The note was written in an old type
of scripture kanji. Miroku grasped it
from Inuyasha’s hand and read what he could make out aloud to the group.
Inuyasha
It
is with great pride I announce my presence into your pathetic existence. I thought that taking the young Miko that you
seem to hold so dear would be the perfect start. You do not yet know me, but you surely will
you pathetic Hanyou… Just to be forewarned…. Naraku is no longer your biggest
worry. Your dear Miko will be of great
use to me in my own quest for the rest of the Shikon no tama and with her in
tow, I will finally be in possession of the sacred jewel. There is nothing you can do to stop me… but I
would find it quite fun if you tried.
Haisurah
Inuyasha was silent. Haisurah?
Who the hell was that? He couldn't help but fear for Kagome’s life. What if something happened to her? To the baby… he stood full of apprehension
and worry from the thoughts that filled his mind. Miroku picked up on it immediately.
“Inuyasha, I'm sure that both
Kagome and your child will be fine…” He
put his hand to the hanyou’s shoulder and hung his head. Inuyasha spun around slowly as if in a state
of shock and looked sharply, not non-temperamental at him. Causing Miroku to look up from the spot in
which he had found in the dirt.
“How… how did you know that Kagome
was…” Miroku looked down again towards
Sango’s feet, and Inuyasha diverted his eyes to her. She sympathetically looked at him with tears
in her eyes. She spoke up in almost a
whisper.
“I told
him. Inuyasha I'm sorry, it kind of
slipped but… it was just a shock, I thought that I … that I was pregnant.” She looked down and tried to hold back her
tears, trying to keep her legs from caving beneath her. “Oh Kami…” she sobbed as she buried her face
within Miroku’s shoulder. “We need to
find her before…” she stopped and surrendered to Miroku’s arms wrapping around
her. Inuyasha turned away, clenching the
sheath of the Tetsusaiga and letting out a growl. It was clear what he had to do. I have
to find her… now, He thought to himself.
“I have to
go now… either you come with… or I go alone.
Either way I am leaving now.” He
seemed to have already made up his mind about looking for her on his own. Sango’s tears stopped and she looked up at
Miroku through clouded eyes, worried.
Inuyasha had already left.
“Damnit. We need to move fast Sango… Inuyasha might do
something rash if we aren’t there to stop him… to help him.” He grabbed her arm and pulled her towards
Kirara. The demon flared up to her
flamed self and waited for them to get settled and Sango to give her the cue to
go after Inuyasha. Just as they were
about to take off, Shippou came running outside.
“Hey! Where are you going without me Sango, Miroku!!! Where is
Inuyasha?” He was running after
them. Sango called down to him as he
attempted to transform so that he could fly and follow.
“Shippou…
please stay here with Kaede… we need you to keep watch.” She felt Miroku’s staff position itself
across her stomach, holding her to him protectively.
“Keep watch
for what!” he screamed, obviously frustrated and stomping his little feet into
the dirt.
“Explanations
later Shippou!” Miroku called down and they were soon out of site.
Scoping out
Inuyasha had not been easy, but if it had not been for the red of his Fire Rat
clothing, it could very well have been impossible. Sango spotted him first as he came to a stop
in the middle of the wooded area.
“Down there
Miroku!” She called. “Lower now Kirara... down there.” They landed in front of Inuyasha, and Miroku
didn’t hesitate to notice the odd look of bewilderment that had invited itself
on Inuyasha’s face.
“What is it
Inuyasha?” He paced and looked around,
not once making any eye contact with the monk.
“I don’t
smell her… her scent… it ends…” Finally
he stopped walking and looked at Miroku and Sango. “Here.”
His eyes looked as if they were pleading. Miroku found himself confused at the way that
Inuyasha was acting, but it was understandable.
Within the past week, he had almost been killed, confessed his true
feelings to and slept with Kagome, found out she was going to have his child,
and lost them both to a demon that no one had ever heard of who claimed to be
of greater worry than Naraku.
“Inuyasha,
what do you think that Haisurah meant by Naraku not being of worry? I do recall something stated in that note
about the rest of the jewel… you
don’t think…”
“That that
bitch has the jewel and got rid of Naraku before any of us could get to
him? I damn well do fucking think
that. And now, she has my Kagome and…”
he paused and his voice reduced to a whisper. “Our child…
I know she is in danger… I know it and, I can’t fucking find her!” He was screaming. At that point he had fallen to his knees and
had begun to dig his nails into the soil.
