Chapter Three: Never Go
Back
Mrs. Higurashi gave a sigh as she grasped
her daughters’ hands within her own. This was one of the hardest things
she had ever had to do, but ultimately she knew that she had no choice. If
things were to go as they were supposed to she had do this, had to, there was
no choice. If she did not do this... who knew what would become of history or
what the repercussions would be to the modern day era. Movement at the corner
of her vision caught her attention and she knew that Sota was there. He stepped
forward looking at her, then Kagome and then hard to the East. His meaning was
clear to her. She had run out of time. She began to slightly panic, she had
thought that she had more time, just a little while longer.
“Kagome,
you must go back. You must go back to the feudal era and not come back here.
No. Do not argue with me.” She halted her daughters protest before it
started. “There is no time for arguments, you must listen to me and do as
I say.” Mrs. Higurashi released her daughters’ hands only to cup
the sides of her face, boring her eyes into those of her daughters, trying with
all her might to convey without words her feelings and the seriousness of the
matter.
“But
momma, why? You’re scaring me. Why hasn’t anyone told me what is
going on? Why am I being left in the dark? Tell me momma. I don’t want to
leave you guys, not like this.” Kagome was begging for answers with all
her might but her mother didn’t seem to hear her.
“I
can not give you the answers that you seek Kagome. I can only say that you must
go! It is not safe for you here or for the Shikon shards. There are demons that
lurk in the modern world still, and they have come in search of the long lost
Shikon jewel. The power draws them here, even as we speak. You must go!”
Mrs. Higurashi crushed her daughter to her. She never wanted to let her go. She
wanted to keep her here, with her, forever safe. But she knew better. To keep
her here with the Shikon shards would be far more dangerous than sending her
back. Images of the last year flew through her mind. So much had
happened…
“You
promised to do as I asked of you Kagome, and I will make a promise too…
that you will see me again; although it may not be for a very long time. Trust
me and do as I ask of you of this once this more, please, do not question
me.” She released her daughter from her grip and watched as her son
embraced his sister with all his being.
Kagome
felt defeated, she was not sure what was going on, but she had promised her
mother to do as she asked and now she knew she must follow through with that
promise. “I love you Sota, please take care of them.” She whispered
as she pulled away and started to turn towards the back of the shrine. “I
feel them coming, will you be alright once I am gone with the Shikon
shards?” Kagome asked hurriedly as she ran and grabbed her things. Sota
nodded as she glanced at him.
“We’ll
be fine once the jewel is out of reach. They will loose interest in this place
and look elsewhere, and those who do not I will deal with.” Sota said as
he opened the back door for Kagome.
Kagome
turned and rushed at her mother. “I love you momma. I love you. I love
you. I love you. I am going to miss you guys so terribly much, tell grandpa I
love him too, give him kisses and hugs for me!” She said as she pulled
away and ran through the door Sota held open… and then bounced back
through the door and onto her butt. “Ouch!” Kagome cried out as she
glared through the door and into yellow golden eyes…
Sesshomaru
narrowed his eyes on the miko before him. “Miko, do you make it a habit
of not watching where you are going?”
Kagome
huffed. “I thought you left already, what are you still doing
here?!”
“This
Sesshomaru has tried to leave already. It seems the well will not work for me
alone. I have been waiting for you by the well. Surely you have sensed that we
are not going to be alone for much longer.” He glanced at Kagome who was
dusting herself off and trying once more for the door.
“Yes,
I am very much aware of the approaching oni, which is why I am on my out, or
would be if you would but move your carcass!” Kagome snapped as she tried
yet again to walk around Sesshomaru, who was standing in the middle of the
doorway blocking it entirely.
Sesshomaru
looked at the miko before him. She was behaving strangely, but given what he
had just heard, he was not all too surprised. He looked at Mrs. Higurashi while
he continued to stay in the doorway, despite the miko before him, who seemed to
think touching him at her leisure and pushing at him did not carry consequences
towards those who choose to touch him so liberally. His inner beast was
beginning to really react to the close contact of the miko, on many levels, all
of which he was not prepared to act on.
“You
say she must leave, that the jewel is in more danger here than in feudal Japan.
You have told her not to return… ever, and yet you promise her that you
will see her again… There is much more that you have hidden from the
miko, than you have let on.” Sesshomaru inwardly snarled at his inner
beast to shut up then grabbed the miko by her shoulders physically moving her,
a foot away from him. “Do not touch this Sesshomaru again!” He
snapped out at her.
“Well,
if you would get out of the doorway, I would not have to!” She fired back
and made to push at him once again. “Move it bucko, I gotta get out of
here. I am only placing them all in greater danger with my presence and those
Shikon shards!” She gritted through clenched teeth. Her head was buzzing,
her heart was cracking and her stomach was in such a tight knot that it hurt
horribly, but all she could think of at that instant, was getting the Shikon
shards away from her home. The furthest and fastest method that she could think
of was the feudal era… through the well, never to return.
