A/N: Wow! You guys are so wonderful with your
reviews! I am very humbled that you feel
that way about this story (and grateful as well). This chapter is Kagome-centric, next one is
100% Sesshoumaru (you’ll see why at the end).
Last time:
No, oh kami, no, she thought
to herself. First there was the
Incident, then the amusement in his eyes, then the whole flower issue, and now this.
He wasn’t going to let her go. He
wasn’t going to ever let her go.
Sesshoumaru gazed at her with his contented eyes and almost, almost smiled.
Blank: Chapter Five – Tea
After Dinner
Rin and Jaken had both been sent
away, and now the two remaining gazed at each other, sitting in silence in the
dining room. A steaming cup of tea sat
untouched before the miko. The place
before the youkai was still as empty as it had been during dinner.
On the inside, Kagome was a mass of
tumultuous emotions. After her
revelation, barely half an hour ago, she’d kept a wary eye on the
daiyoukai. While part of her heart
melted at the peace, the contentment that she’d seen in his eyes while he was
watching Rin and her together, another part of her was quite positive that she
didn’t want the burden of Sesshoumaru’s attentions.
The Incident simply meant they were
attracted to each other. She’d dealt
with that information, thank you very much.
She knew that attraction didn’t mean that they meant anything to each
other, just that their pheromones clicked.
The miko heaved a mental sigh, realizing that, yet again, she was
thinking in terms that she instinctively knew no one else would
understand. Just who the hell was she,
anyway?
Pushing that thought aside – it’s
not like she’d come up with any answers anyway – she concentrated on the
amusement. That was a whole different
story from attraction, and far more troublesome. He’d enjoyed her company, and the physical
attraction hadn’t had anything to do with it.
He’d enjoyed her company, had even teased her a bit in his very stoic
I’m-a-demon-lord kind of way. Major red
flag.
Then the flower thing – she knew
exactly what he was on about there. It
was partly a play for dominance, one that he knew she wouldn’t protest – not
only because she would look incredibly foolish if she had, but also because it
involved Rin. It had also been a display
of his possessiveness. Red flag number
two.
And then, the contentment. That was too weird. Kagome was honest enough with herself to know
that if she was interested in Sesshoumaru, that expression in his eyes would
have been her undoing. She’d almost been
able to see his little mental fantasy of her surrounded by children, a family
that belonged to him. She might love
Rin, but the miko wasn’t sure she was quite ready to settle down and start
popping out babies. She also had the
feeling that she wasn’t exactly the little wifey type.
It really was amazing how well she
could read his eyes, she decided. It was
also a really good thing that he didn’t know it.
It’s not that she was uninterested in Sesshoumaru. Certainly, she found him attractive. Ok,
that was so the understatement of the
year, she thought. Moving on. He was attractive, intelligent, and she even
liked that he was a bit on the possessive side.
Maybe, maybe she even liked
that he liked to be dominant, though she realized that could get old pretty
fast. She had her own mind, after all,
and she was pretty certain that she didn’t mind speaking it. Ever.
She hadn’t minded so far. But if
he allowed her to be herself and not force her into some predetermined mold,
she could live with the dominance.
He was tender and protective as
well, she’d seen that clearly enough with Rin.
He didn’t coddle, kami forbid he should ever stoop to that, but he was
gentle in his own way. Kagome felt
instinctively that, once someone belonged to him, he was beyond loyal. He had to be to put up with Jaken. She knew that if, if he decided to pursue her seriously and if she gave in to him, nothing would ever harm her again – not if
he had anything to do with it. And she
had the feeling that not much would stand in Sesshoumaru’s way once he had his
mind set on something.
Sesshoumaru was also arrogant,
haughty, cold, domineering, and had the conversation skills of a rock. He had a superiority complex that wouldn’t
quit. She had the sneaking suspicion
that he could be a royal ass. He could also
be downright manipulative; case in point, the Flower Issue.
Kagome had to stifle a smile. So, the Flower Issue had taken on the same
importance as the Incident in her mind, deserving its own capital letters. Well, so be it. Back to what she’d been thinking about
before…
Manipulative. Yes.
She didn’t even put it past him to maneuver her into falling in love
with his ward the way she had. He was
probably the type who would never, ever tell her how he felt – and even if
knowing that a person loved you was enough, sometimes it was still nice to
hear. And if she was brutally honest
with herself, she wasn’t even sure if he was capable of loving. Caring for someone, maybe. Protective of them, definitely. Possessive, oh yeah. Love?
She just didn’t know.
What would life with him truly be
like? She had no idea, and that’s what
scared her. Sure, there would be good
parts (oh yeah, like the sex!) but
there would definitely be bad parts as well.