He was at his wits end. What the hell am I going to do! Those
were the only thoughts that ran through his mind. Nothing else formed, not even a plan. Miroku had lowered himself beside Inuyasha in
the dirt and tried to comfort him as well as he could.
“Are you
sure that the scent stops there Inuyasha?”
Sango asked him with curiosity in her voice. What
was Sango up to? Miroku perked up
and she gave him a glance that suggested that perhaps she did have an idea of
where Kagome was. He smirked at her and
slowly rose.
“What is it
that you are thinking my dearest?” She
smirked back at him but then caught Inuyasha's hopeful yet irritated glare and
she cleared her throat, slowly Sango made her way over to the kneeling
hanyou.
“Inuyasha,
if the scent ends here and we have not been able to sense the presence of
another demon, perhaps it is because her scent; both Haisurah and Kagome has
been covered by the scent of the land.”
Sango grabbed Inuyasha’s hands that were in the dirt. “You say that her trail ends right here…does
this soil seem any different than any of the surrounding soil to you?” Her
knowing smile stirred a curiosity in both men, causing them to simultaneously investigate
the earth below. Miroku let out a gasp
realizing that the soil in which Inuyasha had dug into was slightly newer than
the rest. Inuyasha bent to the soil,
sniffing out the dirt like a puppy. His
ears perked suddenly and his crouched position became tense. He began to dig.
“She’s
here… she’s here somewhere… below, I can smell her… HELP ME DIG!” His holler made Sango cringe and she was sure
that Miroku had also felt the passion that was withheld within his rage. They hurriedly rushed to assist
Inuyasha. As they dug deeper, the ground
seemed to lose its density. “Damnit!” He cried as he fisted the dirt. Miroku and Sango stopped burrowing and
sensitively threw Inuyasha a look. “I
was so sure that I could smell her
scent…” what is wrong with me? I can’t smell her anymore? Am I getting weak? Inuyasha slammed his fist into the ground
again and the earth began to shake.
Before anyone could question it, they all found themselves falling into
an underground tunnel. It was dark and
the fall wasn’t as short as one would have hoped but, no one had been
hurt. Miroku broke Sango’s fall and
suddenly her face turned red. Without
fail, the Hentai Houshi’s hand had found its way onto her backside; Kirara
mewed at him and grinned her teeth.
Inuyasha rose grasping Sango’s hand as she prepared to strike her
lecherous Houshi. Kagome. Her scent very strongly engulfed the air, she was
there. Miroku got to his feet and rubbed
at his back, that fall had not been as harmless as he thought. They both noticed the expression on
Inuyasha's face. Sango was the first to
speak.
“What is it
Inuyasha?” Her face was writhed with
concern; she seemed to have completely forgotten about the punishment that
Miroku hadn’t yet endured from his wandering hands. Inuyasha lightly touched Miroku’s arm and the
Houshi turned to face his hanyou friend.
“Do you
sense her still Inuyasha?” he pondered, offering his own concern and
worry. A nod was all that was given and
they quietly started to make their way through the strange and dark
tunnel. Where’s that little runt when ya need him. Inuyasha couldn’t help but think as he relied
strictly on her scent filling his nose.
It was too simply too dark to find his way through any other way without
proper lighting.
“Perhaps Kirara could light our
way?” Sango presented in a slightly
audible murmur. Again Kirara mewed, but
Inuyasha let out a very hesitant sigh.
Then, his voice barely a whisper, he spoke.
“Too risky, I can sense Haisurah
close, her scent seems to be overlapping Kagome’s… we can’t risk being seen…
we’ll have to deal through the darkness.”
Sango, the normally tough Taijiya, clung to Miroku's robe afraid that if
a single finger slipped… she would be left behind. Miroku grabbed for her hand and brought her
close.
“Do not be frightened my dearest,
Inuyasha… well, he seems to know what he’s doing… haphazardly… but he seems to… we just have to trust his
judgment.” He looked at her through the
cover of darkness. There was a glimmer
in her eyes that he could still see through the shadows that surrounded, it
reassured even his own weary somewhat terror stricken disposition. She let out a sigh as they continued to walk,
holding each other tightly to the other.