Sesshomaru
had questions of his own that he wanted answered, but the miko was right. He
could sense even more oni heading their way. He glanced at her mother and
brother, and noted that the boy had started to take a defensive stand and was
beginning to unleash small waves of spiritual energy, warning the lesser oni to
stay away. “You have much to answer to, but it seems as though right now
is not the time.” With that he grabbed the miko around the waist, holding
her there with his good arm while he ran with his demon speed to the well.
He
threw a glance to his left and then his right, catching glimpses of the demons
that were starting to enter the shrine grounds. As he reached the well, he felt
a barrier that rivaled that of the mikos’ around his castle, being placed
around the household and knew that the boy was strong, perhaps stronger than
the miko. Or rather, would be stronger than the miko, when he was fully grown
and trained. He mentally made a note to look out for the
‘Higurashi’ name. It would be interesting to see from whom they
stemmed.
Kagome
sank to the ground as Sesshomaru released her, having landed outside the well,
once again in the feudal era. Her body began to shake as sobs began to pour
forth. “I can never go back, never go back…” could be faintly
heard between the gulps of air and the sobs escaping from within her. Her heart
was being torn apart. Her emotional pain was so strong that she could actually
feel it physically. Somehow she knew that she would never be the same from then
on. In the back of her mind she knew that she had changed.
No
longer was she the same innocent, go happy, bold girl anymore. She was still
bold and she knew deep down that she would be happy again, but now something
else had been raised to the top, to forever mingle there with the rest of her,
while her innocence had taken a back seat.
She
was angry and broken. The constant battling over the years and the hectic pace
of the last week had taken its toll. She was no longer naive, that part of her
had been ripped from her grasp. She had been lied to and deceived for what she
deemed as the last time. No longer would she sit on the sidelines and just go
with the flow of things.
No
one would cross her without feeling her own wrath returned in full force.
Realizing all of this only made her cry all the more. She cried for herself,
for her own pain. She saw what she had lost and gained in return and new she
had been given the short end of the stick.
She
was an angel on the edge of clouds, so close to forever loosing her faith and
taking the eternal plunge into hell. Her soul was tired, reflecting her anger
and torment… Then there were hands. Soft gentle hands that promised
protection and possibly love, were wrapping them selves around her knees’
as well as her back. Gently lifting her up and cradling her against solid
warmth. The edges of the clouds were receding and she could feel herself slowly
calming. Could feel that she was slowly being swept away from her past and
further forward into her future.
Sesshomaru
stood where he landed upon returning to the feudal era, and merely watched as
the miko sank to the ground. He watched as her body was wracked with sobs and
listened to her cries of pain as she sobbed of never going back. He stood there
and battled with his inner beast, refusing to give in. He refused to comfort
the distraught miko. She was not his. He could feel his beast straining to be
free. It took all of his inner strength to keep his beast in check.
Something
was happening; he watched the miko through narrowed eyes. He could feel her
aura weakening and then flaring out ever so slightly. He wondered at what she
was doing, or if she was even aware of her power fluctuations. His lips parted
slightly as he caught a glimpse of her aura and watched as it flickered back
and forth between yellow and grey as more black slowly seeped into it.
Sesshomaru
was shocked into complete stillness as he looked upon the darkening miko. He
looked passed her aura to her and snapped his mouth shut at what he saw. Her
hair was slowly changing color. He could see the ends of her hair taking on a
fiery deep blood red. Her sobbing increased slightly as she clutched at the
ground.
Sesshomaru
was undecided on what he should do. He knew what was happening to the miko. Her
aura and changed appearance were enough for him to see what she was
becoming… a dark miko. His beast did not like what was happening to the
miko. It roared at him to calm the female and stop the progression taking place
before him.
Slowly
so as not to startle the once pure miko, Sesshomaru knelt by her side and
scooped her up into his arms. His beast purred at the close contact with the
female and he found that he too did not mind holding onto her. Pulling her a
bit closer to him while inhaling her scent, he caught a faint trance of spice
that had seeped into her smell. It only enhanced it all the more and he
unconsciously started taking deeper and deeper breaths as he walked on through
the forest with the miko in his arms. He could feel his beast was pleased with
the reaction their touch was having upon the miko. Her aura calmed and her hair
gained back some of the black, but he knew that the ends would remain a fiery
blood red. The wounds that had been inflicted upon her soul would never
disappear. They would grow with her, and be a part of her for eternity.
Inuyasha
had been sitting on top of Keades’ hut for the past hour and a half
wondering where Kagome had gone off to. He knew that she needed space right now
and that he should not go in search of her. Still a nagging feeling had begun
to grow at the back of his head. ‘Where is that wench?’ He thought
to himself as he shifted. He was just standing up from his crouch intending to
check out the well when he caught a faint scent that made him pause. He sniffed
a bit and his eyes widened slightly. ‘Kagome, and tears.’ He
thought to him self as he rushed off in the direction it was coming from.
Inuyasha
sniffed again and caught Sesshomarus’ scent as well. ‘What the heck
happened? Why is he with her and what happened to make her cry?’ Inuyasha
leaped into the air and raced off in the direction of the well. The scent was
stronger in that direction. Inuyasha wasn’t sure what to think at this
point. He still did not completely trust his brother; after all they never
really did have a brotherly relationship. His presence here was merely a truce
between two enemies who shared a common foe.
