She placed the bag against the trash post at the front and turned back toward the veranda.
"Hey, Kagome!" Yutaka's voice called to her from further down the street.
She squinted into the morning sun, shading her eyes with a hand and waiting for him to run up to her. He grinned broadly and slowed his pace.
"Wow. You look tons better than yesterday!"
She stared, eyes narrowed as she truly looked at him for the first time. His sandy hair caught the light as he smiled down at her, hazel eyes filled with happy laughter.
His eyes... she mused, looking him up and down in consideration.
Then it hit her like a bolt of lightning.
"Shippou?!" she gasped as she leaned closer, staring at him with wide eyes.
She grabbed him by the shoulders, pulling him into a hug as she gushed her happiness.
"Sesshoumaru said it was possible," she squealed, taking his face in her hands and looking him over. "Sesshoumaru - I mean Amaru. Kiken Amaru. Funny name, right? But oh my gosh! He said there was still a chance I could find you all. That even if you were gone, your souls would always find their way back. Well... not all of you... but you know what I mean! Oh, Shippou! I can't believe it!"
"Um... Kagome?" he laughed as she ran circles around him, poking and prodding here and there. "Are you ok?"
She stopped, her head to the side as she stared at his pants. "No... no tail...?"
He gave her an odd look.
"Oh..." she squeaked, face burning red as she looked down at her feet. "You must think I'm crazy... but you look like a friend of mine..."
He smiled. "Nah. It's alright. It's better than nothing. I didn't think you'd ever start talking to me!"
She smiled sheepishly. "Yeah... about that... I'm sorry I haven't been the best neighbor since we got here."
"No problem, Kagome." He grinned, scratching his head as he spoke. "I'm glad you're doing ok. Now maybe we can hang out more... you think? There aren't too many kids out here in the country. But there's a fair coming in just under a month, and there'll be people from all over the place there. It'll be my sister's birthday around that time so if you want, we can add you to our party group. It'll be great, I promise."
She smiled, her eyes wandering past him to the line of trees stretching beyond the back porch.
"Well... do you mind if I bring a friend?" she asked shyly, her cheeks warming.

Her fingers petted his cheek gently, smoothing his hair back from his face as she smiled up at him the way she'd done for years and years passed. Her skin was warm beneath his touch, the blush belying the boldness of her advances. She leaned toward him slowly, pausing slightly as though to gauge his reaction, before brushing her lips against his.
"Rin..."
He hadn't meant to startle her. He could smell the wave of alarm that ran through her as she drew away abruptly, eyes downcast. But even this new scent could do little to mask the other more potent aroma drifting upward from her delicate skin.
"I've upset you..." she whispered. "I beg your forgiveness, my lord."
Twelve years she'd been at his side. He'd watched her grow and change, silently and grudgingly thanking Tenseiga for this strangely enlightening chance to experience the enigma that was human development. He'd known pride in seeing her learn to read and write, bewilderment in the inordinately redolent "women's trouble" years, and astonishment in the transitions from child to young lady. He'd felt protectiveness in her curiosity in males of her kind, and sorrow at the idea of "giving her away" to some insignificant ningen peasant. He'd watched her admiration of him turn to appreciation, to wonder, then to longing. And even then, her sudden bold, and not altogether unwanted, action had caught him by surprise.
"There is nothing to forgive," he murmured, refusing to acknowledge the sharp spike of hope in her scent.
His Rin desired him. At the tender age of seventeen, she looked to him now not as a guardian or educator. Not as lord and master. And surely not as something as simple as a friend. Within her eyes glowed the makings of what could only be defined as lust in its most innocent form. The scent of her arousal hung thickly in the air, striking at his sensibility with surprising force, and he was startled to soon find that it was growing achingly hard to ignore or cast aside.
"You are a mere 17 years to my own 400 and more," he allowed, stifling the voice within him that raged against this spineless and irrevocably feeble show of emotion as he reached to take her chin, turning her face toward him. "The numbers are of no consequence. You are of age to choose whom to bestow such an honor upon. I will not deny that it would bring me great pleasure to accept such a gift as this. But it cannot, and will not, be."