Suddenly Inuyasha stopped and placed his hand firmly on the handle of
his Tetsusaiga, he was anticipating something that was closely up ahead of
them; a low quiet growl rumbled in his throat, his nose inhaled the air briskly.
“This way and stay quiet… I hear
voices… I can smell her.” His hand went
to the hilt of his Tetsusaiga and he quietly made his way down the darkened
tunnel; Miroku and Sango closely in tow.
The darkness began to fade into a yellow light as they neared the end of
the tunnel, going into what could only be assumed as; the cave. There was a small cry for help that escaped
the vast emptiness, causing Inuyasha to stop short. His ears were twitching.
“Kagome…” he whispered. There was a shrill laugh that filled the dark. Sango tightened her hold on Miroku as she
looked into his eyes fearfully. They all
knew who had been calling for help.
~*~
Kagome struggled in the bindings
that seized her, holding her small body tightly to what she could only assume
was some sort of barrage. Slowly her
teary vision began to clear at the mirth of her captor.
“Kagome… I think it only fair that
I properly introduce myself… after
all my dear, you will be seeing a lot of me.
Or should I say… you will be seeing a lot for me.” She let out a shrill
laugh. Kagome’s muscles tensed at the
sound and she spoke through a clenched jaw.
“What is the reason for this? Who
are you!” Tears were viciously treading
down her cheeks, blurring her vision yet again.
“Why did you kidnap me? I swear I
am no use to you, just let me go.”
Kagome was getting desperate, all she could think about was their child,
and her voice had a pleading tone.
Haisurah brought her hand to the terrified girl’s face, brushing her
hair from her eyes.
“Dear child that is what you are
after all… a child… I am Haisurah. When
Naraku created me, he misjudged just how much more powerful I was than
he.” Kagome squirmed and turned her head
away at Haisurah’s touch. “Oh, do not
fret. I promise that I will not bring
any harm to you or that… that abomination you carry within you. I will however have my fun.” As she ended her statement, Haisurah placed
her palm on Kagome’s stomach and closed her eyes. There was a surge of power as Kagome felt a
sharp pang shoot throughout her entire body, making her want to double over as
the source of it came from her abdomen; her restraints however, would not
permit such a thing. Kagome screamed out
in agony. She silently prayed for
Inuyasha.
~*~
Inuyasha sprinted into a run at the
affliction that filled her scream. He
forgot about the three behind him and just ran.
He was terrified of what that scream may have meant, his thoughts were
centered only to retrieving her from this unknown enemy. He was in such a daze of worry that he didn't
even attempt to stay quiet as he stumbled into an opening lit dimly by candles,
what he saw nearly wretched his heart.
Kagome was against a wall, her hands were bound; her face contorted in
pain. In front of her there stood a
woman. She was slender from what he
could tell, although her clothes did well to hide her figure. Her long golden curls flowed down her back
almost gracefully as she tilted her head backward to laugh at the pain she was
inflicting upon the young Miko.
Inuyasha’s vision became a blur as he pulled his Tetsusaiga, preparing
to charge at the demon woman that stood before him.
~*~
Kagome’s pain was becoming
unbearable, she squeezed her eyes shut and bit her teeth together
excruciatingly; as if to place her pain anywhere but the womb of her unborn
child.
“Open your eyes!” Haisurah screamed angrily at the girl,
shooting another surge of power throughout Kagome’s entire body. “I want to see your pain young Miko.” Kagome screamed; her eyes flying open from
both the pain and the sound of Haisurah’s wicked delight. Through Kagome’s blurred crimson sight, her
heart jumped at the image of the angry hanyou that stood almost directly behind
Haisurah. He drew his sword as Haisurah
brought her head forward again and let out a sigh.
“I see we have some company… well
well well… Inuyasha I presume?” She
turned quickly to face the armed hanyou.
“Let her go you fucking
bitch!” Inuyasha could feel the demon
blood in him boil as it slowly tried to surface his youkai. Haisurah noticed the spike in his scent and
plastered a smile on her face.
“Well half breed really now, is
there honestly any need to resort to violence?”
Her laughter was starting to piss him off.
