Ill Wind
It was still long before sunrise when the feeling of someone watching him pulled him from sleep, and Sesshomaru opened his eyes to find the woman- Ros?- looking at him. He glared at her, his arm tightening around Inuyasha almost unconsciously, the fall of his sleeve almost completely covering his brother's body.
When she noticed his gaze upon her she spread her hands placatingly and stepped back, lowering her head. His eyes narrowed but his glare softened; as uncultured as her brother was, she displayed surprising refinement. She knew she was not welcome and had invaded anyway; she placed herself at his mercy. Perhaps she had nowhere else she wished to go. He could smell fear on her, not of him, and a determination to see herself through the mission she set for herself.
Inuyasha stirred in his arms, and Sesshomaru looked down into his brother's blinking eyes. Inuyasha smiled at him sleepily, then seemed to realize Ros' presence. His ears flattened as he glared at her and a strange change seemed to fall over his features. Sesshomaru growled at Ros softly, and under the brothers' combined rejection she retreated further and turned away. Sesshomaru pushed himself into a sitting position and took the opportunity to look down at Inuyasha. He felt a strange wonder at his actions of the previous day; he'd never done anything like that before. Surrender his desire to another's needs? Feh. But with Inuyasha... It was different, everything was different...
His brother stirred, uncomfortable under his stare, and sat up, reaching for his clothes. Sesshomaru reached out spontaneously and took Inuyasha's chin in his hand. Inuyasha tried to pull out of the grip and glared at Sesshomaru uneasily. The demon released him and turned away, also rising to gather his discarded clothing.
Fully dressed, Sesshomaru slipped in between the trees, going to where Ros stood. "What do you want?" he said when he stood right behind her. She started; the movement almost imperceptible, but he saw it.
She turned to face him. "What I said before. To help you in any way I can."
"As I told your brother, I do not require your assistance." He turned away.
"Wait," she said. "There's more. Things he didn't tell you; things he doesn't know..." She trailed off tantalizingly, and he turned back to look at her, not sure why he did. She might try to sound like she had something to offer him, but it was more probable that she was just trying to hook his interest and that if he gave it to her she would deliver nothing. But there was something about her... Physically there was nothing especially outstanding about her. She was slight of form, almost fragile looking; she had identified herself as a warrior and Sesshomaru imagined that she often took her opponents by surprise when they saw her and assumed her weak. She had long white hair and pale yellow eyes, and her body was indeed that of a well-disciplined fighter, hard with muscle. Perhaps her most defining characteristic was the determination that echoed from her eyes. Or perhaps the way she absolutely reeked of her brother, so much so that it was hard to discern her own scent. Sesshomaru had seen many who were determined, and many who were better fighters or more attractive and definitely better smelling, so what was it about this woman that drew him?
He didn't know. So he did what he usually did with things that annoyed him and which he could not explain; he pulled indifference around him like a cloak, and attempted to anger them into revealing more about what they were. "Nothing you can say will interest me. Leave." She looked about to protest, but she set her jaw and, amazingly, left. Sesshomaru frowned. Damn; he'd hoped she'd let something slip in an effort to convince him. But he soon dismissed her from his thoughts and turned back to Inuyasha.
Inuyasha... Speaking of annoying, confusing things... But one thing he knew, that he had finally decided to admit to himself, was that he liked having Inuyasha with him. He did not want his brother to leave.
"What did she want?" Inuyasha asked irritably when the demon returned to him. Sesshomaru looked at him; there was something odd about the half breed's actions, something he could tell stemmed from the encounter with Chernobog.
"Nothing of importance," he responded impassively, and Inuyasha bristled unaccountably at this answer. Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes at his brother. "Something ails you," he observed.
Inuyasha turned away. "You ail me, so fuck off," he offered and started to walk away.
Sesshomaru shot his hand out and grabbed his brother by the wrist. "Inuyasha," he started, but Inuyasha twisted his arm and broke Sesshomaru's grip so quickly and effortlessly that they both just stared at each other for a moment.
"Inuyasha," Sesshomaru said again, but Inuyasha flinched away from him and bared his teeth.
"What do you want from me?!" he demanded, the confusion in his voice quickly turning into anger. "You think you can just do whatever you want and I'll take it cause I have to?! Well fuck you!!" He turned to run away and Sesshomaru jumped on his, pinning him to the ground.
Inuyasha turned on him with a fury Sesshomaru had never seen in him before, and as they fought he actually found himself pressed until he was entirely on the defensive. Eyes blazing with sudden anger at this, he reached out and grabbed Inuyasha by the throat, poison seeping from under his fingernails. Inuyasha snarled at him and lashed out blindly. His fingers crooked, his clawed fingernails caught Sesshomaru squarely across the face. Instinctively, Sesshomaru closed his eyes and turned away slightly; such an action probably saved his sight- Inuyasha's claws ripped into his temple and came down across his cheek, narrowly missing his eye, and tore down across his jaw.