Inuyasha
halted in the path a few feet away from Sesshomaru. His eyes grew wide slightly
as he took in the scene before him. Distantly he could feel Kouga and Ayame
racing towards them as well. ‘They must have picked up on her tears as
well.’ He thought absentmindedly as his eyes glued onto Kagome. He looked
her over from head to foot before his eyes snapped back to her hair.
Sesshomaru
sensed Inuyasha heading towards them as he kept on walking his sure footed pace
towards the village. He came to a halt as Inuyasha leaped to the ground before
him and looked at the woman in his arms. He could feel the anxiety and
uncertainty that the hanyou was experiencing as he stood there holding the miko
within his arms. He made no move to set the miko down, or to hand her over. He
waited as he watched his half brother look over the miko, waiting to see what
his response would be to her changed appearance and scent. He wandered how long
it would take the Hanyou to notice the slight hint of spice mixed in with her
usual smell.
To
the right he could sense the two wolf leaders heading towards them, as well as
the cat and fox demons coming forward from the left. He was not surprised that
the mikos’ tears would have this kind of response from her companions. He
was aware of her connection to each of them, even before he had decided to
bring Rin to the village.
Inuyasha
took a few steps forwards while looking at his brother, watching for any sign
or a negative reaction. When none came he walked straight up to Kagome and held
a lock of her hair within his hand. Bringing the lock of hair up to his nose,
Inuyasha sniffed. His eyes widened and his mouth gapped opened slightly as he
inhaled a second time to make sure what he smelled was actually there. He
dropped the lock of hair and his eyes snapped back up to Sesshomaru. His jaw
clenched and he glared at his bother.
“What
happened to her?” Inuyasha demanded to know. He was fuming within. The
inner voice which he usually ignored had become louder with his recent
transformation and it was now growling its dislike at what had become of
Kagome. It did not like her change in scent, which made Inuyasha think of
sneezing slightly. His fists clenched and unclenched slightly at his sides, as
he battled to ignore his inner voice which was whispering its’ dislike
within his head.
Sesshomaru
looked at Inuyasha, who still stood before him. He was slightly surprised that
the hanyou did not immediately demand that he hand over the miko. Watching as
Inuyasha clenched his hands slightly at his sides, while glaring daggers at
him, Sesshomaru shifted the unconscious miko in his arms, bringing her closer
to his chest. His action brought forth a slight growl from the half breed, who
was stating his displeasure at the close proximity between him and the miko.
Sesshomaru
still eyeing Inuyasha continued in his sturdy pace towards the village and Keades’
hut. As he was passing by the half demon he stated in a cold firm voice.
“Follow.”
Inuyashas’
lips become nothing more than two fine lines pushing at each other as he glared
at his brothers back. He snapped his gaze to the others that had shown up and
snapped at them in return. “What?! You heard what he said, follow!”
Then he turned on his heel and growled low as he followed the path that lead to
the village.
Sesshomaru
reached Keades’ hut and placed Kagome on a matt within, before exiting,
leaving her with the elderly miko. He walked back outside meeting up with
Inuyasha and his pack, as they gathered round to find out what had caused such
a dramatic change in their traveling companion.
Sesshomaru
looked at each in turn before he started on his brief explanation. “It
seems that a lot has been kept from the miko. Upon entering her home this
Sesshomaru detected the scents of demons and her sibling who thought I was a
demon intruding on his home, let forth a challenge with his own holy powers. Before
the miko could get a proper explanation from her family she was sent back here
and told never to return. As we left demons were beginning their attack on her
home; but she obeyed her mother and left. What she is now, she became upon her
return to this era.” Looking towards the forest he spotted Rin and Yukao.
Without further word to anyone he left the group and headed to his own little
camp. His long hair flowed slightly back and forth, with his sure strides.
Inuyasha
was frozen; Kagome had taken Sesshomaru to meet her family, without him? He was
the only one who had ever gone through the well. Kagome had not even taken
Sango or the kit with her once, but she had taken his fierce half brother to
her world by herself? He couldn’t help but ponder if the woman truly was
witless. ‘Wait, Sota, a holy man? Demons, attacking the shrine?’
Without further thought, Inuyasha rushed to the well. The Higurashis’
were the closest thing to a family he had ever had. He would not let them down
by not being there when they really needed him. In seconds he was at the well
and on his way to Kagomes’ home.
Sango
looked around at the rest of the rag tag group who still remained out in front
of Keades’ hut. “I am a little lost here, what happened to
Kagome?” She looked to Kouga and Ayame. “Did you see her when he
brought her back?”
Kouga
looked at the hut behind him and then lowered his gaze before staring off at a
near by fire. “When Ayame and I got to her… she, her aura and scent
are different as well as her hair.” He said as he gazed off into space.
Sango
looked at the hut and then back at Kouga once again. “Different as in
how, what do you mean?” Her tone took on a slightly sinister edge,
warning the demon before her that she would have no more skirting around the
bush. She wanted her questions answered and she wanted them answered now. The
tiajiya, could feel a small knot of foreboding growing with each second that
ticked by.
