Prompt Summary: Down in a valley, Bankotsu hunts down the men he was after.
With only one rider on her back, the horse was able to travel much faster and in a fraction of the time it had taken them to get to town that morning, Bankotsu was already back at the camp and following the trail leading away from it. Though they were already well over half a day ahead of him, Bankotsu was sure he would be able to catch up with them quickly enough.
One man could travel much faster than three especially when he had more reason for speed than they did. They had no way of knowing he was following their trail. No reason to expect they hadn't gotten away clean with what they had done. But his journey on the other hand was fueled by anger and the desire for revenge. He had every reason to go as fast as he could while they had none.
But as the road began to get rocky, forcing Bankotsu to slow down as much as he wanted to continue pushing forward, he decided it was the fates telling him he was pushing his horse to hard and eased up on the poor animal. The two of them had been through so much together and she deserved more than to be injured because he pushed her too hard for too long.
Traveling as far as he could by horseback, Bankotsu waited until the last moment to dismount and began leading her by the reigns. Because of the terrain, he would have to make the rest of the trip on foot, but judging by how late it was getting, he was certain the men would be stopping soon for the night. With any luck, they would be camped close by and Bankotsu would be able to overtake them that night. He didn't want to leave Jakotsu alone any longer than he had to.
Dusk was just settling over the valley when Bankotsu reached the peak of the large hill he was climbing and took his first look below. Though the ground continued to be too rocky to ride his horse on the way down, beyond that the ground evened out. Looking forward to getting off of his feet soon, Bankotsu was about to pick up the pace when something in the distance caught his eye.
Calling for his horse to stop, he turned his attention to the smoke rising in the distance. No more than a five minute ride below him, smoke rose from a chimney above the only house he could see in the valley. Hoping it was either them or someone there had seen them, Bankotsu decided to chance riding a bit closer. Riding as far as he dared chance in case they were there and heard him coming, Bankotsu tied up his horse on a nearby tree and stealthily made his way closer.
Soon he was close enough to peer in through the dusty windows and found two of the three men he was looking for; only their leader remained hidden from sight. Noticing an old, dusty black and white photograph resting on the mantel above the fireplace, it only took him a moment to realize the old man and his wife in the picture was not one of the men.
Fearing the worst for the elderly couple, he began carefully searching around the outside of the home; keeping an eye out for the leader. If they had done something to the couple that lived there, he doubted their bodies would have been left inside. It only took him a few minutes to find the freshly dug grave out in back of the outhouse and it was enough to confirm his suspicion.
Even if they had stumbled upon their bodies after the couple had died of natural causes, only a bastard would bury them in a single, unmarked grave behind the outhouse. There could be no greater dishonor done to the dead. Vowing to give them a better burial when he was done, Bankotsu began making his way over to what he hoped would prove the best cover since they had him at a disadvantage.
They outnumbered him three to one and they had the safety of the house while he was most exposed out there. Once he was sure he was as protected as he was going to be, Bankotsu waited until the third man had finally stepped into the open before calling out, "Get out here you yellow- bellied dogs!" The effect of his words were instantaneous as the men jumped to their feet and began rushing out with their guns drawn.
From his position behind a large boulder, he could hear the leaders shouts for his men to spread out, but Bankotsu paid them little attention. He did not plan on letting them live long enough to flank him. Cocking his gun, Bankotsu raised his gun and took aim at the very moment he was spotted by the leader. His eyes widen a fraction of an inch when he realize who it was before sneering at him. A moment later, the first shot rang out in the valley.
