Chapter 5: Sitting Duck Sesshoumaru growled as a low hanging branch scraped against his cheek. He had grown restless in the hour since he left the berry bushes. He felt frustrated as he tried to figure out his bearings. For all he knew, he could be walking in circles. “What am I missing?” he asked himself. He thought back to when Masami brought him into the woods. “What had he smelled and felt?” His eyes jerked open and he moved forward with more purpose in his step. Masami smirked as she watched the young demon dart forward. His feet moved mechanically, leaping over fallen branches, and swerving to avoid trees in his path. “He’s finally starting to see,” she said to herself, “but how much will his little body remember?” Sesshoumaru ducked to avoid a branch, missing it by mere inches. He slowed to a walk. He could feel pebbles and stones underneath his feet. His heart thudded in his chest as he let his feet glide along the stones. His breathing hitched as he realized he was in an entirely different part of the forest. Was he closer to Masami’s home or further? He knelt to the ground his mind playing back every step he took in the forest. He let out a scream of frustration and slammed his fist into the ground. His breaths came out in gasps as he tried to calm his heart. Sesshoumaru shook his head angrily as he stood to his feet. “I won’t be defeated,” he ground out. His body shook and his hands slid into fists. A distinct gurgling sound erupted in Sesshoumaru’s ears. The sound of gurgling rose as he walked forward. Brambles snagged on the sleeve of his kimono. He jerked his arm free not caring as a long strip of fabric tore away. In his haste, he failed to notice a small stone which succeeded in snaring his foot causing him to stumble forward. His fingers scrabbled feebly as he fell. One hand came to rest on solid ground, while the other sank into icy stillness. Sesshoumaru rose to his knees with his hand still gliding through the calm waters in front of him. The stream wasn’t very deep; at the most it was up to his thighs. He brought the cool liquid to his mouth savoring the feel as it ran down his throat. He let a small smile grace his features. He had to be close. Masami would surely live near the stream. If he followed it, he would find her hut or so he hoped. “Clever little demon,” Masami thought as she watched him get to his feet. “But I wouldn’t be relieved so soon.” While wise to stay near the stream as it would lead him to her home, it would also make him a sitting duck. The trees were thinner near the stream, and Sesshoumaru could be clearly seen as he stumbled along the stones. Sesshoumaru stilled. He took a slow breath in to try to bring his breathing into some form of rhythm instead of the hasty, ragged breaths he was now taking. He was so focused on his breathing that his sudden loss of air as he was struck to the ground shocked him “Well, well,” a sickly quiver of a voice said, “What a pretty fish I’ve caught.” He chuckled and planted his fist more firmly as Sesshoumaru tried to squirm out of his grasp. “Release me,” Sesshoumaru growled angrily. The man above him only laughed harder. “Why would I let my fish go? Where’s the sport in that?” Sesshoumaru dug his claws in the soft underside of the man’s wrist. He released him with a cry of pain. Sesshoumaru jerked to his feet and darted forward. “Your going to wish you hadn’t done that, my pretty fish.” He said as he moved toward Sesshoumaru who was slogging his way through the stream. Loose stones skittered underneath Sesshoumaru’s feet as he reached the other side of the stream. He had not move three feet before he could feel long, emaciated fingers grip his arm and pull him backwards. “That hurt,” he said wrapping an arm around Sesshoumaru’s shoulders and pulling him against his chest. “I think you should make it up to me, don’t you?” His arm shot out to grab Sesshoumaru’s wrist before it could do damage to his arm. “I don’t think so,” he said catching Sesshoumaru’s other wrist. He slammed his heel into the back of Sesshoumaru’s knees. Sesshoumaru feel painfully onto the stones in from of him. The man roughly jerked him onto his back still clutching Sesshoumaru’s wrists in his hand. Sesshoumaru began to panic as the man rested his knees on Sesshoumaru’s legs. “Don’t worry, little fish.” The man said icily, “It will only hurt for a little while.” He tore open Sesshoumaru’s kimono and slid his fingers slowly down the alabaster skin he found there. Sesshoumaru tried desperately to jerk out of his grasp as those fingers moved to his haori. Sesshoumaru squirmed his wrists and the man loosened his grip slightly. Sesshoumaru jerked one wrist free. The young demon struck the body on top of him. He could feel warm blood spray across his face. The man above him howled angrily. Sesshoumaru gasped as pain skittered along the side of his face where the older demon had hit him. He could feel blood pooling in his mouth where his fangs had cut into the side of his cheek. The man recaptured Sesshoumaru’s wrist as the young demon tried to get his dazed mind clear again. In one split motion, the older demon had cut through Sesshoumaru’s obi. Sesshoumaru, in desperation, did the only thing he could think of. “Masami,” he screamed as loudly as he could. He heard a chuckle. “No ones going to save you, fish. You’re all al…” The demon’s voice sputtered. Sesshoumaru could hear a crack. The demon was jerked off Sesshoumaru’s body, and he heard a splash as it landed in the stream. “Who said he was alone,” Masami said coldly. Sesshoumaru pulled himself to his feet. “Is he dead?” “Yes,” Masami said simply. Sesshoumaru sank to his knees. “I’ve failed,” he said clenching his hands into fists. “This wasn’t about winning or losing, Sesshoumaru. What have you learned?” “I’m weak,” Seshoumaru ground out angrily. “What else?” Sesshoumaru didn’t answer. “Are you blind, Sesshoumaru?” “You know I am,” he yelled his eyes blazing. He heard a soft splash as Masami threw a stone into the stream. “Are you blind?” Sesshoumaru shuddered with rage. He lunged at Masami. “Your eyes are only a weakness because you perceive them as such. I can make them your strength.” Sesshoumaru froze. “You are still willing to train me.” “Of course, you passed, didn’t you? Be prepared, Sesshoumaru, your trials are only just beginning.” I know my chapter was a little short, well maybe a lot short. I got kind of frustrated with this chapter. I wasn't sure what I wanted to happen.