Kouga
looked at the demon slayer before him and answered her with a level tone.
“Kagome is a grey miko now. She is no longer as pure as she once was, but
she is not a black miko… yet. As it stands she is straddling a precipice
between the two. Where she goes from here is entirely up to her… although
I am uncertain if she is even aware of the change that has taken place within
her yet.” That said, Kouga clasped onto Ayames’ fingers and headed
out of the village, towards their own joined pack.
Sangos’
breath was stuck in her throat; she gulped and tried to get her lungs to
function once again. She looked at Miroku who stood beside her and saw his eyes
clouded over in deep contemplation. Sango looked up at the stars. “By
gods, the pain she must have experienced.” She said softly once she got
her breath back and was once more in control of herself. “After all these
years, after all the pain of battles that she has gone through, arriving here,
meeting Inuyasha, Kikyous’ resurrection, caring for Shippou, meeting up
with us, fighting Naraku and all the other demons who sought the shikon shards
she carries daily, Kikyous’ defeat, the sprites attack and finally, the
betrayal of the trust she held for her family…” Sango shook her
head softly as she headed for the hut. “It really isn’t all that
surprising…” She said as she entered the hut, leaving the others to
do as they pleased.
Sango
approached the matt that Kagome now lay on. She took in her black hair with the
dark fiery red tips and noted that everything else seemed the same.
‘It’s actually quite fetching.’ Sango thought to herself as
she continued to sit beside her friend. She shifted slightly when the fox cub
entered the hut and allowed him to perch in her lap. “It’s ok
Shippou. What has happened was meant to be. We cannot escape our
destiny.” She spoke to the kit in low tones as she stroked his tail
slightly earning her a muffled whine as Shippou tucked further into her seeking
comfort.
Sesshomaru
sat on a branch over looking Rin and Yukao as they slept. It had been a good
hour now, since he had returned with the miko through the well. He knew his
half brother had gone back through the well to aid the mikos’ family in
their battle. Everyone else had settled down for the night and he was left in
peace to contemplate everything that had happened.
‘Truly,
Inuyashas’ rag tag pack is far more interesting than I had ever thought
it to be.’ His mind swarmed over the members in turn and he found himself
slightly curious with each one. Each seemed to have a story, a tragic one but
one none the less. Each was tied to Naraku and each other, by their combined
hate and need to wipe his existence off the face of the earth.
It
had not escaped him, that despite his and Inuyashas’ dislike and outright
animosity towards each other that Inuyasha was still pack and because of this,
Inuyashas’ own pack was a sub pack of his own. Therefore he was
inadvertently Alpha male. Not that he would assume the rule of alpha while
Inuyasha was still alive, but it did mean that he had certain… privileges
that others did not. He was left to wonder how Inuyasha would react if he were
to claim certain rights…
Sesshomaru
was snapped out of his thoughts as the scent of honey and pine mixed lightly
with raw sexuality hit his nose, and sent his mind reeling momentarily. He sat
up straight in on his perch ‘Where the hell did that come from?’ He
sniffed the air until his gaze landed upon the one thing he had hoped it
wouldn’t be… Rin.
Sesshomaru
looked upon Rin and new that her first heat at started. Then his gaze shifted
to take in Yukao, who was slowly shifting from his slumber. ‘Shit’
was the last thought Sesshomaru had, before he started a furious battle with
his inner youkai, pouring all of his restraint and self discipline into keeping
control of his beast. He could feel his grip on himself loosening as his Beast
took control. Leaping down from his branch he stood over Rin, his instincts
were screaming at him to protect what was his… his pup, in her moment of
vulnerability.
Rin
was a subservient female within his pack, and as such it was up to him to
protect her from any unwanted attention that was now being drawn towards her.
He would have to keep her safe from any demons or humans who wished to force
themselves upon her. It was his responsibility to decide who was worthy of her
and to keep all other males away until then.
Inuyasha
felt the magic wash over him as he floated through the wormhole that would
bring him five hundred years into the future. To the time where the
Higurashis’ now cared for the Shinto Shrine which was the home to both
the Goshinboku Tree and the Bone Eaters Well. Both of which were believed to be
around since the earliest times of both humans and demons.
Feeling
the effects of the magic fade, Inuyasha touched down gently onto the ground of
the empty well and immediately tensed. The demonic Aura that surrounded the
shrine was immense… ‘How is it that I have never sensed demons in
this time before?’ Inuyasha bunched up his muscles and leaped out of the
well, racing out of the well shrine to the courtyard that lay between the
Higurashi home and the well shrine.
He
came to a stop right next to a very flabbergasted Sota and was more than a
little surprised at the power the teen was giving off. Inuyasha took a quick
look around to see what was happening. It seemed as though Sota was the only
one here to fend off all the demons that were attacking. He noted that Sota had
two shields up over the Shrine grounds. One stretched over the entire compound
and the other held only the home of the Higurashis’. Sniffing a bit
Inuyasha detected the scents of both of the other two Higurashis within.