Although he seemed to have already made his mind up about her, she
wasn’t even close to being able to make her mind up about him. Kami, she didn’t even know what kind of youkai he was!
Which brought up the final
issue. Kagome had bigger fish to fry
than dealing with Sesshoumaru and his strange interest in her. She still didn’t know anything about
herself. Besides her gut feelings
pulling her this way or that and her odd way of thinking that she knew was not
in keeping with anyone else around her, she knew nothing of herself. She couldn’t even recognize her own face! She knew that if she was walking down the
street and saw a woman who looked exactly like her, there would be no
recognition in her. The miko suppressed
a shudder. That was just creepy.
Until she regained her memory and
they dealt with this Naraku fellow, the daiyoukai was simply going to have to
wait. She was certain that by that point
she would be able to make a decision about him, one way or the other. She just needed more time to get to know him.
His deep baritone voice startled
her out of her musings, and she realized with a slight blush that she had been
staring at him.
“It is good that you are eating.”
“Uh…thanks?” she replied.
“You are entirely too thin. Your ribs show, even when you are not
stretched out.”
Kagome blinked, staring at
him. What
the…? Remembrance came with another
blush and she dropped her eyes, looking anywhere but at him. She’d almost forgotten that he’d seen her
naked. She wasn’t about to say anything,
even though she was still embarrassed about it.
No way was she going to cause another Incident.
“Well, Rin is a good cook,” she
said. There. That was suitably neutral.
“I would not know. I do not eat human food,” he answered.
“What do you eat, then?”
“Nothing you would wish to
stomach.”
“Oh.” Gee,
Kagome, now who has the conversation skills of a rock? she thought to
herself.
“Your powers are causing you to
heal at an accelerated rate,” Sesshoumaru continued. “As well, they are no longer blocked, so they
will consume more of your energy than they did before, when you were with
my…half-brother.”
Kagome glanced back up at him. His face was blank (of course), but his eyes were serious. What’s
he on about? she wondered. This was
the longest they’d ever spoken.
“Therefore, you are to eat whenever
you feel the need to. Do not worry about
your figure – your powers will find a balance once you have put on a little
weight, so I doubt you will become fat,” he continued. Almost as an afterthought, he added, “And you
will be more pleasing with more curves.”
Kagome blinked and stared at him, a
blush crawling up her face. Did he just say what I think he just said?
she thought. She replayed the last five
seconds in her mind. Yes, yes he did.
“Look, buddy,” she replied
angrily. “I don’t need you telling me
what I should do. I’ll eat when and what
I want to eat.”
Sesshoumaru nodded. “Is that not what I just said, miko?”
She glared at him, fuming. Technically, that was exactly what he had
just said. How does he make telling me to do what I want to do sound like an
order? she thought. Kagome tried a
different approach.
“My figure isn’t going to help us
defeat Naraku,” she said irritably.
“No,” the daiyoukai agreed. “But your powers will. I was simply assuaging your fear of gaining
too much weight.”
Kagome snorted. He was definitely up to something. “Well, don’t you go worrying about my
curves.”
One eyebrow rose delicately. “This Sesshoumaru is not worried,” he replied,
sounding almost…smug.
The miko heaved a mental sigh. Sesshoumaru
1, Kagome 0, she thought.
To cover her lack of response –
what could she say, anyway? – the miko took a hasty sip of the tea. Luckily, it had cooled to the point that it
didn’t burn her mouth too much, and she hid a grimace. A burned tongue while verbally sparring with
Sesshoumaru was the last thing she needed.
“There is a hot spring nearby,
which I will show to you tomorrow.” Oh, kami, he’s not done speaking? “You may use it, of course, as often as you
wish. I know how you prefer cleanliness.”
Kagome, who’d been dreaming of a
bath earlier in the day, nodded absently before she could stop herself. “Uh…?”
She snapped her mouth shut, disgusted with herself. Why was she having such a problem with
this? Sesshoumaru decided to have a
conversation and she was reduced to inarticulate idiocy.
She tried again. “How do you know that, Sesshoumaru-sama? I was under the impression we weren’t exactly
close before.” Ha! Two complete sentences! Go me!
“You were the only one of your pack
who always smelled pleasant.”
The miko blinked. “You think I smell nice?” she blurted.
Sesshoumaru nodded, once. He’s
big on that, she thought. “Quite,”
he said.
Kagome frowned slightly and worried
her bottom lip with her teeth. How did
she feel about this little revelation?
And what exactly was he trying
to accomplish here? In all honesty, that
was more troubling than the fact that he liked the way she smelled.
