Feeling concern for him, and unaware of the true reason behind his hasty departure, Kagome ran to find her shoes and to give chase to the fleeing hanyou before he could make it off into the night. She had to talk to him tonight, before her courage was gone.
Catching up to him hadn’t been difficult, considering that by the time she pulled on her boots and hobbled uncomfortably down the driveway in them, she found him leaned against the gate, eyes closed while he deeply inhaled the fresh night air that had yet to be tainted by the scent of teenage pheromones. It was still lightly scented with booze, but it was a relief compared to that rancid stench that kept torturing him before.
“Are you okay?” Kagome asked, hesitantly touching his shoulder. It felt odd to do so, and she worried that he would take offense, or react angrily to her assumption that she could begin physical contact of any sort between them, but he merely cracked open one eye at her, and smirked faintly.
“I’m fine. It was just the noise that got to me,” he tried to explain, not so rude that he could brush away her open concern.
“Oh…” Her hopes of getting to know him a little were dashed. He was already planning on leaving the party, which she could see already by the way that he straightened and leaned away from the gate to glance down the street.
“You need a walk home?” he suddenly asked, feeling spur of the moment and impulsive. It was against his better judgment to go anywhere with the raven-haired beauty. Something in his gut told him that it was a bad idea. Human girls were much more unpredictable than youkai females, according to his father, and even his elder brother, whom he had heard cursing one female in particular one night. With a female youkai, there was a 95% chance that she was in it for the wealth, fame, or for less comforting and more devious reasons, therefore, the male knew not to trust her. Rarely did one join with a male for true love. With a human, the chance of it being any one of those reasons was a much smaller chance that made judging the relationship difficult and hard until it was too late, and the viper female had struck, acquiring what she wanted. A human was capable of anything, and because of that, they were just as dangerous and wily as a youkai. Mariko had proved that by disappearing, and even managing to remain hidden so long while carrying Inutaisho’s child.
“Huh?” Kagome blinked at him, caught by surprise.
“I said, do you need a walk home?” he repeated. “Dumb girl,” he muttered under his breath, causing her cheeks to grow red. She was a moment away from refusing his offer and turning to stalk back into the house before gut feeling told her to ride it out, and ignore the brash façade that seemed to hide the true Inuyasha from her. There was more to him than met the eye, but she had yet to determine just what it was.
“The shrine isn‘t far from here, so it won‘t take you long if you really want to.”
She’s going to talk me to death, he already knew. But, it gave him something to do, and prevented the need for an early return home, thus allowing him to avoid awkward questions by his mother about the party. Maybe when he returned, she would be asleep, and he could escape such a fate.
Together, he and Kagome made their way down the night street. He followed her mostly, a bit unfamiliar with the current area, and route that would lead him back to the shrine that his feet had accidentally carried him to on that one day.
“So, uhh…how do you like our school?” she asked, attempting to start conversation.
“I guess its okay.”
“Don’t you like the teachers too?” she asked with a wide, beaming smile.
“Feh.“ As far as he was concerned, the teachers were ditzes and he could do without this silly human crap called school. His tutors had been better, to the point, and taught him more of what he needed for the real world, especially since he had absolutely no desire to attend college or cram school, and merely wanted his degree so that he could be done.
“Do you miss your old home?” she asked cautiously, trying to find a subject that he enjoyed.
He looked at her, and his dark brown eyes seemed so completely out of place compared to the gorgeous hazel orbs that had peered at her near her home. She longed to see them again, and sighed when he turned away and continued walking after making a slight sound in his throat of acknowledgment to her question. “Sometimes…”
“Would you go back if you could?”
“Not without Mom…” he murmured, walking with his gaze directed towards the night sky. The sliver of silver crescent moon that hung in the darkened night sky was a reminder of what was soon to come. For as long as he lived, the new moon had been a time of fear, concern, disgust, and shame for him. His father had always been the one to show concern, fearing that his son could be harmed during his vulnerable period. Sesshoumaru had always shown disgust, fearing that the good title of his father’s name (that would one day be his own) was smudged by the mere existence of a hanyou weakening their bloodline. Inuyasha himself, had always felt shame, wishing he could be anything but a hanyou. He wasn’t youkai, and strong like his brother, worthy of being in the same room with the great Sesshoumaru. He wasn’t human, he had been robbed of his mother who was unable to hold him close and allow him to visit because he was ‘different’.
The timing of the party was uncomfortably close to the night of the new moon. Had it been scheduled a day later, he would have been forced to remain home, hidden away in his bedroom where no one could see his change. The first night the change had come upon him, Mariko had found him sitting in the darkened corner of his bedroom, gazing forlornly out the window. The expression on his face had been akin to a boy who had seen his childhood dog shot right before his eyes.
Of course, there was no need to explain the situation to her. She was his mother, afterall, and during the little bit of time that she had spent with him during his infant months, she had noticed the change that befell him during the new moon. The only thing that did surprise her, was how utterly handsome he was as a teenager with his sleek black locks and violet eyes.
