Naraku slid the big doors of the castle's entrance and soon his eyes caught the view of his dearest human sitting on the veranda's edge, gazing a new adornment, made by herself, in the center of the demised yard.
But how? He wondered when glimpsed a tree with branches filled by white flowers, just as the one which has blossomed there not so long ago. Stunned, the halfbreed spider demon walked till he was by the Scottish lass' side.
"Did you like it?" she asked calmly.
"How did you do that?" There was admiration, but also a certain apprehension on his inquiry.
"You know... my gift" Anna gazed at her own hands. "But if you want me to undo it, it's fine".
"No!" Naraku anticipated, yet soon he recovered his calmness "It is a beautiful tree, I just don't understand how any plant could survive my miasma..." He sat by Anna's side. While thinking about her magic, he noticed the thin whitish veil covering Annabelle's piece of art, just like her very gleaming protective halo. "Oh, of course..." A discrete smile adorned his lips when the hanyo realized what should have been obvious. That tree was just like her, a spot of light lost in the dark, apathetic, yet enduring...
That weak curve on his lips got straight again. The woman next to him kept her gaze over her newest work, still Naraku's acute senses enabled his ears to capture the pound of her racing heartbeats, the sound of an amount of saliva descending her anguished throat. Annabelle was already anxious, and the sensation grew intenser as soon as he took his place by her side. If she was a yokai, surely would find out that his state of spirit wasn't so different though.
"Would you share your thoughts with me?" The arachnid asked, pretending very well to be serene.
"I'm thinking about many things..." She breathed in and blinked her eyes slowly, searching for some selfcontrol. "I think of the summer skies, the spring flowers, even the whiteness of winter snow. I'm just thinking about things I miss". Her eyes remained locked on that tree, but she could notice by her peripheral vision some curiosity's features inside his crimson orbs, perhaps even a shade of insecurity.
"Things you miss?" After questioning, he hummed. His tone was predictable. The dissonant notes of jealousy were completing the deep melody of his velvet low voice.
"Naraku" Finally, Anna turned her face and found courage to stare directly at him, remembering every detail of the recent hours she had spent gathered with the hanyo, sharing a sheltering embrace of gratitude. "What do I mean to you?" Both of them grew paler with her sudden doubt, yet their gazes didn't break contact, hers trembling, his widened. Since the hanyo didn't say a word, Annabelle controlled her breath and her nervousness to resume speaking: "You said you would erase my memories, but they remain pretty vivid to me. You said you would..." Make me your mate. She thought, yet wasn't bold enough to share it. "Why do I still remember everything?"
"Once you said to me that forgetting who you were would be like dying, remember?" He recalled, while secretly shimmying within "You have always been so convict, even Kagewaki had an unstable constitution, but you... You always knew what you wished for, and what were your beliefs" The hanyo sighed, ruminating his own remembrances of Anna and Hitomi's warming moments he used to watch from the dark. "The human being has the ability to love and to hate someone in the same intensity. You are an exception though, not even me, after everything I have done, your heart came to hate".
Annabelle could identify into his eyes that same look of when she almost died by drowning, it was a blend of sadness and worrying. His hands were resting over his legs. Quivering, she caught one of them between hers and speaking low, almost murmuring, the lass asked again "What do I mean to you?"
"What do I mean to you?" He returned the question, arching an eyebrow, sounding defiant and unsure at the same time. There wasn't sarcasm, nor a trace of malice into that reddish mesmerizing vastness. Annabelle felt herself being dragged inside those rubies, her stomach felt compressed in her belly, still, fear was possessing the woman, impeding any move or speech. Her hands opened, letting his slip away. At last her blurred eyes lowered. Naraku took her chin between his fingers, lifting her face up. Anna's eyelids sealed while she gasped.
"I see" He said, breaking the touch and the proximity. The foreigner wanted to scream and her voice just wouldn't go out. He walked away in a tenebrous muteness.
Annabelle had some theories, yet she feared allowing herself to believe them. Naraku, on it's turn, had many certainties.
Kagura has been watching them from a window, and she had some ideas and hopes as well.