“Obviously you thought that there
was … now LET HER GO! Don’t make me
shred your ass to pieces.” A low growl
emanated from his chest as he aimed his Tetsusaiga. She simply laughed at his threat.
“Oh now, that is truly a
laugh. You are going to destroy me?
You, a disgusting half breed think you can defeat me? Now that is a laugh, you do not understand
who you are dealing with do you?” There
was a worrisome amusement held within her tone as she stepped towards
Inuyasha. “Tsk Tsk Inuyasha, really now
let us be realistic. The filthy half
breed that could never defeat Naraku could never
defeat me. For I, Inuyasha, am
indeed stronger than that pathetic hanyou ever was. I am his strongest demon side; he made a
mistake releasing me. And to think, all
because he wanted to be rid of his heart, the one that longed so deeply for the
woman who tended to Onigumo’s wounds, Kikyo was her name? Actually, isn’t she the one that you have
lusted over for so long? The same woman
that Naraku tried to purge from his human feelings seems you were in love with
her as well… I honestly don’t see why you have wasted your time and apparently…
your seed on this girl that I have in
my possession. You don’t even love her…
you, in fact, are in love with another.”
“You’re wrong you evil witch! I loved Kikyo yes… but I am in love with
Kagome… she is everything, my entire heart … now let her go before I destroy
you! Either way I am getting her
back.” Something flickered in her eyes
as she brought her hands together and placed them once more on Kagome’s
stomach. Kagome let out a scream; she
was blinded by pain and no longer had any real knowledge of what was happening
or being said. The only thing that
reassured her mind was that Inuyasha was here.
He came to save her. Haisurah
laughed piercingly as she turned back towards Inuyasha and again put her hands
together. There was a growing blue light
emanating from within the palms.
“You love her… how touching you
despicable half breed… I really don’t understand why such a young and wise Miko
would allow such an atrocity to defile her innocence. She must not be as astute as one would
originally think. Perhaps I should just
kill her right here and now. Her shard
detecting skills are probably not of any use to me now that she carry’s such an
abomination within her… you have probably soiled her powers as well.” Haisurah pulled a small dagger from her
Yutaka and threw it in Kagome’s direction.
The Miko let out an agonizingly piercing howl as it lodged itself within
her lower abdomen. She could feel her
blood pouring out and tried to keep her consciousness from slipping. Inuyasha cried out her name as the dagger hit
Kagome.
“You are going down!” He was losing his humanity, and it was
happening quickly with every passing second; with every idea that Haisurah had
just killed Kagome. He tried to sense
Haisurah’s aura, wind scar wasn’t a possibility. Not with Kagome directly behind her, not in
the constriction of the cave. Finally he
found what he was looking for but Haisurah had already thought of that. With a snicker she threw the blue light from
her hands at the fang of his sword; sending it flying across the floor. Inuyasha had to think fast.
“What are you going to do now? Without the protection and power from that
damn sword of yours? You said you were
going to destroy me… so do it already you half breed! I'm amused at the effort so far, not even a
fucking attack! In case you haven’t noticed, your love doesn’t seem to be
making it through all your time wasting.”
Haisurah walked over to Kagome and pulled the dagger from her, in fact
making the pain and the wound much worse.
She was now bleeding everywhere; the pain was threatening a blackout. There were tears streaming down her cheeks,
but she could no longer feel their hot treads.
“Inu…” Her energy was fading fast. She was losing too much blood. Inuyasha looked over at his lover with fear
as she started to border consciousness, he did the only thing he could think
of.
“Blades of Blood!” He shouted releasing one of his most powerful
attacks. What happened had never
happened before, he watched Haisurah as she slowly fell to the ground she
seemed to be choking for air, but relentlessly it would not come. Inuyasha stood above her momentarily before
she finally stopped struggling and her body vanished. It was then that his thoughts came back to
him. Kagome… he had to help her. He raced to her side and untied her
bindings. The scent of her blood was
overwhelming, and it scared him because there was far too much of it.
“Inu… sha…” She whimpered breathless as she collapsed
against him. He collected her sullenly
and sat on the ground with her in his embrace.
He removed his Haori and wrapped her wound to stop the bleeding.
“Don’t die on me now Kagome… not
now please.” As if on cue, the others
finally entered the cave where the battle had taken place. Sango ran to Inuyasha as soon as she caught
sight of Kagome’s broken body.
