Chapter 5
"There," Kagome stepped back from Eri and admired her reflection in the full-length
mirror. "All done."
"I look perfect, Kagome." She turned her head to the side and patted the back of her head.
"Thanks so much for coming in early to help me get ready. How do you do it?"
"It's just hair," she shrugged.
"But it's perfect," she said. "I look just like one of those women in those paintings."
Kagome smiled. "You could pass for a princess," she nodded. "I've never seen a more
beautiful bride."
Eri laughed. "I bet that's just what you said to Ayumi."
"I did," she nodded.
She swatted her shoulder. "You're terrible, Kagome."
She sat down in the high-back chair in the bridal prep area and sighed. It had taken her
over an hour to get Eri's hair in just the right shape. She had such thin hair that didn't want to do
anything, so she decided to leave the back down and upsweep the top into a chignon with
flowing tendrils. The smell of all the hairspray she'd used still hung heavily in the air.
"So it's just a matter of time, now," Eri said. "I'm going to be Mrs. Tomei Yamaguchi."
Kagome smiled and nodded. "Yeah. The two of you will be very happy. I have a good
sense about these sorts of things."
She glanced over her shoulder at her. "And I noticed you brought your gentleman friend
with you–wink, wink."
"Yeah, he came," she said. "It took some heavy convincing on my part, but he came."
"Well, who knows?" she said. "Tonight could be your lucky night. Maybe he'll take a
hint and make an honest woman out of you."
She laughed to herself. "I'm the reason I'm not so honest," she said. "If InuYasha had his
way, we would've been married YEARS ago."
She spun on her heels, her jaw dropped. "Kagome!"
"What!"
"What's the hold up, then?"
"I have to finish school first."
"Since when?" she asked.
"Since he's very big on family and would want to start one the instant the ring was on my
finger."
"Well, is there something wrong with that?"
"No," she shook her head. "I want a family just as much as he does. It's just not
convenient right now."
"Convenient?" she raised an eyebrow.
"I don't wanna be one of those absentee parents," she said. "You know, squeeze out a
kid, dump him in Daddy's lap and say, 'I'll see you when my shift's over.' Whenever that is."
Eri scoffed. "Well, didn't you choose the wrong profession for that? Doctor's have very
hectic schedules."
"I know," she said.
"You just should've went to business school like the rest of us, and you'd be done already.
You could be working in some nice office, saving a little money, making nice with that fellow of
yours."
"He'd like that," she nodded.
"Then why don't you do that? Forget about being a doctor and become a business major.
You could even work from home; perfect for raising a family."
She shook her head. "I couldn't do that to my mom. She's determined to have a doctor in
the family."
"What about Sota?" she asked.
"Sota's still in middle school," she laughed.
"Weren't you in middle school when your mom announced her grand plans for you?"
She shrugged. "I can't even remember."
"I'm pretty sure you were. And if I remember correctly, you complained about all the
work you were gonna have to do. And let's face it, Kagome. Academics has never been one of
your strong suits."
"I was a good student," she said.
"You were a PASSING student," she argued.
"Passing is good."
"Passing is good when you're in middle school, when you're in high school. Passing in
college just isn't good enough. Don't you have to have a 'B' average to stay in the pre-med
program?"
"Yeah," she nodded.
"Do you HAVE a 'B' average?"
She shook her head.
"Kagome . . ."
"I just got finished with my finals, though. They could pull everything way up."
"If you did well on them," she said.
"Yeah," she nodded. "IF I did well on them."
"I say stop torturing yourself and tell your mom the truth. Tell her you're just not cut out
to be a doctor. Tell her you wanna get married and start a family before you're too old and senile
to appreciate them."
"But she's done so much for me, Eri. I don't want her to think I'm ungrateful. Plus, I do
have a knack for helping people. I can work wonders with a first aid kit and some herbal
remedies."
"So volunteer for the hospital in your spare time."