“Inuyasha,
what are you doing here?” Sota asked as he notched an arrow to his bow
and aimed at an approaching demon. ‘I should have expected him to come
back through the well. What with his thick craneium and all….’
Sotas’ thoughts were interrupted as another demon broke through his
shield, forcing him to concentrate more on his archery than on the stubborn
hanyou.
“Kami,
what is it with you Higurashis’? You never seem to know when to ask for
help or when to shut up and let me protect you!” Inuyasha yelled out as
he ran towards the attacking demons.
Using
only his claws, fists and feet as weapons Inuyasha attacked the demon horde,
leaving Sota to stare at him in shocked surprise. This was the first time in
his life that Sota had ever seen Inuyasha in battle. He watched in stunned
silence as Inuyasha moved with a fluid grace before him. His hands and feet
becoming a blur before him as his actions and pace continued to pick up. He was
struck speechless at the speed in which Inuyasha could move. Standing in the
middle of the courtyard, Sota watched as Inuyasha drove back the encroaching
demons. His astonishment was so great while watching the long time hanyou
friend battle; that he had inadvertently let down his own guard, leaving
himself open for the oni that had snuck up behind him.
“Demon
be Gone!” Sota heard his grandpa calling out and turned just in time to
see him plaster a Sutra onto the onis’ forehead. Sotas’ mouth
dropped open once again, as he watched the oni become engulfed in a bight white
light and then crumble into nothing more than dust at his feet.
Sota
looked up at his grandpa and then back to Inuyasha who was now taking on the
stronger, more intelligent demons that had come at the call of the Shikon jewel
shards, and had not yet given up on the hope that it would still be here,
hidden away some how within the Shrine grounds.
“I
swear I am not going to be able to take much more of this.” Then he
turned to his grandpa and looked him in the eyes. “If mom comes out of
there waving a holy arrow around, I swear I am going to faint.”
“Rest
assured that your mother is no priestess, boy. The holy blood that runs through
your veins is the same that runs through mine. Although I must say, I had
thought that they would remain dormant forever once I locked them away as a
young man.” Sota looked at his grandpa with an arched eye brow, but made
no comment. At that moment he heard Inuyasha cry out and spun around to see
what was happening.
Inuyasha
was surrounded by five full fledged demons who were all taking turns, swiping
at him from two directions at once. “What are you waiting for, boy? Go
help him, I will watch over your mother.” Sotas’ grandpa shoved him
away from the doorway towards Inuyasha.
‘Damnit
all the hell!’ Inuyasha cursed in his head, as he unsuccessfully tried to
dodge a swing, which only landed on the back of his shoulder rather then his
head. The blow sent him off balance, causing him to tilt a bit too far forward.
Pain seared through his body as he felt cold steal sink within his abdomen.
“Ungh. I am going to make you pay for that!” He shouted as he
sliced his talons into the demon before him, ignoring the blows he was taking
from the other attacking demons, he ripped his hand upwards. Feeling the demons
blood soak his hand, arm and the front of his haori, Inuyasha chuckled darkly
as he then spun around and decapitated the demon. Without halting his momentum
he turned and came face to face with his next opponent. ‘One bastard down
four to go.’
“Down!”
Came the clear voice of Sota from his left. Without thinking or allowing
himself time to hesitate Inuyasha dropped to the ground, as a white light
enveloped the circle of demons. Inuyasha clenched his teeth together as he felt
the back of his body burning slightly. When the light cleared Inuyasha leaped
once again to his feet and attacked the remaining two demons head on.
Sota
re-notched his bow and took aim at one of the two remaining demons. He released
and watched as his arrow deeply embedded itself into the back of the nearest
demon to him. A piercing white glow surrounded the screeching demon and then
faded, leaving nothing behind other than dust, which mingled with the dust of
the other purified demons before him.
He
watched as Inuyasha quickly dispatched the last demon by driving his hand
through his adversaries’ chest and pulling out his heart, squishing it to
mush and flinging it elsewhere.
Inuyasha
looked around the shrine grounds to make sure that there were no longer any
hidden threats and then walked towards Sota, while ignoring his own injuries.
He scoffed as Sota tried to tell him to take it easy. “Keh, you think
these scratches actually hurt me? Where’s your mother Sota, you may have
been able to get rid of Kagome and Sesshomaru quickly with the help of the
Shikon shards on her person, but you won’t find it so easy to be rid of
me.”
Inuyasha
walked by the old man and glanced at him out of the corner of his eye while
mumbling. “Feh, the whole bloody time, Kami.” Inuyasha shook his
head as he entered the doorway that lead into the family room of the Higurashi
household. His gaze came to rest upon Mrs. Higurashi as she stood in the
doorway that led to the kitchen.
Mrs.
Higurashi stood ram rod straight and stared at the hanyou before her. ‘No.’
was her first thought before her mind jumped into action. She had to get
Inuyasha back through the well. According to the scrolls that had been passed
down through the Higurashi family, tonight was a pivotal point in history. If
Inuyasha did not get back through the well soon, then come tomorrow morning,
history may not be the same…
Inuyasha
moved to speak to the woman before him, but was halted by her own voice before
even a whisper could escape his mouth. “Inuyasha, do you trust me?”