Shock made Sesshomaru release his grip and Inuyasha sprang away. The half breed stood for a moment, staring at his brother's bloodied face in stunned astonishment, and then turned and ran.
"Inuyasha!" Sesshomaru called, angrily, but his brother had vanished into the forest.
--
Inuyasha was running.
What had just happened? He didn't know, except that it scared him, so he ran...
He'd slept, he'd woken... Sesshomaru had been with him, had given him... Sesshomaru had held him, comforted him...
He'd repaid this with anger, pain. Why?
Why was he running? He didn't run away from things...
But he had to now. He had to get away from there... Never again would anyone love him, never trust him, touch him like that...
Never... He wasn't worth it...
And suddenly a shape dropped down, directly in his path, and he looked up as he came to a halt to avoid hitting it.
It was Ros and she held out a hand to him.
--
Sesshomaru glared furiously at his reflection in the water of a stream. The damage wasn't as bad as it had first looked. It only bled like half his face was going to fall off; once the blood was washed away he could see that the cuts were deep only at the top and became bare scratches when they crossed over his jawbone. They were clean and would heal smoothly, and that wasn't really what had ever bothered him about what had happened.
Inuyasha. What was wrong with him? He had never just... blown up like that before. And he'd been acting strange since... Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes. Chernobog. He'd done something to Inuyasha. Sesshomaru's lips lifted in an automatic snarl, and his torn flesh reminded him of its existence with a ripple of pain. The pain only fueled his anger, and he turned away from the water, intent on finding that interloping peasant and removing his head from his body...
"Something vexes you."
Sesshomaru froze at the voice and shot a narrow-eyed glare toward the direction it was coming from. A demon stood there, barely definable in the shadows that surrounded him. Sesshomaru knew him, though he had never seen the demon before, had never even heard of him before yesterday.
"Baikal," he said flatly.
Baikal grinned, the action pulling thin flesh back from jagged, pointed teeth. His eyes were set deep in his head and his nose was a slender prominent fixture on his face. His head was bare and his skin was wrinkled and grey. "Well, am I right? You know I did come all this way just to see you." He took a step forward. "You might be more polite."
Sesshomaru started to snarl at the intruder, but stopped. "Yes," he replied, reining in his emotions and turning a thoughtful, slightly bored look on Baikal- though thoughtful was the last thing he wanted to be at the moment. "Did you travel all this way just to inquire as to my state of irritation?"
"No, I will confess I did not. Though," his grin widened, giving his head the appearance of a partially decayed skull, "it was not such a long journey."
"Of course not," Sesshomaru responded, a few extraneous pieces of information clicking together in his mind. "When you return," he continued, his tone strangely civil, "you will tell Chernobog that the next time I lay eyes on him I will kill him."
"Oh, so cocky?" Baikal grinned. "Giving orders, and to your betters. And assuming such things! Well, little lamed dog, I will pass on your message because it amuses me to watch Chernobog squirm." His eyes bored into Sesshomaru, and he hissed, "Yes very cocky. But I hear that you prefer things that way, hmm?"
Sesshomaru's eyes flared, but he kept a rein on his temper. "I see Chernobog learned everything he knows about manners from you. Was he a good student? Or did he require additional tutelage?"
Baikal's lips lifted slightly, the skin around his eyes tightening, and Sesshomaru congratulated himself on a hit. "You are very good," Baikal said admiringly. "But it will not help you. While I might have lost the advantage of having a spy in your camp, knowing that the alliance scam wasn't good enough to fool you does give me the opportunity to make all my future schemes even better. And while I could just kill you... where would the fun be in that?" Throwing Sesshomaru a grin over his shoulder, he turned and disappeared.
Sesshomaru turned away from where the demon had been standing, thoughts suddenly filling his mind, driving out all other concerns. Baikal had just revealed more than he probably intended, and the supposed advantage he had cited was completely false. Baikal assumed Sesshomaru had refused the alliance with Chernobog because he had seen through the facade and realized that Chernobog was working for Baikal and had only proposed the alliance as a diversionary tactic; he didn't know Sesshomaru had refused Chernobog simply because he found the demon repellant. This was both an advantage and a disadvantage. And, Sesshomaru thought, he had sensed something... He had known that Chernobog feared something. He had assumed that something to be Baikal, but now he thought... It was himself. His eyes narrowed. Chernobog feared that Sesshomaru would prove a greater opponent than Baikal knew. Perhaps this had motivated the attempted skullduggery. Though this presented the problem of how Chernobog and Baikal had come to such vastly different opinions of Sesshomaru's strength. And, he thought, perhaps it was Chernobog's fear that had provoked his verbal attack of Inuyasha.
Inuyasha.
Where was Inuyasha?