“Oh Kami what the hell happened
Inuyasha?” She placed her hand on
Kagome’s forehead.
“Where is Haisurah? Gomen nasai for taking so long… you are much
faster than we are. Is Lady Kagome hurt
badly Inuyasha?” Miroku pulled Sango
back as he sadly looked upon Kagome.
“We need to get her back to Kaede…
she will know what to do.” Inuyasha
gathered her tightly within his embrace, letting her head fall to his shoulder. “Try to keep up; I'm going to go ahead of
you… way ahead.” Inuyasha sprinted. He, in even his own opinion, had never run
that fast in his entire life. It was
easier to find his way back to the surface than he thought it would be, and he
took to the forest. Silently praying as
the wind whipped his face, drying the tears as they fell. He looked down upon her sleeping face
momentarily and felt his heart, stomach, lurch.
Kami Sama please be alright
Kagome… I need you to be alright…
~*~
Inuyasha wouldn’t let any of the
others enter the hut as Kaede helped him tend to Kagome’s wounds. Shippou was hurt, but he understood that he
needed to do as he was asked; even if he hadn’t a clue what was happening to
Kagome. She still hadn’t opened her eyes
to gaze upon him and he was growing increasingly worried.
“Kaede you old hag what is going
on! Is she going to be alright? Is Kagome going to be okay?” Kaede let out a sigh, unintentionally making
his stance slightly tenser.
“Inuyasha there is a great amount
of blood, I am going to need you to please… please go and wait outside with the
others as I further examine her.” Her
face was stern and held great concern.
“Why can’t I just stay Kaede? I could… I could help?” He was trying to hide tears, but Kaede saw
through it and sighed again.
“Iie Inuyasha, ye must wait
outside… I do not think that she would want you here for the type of
examinations I will have to perform on her; it’s not something that friends
should be bearing witness to…” He
blushed deeply when Kaede called him Kagome’s friend. She was probably the only one besides the
runt who didn't know, and Inuyasha figured that on some level he knew that they
had gone past the point of friendship.
He bowed his head respectfully and glanced over at his pale faced lover
once more before leaving. I love you Kagome… please don’t die on me
now…
~*~
Sango was
fidgeting beside Miroku, nervously glaring into the fire. They were all silent in anticipation of news
on Kagome as Inuyasha sat at the base of a tree; deep in thought. They all knew what was on his mind. Everyone knew that he was beating himself up
inside at the truth that he could very well lose them both. Miroku grabbed Sango’s hands bringing her out
of her daze. She laid her head on his
shoulder and squeezed his hand tightly; their eyes were closed and they prayed
silently for their fading friend.
Four hours passed before Kaede
walked out of the hut. Nightfall had
been rapidly falling and the moon brightly shone in the clear darkening sky
above. Inuyasha had started to pace in
front of the fire, but when he spotted the old Miko he raced to her side. Her face was surly and had a hint of
confusion. Everyone else at the camp
site looked up upon her arrival, questions in their eyes.
“Kagome has lost a lot of blood,
but she should be fine with some sleep and proper herbs… there is however just
one thing that puzzled me throughout the duration of my examinations,” She
turned to Inuyasha who’s eyes were very wide.
“Inuyasha, may I please speak with ye privately?” He knew it was more of a demand than a
request so he followed her back to the hut where Kagome was now sleeping. Inuyasha began to get uneasy at her posture,
he had a feeling of what her inquisition was, but he was terrified to know if
his child had survived or not.
“Nani…? What is it Kaede?” Inuyasha managed to choke out.
“Inuyasha, do you know what it
means to be a virgin?” He uttered a
small ‘yes’ and looked down blushing.
“Well, in women the hymen is a major part of being a maiden however…
there are other things that could break the hymen… but it doesn’t mean that
they have lost their virginity. I can
see how her hymen may have come to be broken, what with all the fighting and
such, but there is tearing and bruising along the walls of her cervix as
well.” Inuyasha’s face shot up quickly
to examine her expression; his own filled with fear and genuine concern. Looking down again he closed his eyes tightly
at the thought that had crossed his mind.
“Did I hurt her?” It was barely a whisper but still heard
nonetheless.