"Eri . . ."
"You know I'm right about this, Kagome. Stop wasting your time and your mother's
money on something you know that's not gonna happen."
She shook her head. "But she'll be so disappointed . . ."
"YOU’RE what matters," she insisted. "Every mother wants to see her daughter happy.
Do you think my mother cares that Tomei is so much older than me? No. She cares that he
makes me happy, and we love each other very much."
"My mom wants me to be happy, too, but--"
"You're not happy, Kagome. The last time I saw you with such a hollow smile was when
you and your gentleman friend were having problems."
Kagome lowered her eyes and bit her lower lip.
"Kagome?" she knelt down in front of her. "You two aren't having problems, are you?"
She swiped a tear from the corner of her eye. "Look at me," she laughed. "The wedding
hasn't even started, and you've already got me crying."
"Kagome . . . what is it? Tell me what's wrong."
"It's nothing," she said.
"Bullshit. You don't cry over nothing."
She drew in a deep breath and pushed it out. "He wants to go home for the holidays."
"Home?" she asked. "Oh, that's right. He's a foreigner, isn't he?"
"Yeah," she nodded. "Something like that. But, anyway, I'm afraid he won't wanna
come back with me after our visit."
"Why would you think something like that?"
"Because he said so."
Eri frowned. "And you're still going to go with him?"
"The trip was MY idea," she said. "He doesn't know many people over here, and there's
not much work he's suited for . . . And he thinks he's always in my way and . . ." She shook her
head. "I don't know what I'll do if he doesn't come back with me. I mean, I don't begrudge him
his happiness, but . . ."
"He really said he wants to leave you?"
"Well . . . he doesn't wanna leave me; he just doesn't wanna stay here . . . He says he's
okay being here, but I know he's not. And after I brought up the visit, he said he didn't wanna go
to visit; he wanted to go to stay."
Eri squeezed her hands. "Well, is it very bad where he's from? Is it someplace you
wouldn't mind staying?"
She shrugged. "It's not so bad," she said. "Fresh air, clean water, a nice landscape. I've
got friends there; he's got friends there. I could probably even work there."
"Hmmm . . . Sounds like you've been giving his words some serious consideration."
"Guilty as charged," she said.
"It also doesn't sound like such a bad place. I mean, if worst came to worst, and he said
he wanted to stay, couldn't you just stay with him?"
She smiled to herself. "I've thought about that," she said. "On more than one occasion."
"And?" she asked.
"I'd miss you guys too much. I don't think I could bear it."
Eri stood. "But if it were us or him?" she asked. "Missing us versus missing him–which
could you recover from faster?"
"I couldn't choose," she said.
"If Tomei said we had to move out of country, so he could be happy and we could have a
better life together . . . as much as I love you and the other girls, and as much as I love my
family, I'd tell you all goodbye and go where my heart leads me."
"Eri . . ."
She shrugged. "That's just what I'd do . . . and in middle school, I know you would've
done the same thing."
She shook her head. "I've worried my mom so much already . . ."
"Our mothers never stop worrying about us," Eri said. "No matter what we do or where
we go, we're constantly on their minds." She smiled to herself. "My mom always tells me that.
It's one of the burdens of parenthood, she says. A burden I'll be taking on pretty soon."
"Pretty soon?" Kagome raised an eyebrow.
She waved her away, blushing a vivid shade of pink. "Not before nine months," she
laughed. "We both decided it would be better if we waited till after for . . . you know."
Kagome laughed. "I know," she teased. "But do YOU know?"
She smacked her shoulder. "I will after tonight–wink, wink."
They continued to laugh till they were joined by their other friends and Eri's mother.
They took assorted pictures, made sordid jokes, and thoroughly enjoyed the time they spent
together. The wedding went off without a hitch, and Kagome couldn't remember the last time
she'd seen InuYasha in such high spirits.
Maybe Eri did have the right idea . . .