“You are not to go alone, however.”
The miko stifled an annoyed
snort. “Excuse me?” she asked.
“So now you have lost your hearing
as well?” he replied with a look that said he knew perfectly well that she had
heard him. Wait, she thought. Did he just tease me again? What is up with this guy?
“Fine, I’ll take Rin,” she
answered, purposefully misinterpreting him.
He gave his single nod. “That would please me,” he said. She rolled her eyes. “However, Rin is no protection. You are to go nowhere without either Jaken,
Ah Un or myself present. Is this clear?”
“I think I can take care of
myself,” she said hotly. Of course, she
was lying – all evidence to the contrary pointed to big nasty somethings squeezing her until she lost
her memory, but she wasn’t about to concede that little point.
Both of his eyebrows rose. Ooo,
Kagome thought, look at what I can make
him do!
“You, miko, are a magnet for
trouble,” the daiyoukai replied. “For
all that my half-brother promised to protect you, you…”
Sesshoumaru trailed off abruptly,
and her eyes snapped up to his. He
hadn’t meant to say that. He betrayed no
expression but it was clear in his eyes.
He hadn’t meant to say that.
Kagome stared at him for a few
moments before she asked, the name feeling foreign on her tongue, “He…Inuyasha
promised to…protect me?”
He sat unresponsive, and if it
hadn’t been for the slightest whisper of silk that moved as he breathed, the
miko would almost think Sesshoumaru was a statue. He
hadn’t meant to say that, she thought.
Why? He didn’t answer, didn’t move, as if the
words would be erased from the air by his perfect stillness.
More silent moments passed before
another thought occurred to her, and suddenly she knew why. It was clear in his eyes – he knew the
instant she had this thought. It was a
terrible thought, horrific, one that she wished she could forget as soon as she
thought it, but instead it clamored louder and louder, reverberating through
her skull. Against her will, she voiced
it, the words ripping out of her and leaving her soul raw and bloody.
“He died for me, didn’t he?”
The daiyoukai didn’t answer her,
but he didn’t have to. For the first
time, she cursed his eyes – the truth swirled in them, plain for her to see.
“Answer me, Sesshoumaru,” Kagome
whispered, honorifics forgotten. “He died for me.”
Finally, finally he nodded. Once.
Tears sprang to her eyes as a
great, shuddering sob wracked her. She
didn’t want this! She didn’t want any of it! She didn’t want this demon to be interested
in her in whatever way he was interested, she didn’t want to be torn apart by
her attraction to him, she didn’t want his damn brother to have sacrificed
himself to save her. All she really
wanted was to be able to look at her reflection and not be frightened of her
soulful, unknowable eyes.
“I can’t even remember him!” Kagome
screamed. “He loved me enough to die for
me, and there’s nothing of him in me! Nothing!”
In an instant he was on her, again
so quickly that she didn’t even see him move.
She was cradled in his one arm, pulled up tightly against his armor,
bound in an iron embrace. She flailed
against him, scratching at his face with her dull, human fingernails, leaving
red welts that healed instantly. He was
making a rumbling noise deep in his chest and was nuzzling her hair softly, but
somehow that only made it worse. He was
trying to comfort her, and in that instant, she hated him for it.
“Let me go!” Kagome shrieked.
Sesshoumaru didn’t answer, just
drew her closer to him, if that was possible.
Her anger crystallized in her chest to a tight, controlled rage. Without thought, she placed her hands on his
shoulders and unleashed herself effortlessly.
Torrents of pink purifying energy spilled from her, blasting away the
fabric of his kimono, searing into his flesh.
The daiyoukai was thrown backwards away from her, and landed in an
undignified heap on the ground almost a meter away.
For a few moments, Kagome felt
savagely triumphant. As she stared at
his unmoving form, her rage buoyed her up, keeping her from remembering why she
was so angry in the first place. She had
beaten the smug bastard!
And then the guilt crashed into
her.

A/N: So…er…trust me, I was pretty
surprised at the ending of this one. Bad
muse! Bad! But now we’re stuck with it so we’ll see what
happens next. Heh. Chapter 6 is about 90% finished.
And, hey, the poor girl is under a
lot of stress.
To dendy: Hopefully you didn’t find
Kagome to be too superwomany at the end of this chapter. I intentionally unlocked her potential (yes,
there is a reason, all will be revealed in time, muaha!) so she is utilizing
her power more in this fic, but she’s not all-powerful by any means (not
wussified either). =D
All of you guys seriously make me
blush with your praises. Again, thank
you, thank you, thank you! I will do my
very best to do right by you! =D
