The warm spring sun finally pushed away the last remnants of one of the worst winters Kagome had encountered. She kept reminding herself that it probably only seemed so bad because all the luxuries she was used to required electricity. The rest of the group seemed unfazed by the weather. Ginta, Hakaku, and a few other of Koga’s wolves had joined them. It was a good thing too since the group had been attacked more then twice by Naraku’s minions. Luckily they had a pregnant Demoness with them. Hayai seemed more vicious because of it. Koga had tried to convince her to stay out of fights… that is, until her saw her in action. More than once had Hayai sent the demons home in multiple pieces or not at all.
The group traveled up into the mountains for one very good reason: another month would be added to their trip if they went around. At the summit, they decided to rest. Night was beginning to settle in.
“I can feel the jewel shards.” Kagome looked off into the distance.
“I can smell the stench of Naraku from here.” Inuyasha added, “You may want to protect that pup of yours and stay behind.”
Hayai looked at him, “No chance. More of my clan has been killed by that villainous monster.” She recalled the messenger that had brought the news. More than a third of her pride whipped out. Hayai shivered from remembering. Koga put a protective arm around her. He and Inuyasha looked at each other. A moment of perfect understanding passed between the two men. They were all walking in to a death trap and if they had it their way, Kagome and Hayai would stay out of it. Hell, Inuyasha would tie Kagome to a tree if it meant keeping her out of danger.
“Oh!” Hayai exclaimed suddenly. They all looked at her startled. The wolves moved closer to make sure she was okay. “Baby kicked.” She explained.
“So the baby will be born soon?” Shippou climbed on to her lap. He put his ear to Hayai’s stomach. Shippou heard the heart beating. Then, out of nowhere, something solid hit him, sending him to the ground.
“Oh!” She huffed again, “Are you okay?” She asked Shippou. Stiffly, he nodded.
“We should stay here for the night. We can make our way down tomorrow.” Inuyasha said.
“How long is full term for a tiger?” Asked Sango.
“Six months. I still have another three months to go.” Hayai put a hand to her growing bully. It was still a bit small. The wolves seemed pleased that Koga had chosen a demon for is mate, although they still liked Kagome. The late evening found the travelers discussing battle tactics and storming Naraku’s castle. Shippou was the first asleep followed by his bed, Kagome, and Hayai. The rest drifted off after all was said and done.
The next morning found Inuyasha, Miroku, and Sango schlepping down the mountain groggily. Koga joined their ranks as well but was too stubborn to admit it. He kept taunting Inuyasha about staying behind and being slow. Kagome had to sit him three times to keep him from killing Koga. At the bottom, Sango put a hand on Miroku's arm, eyes wide.
“This is one of the most powerful demonic auras I’ve ever felt.” She slipped her hand into the pouch that held her jewel shards. The fragments slipped around her fingers as she played with them a bit. She sat on Kilala’s back with Hayai. The demoness had at leased agreed to rid on the great cat while traveling.
A cloud that looked like smog stood off in the distance. Kagome knew the smog was miasma and it meant Naraku would be waiting there for them. Her stomach tied in knots from the very inclining that they all might not come out alive. Kagome turned and looked at the others. They had all come to far to lose. They couldn't lose.
Inuyasha took Kagome’s hand. She looked frightened. “What is it?”
“Nothing. Just thinking.” She smiled at him. The day wore on as they walked. Meals were eaten and pack up as quickly as possible. Rests where taken in the same quick manor. When it finally came time to sleep, every one bunkered down and fell asleep as fast as they could manage. Inuyasha stayed awake longer then the rest. He looked at Kagome curled next to him with shippou perched on her side, lightly snoring. *She is my mate*, he realized with a start. Inuyasha knew he loved her, although it was never said. She was what his life had been missing. He remembered what is mother had told him when he was small, * ‘the way you can tell if someone is truly meant to be with you is they make you feel complete.’ She always was a romantic.* he thought. Those where his last thought as he drifted off.
“Inuyasha?” Kagome said shaking him. “Inuyasha.” She said again voice and octave lower. “Inuyasha!” This time he realized it wasn’t Kagome.
“Kikyo? What is it?” He whispered. Kagome shifted a little in her sleep, snuggling closer. Kikyo looked at the girl with utter contempt.
She brought her attention back to him, “You are close to Naraku’s castle. It would be wise to turn back now.”
“Why?”
