Using the shard's power in her favor, united with her natural clear aura, Annabelle floated, following Kohaku's trail. The boy was fast and was pretty much ahead, the western lass' gaze saw him almost as a little dot between the trees. It took some time till Anna reach him and finally realize what was happening. In the sky, there was a colorful horde of yokai, on the ground she could see Kohaku attacking Sango, who seemed confused and just kept defending herself from his blows with her Hiraikotsu.
"He has sent you here, didn't he? Naraku, that bastard!" Sango cursed in anger, yet her voice trembled, sorrowful.
He didn't respond, just followed the itinerary his master has commanded and insisted on attacking the Demon Slayer with his weapon.
Sango's knees began to bend for the effort of holding Hiraikotsu as a shield while Kohaku persisted on hitting against it over and over again, he wouldn't give up. Her big feline yokai was looking around and sniffing the air, smelling something. Suddenly, a tree nearby just leaned into Kohaku's direction and two branches embraced him. His sister watched his struggle trying to break free and she fell onto her knees, stunned. Kirara looked up, contemplating Annabelle suddenly descending.
"Anna..." the astonished Demon Slayer uttered the name, as a translucent forcefield broke right behind her, like it was a mirage, opening the passage to her friends at last.
"Naraku, that bastard, tried to separate us just to trick Sango again!" Inuyasha spat, coming closer in a single jump, with his colossal sword in hand, ready to cut anything on the way. Then, he sensed a familiar scent and had a glimpse of Annabelle going to Kohaku, moving the branches away to hold him herself.
Kagome and Miroku also arrived in time to see the red-haired lass keeping the boy into her arms till he cease to struggle and gaze her in the eyes. Then, after a few seconds of a deep gaze, the foggy brown eyes restored some gleam and life.
"W-what happened?!" The kid asked fearful.
"Shh..." Annabelle caressed his forehead, and then rested one hand over his trembling sight. Soon Kohaku fell into a deep slumber.
"What have you done?" Inuyasha scolded and was ready to come near, but Sango put an arm in front of him.
At last, the foreigner walked towards Kohaku's sister, carrying him carefully, till they were close enough so she could deliver the kid into his only family's hands.
Many of the flying yokai have been defeated by the Wind's Scar before, however, some survived the blow and they were enough to fastly approach the group and steal the boy from his sister's embrace. Sango screamed and tried to hit them with her weapon, yet they had flown so fast that no one of them could do much to impede the monsters' scape. A cloud of Saimyosho was covering the rest of the horde, preventing Miroku to use his Kazaana.
Anger grew within Anna's core. Her hands closed tight while her coppery locks agitated, floating above. Kagome noticed the woman's shard incandescent whiteness and when Belle turned to face them all, the once blue eyes glowed in the same color of the light surrounding her entire being.
"I will protect him!" She said vehemently to Sango, before her body flew like a rocket after the little crowd of monsters, servants of: "Naraku!" Anna vociferated that name when she arrived in the castle, having no problems to cross it's barrier, and she knew that it was so easy this time because he let it be. "Naraku!" Her throat wasn't spared, shouting by the desert yard, then insisting on calling him in such loud tone while sliding abruptly every door in the way, violently hitting her feet on the wooden floor, stopping such endeavor only when she found the hanyo inside a room, sitting in front of a futon where Kohaku laid unconscious. As soon as he saw her, his lips curved into a smirk.
"Oh" Naraku stared at her naturally "so you are back" he faked an indifferent tone.
"What is this shit?!" Anna came closer, still stepping heavily.
"What are you talking about?" He blinked, acting as if not understanding, standing up.
"You son of a..." the phrase ended into a hiss. Soon the lass was almost over him, with her fists punching his shoulders.
"And we come back to our relationship beginnings" Chuckling, he didn't move, nor tried to stop her. In front of the human, the Spider watched her punching and slapping his shoulders, chest and belly without rest, while grunting and cursing.
"You disgusting bastard! You promised you wouldn't hurt me anymore! You... Ugh!" she growled when wasn't able to find any other offense to spit.