She asked him as she stared into his yellow gold eyes.
He
stood there for a moment doing nothing but staring into her chocolate brown
eyes as he contemplated her question. She had always been very gracious with
him, had always entrusted her daughters safety within his hands. She had placed
a great deal of her own trust and faith within him, and had never asked
anything of him in return. She accepted him as he was. Few people had ever done
so, but she did, without really knowing him herself. He momentarily lost
himself in his own thoughts as he pondered her question.
He
heard Mrs. Higurashi prompt him for an answer as she said his name softly. He
had come here, five hundred years into the future from his time, through a well
that housed great magic. He had been filled with a sense of self righteous
indignation at the news that the Higurashis’ had withheld secrets from
him and Kagome… but did HE actually have the right to come here and
demand that they tell him everything? So many things had happened in the last
couple of days and he found that he felt the edges of his sanity slowly
shredding and becoming frayed at the ends.
He
realized his true reason for rushing over here was to confront the hurt that he
had felt upon hearing of the Higurashis’ deception. Over the years this
place, the shrine had become his home, his sanctuary. It was the only place
where he could close his eyes and rest without worries. Now he had learned
through his brother of all people that it was not safe, that it was all a
deception. He had been fooled by the only people that he actually trusted,
aside from his close friends. The people that he had come to think of as his
own family…
Now
looking at Mrs. Higurashi and hearing her asking him to return some of the
trust and faith that she had held within him, he found that he could not deny
her, her request. He felt saliva accumulating at the back of his mouth and
moved to swallow it before answering her, and it was then that a thought struck
him.
“I
cannot smell any demons on this property, not even the ones I have just torn
apart with my own hands.” Having never turned his eyes from hers’
he caught the faint wince of her eyes as he stated what had become a blaring
headlight in his head. ‘What the hell is wrong with me, that I still cannot
pick up any scents?’
Mrs.
Higurashi licked her lips and cleared her throat slightly. “That is
because we thought it necessary to place a spell upon the well a long time ago;
so that if a hanyou were to ever come through it, he would not pick up on the
scents of the demons within this era.” She swallowed a bit as she let her
answer sink in.
“Why
has Kagome never sensed the demons within her own era?” Inuyasha asked
her as he moved to lean against the door jam.
Mrs.
Higurashi shifted on her feet for a moment. Clearly Inuyasha needed at least
some of his questions answered before he would be able to give in to her own
wishes. “Inuyasha, parts of this shrine are close to being five hundred
years old. There are scrolls housed within its’ depths that date back
further than that. We can trace the Higurashi lineage back several centuries,
to just before the Feudal Era. It is within some of these vary scrolls that we
have been given prophesies from our ancestors, and to date we have followed
them to the letter. They have yet to disappoint us or turn out to be wrong.
It
is for this very reason that we have gone to the extremes that we have. We knew
of you and Kagome before she even came back from her first visit to your time.
For you see, you are also a part of one of the prophesies along with Kagome.
When she was born we knew it was her that the scrolls spoke of for even then my
father in law could pick up the pull of the shikon jewel hidden away within my
baby girl, and because we knew it was her we placed a spell upon her as well. We
deadened her miko senses and made it impossible for her to sense demons before
her fifteenth birthday.” Mrs. Higurashi took in a deep breath and looked
once more at Inuyasha before she walked over to where he stood.
“I
thought we would have more time with her… and you… But it seems
that we were wrong. You see, the spell on Kagome was meant to wear off upon her
return to this time with her soul mate… and she has… so now she can
never come back. According to the scrolls, Kagome is meant to stay in your time
from now on. Coming back here would mean disaster. As you see, we do indeed
have demons in this time as well.” She grasped a hold of Inuyashas’
hand as she saw him sag. The realization that Kagome was not meant to be with
him was just now dawning on him.
Mrs.
Higurashi hugged Inuyasha to her. “You will always be a son to me
Inuyasha, and we will miss you greatly. Therefore I ask you again… Do you
trust me?”
Inuyasha
held back his tears as he allowed himself to be embraced by Mrs. Higurashi.
‘Will I always be denied my own happiness?’ He couldn’t stop
the dark thoughts that were seeping into the darker corners of his mind. He
heard Mrs. Higurashi state her question to him again, and again he found that
he could do nothing but nod. “I do Mrs. Higurashi, you and your family
have always been very good to me, and you have tried your best to answer my
questions. I understand that you can not tell me everything I would like to
know and I accept that, but tell me… Am I ever meant to be happy in this
life time?”
Mrs.
Higurashi allowed her tear to fall from her cheek as she listened to his broken
voice. She could feel his soul twisting and turning with the pain he was going
through. “Inuyasha, you must go back now. You must go now because someone
is in desperate need of you right now. Your friends are not strong enough to
help keep her safe, and your brother is not meant too.” She shoved him
through the still open door of the Higurashi shrine home. “Hurry
Inuyasha, time is wearing thin!” She watched as he glanced back and then
disappeared through the well shrine once more.
Mrs.
