childish heart won the battle and he was shrugging out of his robes. He left his under pants on, not wanting to get his entire set of robes wet but willing to wait long enough for the thin fabric of his underclothes to dry was suitable. He did as she told him to and after a few minutes Kagome was reaching out to him. “Come on Miroku. They wont go away.” She smiled, knowing what they would do when he slipped in and under the water as she had. The way Kagome looked with her hair now down and floating in the water, he wasn’t sure if the fish were the real reason he got in the water anymore but when she pulled him in softly and they both went under the water their world went black.
Miroku’s heart fell momentarily but Kagome still had a hold of his hand and was keeping him below the water. As he was going to swim up the moon fish all lit up at the same time again. He was suddenly in a sea of stars with Kagome. His eyes widened in the water and as he was looking around, he realized he had a problem.
There Kagome was, suspended in the water with him and she was just as beautiful as the moon fish around her. She was moving slowly, interacting with the fish with her fingers as her hair floated around her. Her bathing suit was black, which was a big contrast to how her skin looked almost ethereal in the water with the glow of the fish. She was stunning with the fish lighting her up. The problem was he went from seeing Kagome as the girl he knew before leaving the group, to seeing the woman that he was seeing now.
When the fish lit up seeing Miroku’s joy had been worth turning ten shades of red as he undressed to get in the water. She had noticed on several occasions that he was tone, as their entire group was from their travels, but she never let her eyes linger. Sango- Inuyasha. She took the brief moment to look at him though as he looked at the fish in awe around them as she had when she first got in. In her time he would have easily been on the cover of some male magazine or in a host club. His short choppy brown hair shifted in the water around him, she could see that his muscles were lean and define, but before she could admire more of him one of the larger fish swam in between them and she was moving after it slowly until she needed to breathe again.
Miroku broke the surface just after her, shaking his hair out. “Thank you.” He smiled at the woman, never letting on that the way he viewed her had shifted so dramatically in that day. First when he had thought she would fall from his grasp, second when he had to let go, and now with this- there was no way Miroku could deny that he understood why Sango was jealous of Kagome, why Inuyasha wanted to kill Kouga when he touched her.
After another hour or so of swimming with the fish they began to one by one swim away and stop glowing, Miroku was first out of the water and offered her a hand to help her out. She took it, not thinking about it until she was being lifted with ease up and out of the water to step onto the rocky floor.
She had involuntarily let out a squeak when she realized just how strong the monk was. “Did I hurt you? I’m sorry.” She could hear the panic in his voice, he was looking her up and down to see how he had managed to hurt her.
“Oh. No. No. It’- It’s just chilly after being in the water.” She stumbled into a recovery and wrapped her arms around herself, watching him flush a bit and step away from her.
“Yes. Well. The fire is still going inside. I will change outside of the hut so you can use inside.” She wrapped the towel around herself as they walked silently through the moss covered cave, glancing at one another. She thanked him as she walked into the hut and quickly began to peel the bikini off of her. She shivered when the cool cloth of her kimono touched her skin and as she was tying it together Miroku’s voice was outside the door. “Are you decent?”
“You can come in now, Miroku. Thank you.” She was blushing when he walked in the hut, barely having finished the knot which made him shift his eyes away to the fire.
“That was refreshing. Perhaps now we can both sleep for the next few hours since dawn will be bright in the cave.” He smiled, watching the petite woman lay down on the mat opposite him on the other side of the fire. He watched her eyes slowly blink open and closed a few times before she was asleep, her features soft and peaceful. He sighed softly, rolling onto his back so he was staring at the roof of the hut and not the woman asleep mere feet from him. “I am only here to train her.” He whispered to himself before willing his mind to sleep.