"But I did you no harm, my dear Annabelle Rose" still unshakeable, he cupped her cheeks in his hands and moved away some hair falling over her eyes.
"And how do you think I feel when you make this boy try to kill his sister? Do you think I rejoice when you choose to hurt people, to turn one against another, you piece of shit?!" The arms got tired of hitting that body which didn't even shake a bit, so they leaned down, her fingers grabbed her skirt.
"And since when did I say that I would abandon my plans when I had you in here?" One eyebrow of his arched, crimson eyes focused on her features with a challenging look. Annabelle lost the air and the flush for instants. All of sudden, any sound got stuck inside her already burning throat. Well, if she wouldn't speak, Naraku proceeded: "I have accepted you are not willing to help me to achieve my goals, yet I never said I would give them up".
"You are right". Turquoise eyes lowered, staring at the dark floor. A morbid smile showed up, almost causing chills into the hanyo's spine, making his façade of indifference dissolve.
"What are you thinking of right now?" he asked, not hiding his curiosity.
"How foolish I was" the lass answered almost murmuring her realization to herself, walking away slowly, with her steps directed to the door.
"Where are you going?" Naraku's fingers evolved her wrist firmly enough to cause some discomfort.
"To my room" her voice sounded vague, still keeping her back to him.
"You are lying." The hanyo squeezed her skin a bit more. Annabelle restrained a moan.
"Let me go, you're hurting me" her complaint was as low and weak as it has been her last sentence.
"What did you expect to happen when you decided to come here?" He ignored her demand and turned the woman to face him again, willing to analyze her every feature, something he was used to do well. However, Annabelle's semblance was nothing but a pale, faded canvas, like the image of an empty hull. A horrifying cold ran into his belly.
"Honestly? I don't know. I just wanted all this sorrow to be ended, but as I see, it makes no difference if I am here or far away, this stain never leaves, just keep growing instead." Her tune, her gaze, every little detail of Anna showed only apathy. Whatever that woman should be enduring was very well hidden.
Once again, the arachnid felt terribly guilty and his grip around her wrist was undone. He had no wish to break her, like he often enjoyed to do with his victims. Even so, Naraku couldn't leave all his plans behind for her sake. "Will you leave?" The question sounded unpretentious.
"Where would I go? I'm sick and tired to wander around" She spoke as if it didn't matter anymore, her sky-blue pools still looking emotionless.
At last, Kohaku started to open his eyes, waking up, feeling dizzy. As soon as the boy mumbled a sound, Annabelle's features changed abruptly and she knelt by his side, stroking Sango's brother bangs.
"Mistress?" he sounded sleepy yet "What happened?"
"You fell asleep, that's all. Everything is fine" The lass held one of his hands and caressed it, comforting the kid.
Naraku watched in silence that scene, focused on her sudden change of posture. The eyes once lifeless regained their tender gleam, so did her voice, now so melodic and sweet. Even to a boy she barely knew, Annabelle would dedicate a kind of attention that she didn't offer to Naraku for quite a while. A glimpse of such affection he felt inside a cave a time ago. The hanyo felt so angry that couldn't contain a deep grumble. She looked at him discretely in response.
"Who was that woman in the woods?" Kohaku asked and received a disapproving gaze of his master.
"I think you were dreaming, little one" Annabelle said tenderly, trying to pacify the tension. "Come, let's go so Kohaku can rest a bit more." She rose up and lifted one hand to the castle lord. Since he hadn't move, the foreigner covered his fingers with hers and pulled him together outside of that chamber, having to put minimal effort on such enterprise, for the arachnid was numbed enough to let being conducted. Once they were in the corridor, she just dropped his hand and began to walk to her room. Without looking behind, Anna could hear his steps following hers though. She just pretended to ignore it till reaching the bedchamber and crossing the door. The lass slid it fast, yet a hand prevented it to close. Annabelle could see a half of his troubled face beyond the gap.
"What do you want?" She asked impatiently.
"You" the hanyo forced the door to slid open again.
To be continued...