Higurash bit her lip to keep back her tears. “They will return some day,
I know they will, the scrolls hint at their return, although they will never
come back through the well again.’ Mrs. Higurashi looked at Sota.
“Seal the well now. No one must return, and we can not allow them their
moments of weakness.”
Sota
nodded and disapeard through the shrine well door. As the minutes ticked by
Mrs. Higurashi watched as her father in law entered the well shrine as well to
add his own seals to the well. Moments later bright white holy light spilled
forth from the cracks and door way of the shrine in a blazing array of rays
that lit up the now darkened yard. It was as though the sun had taken a moment
to shine down upon them from the other side of the world. Mrs. Higurashi had to
shield her eyes with her hands to keep from being blinded. Then just as
suddenly as the light had spilled forth it was sucked back into the shrine and
all was still…
Inuyasha
looked ahead of him to the other side of the well as the magic flowed over him.
It bathed him and soaked him in a fake sense of security. After all the years
of heart ache and battling to survive he knew that there was no security to be
had within the well of magic or on either ends of it. It would be ages before
he would be able to relax once again. ‘I can never go back; who knows
when I’ll be able to get a decent nights rest now...’
Gravity
took hold a second later and he felt his toes touch the ground faintly before
he pushed up and cleared the lip of the well. Inuyasha closed his eyes as he
reached the pinnacle of his jumped and let his senses flare. His brow wrinkled
at what assailed his senses. Auras tainted with darkness were converging on the
other end of the village. He could feel the dark blanket of lustful rage lap
against his own. He inhaled deeply and his eyes shot open. His nose was
assaulted by the scent of thunder clouds on the horizon, electricity sizzled in
the air and the scent of iron wafted off in all directions.
Inuyasha
clenched his jaw as he hit dirt and took off in the direction with which he
smelt the strongest iron, for he knew that it was the blood of many. There just
beyond his sight a battle was raging. He clasped his hand to the Tetsusaiga
once again and sent out a wave of his energy. He knew his brother would pick up
on it and respond. What was returned almost knocked him off of his feet.
Sesshomarus’ response was full of rage and warning and the need to
protect. It was then that he noticed he was not picking up on Kagomes’
own aura. ‘Could it be that she is still unconscious?’
Inuyasha
sniffed once more and his eyes widened as they slowly bled red. Kagome was
still there, although the scent of her blood was not present, while Sango and
Mirokus’ were present in abundant amounts. He could also pick up on the
wolf demon packs blood as well. Some of them in great amounts while others not
so much. Even Sesshomaru must have spilt quite a bit, for his was one of the
more prominent scents. It was none of this however that made his eyes bleed red
and caused his stripes across his cheeks to become prominent. The scent of
blood that brought forth Inuyashas’ demon was that of Rins.
In
that instant it became abundantly clear what was taking place. Rin was in heat
and the fear that she was letting off only increased his speed and need to be
by her side. Inuyasha was confused some what though. Normally when a human
female went into heat they did not attract this much attention. Something in Rins
scent was having an adverse effect on the male demons in range enough to pick
up her scent.
Inuyasha
was aware of his own mouth producing more saliva at the scent of her. Pine with
honey and raw sexuality, it was almost making him feel faint with headiness. He
felt an electric surge through his middle as he inhaled a huge waft of it. Mrs.
Higurashis’ words echoed back at him. ‘Your friends are not strong
enough to help keep her safe and your brother is not meant to. Kami.’ He
thought to himself. ‘I have to control my self. I can not allow my demon
side to take over completely. Kagome may not be meant for me, but she does not
know that yet… I can not hurt her more by taking another without her
being ready for it.’ Inuyasha felt his teeth lengthen and his claws
become stronger and longer as he approached the small clearing which housed his
brother and Rin.
Twigs,
grass and weeds bent and snapped beneath his feet as they touched down to push
off with every step. Leaves and branches slapped against his clothing and gave
way as he rushed passed them completely unfazed by their presence. The wound to
his stomach continued to bleed as he leaped forward and the burnt skin along
his back from Sotas’ holy arrow still tingled slightly. All of this
though was nothing to the hanyou. All that he was aware of was Rins scent of
fear and heat.
Sesshomaru
snarled at the demons before him. He could feel his blood dripping off various
parts of his body and clothing as he stood rigidly over Rin, who was seated at
his feet. He had plenty of minor scratches and slash wounds all over his body
and a few serious wounds that were doing more than dripping but he refused to
give up his place over his pup. These demons before him were cowards, and
unworthy to take his Rin. They had swarmed him as a mob in an attempt to take
him down to get to the girl at his feet. He seethed with rage that such
weaklings would even attempt to lay claim over what was his without his
permission. He was Sesshomaru, Lord of the Western Lands
and first born son of the great Inutaisho. He flicked his hands to rid them of
the blood that soaked them in a slimy slippery texture and focused on the horde
of lust hungry demons before him.
He
heard Rin whimpering at his feet and spared her a glance. Every time he laid
his eyes upon her his rage seemed to increase. How dare these low level demons
incite such fear within her? He could literally taste it as it flowed off of
her in waves. He glance around him and spotted the tajiya and monk slowly
making their way towards him. He took note of their own various injuries and
inwardly some part of him noted the strength they must possess as humans to
still be standing. He knew most humans would have been dead by now.
