The phone line wasn’t working, she’d tried to call Esbet, her mother, even the pizza guy with no luck. “Fantastic” she grumbled, stalking down the hallway. She entered her tiny bathroom, cheery yellow towels peeked back at her. With a sigh, she turned the knobs before the slim tub, watching as the clouds of steam billowed in the chilled air. Outside the thunder boomed and the rain pattered across the rooftops. She had always loved storms, until the desert. Her reserve unit had been activated and she’d gone off to war. Not that it bothered her terribly, people adjusted to the environment they were placed in and life continued. But sometimes it didn’t. Sometimes you just died. And sometimes you were just left broken on some intrinsic level. Even now, two years later, the sound of thunder reminded her of rockets and mortars and distant explosions. Things that had not bothered her overly in that sand covered waste. They bothered her now, in this place that should have been safe and quiet. She sighed and forced herself to stand in front of the wall of windows looking out over the city. Made herself touch the cool glass and feel the percussion of the storm. Told herself that it was nothing more than weather. Nothing here would harm her. And in many ways, she knew that the storm was just the icing on the cake. Her nerves had been ragged since she’d been dropped off in front of her building. She couldn’t shake the feeling that someone, or something was watching her. Hovering over her like a malevolent presence in the shadows. She wanted to blame the two silver haired freaks for all of this. But she couldn’t. Shaken though, she’d been, she’d not felt this ominous foreboding in their company. She shook her head, making her way back to the tub. Her fleece robe hit the floor in a fluffy blue heap as she slid into the water. Hot and silky with her oils, this should do the trick. She leaned back against the edge of the tub, hissing slightly when warm flesh touched cold plastic. She soaked for a long time, until she was shriveled and bright red. She tried the phone again, nothing. And soon after, the lights went out in the growing fury of the storm. Lilian sighed and moved through her home lighting her many candles to hold back the darkness. The pressing feeling of dread grew. She curled on her couch, waiting for the lights to flicker back to life. Her tea kettle was on her stove; thank god she had one of those archaic gas stoves, heating for her tea. Candles surrounding her, she tried to read, but her interest was dragged from the story time and again by the sounds around her. She jolted when the little kettle whistled shrilly and she jumped up to take it off the burner. It was then that she heard it, the tinkling sound of breaking glass. She froze, tense and listening. Over the sounds of the wind and the water, she could hear it. Someone was in her apartment. Moving her way. She pressed herself against the wall, near the pantry. Hands curled into white knuckled fists on the handle of her teapot. If she could just pinpoint the location of the intruder, she could make a break for it, run to a neighbor. Scream her head off until security came. Anything but stand here in the painfully small kitchen. Another small sound, whoever they were they seemed to be systematically checking the rooms. That gave her a small window to slip out. She inched along the wall, and was nearly to the door when she felt the icy prickle of awareness sweep up the back of her neck. She turned to see a large, dark silhouette against the flashing of lightning. She leapt for the door and her attacker leapt at her. Lilian swung the teapot with all her might, turning it upside down when she felt the blow connect. The intruder, howled in painful rage and clawed at his face. Lilian dropped the kettle and ran, tearing at the door, wrenching it open. A vice like grip closed on the back of her neck, dragging her back into the shadows of her apartment, her shrieks lost in the magnitude of the storm. She tore at the thick carpeting as she was dragged along, then flipped herself over, to see her attacker. He was tall, powerfully built. Her first thought was, it was one of them. But then the flash of light illuminated the small space and she saw dark hair. “Who are you?” she demanded, “What are you doing in my house?”. Her attacker snarled. It was an unholy sound and she fell silent. In the light of the candles, she could tell that this was not someone she had ever met before and wished she hadn’t now. His features were probably quite handsome at one point. Now the flesh was bright red and bore angry blisters. She fervently wished for another teapot. The stranger flung her hard against the wall, and lights danced before her eyes at the dizzying crack. “You will not change the destiny I set in motion” he growled at her. Lilian shook her head, trying to clear the fuzz and the pain. “Didn’t plan too, don’t even know what it is”. He growled low in his throat, his eyes taking on an eerie glow, “No. But the dog and the fox, they do. They would stop me if they were able”. Dog and fox? Wait a second, the ones who stole her from the ball? “So what now?” she asked, tensing to spring at him. He might kill her, but she was going to make it very hard on him. He reached to his hip, and she heard the metallic hiss of a blade being drawn. A sword? “Get real pirate boy” she said, “No one uses swords anymore”. The blade pressed beneath her chin, “I beg to differ” he