“Naraku possesses all but your shards of the jewel. He has grown greatly in power.”
“We can take him on. I know we all can defeat Naraku.” Inuyasha stated. Kikyo look at Hayai curled around Koga with her not- very- pregnant belly, Shippou and Kagome.
“Your group isn’t powerful enough to take on Naraku. Not and win.”
“Get out of here before the others wake up.” Inuyasha growled. Kikyo stood suddenly and marched off towards the miasma. Inuyasha grumbled as he rested his head on Kagome’s and fell back asleep.
Inuyasha was visibly troubled in the morning as they packed up to head off. Kagome took his hand and gave it a little squeeze. She smiled at him. Inuyasha smiled back. They all set out towards Naraku. Kanna was the first to challenge them. Kagome easily defeated her with a sacred arrow. Next was a wave of lesser demons. They were whipped out with one swing of the Tetsusaiga. Kagura stood at the foot of the hill that lead to the castle.
“You’re still alive I see. I wish to help you.”
“Why would you do a thing like that?” Koga asked they woman who slaughtered his worriers.
“I, like you, hate Naraku. I wish only to be free of him. All of my wrong doings were his command.” Kagura explained.
“It might be a trap.” Whispered one of the wolves.
Inuyasha grinned, but it wasn’t happy, “If it is, then we can kill her.” Kagura nodded her agreement and turned to go back up the hill. The rest followed. She told them about the secret way into the castle ‘I cannot go in with you. To do so would mean my death’ . Once in side they where met by Kikyo.
“You would have done well to head my warning.” She shot and arrow, not at Inuyasha, but Kagome. He ran in front of her and pushed off the arrow. When it hit the sword and the wind scar, the arrow disappeared.
“Impressive.” Kikyo said shooting another arrow. This one was aimed for Hayai. One of the wolves moved to protect her. The arrow exploded a hole in his back. He looked at Hayai with wide eyes as his life drained from them. The wolf held on to her cloak as he hit the ground. Hayai looked at the miko with hatred.
“You will pay with your life for that!” She rushed at Kikyo, claws extended. Kikyo tried to fire another arrow, but was too slow. Hayai pushed her to the ground with claws in the woman's stomach. The miko screamed and tried to pull the demoness off her. The more she fought, the deeper in Hayai’s claws sank. The demoness withdrew and tore at Kikyo’s neck.
“You’ve made it through my barriers have you?” Naraku said, stepping out of the shadow. He looked at Kikyo’s decapitated body. “Inuyasha, doesn’t it hurt the see your Kikyo destroyed like this?” He motioned to the demoness.
“My Kikyo died fifty years ago.” Inuyasha said simply. Granted he wasn’t watching Hayai, but he wasn’t stopping her either. It was Kagome who shot an arrow at Naraku. The arrow took him low in the stomach. The back lash of miasma sent her flying into the far wall. Then the wolves rushed him. Of the five that run at him, two now lay unmoving. Ginta and Hakaku stood behind Koga. Sango threw her boomerang. It flew back and hit her sending her to the floor where she lay motionless. Miroku tried to use a spell scroll, but nothing was strong enough. Koga tried at Naraku again but, Naraku slashed at him, slicing his left thigh to the bone. Inuyasha unsheathed the tetsusaiga. He watched for the attack that defeated his father’s greatest enemy, The backlash wave.
Naraku snickered at Inuyasha, “It seems that all your comrades have befallen, Inuyasha.” With that, he sent a wave of miasma at him. Inuyasha used the back lash and sent the wave back at Naraku.
Kagome opened her eyes to see Hayai looking down at her. She felt a terrible pain in her right fore arm. When she tried to wiggle her fingers the wouldn’t budge.
“Hayai, I’ve broken my arm.”
“If that is all the has happened to you, consider yourself lucky.” She motioned to the bloodied wolves. Kagome looked from them to Miroku cradling the still unconscious Sango, to Ginta and Hakaku dressing Koga’s wound. Her eyes finally landed on Inuyasha who was enveloped in the miasma. She stood and started to go to him when a blinding blue light flooded the room. Kagome shielded her eyes with her good arm. When the light faded, Inuyasha stood facing a pile of broken wood, tattered cloth and torn paper. Kagome stood beside him, hardly able to believe that Naraku was dead. Not just dead either, obliterated. She walked forward and pick up the almost complete jewel. The she reached into her bag and grabbed out her shards.