“Just as I suspected,” She let out
a long sigh and brought her hand to the hanyou’s chin, forcing his saddened
gaze to her. “No dear child, ye did not
bring her harm, it is normal. So I
assume that it is safe to say that you were aware of her expectancy as
well?” He simply nodded.
“Kaede is… is our… I mean is she
still…” he stammered out, unable to find his words. She dropped her hand from his face and slowly,
sadly, looked down at the dirt below her feet.
Inuyasha couldn't control the emotions that overtook him, she didn't
even have to say a word; her reaction to his half assed question said it all. He felt the tears swell up painfully,
threatening in his eyes but as if in a state of shock, they refused to
fall.
“Inuyasha, the dagger pierced some
of her most vital life giving organs and because of that there was a large
amount of bleeding… the hemorrhage, and the weapon… Inuyasha there was nothing
I could do. Since she was no more than
about a week or so along, there was no way that the child could have lived with
the massive amount of blood Kagome lost.”
Inuyasha fell to his knees. He
should have been embarrassed that Kaede, that anyone was witnessing this moment of weakness… but it mattered
not. She kneeled beside the shaking
hanyou as he covered his face and cried.
After a few moments, he collected himself and wiped his tears. Inuyasha helped the old women to her feet and
muttered an apology for being such a weakling.
She smiled.
“Tis fine child. Do not apologize for the softer part of your
heart; it is not a bad thing that you must be ashamed of. It is what makes you who you are; it is what
drives you to love that beautiful girl over there…” Inuyasha’s gaze drifted over to Kagome. She still looked paler than he had ever seen
before, and she didn't seem to be resting peacefully. She was moaning quietly in agony as she
gently tossed in frustration.
“Inu…Inuyasha… I need you
Inu…” His heart felt clenched at the
sound of pain in her plea for his presence.
“Inuyasha,” Kaede came up behind
him and laid her hand on his broad shoulder.
Her voice became a whisper. “It
is what makes that woman call out your name, and no one else’s. It is what makes her love you with everything
inside her soul.” With that Kaede made
her way to the doorway of the hut. When
she reached the flap she turned slightly.
“I will leave the two of you alone, Inuyasha comfort your love.” Inuyasha couldn't help but blush at her term
of endearment, but he rushed to Kagome’s side.
Again she mumbled.
“Where … are you… Inu… ya…
sha…?” Her voice sounded strangled and
desperate. He grabbed her hand and
placed a kiss on her palm.
“Shhh, Kagome I'm here… right by your
side… please wake up Anata. I need you
to wake up and be here with me.” Slowly
her eyes began to flutter open and her vision came into cloudy focus.
“Ih… Ihnuyassha…? Is that you? Where are you?” She cried, her body starting to squirm in
agony, searching for him. Inuyasha
brought himself to rest beside her on the makeshift mattress coddling her neck
with his nose. His hand reached over to
her cheek and brought her face sideways to gaze into his own. Placing a soft kiss on her temple, he whispered
in her ear.
“I'm here my dearest, right beside
you.” He watched as she painfully tried
to pull her arms around his neck and bring him closer; but he backed away. That was more upsetting than the hurt
coursing through her body, and only made her weep harder. Inuyasha wrapped his arms around her.
“Anata, do not try to move… I’ll
hold you if you promise not to move okay?”
She sniffled and held her tears back as he kissed at the ones that
stained her insipid cheeks. “AiShiteru…
I'm here... Just rest Kagome.” Slowly he stroked her hair, lately that seemed
to help her fall asleep when she was stressed.
He didn’t mind though, he loved the feel of her in his arms. Before long he could feel her body calm as
she fell into a soundless sleep. He let
out a deep sigh of relief that she was still breathing beside him. Trying his hardest to be strong about the
loss of their baby, but he couldn't cry in front of her about it and he knew
that. Somehow, he knew he needed to be
strong for the both of them, he needed to figure out how to tell her… and it
had to be him who did so. A tear slid from the corner of his eye as he
lightly, as not to hurt her, embraced the broken woman lying beside him. Soon he fell into sleep as well. Only there was no peace, just worry and
heartache. This time, however, it was a
different type of heartache… it was a loss that he had never felt before… but
his only real concern and instinct was to protect her. She was his everything… his intended, and he
would do anything to insure that safety.