said coldly. She swallowed hard. “I am servant to Delno” he told her, “The harbinger of your death”. The blade was lifted high and she prepared for the blow. She squeezed her eyes shut tightly and the clash of metal on metal echoed around her. She opened her eyes to see two blades interlocked inches from her head. “Get up woman” came a cold baritone voice. She blinked, seeing golden eyes stare down at her. She tried to push herself up, but something that resembled a vine twisted around her, slamming her back to the wall hard. A flash of silver and the vine vanished. “Youko take her away” Sesshoumaru commanded. Youko tore the remnant of the tentacle from her form and lifted her to her feet. She swayed and he swore, swinging her up and over his wide shoulder. He lunged for the tall wall of windows. Lilian looked back to see the blade of her ‘rescuer’ flash brightly and then her attacker slumped to the ground, vanishing into tiny flecks of dust before her eyes. Then the glass around her shattered, and the cold rain was beating on her. They were flying, moving at impossible speeds, until she found herself right back where this madness had started. The library of the silver haired men. Youko dropped her lightly to the floor, slowing her descent with his arms and tail. She had numerous small cuts on her body, bits of glass in her skin and hair. She let him lay her out on the oriental rug and stared at the paneled ceiling. “What is happening to me?” she asked with a whimper. Youko soothed her with soft sounds as his clawed hands began to work the glass shards from her hair. “I told you you’d be safer here”. She blinked and turned her head to look at him, “How did you know?” she asked. Youko sighed and plucked a large bit from her hair. Sesshoumaru strode through the wide door then, “Because we watched after I released you” he told her, “The attack was inevitable, but required”. Her brow furrowed, “Required?”. Youko nodded, “You would not have accepted our help until you understood the risk” he replied. She tried to sit up, her arms stinging from her cuts, “You did this?” she asked in an angry hiss. Sesshoumaru knelt beside her, “Don’t be a fool. If attacking you had been our goal it would have been done long before now. No, that was an agent of Delno”. Lilian lay back on the rug, when Sesshoumaru placed a heavy hand to her shoulder and pushed her down. “Delno?” she asked. He nodded, “Your hunter. The one who does not want your powers to awaken”. Youko had worked the glass from her hair and was now carefully inspecting her wounds. She winced when he pulled a glass shard free. He worked in silence for a very long time, the small pile growing as he did so. “You.. you weren’t lying were you?” she whispered. Sesshoumaru shook his head, “No, we never do. You will remain here until the threat is gone”. She nodded wearily, “How long?” she asked. Youko shrugged, “Until Delno and his cronies are dead”. Sesshoumaru looked at the crimson marring her white flesh. “We should commence the bonding” he said then. Youko nodded, “I agree”. Lilian shook her head, “What’s that?” she asked. Youko met her gaze with soft golden eyes, “It is a link between the three of us. We will know where you are and what is happening at all times. It will also allow us to speak over great distances without words”. Lilian blinked again, “How do you bond?” she asked, afraid of what she would hear. Sesshoumaru eyed her impassively, “Blood, we ingest a small portion of blood”. She blanched, “Blood?”. Youko lifted her hand, “You are already bleeding, so it would be a small matter. She shook her head, “That is so….unsanitary” she told him, “Do you know what kinds of diseases are out there?”. Youko chuckled, “We are demons and so are immune to such things, you ingesting our blood passes this trait to you as well”. She looked doubtful. Sesshoumaru had had enough, “We will bond” he said with grim finality. Youko lifted the woman into a sitting position, and then he carefully leaned forward and lapped a cut on her cheek. Her blood tingled on his tongue, and he closed his lips over the wound. Drawing gently on the liquid of her life. Sesshoumaru tilted her head to the side, lapping at the small cut under her chin, growling softly when she struggled lightly. Their saliva was stinging her wounds. Youko and Sesshoumaru lapped at each visible wound, working their healing saliva into the cuts. They faded and soon vanished completely. “Now you” Youko told her, pricking the pad of his finger with his claw. “Don’t worry, it takes only a small amount”. Sesshoumaru did the same, “Open your mouth” he commanded. Lilian was more than a little surprised that she obeyed. Dark drops met the texture of her tongue and she cried out, flashes of light and images dancing behind her eyes. It felt like liquid fire raced through her body and then it was over and she was laying there, on that expensive carpet, sucking in air. ‘How do you feel?’ She started hearing the voice in her head. ‘Like shit’ she offered silently back. ‘That is to be expected, can you stand?’ She tried to shake her head, but couldn’t move. ‘Don’t think I can do much. Just want to sleep’. ‘Very well’ Sesshoumaru watched her lids flutter and fall, then collected the woman into his arms. He carried her up the stairs to a spare room and settled her on the bed, drawing the coverlet over her. ‘Thank you’. He moved towards the door, “Somehow, this Sesshoumaru doesn’t believe you could be common anything”.