“Inuyasha, your shards, please?” Inuyasha’s eyes focused on her.
“That murderous bastard is dead.” He half smiled at her, then noticed her arm, “What’s wrong?”
“It’s broken, but nothing I can’t handle. Now the shards please.” Kagome held out her left hand. Inuyasha fished them out of his shirt and dropped them into her palm. Next she moved to Miroku and Hayai. Hayai was more then happy to give Kagome back the shard. Miroku was too busy with Sango take notice of Kagome’s question.
“Let’s stay here until everyone regains consciousness.” Kagome sat down against the wall. She could move her fingers now but every time she did, the break hurt more. Inuyasha picked up a small piece of wood and a longish length of cloth. He bandaged Kagome’s arm.
“Do you still want to become a full demon?” She asked.
“I… no. I want to live with you as my mate.” Inuyasha looked at her. Kagome smiled and hugged him with her good arm. She leaned back and gave him a kiss.
Sango groaned and opened her eyes. Miroku’s concerned face was the first thing she focused on.
“Naraku! What…”
Miroku took her hand, “He’s dead now. Your comrades have been avenged.”
She smiled then exclaimed, “Your hand!” Miroku cautiously looked at the wind tunnel. Where it had once been now sat a diagonal scar the ran nearly from index finger the heal of his palm. Unable to contain his happiness, Miroku leaned down and kissed Sango square on the mouth. He snapped back suddenly waiting her to slap him.
She narrowed her eyes at him and said, “You only get one Monk!”
“I knew I was wearing you down.”
“If I had enough strength, I’d have slapped you!” She tried to sit up. The pain in her side made it practically impossible. She fell back in pain. Miroku soothed Sango as he gently stroked her black hair. After she fell asleep, Miroku what with Inuyasha to get fire wood. They found Shippou outside with Kilala. Shippou looked at Miroku’s right hand, now unbound by the prayer beads.
“Did you do it? Did you defeat Naraku?” Shippou looked up at them with his big green eyes.
“The curse has been lifted, hasn’t it?” Miroku beamed down at him. Shippou raced forward and hugged his leg.
“Where’s Kagome?”
“She’s inside with the others. Go on in.” Inuyasha said. He and Miroku continued on their way and Shippou when in side. He froze at the site of the dead and injured people.
“Kagome are you okay?!” Asked a worried Shippou.
“I’ll be fine. It's just broken.” She smiled. Shippou sat next to her. Inuyasha and Miroku returned with wood and food. As Inuyasha made the fire Kagome spoke up.
“I have most of the jewel now. I just need all the pieces you all still have.” She held the jewel out to show every one. Miroku presented his in a cloth pouch. Sango very stiffly pulled hers out from the secret pocket on her kamono tie.
“No. I found my shards fair and square. I’m not giving them up now.” Koga said. He crossed his arms and glared at Kagome. Hayai took his hand and gave it a little pleading squeeze.
Koga sighed, “Ginta, use your knife and retrieve my jewel shards.” He closed his eyes. The sharp pain ran up his spine as Ginta took them shards out of Koga’s legs. He started to hand them to her still covered in blood and stopped. Ginta popped the shards in his mouth and rolled them on his tongue, sucking off the blood.
“Here ya’go.” He said, proudly dropping the still wet shards into Kagome’s hand. She smiled and resisted the urge to wipe her hand on her skirt. She took a deep breath and placed, ever so gently, her broken arm over the jewel shards. Kagome closed her eyes and could still see the shard perfectly. She imagined the jewel whole like when it came out of her side, the first time she saw it. She felt the little pieces get absorbed back in to the bigger one. Kagome watched it all through her mind’s eyes. All the force that crackled along her skin. She felt the power pull at her broken bone. Kagome cried out from the pain. Then she realized the power had fixed it. She sent the power out to Koga who echoed her cries and Sango who echoed his. When Kagome opened her eyes ever one stared at her like she sprouted an ugly green head. Koga’s leg injuries where completely healed and Sango was stretching like she were stiff all over. The jewel lay perfectly in the center of Kagome’s hand. She closed her fist around it. and closed her eyes again. The jewel glowed pure. So pure the other’s had to look away. The light died down and they saw the jewel’s illumination not in Kagome’s, but Inuyasha's chest. Then the orb died completely.
“What did you do?” Inuyasha looked at Kagome dumb founded.