The scent of tears, like the frigid mist cast ashore by rolling ocean waves, stung his senses mercilessly. "I have upset you, then..."
She made to draw away from his touch, but he cupped her cheek lightly, willing her with heart and mind to look at him. Eyes brimming, she looked to him for a rebuttal, but knew there would be none.
"There are reasons beyond your understanding for why I will not discuss this with you again, Rin," he pushed on, his own admittance unsettling him. "You must be aware. Time holds no power over the life of this Sesshoumaru. It is inevitable that the eventual passing of days will take you away from me... And I cannot, as a man nor as youkai, bring myself to steal away as precious a thing as your humanity."
She smiled at him through a veil of tears, the brightness reaching her eyes as she pressed his hand to her heated skin. "My lord is honorable," she breathed. "You've been everything and everyone I've ever needed you to be. You've given me so much, and asked for so very little. I don't deserve to be anything more to you than a lowly, miserable ningen girl... But you give me even that exception. And for it, I swear to love you until the day I die... Sesshoumaru..."
He allowed her to embrace him, and to see him in such a light. He allowed her to think of him, and to dream of him in this aspect that was wholly forbidden, yet undeniably desirable in their own separate way. And for years to come, despite the words unspoken, she continued to love him as she had promised.
Time eventually did take her away from him. And he mourned the loss for 200 years, allowing the world to pass him by as he strode aimlessly through each day. Until the chance meeting with a woman whose scent held such power over him, he could not help but to unearth the memories of a little girl that changed his heart, mind, and soul with the touch of her hand. And, shedding the cloak of lonely regret and bitter self-loathing, he opened himself to the world once again.
She would have been proud.

"Dinner's ready!" Kagome called, placing the bowl of rice at the center of the table.
She looked over the meal she'd prepared and smiled broadly, giving herself a mental pat on the back. Sugoi! Just like mom always makes.
The thumping of feet on the staircase told her that Souta was on his way. A second pair echoed his and her mother's voice could be heard nearing the dining room area.
"Hey! Smells good, Sis!"
"Ah!" Ms.Higurashi gasped. "Oh my! You did all this yourself?"
Her mother caught her in a hug, giving her a soft kiss on the cheek. "It looks delicious, sweetheart."
They sat at the table, Kagome fidgeting as they prepared to eat. She looked around the table, at her mother's smiling face and her brother's silly grin. She sighed as her eyes landed on the empty chair next to hers, shaking herself from her reverie, and clearing her throat.
"Um... I invited someone to dinner with us," she rushed in headfirst. May as well get this over with.... "They're kinda late, though..."
Chopsticks halfway raised to her lips, her mother paused. "A guest?"
A light knock sounded at the door and she jumped. "Erm... that must be them now... I'll get it!"
She ran through the house, nearly tripping over a sleeping Buyo as she skidded to a halt at the door. Taking a deep breath and straightening her skirt, she turned the knob and smiled broadly.
"You made it," she breathed. "I didn't think you'd actually come... It's getting pretty late."
Amaru smiled. "I had to pick up a few things. I hope you don't mind."
He stepped to the side, giving her a clear view of the two figures striding up the walkway to the veranda. One figure stood taller than her own five foot six; the other, quite obviously a younger child, skipped along as they drew near. Her heart lurched painfully in her chest as something familiar came over her. Amaru gave no explanation as she looked up into his eyes. He merely stood, features calm and cool as the others stepped onto the porch and into the light.
"Kagome?" her mother called from behind her, and she turned to find her family waiting for her a few feet away.
Souta held Buyo at a lopsided angle in his arms, Ms.Higurashi rested a gentle hand on his shoulder, and all three looked on in interest.
"Mom," she began, but was cut off but a gruff, yet strikingly soothing voice.
"Long time no see, Kagome..."