“You must really love your mom,” Kagome replied with a smile. She glanced over at him, charmed by his good looks, and envying him for his platinum tresses. “Most guys wouldn’t admit that.”
Inuyasha blinked, shifting his eyes from the sky and towards the girl beside him. I guess I do love Mom. I never really thought of it. Even though I didn’t know her all of my life, and can’t remember being with her, I wouldn’t leave her now even if I could return to the mansion, he thought, surprised at himself. “Yeah,” he replied, clearing his throat and changing the subject hastily before a blush could overtake his cheeks. “So what’s with the get-up?” he asked.
“What do you mean, Inuyasha?” Kagome paused, setting her hands on her hips, which were barely covered by the low-rise pants molded to her lower body.
“Do you normally wear clothes you can’t bend over in and shoes it hurts to walk in?”
Kagome blinked, her mouth opening and closing, causing her to resemble a fish for several moments. “You…you big jerk! I can too bend over and I walk just fine!”
“Then why do you keep stopping to adjust your toes and your feet!?”
He had her there, and she pouted grumpily before folding her arms beneath her tightly clothed bosom. Her straight ahead stare gave him plenty of time to ogle her appearance. Regardless of how silly she looked in such inappropriate tire for a dancing party, Inuyasha was certain she could have fulfilled the fantasies of many men in Tokyo wearing such an outrageous outfit. And she wasn’t wearing a bra under it…
I’m practically drooling over her chest. She doesn’t even look that good! Inuyasha tried to convince himself, tearing his gaze away. “You won’t be able to make it up those stairs,” he spoke outloud as they came to a stop at the bottom of the shrine. “Get on.”
“Huh?” She lifted a brow at him, glancing from the heels of her shoes, to the steps leading up, and winced. He was right, but was he seriously considering carrying her?
“On my back,” he answered, crouching down until he was at a level that she could reach with ease. Hesitantly, Kagome obliged and climbed onto his back, with one slim thigh at either side of his body. Inuyasha grinned like a Cheshire cat, supporting her with a hand on each of those toned upper thighs. She was so light, and the body tight design of the pants caused her intimate spot to press right against his back.
“I’m not too heavy, am I?” she asked over the top of his head.
“Nah. Like a bag of feathers.” Kagome squealed as he took off, and ran up each step until they reached the front door of the shrine. He lowered her carefully to the ground, and turned around with intent to leave, until a scent tickled his nose, causing it to twitch. Leather, moist leather, and the faintest almost inperceptible hint of arousal. She was turned on by that?! Now, Inuyasha wasn’t the most knowledgeable when it came to sex acts and mating, but he knew the smell of sex, and he knew the smell that was characteristic of a woman that was aroused. He smirked.
Kagome shuffled on the front steps, surprised at her own reaction to the ride. Damned Sango and her insistence on wearing such tight clothing. Her crotch had been forced to press right against Inuyasha’s back, and each movement as he bounded up the stairs caused sensitive spots to bounce and rub against the lining of her silken undergarment. It had been pleasureable, and she was rather thankful he didn’t understand the reason for her squealing.
She was about to open her mouth to thank him and say goodnight, when the porchlight suddenly clicked on, bathing both figures with light.. The door opened, framing the robe clad form of Mrs. Higurashi. “Kagome, dear? You’re home rather early, your curfew wasn’t for another hour. Oh, who’s this with you?”
Great, he thought, glancing at the woman inside the house. She looked kind, however, that was what worried him. Kind women were often talkative women. And talkative mothers usually were nosy mothers. He knew that from the experience of being with his own now.
Kagome had not told her mother about the boy she had gone out of her way to impress. Already she could see her mother’s eyes studying the clothes she wore, which she had not left the house in. Damn Sango! she cursed silently again, thankful when her mother didn’t seem as if she would question her outfit. “This is Inuyasha. He’s a boy from my school in the same grade. He walked me home from the party.”
“What a sweet boy!” Mrs. Higurashi praised, opening the door wide for the entrance of both teens. “Well come in, come in, don’t just stand outside. Are you due home any time soon, young man, or do you have time to stay for snacks and tea?”
“Well…” Inuyasha rubbed the back of his neck, thinking. He really didn’t have a curfew, as far as he knew. The agreement between he and his mother was that he not stay out past a reasonable time, and that he not get himself into trouble or cause her any unnecessary worry. And if his mother discovered he had turned down such a nice invitation, he’d never hear the end of it.
You should go out and make some friends, Inuyasha. Meet a nice girl, play sports with some boys your age. You shouldn’t sit around the house and wander the streets all the time alone. Nag nag nag nag nag.
But it was a friendly, and concerned nagging, which was the only reason he tolerated it. Mariko wanted nothing but the best for him, yet at the same time, she feared the reaction of those very same friends she urged him to find. What if they couldn’t accept his difference?
“I’ve got time.”

The Higurashi shrine was rather nice, and a far cry from the tiny apartment that he shared with his mother. Kagome’s mother served both teens drinks and leftovers from that evening’s dinner before disappearing to leave them to each other’s company.