The
wolf before him lunged at him with a dagger as another behind him slashed at
him with his claws. Sesshomaru side stepped and watched as they tore into each
other. Too late; they realized that their target had moved. Sesshomaru parried
a sword that was lunged at his throat and countered with his energy whip,
decapitating the demon before him and slicing through the limbs of various
other demons who made the mistake of getting too close.
“Unngh!”
He gasped, his eyes gone wide as he felt a blade slice through his armor and
slip through his skin to his lungs. He reached behind him and ripped the blade
from his being while turning in a quick circle swinging the blade outwards to
disembowel the demon that had just sliced through him and his armor.
He
inhaled deeply chocking a bit and coughed up blood. He heard Rin screaming
behind him but before he could turn he felt another blade slash through his
armor to pierce his side. He felt his body weakening slowly. The pain at his
side was searing as he stepped forward off of the blade and struck out with his
energy whip, slicing off the demons arms.
It
was then that he felt Inuyashas’ pulse of power. He spun on his heel and
faced the direction of the bone eaters well. It had been a good hour and a half
since he had disappeared through it. Almost a good two hours since he, himself,
had made his way from the well to the village with the miko in his arms.
Sesshomaru
grasped hold of Tenseiga and poured his energy into it. Then feeling slightly
energized at the prospect of help arriving Sesshomaru turned to face off with
the rest of the lower level demons that had dared challenge him. He could feel
his demon blood surging through his veins, fighting to heal him as quickly as
possible.
It
was then that the monk and tiajiya reached his side. They had been battling
their way towards him from the village edge ever since they had sensed his
rising Youki. Sesshomaru spared them a glance, taking in their various injuries
and the path of dead bodies that they had left in their wake. He looked at the
monk who was grasping his arm to his middle fending off a demon with his staff.
He watched as everything slowed down before his eyes. It was as though time had
decided to stand still for him.
The
tiajiya let loose her bone boomerang and took out a group of fresh demons who
were just clearing the tree line. He watched the monk even as he, himself
slashed at various demons with his energy whip. His’ eyes grew wide
slightly as the monk before him removed the purple beeds, while yelling out
“Wind Tunnel!” Sesshomaru braced his feet to the ground as he
fought to keep his footing in the hurricane like winds that were now buffeting
everything in front of the monk, who was now sucking in the demons who had
managed to escape the wrath of the tiajiya. Sesshomaru watched as the monk
replaced the beeds around his hand and doubled over. He sniffed slightly and
looked at the monks hand, now noticing the dark purple skin that was swelling
up. ‘Poison’ Sesshomaru thought as his hand subconsciously went to
tenseiga.
Then
just as everything had slowed down to a crawl before his vision, everything
snapped into full swing once again, and he found himself once again attacking
demon after demon decapitating, slicing, and occasionally tearing the youkai
before him to pieces.
He
barely registered that he had swung the tenseiga at both the monk and tiajiya
while in the middle of his blood lust. Then when he felt his beast breaking
through to the surface, his vision already red became sharper and darker as his
body shifted shapes and he took on his demon form of a great white dog. He felt
his injuries begin to heal at an accelerated pace as his demon blood was fully
released within his system.
He
could smell the fear coming off of the attacking youkai in waves as he stood
himself once more above Rin and let loose an ear splitting growl while he
gnashed his teeth and prepared to lunge forward. His beast was screaming for
blood, his instincts forcing him forward… he would eat tonight, and drink
the blood of his enemies that fell before him…
Hearing
the tiajiya and monk gasp and say ‘Inuyasha’, he turned his massive
head to look in the direction that a very powerful aura was coming from. His
beast contemplating what it should do should Inuyasha come near his pup. The
garbled speech of his beast filled his sub conscious as he looked upon his
younger half breed brother. “Male strong. Good for pup!” ‘But
he is a half breed!’ Sesshomaru answered back. “Strong half breed.
Strong blood. Strong blade, protect pup.” Sesshomaru contemplated what
his beast said. ‘He has verbally claimed another. He is not free for our
pup.’ “verbal claim break, claim pup his.” Sesshomaru sighed,
it seemed his beast was determined to see that Rin was given to Inuyasha of all
people. ‘I, Sesshomaru shall allow him near, but he will not claim her
until his verbal claim is rescinded.’ Sesshomaru felt his beast bend to
his will as Inuyasha entered the clearing and stood staring at Rin for a second
before unleashing attack after attack on the offending demons.
Sesshomaru
leaped onto the demons nearest him and began to devour and mutilate them as the
monk and tiajiya took up defense around Rin. He glanced at his half brother to
see that he was steadily making his way through the horde of demons towards
Rin. ‘He has learned to control his inner beast it seems.’
Sesshomaru thought to himself as he took note of the darkened lines and
lengthened fangs and claws which ripped opponents apart when they came too
close. “Strong mate for pup!” His beast said once again before
Inuyasha reached them.