“I put the jewel where I knew it would be the most protected. By myself and it’s bearer.” Explained Kagome.
Back at Kaede's village, Miroku had just finished picking up the dishes from dinner when Sango walked in carrying fire wood. The days following their return had been filled with joyous celebration. Even the wolves and Tigers come.
“Where should I put these?” asked Sango
“Over in the corner.” Miroku motioned to the bare spot to the far left of the door. Sango kneeled and neatly stacked the six pieces. She could feel Miroku starring at her.
“What?” She looked at him accusingly.
“I was just admiring the wonderful stacking job you did. That's all.” He turned to finish straightening up. Sango sat for a moment.
“Do you want help?” She offered.
“Sango, What is your opinion of me?” Miroku sat down on the wood floor. Sango thought for a moment.
“I think you’re the biggest womanizer I’ve ever met.” Miroku closed his eyes and gave a small smile, “But I also think you have a good heart and are loyal to your friends. You’re always there when we need you.” Sango sat next to him. The fire illuminated the entire room and cast their shadows dancing on the walls. Sango reached over Miroku to grab a piece of wood she had dropped on the way in. Miroku leaned back a little for her. Sango arched her brow as she realized he was ‘inconspicuously’ glancing down her shirt. She leaned forward so their faces where inches away and laughed at him “Will you give it a rest.” Miroku replied, “What? I wasn’t doing anything.”
“Two words. Horn. Dog.” she leaned back. Miroku took her hand. Sango looked at their grasped hands and looked him in the eye.
“What?” Sango gentle asked.
“Sango... will you bear my children?” Sango grabbed the stray piece of wood and moved to smack him but then tossed it in the fire, “Is their any woman in this country that you haven’t asked that question to?”
“Not that I know of. Why? Can you think of anyone else that I could ask?”
Sango just glared at him and said, ”You have a one tracked mind don’t you?” Shrugging back, Miroku gave her hands a gentle squeeze and looked at her evenly again.
“Maybe, but how many women do you think I’ve asked that seriously to?”
She looked at him, “What do you mean?”
Miroku smiled and responded, “ Well, I’ve asked so many women, not many people take me seriously.”
Sango’s sweat beaded. “Gee, you’d think.”
“Honestly, Sango, One day I will need an heir. I’m looking for a strong women who will be able to handle herself.” He laid a gentle kiss on her knuckles. Sango looked at him for a space of heart beats. “You’re serious, aren’t you?”
“Of course.” Miroku said.
“You don’t need an heir any more.” Sango replied.
“I do too. I want a child that can follow in my noble foot steps.”
“How many women have you given that speech to?”
“Only you.” He slowly brought her hand to his cheek. Her skin was so soft, it felt like warm silk.
Sango pulled her hand away gently, “You lie so much I can’t tell what is true.“
“Sango, you have my solemn oath that I speak the truth.” Miroku moved his arms around Sango’s shoulders. She leaned into him. It was true that she desired him, but she could never trust that he wouldn’t up and leave when she was sleeping. And yet… she moved so her face was cradled in his neck… the smell of his skin was hypnotic. Miroku laid a gentle kiss on Sango’s forehead. He could see her having his child. He could see raising that child with her. Gently, he kissed her. Sango tensed in his arms them molded herself to him. For some reason, She trusted the bastard. Miroku laid her down on the ground. He had wanted her for too long, loved her for too long. There was so much he wanted to teach. Miroku knew there was only one way to make her completely believe. He leaned down and kissed her again, allowing Sango to perceive the weight of his feeling. She reacted the way he dreamed she would, throwing her arms around his neck. Reluctantly, He pulled back.
“Is something wrong?” She asked. Miroku moved Sango so she was on her side with her back to his front.
“Lets just lay like this.” He smelled her hair and sighed with happiness. The two fell asleep curled around each other. They looked so peaceful the others just left them alone.
After thought:
Miroku and Sango got married. {True act of devotion? Miroku didn’t push for ::Ahem:: Lemons until their wedding night} Number one is on the way. Possibly the same for Kagome, as well but she’s not holding her breath. Inuyasha and Kagome have their own cottage now. She completely gave up on school. Kaede is teaching her to be a full priestess. Hayai gave birth two three beautiful demons, two girls one boy. the tigers moved to the caves with the wolves. Shippou has a crush on one of the tiger girls. Naraku gone and the jewel safe, lives can get back to normal.