“Your mom’s pretty nice,” he commented while stuffing his face. “So where’s youd?” d?”
Kagome played with her chopsticks, swirling around a strip of beef on her plate. “He died a few years ago after my little brother was born. I don’t remember much about him,” she answered quietly.
Inuyasha mentally groaned at his own stupidity. Way to go, genius. Bring up bad memories. “Gomennasai, Kagome.”
“Don’t be. It’s not your fault.” She blew gently on her tea, studying the steam that rose from the dark surface of the liquid before taking another sip. “Your father…umm…he died too, didn’t he? The kids at school say a lot of things…”
“Yeah, he did. Everything you’ve heard probably is true. I stopped listening to the rumors a while ago.”
“Good! You shouldn’t have had to listen to them in the first place. It’s rude of them to speak that way about you when they don’t even know anything,” Kagome decided, smiling across the table at him. “Is your father where you got your eyes from? They’re so beautiful. Can I see them again?” Way to compliment him, Kagome. A few more comments like that and he’ll think you’re coming on to him like a drunken prom date.
Inuyasha, who hadn’t expected such a request, nearly blinked his contacts out. Actually, it was the only way he really could remove them safely. His claws, which grew back rather quickly after being filed and blunted, gave him so much trouble that his mother often had to put them in for him in the morning before school. Getting them out was just as much of a struggle. “Uhh, sure…if you don’t mind taking them out. I’ve never been real good at doing it,” he replied at last, removing the small case from his pocket, and carefully unscrewing it to avoid spilling the clear liquid.
“I can imagine why,” she murmured, her own dark eyes shifting towards his clawed fingers, which rested on the kitchen table. Kagome leaned forward, across the table, taking painstaking care to remove the left contact first. When her fingers grazed against the skin beneath his eye, he slightly flinched, forced to maintain eye contact so that the dark brown disk could be removed. Both contacts were gently slid from their position of obscuring his gold irises, then placed in the solution. “There,” she said, offering him a smile. “That’s better.”
“Yeah it is, I hate wearing them.”
“Why don’t you get glasses. You know, lenses since you need to protect your eyes. You’d look cute.”
Yeah, and anyone who knows a thing or two about demonic heritage would put two and two together, he thought. Inuyasha pocketed the container for his contacts, then glanced down at his empty plate, swiftly changing the subject. “You got a phone that I can call my mom with so she doesn’t freak out?”
“Oh! Sure.” Kagome hopped up from her seat to sprint out of the room in search of a phone. When she returned, Inuyasha fumbled with the dial pad, trying carefully to avoid scratching them with his claw tips.
“Moshi moshi,” Mariko answered, the sound of the television in the background.
“Hey, Ma, its me. I just wanted to let you know that I’ll be home soon. I stopped at--” He paused midsentence, drawing in a breath as his yellow eyes took in the sight of a hopeful Kagome. “A friend’s house after the party.”
“A girl, Inuyasha? Is she pretty?”
“Mom!”
“Oh, alright. You can let me know what she looks like when you get home. Or bring her over tomorrow!”
“Mom,” he groaned out again. He only hoped that Kagome couldn’t hear his mother’s anxious and overly eager questions from her position nearby. “I’ll be home soon,” he repeated before pressing the off button and handing the cordless to its owner. Kagome, who had heard a great deal of the conversation, was struggling with great difficulty to not sport a blush and spoil that she knew.
He’s so cute…and his mother sounds wonderful, the girl thought, a smile curving on her features. He’s not exactly Hojo-kun, but he wouldn’t bore me to death either.
She’s not as talkative and annoying as I thought she would be. That still doesn’t explain the odd scent that I pick up when I’m around her though… Inuyasha inhaled once again, as deeply as he could manage without drawing attention to himself. It wasn’t so much of a smell, as it was a tingling in his sinuses. It was a sensation that reminded him of a weak static jolt after touching a charged metal, except it was situated in his nose. Dad would know what it was, he thought forlornly, wishing he could even be half the demon his father was. But, that was the problem. He was half the demon his father had been. Even Sesshoumaru would probably know.
And that’s when it hit him. Could would his elder half brotreplreply to a letter, or phone call, or would he be snubbed, and the letter destroyed by Sesshoumaru’s acidic poison claws.
“Kagome…” he began, drawing nearer to her. “Do you have…a boyfriend?” he asked, golden orbs focused entirely on her.
Kagome thought her insides would melt under the scrutinizing stare that he gave her. It was so intense, and serious that she could feel her knees almost buckling, and legs quivering. “N…no.”
Inuyasha prepared himself for a slap, because no words came to mind for what he wished to ask her. Instead of speaking any further, he bridged the remainder of the gap between them, placing one hand against Kagome’s hip, fingers resting on leather and bare, smooth skin. She was mesmerized by his eyes, and their bright amber hue, down to the very last moment until his lips touched hers.
Actions are definitely better than words, Kagome thought as their kiss continued, uninterrupted by the slap Inuyasha expected.
More coming soon