Kohaku was contemplating the sun going down behind a hill, while following the steps of that group of strangers. Analyzing their features, the boy would notice most of them worried and suspicious. Yet, there was that smiling demon slayer, always treating him tenderly. She looked so familiar!
All of sudden, as his gaze was locked on the lass who said to be his sister, images began to pop into his mind and the little lad petrified. It was him, holding a weapon, reaping the life of many people, and at last, the same docile creature who was smiling to him seconds ago, appeared on that memory calling his name desperately crying, till arrows hit his back, and then everything became dark as a hole. Kohaku gasped, pallid by horror.
"What have I done?" His voice cracked, while he held his head in his hands.
"Kohaku?" Sango, walking a bit ahead, ceased her steps and turned back. Her fingers reached the boy's shoulders, however her little brother seemed to be trapped inside another time, lost into a gloomy memoir. "I think he is remembering everything!" She told Kagome, who was right behind, also looking worried. "Kohaku, it's alright, please calm down!" The demon slayer held him, but the poor kid remained paralyzed, his face's expressions terrified. "It's alright, you're safe now!" She repeated many times, caressing his back.
He pushed his sister, acting instinctively, maybe attached to a vain hope of departing from pain for some instants. Free of Sango's grip, Kohaku ran back into the woods.
"Kohaku!" The demon slayer shouted and followed him. Miroku called Kirara and as soon as the cat increased in size, he rode her into his friend's trail.
"Inuyasha, we must go after them!" Kagome said convictedly.
"What if it is another Naraku's trap?" Shippo asked, retracting himself into the girl's arms.
"Of course it is, but we have to go anyway!" the silver-haired hanyo groaned, still so he didn't think twice before jumping between the trees, carrying Kagome and Shippo on his back. He was fast, so they reached the destiny soon. Inuyasha followed the boy's scent and found him leaning against a trunk, while his sister uselessly tried to solace him. It didn't look like Kohaku was under somebody's control, he was just a miserable child which shoulders were shaking because of his sobbing cries.
"Listen, it wasn't your fault." Sango tried to explain. "You remembered, didn't you?"
It was not like the kid had regained all the memories of his life, some lacunae remained unsolved, only the worse moments were pulsing into him, making Kohaku contorts himself because of a profound pain inside his head and inside his heart.
Inuyasha took a deep breath and came near, touching his shoulder. "Yo..." He said, and as soon as Kohaku turned to face him, the hanyo just punched him in the stomach, making the child faint.
"Inuyasha!" Kagome and Sango yelled together. Miroku observed in silence the half demon carefully catch the kid into his arms, before glaring at the raged girls.
"This will calm him down for now, we need to find a safe place to spend the night." Inuyasha rested that little unconscious body over his shoulder. The rest of them ended up understanding his act, even if it was questionable, and followed ahead the path he trailed. In that age, people couldn't underestimate the dangers concealed in the woods, mostly at night, and Kohaku wouldn't settle down so soon.

Annabelle was sitting against a wall, in the corner of her bedchamber, with arms embracing her legs, chin resting over knees. Her vision focused on nothing, for everything she could see was a moment, not a place. The lass was recalling the past hours with Naraku. The two of them entwined, without trading words, but only sighs. His hand upon hers, caressing it softly, and the jewel glimmering right ahead...

The hanyo's skin, so soft, did not even seem to belong to a being who already has been disfigured countless times. The warm spider scar revolved under Annabelle's timid touch, and at first Naraku went rigid, his youki began to spread again. So with a simple "shh" into his ear and a kiss on his cheek, she has been able to pacify his internal ghosts. Annabelle insisted on caressing his mark tenderly, fingers smoothed the burned eight legs carved in his skin. Little by little, the arachnid melted into her arms and finally allowed himself to appreciate that moment.

She couldn't recall exactly when the owner of the most beautiful crimson eyes began to feel asleep and surrendered to the slumber inside her embrace, however such event has haunted her since then. It was him there, so vulnerable within her grip. Never in any other occasion Naraku would let himself unlock his guard with someone else. He trusted her... or he trusted in the effect he had over her for Shikon no Tama's shard sake.

Annabelle carefully laid him down, she didn't want to wake the hanyo up, still his head refused to leave her lap and she felt pity on taking it off the comfort of her legs. Therefore, Anna let him laying there and stroked his long, black curls spread all around. Contemplating the serene face, she already could see some distinctions between his features and the passed Young Master. Indeed, there has been a while that when Belle looked at the spider, she would see much more Naraku than Kagewaki. It harmed, shattered her soul into pieces, and the lass wouldn't be able to tell if the reason of such pain was a reminiscent grief, feeling of missing, or if it was about something new, a mysterious seed growing into her depths, which she had no idea of what kind of plant it would become. Anna was sure of only one thing though: she was very, very afraid of it.

All that strange sensations were scaring her to the bones. Then, Annabelle brought back the conversation she had with Kikyo, and the place mentioned by the priestess came to her mind. She even considered the idea to run away to there and restart her life on a place distant from yearning and doubts, but the single thought of being away from him caused her another kind of pain, and the torment had no end.
The door slid slowly, an icy chill ran through the woman's spine, her eyes widened. Her throat was so dry that it could barely move it's muscles to swallow a minimal amount of saliva.
It was Kagura. Annabelle released her breath, feeling relieved and frustrated in consonance. How could it be possible?
"Kagura..." the foreigner said lowly, however the demoness didn't gave her time to speak any further.
"If you managed to help Kohaku, I believe you can help me either" kneeling in front of her, she stared deeply into the human's eyes, without a single blink. "Set me free".
"W-what?"
"Make him retrieve my heart, make Naraku let me go as well!" there was despair sounding in that request, and too much sadness hidden behind the proud behavior of the Wind Sorceress.
"Kagura, I don't believe I have such power..." she said a bit sad, feeling skeptical about it.
"Yes, you have!" the yokai captivated her hands firmly, disconcerting the ginger lass. "He will do anything for you, don't you see? Help me..." Kagura's gesture and pleading finally disarmed Annabelle.
"I'll try, it's a promise" after inhaling profoundly, she said sympathetic and determined.
A smile colored the spider's creation face, maybe that curve on her scarlet lips would be the greatest gentleness' demonstration she could ever express, since her life has been so bitter from the start. Soon after Anna's statement, Kagura looked to the sides cautiously, and then she raised up and went out the room quickly, forgetting to close it's door. Annabelle remained were she was, facing that open entrance, awaiting for someone else's visit, yet he didn't come. He would not dare.
Naraku found himself struggling against internal conflicts, pretty much similar to the hers. His troubled soul revolved inside his flesh, as his heart pumped as violent as the beating of a drum. He hated that sensation and would give anything to get rid of it. The hanyo still could feel a shadow of pity into Anna's gestures, and that damn gemstone persisted whispering about it into his ear all the time.
Pity. Pity and desire, nothing more. And what he felt seemed far beyond of all of that... Only thinking about the possibility of loving her, rage would grow inside him like an infernal fire. He couldn't, he was not even capable of feeling love. Wasn't he?
The door opened abruptly, yet even before the hanyo had already sensed her presence and his whole body shivered. This was she after all, a woman which attitude would overcome her fears. Her heart screamed she had to meet him, and so did the lass – without thinking, impulsive, instinctive – a free spirit, as he knew she has always been like. Naraku silently watched the foreigner coming closer. Noticing she would not sit, he rose up elegantly and stared at her, paying attention on her gasping chest rising and falling, while she seemed to prepare herself to speak anything, and still not a word was coming from her lips.
To be continued...
